Introduction Learn skills that will help to support and inspire your Year 1 to Year 8 students about mathematics and statistics with an Open Polytechnic primary mathematics teaching qualification. You’ll gain knowledge and understanding of mathematics as well as experience practical maths and statistics investigations; a solid foundation to build your confidence and get better results for your students and school. You can get started with the Graduate Certificate in Primary Mathematics Teaching (Curriculum) which is open for enrolment three times per year. OP7902 GRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN PRIMARY MATHEMATICS TEACHING (CURRICULUM) Qualification code: OP7902 Level: 7 Credits: 60 The Graduate Certificate in Primary Mathematics Teaching (Curriculum) takes the perspective that mathematics can be fun. It encourages you and your students to learn mathematics by doing mathematics and it discusses the effectiveness with which mathematics concepts and principles are embedded into learning experiences. You will become more confident as a teacher of mathematics and in your own ability to design and deliver learning experiences that support and inspire your students. Your knowledge will help your students to investigate and understand mathematics knowledge and concepts. SKILLS YOU WILL LEARN On completion of this qualification you will be able to: 路 demonstrate knowledge of mathematics and statistics that underpin aspects of the New Zealand mathematics curriculum which are relevant to Year 1 to Year 10 students 路 discuss aspects of the deterministic and stochastic nature of mathematics, their relevance to society and mathematics teaching 路 assess the effectiveness with which particular learning experiences address fundamental mathematics concepts and understandings about the deterministic and stochastic nature of mathematics 路 design and deliver learning experiences that support and inspire students to understand mathematics concepts. GRADUATE CERTIFICATE IN PRIMARY MATHEMATICS TEACHING (LEADERSHIP) Qualification code: OP7903 Level: 7 Credits: 60 The Graduate Certificate in Primary Mathematics Teaching (Leadership) enables you to explore the evidence for different teaching approaches used in mathematics and statistics and to undertake practice-led research. It will help you develop your ability to respond to contextual challenges and champion mathematics within and beyond the school. You will have the opportunity to engage and contribute to research on effective mathematics teaching, and explore potential responses to issues that influence mathematics education in your community. As a graduate of this qualification, you will be recognised as a mathematics specialist teacher and advocate in your school. You can also use it as a stepping stone to enrol in further study.

General Information DELIVERY All three qualifications are delivered online. ASSESSMENT All three qualifications are internally assessed. You will be required to complete online real-time quizzes, submit journals, portfolios, case studies and assessments. Workplace learning All three qualifications have a workplace component. Specific activities in the workplace may include: · compiling and commenting on local curriculum documents, or offering alternatives · critiquing teaching and learning resources · observing and commenting on classroom activities and their outcomes · designing, implementing and evaluating learning experiences · conducting practice-led research · promoting and explaining mathematics and statistics and mathematics teaching to colleagues and the community. ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS These qualifications are open to New Zealand citizens and permanent residents living in New Zealand. To enrol in these qualifications you must: · hold a bachelor degree or a diploma, or experience considered equivalent to a bachelor degree · be registered and working as a practising teacher in a New Zealand intermediate or primary school · have access to a computer with broadband internet access. We require approval from your principal (or board of trustees chairperson if you are the principal) to show that you have the support of school staff or community to integrate your studies with workplace practices, and have ongoing access to a class of students to support relevant workplace learning and assessment activities. We will give you more information when you apply to enrol online. 9
English language English is the language of study at Open Polytechnic. You will need to be able to read and write well in English so that you can understand course materials and also submit written assessments. There are criteria that must be met if English is not your first language. STUDY TIME All courses have a credit value which helps you work out how much study time you will need. Allow about 10 hours of study per credit. To determine how many hours of study this means each week, divide the total hours by the enrolment period. For example, if you enrol in a 20-credit course over a trimester (17 weeks), you will need to complete about 11-12 (200 ÷ 17) hours of study per week. LOANS, ALLOWANCES AND OTHER FUNDING Student loans and allowances are administered by StudyLink. We recommend that you apply for a student loan at least four weeks before the trimester starts. We cannot confirm your enrolment or send your course materials until your fees have been paid. With My Open Polytechnic you can: · update your details · view your study information · track the status of your materials · assess your assessment submission deadlines, marks and final grades for each course · check your account balance · access Online Campus · access your My Open Polytechnic email account · access online versions of Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote. Once you’re enrolled, you can also keep track of your study information on the go with the My Open Polytechnic smartphone app called My OP. To download the app, search for ‘My OP’ on the App Store (Apple iPhone) or Google Play Store (Android smartphone). These come pre-installed on your smartphone. Library We provide a library service for students. There is no additional fee for using it.
