There is no shortage of places in Madeira and Porto Santo from where to enjoy the colours of spring.

adeira lace was part of this year’s edition of the Lisboa Fashion Week, the top event of its kind in Portugal already in its 50th edition. This was an initiative by Portuguese designer Filipe Faísca who presented his ‘6 sentido’ collection.

His goal was to incorporate Madeira lace ‘into the modern woman’s wardrobe’.

Through this collection, the stylist took it upon himself to show different ways of ‘gazing at and employing Madeira lace’ as he applied it in the making of dresses, tunics, jackets, pants and skirts.

In crafting the ‘6 sentido’ collection, Filipe Faísca used lace patterns he dug up from the archives of the museum section of the Institute for Wine and Embroidery in Madeira.

Among what he found were tablecloths, bedspreads and other embroidered pieces which he conferred with a new life by bringing them into the world of fashion. As part of his prep work for the collection, the designer also visited the embroideresses who keep this craft alive.

The collection is a fluid one and comprises pieces that range from satin and organdin to viscose, linen and wool, in shades of white, ivory, black and red.

For his next collection, this fashion designer intends to use new laces created in cooperation with the embroideresses of Madeira.

In his art, Filipe Faísca often resorts to traditional Portuguese crafts, which he always elevates to the singularity that is required by the luxury segment.

The Lisboa Fashion Week is set to return for its 51st edition in October. 쐽

bordado da Madeira marcou presença na edição deste ano da ModaLisboa, o principal evento do género em Portugal, que vai já na 50.ª edição. A iniciativa coube ao criador português Filipe Faísca, que apresentou a coleção “6 sentido”.

O objetivo foi integrar o bordado da Madeira «no guarda-roupa da mulher moderna». Com www.essential-madeira.com 6

esta coleção o criador propôs-se mostrar diferentes formas de «olhar e usar o bordado da Madeira», aplicando-o em vestidos, camisas, túnicas, casacos, calças e saias.

Para a produção de “6 sentido” Filipe Faísca usou bordados que encontrou nos arquivos do Núcleo Museológico do Instituto do Vinho e do Bordado da Madeira, parceiro da iniciativa.

Foram toalhas de mesa, colchas ou aplicações bordadas que encontrou, às quais deu uma nova aplicação, desta feita na moda.

No trabalho de recolha para preparar a coleção, o criador visitou também bordadeiras que mantêm viva esta atividade artesanal.

A coleção de peças fluídas, em tecidos como seda, organdin, viscose, linho e lã, em tons como branco, marfim, preto e vermelho.

Na próxima coleção o designer de moda pretende usar bordados novos, criados em conjunto com as bordadeiras da Madeira.

Para as suas criações Filipe Faísca recorre habitualmente ao artesanato português, elevando-o à singularidade que carateriza o segmento de luxo.

A ModaLisboa regressa em outubro para a 51.ª edição. 쐽

Madeira’s centenary

C

elebrations for the 600 years that have passed since Portuguese sailors first stepped foot on the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo are off to a start.

But little less than 100 years ago Funchal was celebrating the 500 years of the discovery of these islands.

Those celebrations took place between December 1922 and January 1923. The difference in dates had to do with World War I, which ended in 1918, and with a great debate that ensued among historians about the year in which sailors would have arrived on the island. The debate went on and in 1922 Major João dos Reis Gomes, a revered character in the society of Madeira and director of a local newspaper took on the challenge of elaborating a celebrations programme himself.

Included in this programme were official ceremonies, parades, exhibitions on the products and traditions of the island and festive decorations all around the island including lights between December 29th, 1922 and January 4th, 1923.

Two of the most important moments in those celebrations ended up becoming a legacy for the future and are now traditions: lights in the streets of Funchal which would become more regular from the 1930’s onwards in December and January as well as fireworks over the bay of Funchal to celebrate the coming of 1923 which helped to establish precedent for what is now Madeira’s great fireworks show on New Year’s Eve. 쐽

s ilhas da Madeira e do Porto Santo iniciaram as comemorações dos 600 anos da chegada dos navegadores portugueses. Mas há pouco menos de 100 anos, o Funchal era palco das comemorações dos 500 anos da descoberta destas ilhas.

Essas comemorações tiveram lugar entre dezembro de 1922 e janeiro de 1923. Esta diferença nas datas é explicada com a I Guerra Mundial, que terminou em 1918 e com o facto de haver um grande debate entre os historiadores sobre o ano da chegada dos navegadores. A divergência de datas prolongouse e em 1922 o Major João dos Reis Gomes, figura respeitada na sociedade madeirense e diretor do Diário da Madeira, lançou mãos ao desafio de preparar um programa de comemorações.

O programa incluiu atos oficiais, desfiles, exposições de produtos e tradições da ilha, decorações da cidade, incluindo iluminações, entre os dias 29 de dezembro de 1922 e 4 de janeiro de 1923.

Dois dos mais importantes momentos dessas comemorações acabariam por ser uma herança para o futuro, tornando-se em tradição: as iluminações das ruas do Funchal, que viriam a ser feitas, a partir sobretudo da década de 1930, com caráter regular, em dezembro e janeiro, e também o de fogo-deartifício na baía do Funchal, que assinalou a entrada em 1923 e ajudou a influenciar o que é hoje o grande espetáculo pirotécnico de passagem de ano na Madeira. 쐽

A garden by the sea W

hen William Reid dreamt up what would become the Belmond Reid’s Palace, inaugurated in 1891, he pictured a hotel with gardens. It was demanded by the service offered to guests who sought in Madeira a warm climate and the chance to sunbathe, far away from the cold winds of the continent, sometimes even to cure pulmonary diseases.

The gardens blossomed along the hotel located atop a promontory 70 meters above sea level. They look over Funchal following the trajectory of the sun and have hence become one of the hotel’s foremost leisure areas since its heyday.

For decades tourists would reach Madeira by ship and the sea used to be guests’ entrance. They were brought ashore by launches and then walked up the slope to the hotel. Together with the building’s main façade, the gardens were the first place guests walked through, and for many, their first contact with Madeira.

Nowadays the gardens occupy 17,400 square meters in a property that totals approximately 30 thousand square meters.

uando William Reid sonhou com aquele que viria a ser o Belmond Reid’s Palace, inaugurado em 1891, imaginou um hotel com jardins. Era uma exigência do serviço apresentado aos hóspedes que procuravam no bom clima da Madeira, tomar banhos de sol, fugir dos invernos gélidos da Europa e nalguns casos procurar cura para doenças pulmonares.

Os jardins nasceram com o hotel, localizados sobre um promontório, 70 metros acima do nível do mar. Estão voltados para a baía do Funchal e para a trajetória do sol, daí que se tenham tornado, desde os primeiros tempos, num dos principais espaços de lazer do hotel.

One of these contributions was made by Mildred Blandy, a native of South Africa and member of one of the families who owned this hotel for the longest time. Her interest in Botany led her to collaborate with friends and acquaintances in introducing seeds and plants into Madeira, particularly in the Reid’s gardens.

Influences from all around the globe can be found in these gardens, from Africa, North and South America, Australia, Brazil, China, Korea, Spain, Portugal and Japan.

Podem ser encontradas influências de várias partes do mundo desde África, América do Norte e do Sul, Austrália, Brasil, China, Coreia, Espanha, Portugal ou Japão.

Por exemplo, as árvores oriundas da África do Sul e do Brasil são espécies tropicais e subtropicais que resistem à salinidade, aos ventos do mar e ao solo ligeiramente ácido existente na Madeira.

species resistant to salinity, the winds from the sea and the slightly acid soil of Madeira.

There are over 505 species from the succulent plants family such as the Crassulaceae, the Cactaceae, the Euphorbiaceae, the Aizoaceae and the Agavaceae. The latter is the only family with eight genera comprising 21 species. The 16 species of the Aloe genus also stand out.

Walking through the gardens which unfold at different levels, from the hotel to the pool, one notices a contrast between a more romantic landscape evoked by the roses and lilies of the Nile and something rougher defined by the xerophile area which does not require water, namely the cactus and succulent plants.

As they cover the whole cliff, the gardens allow one to walk from one end of the hotel to the other. Several corners of its architecture are adorned with flower beds and the vegetation itself.

Cristina Passos is a tour guide. She is the one who leads guests to a flight of stairs where one of the garden’s most exotic species blooms, the jade vine from the Philippines. This plant’s turquoise colour does not tolerate the cold and lures in pollinizing agents. Its shape, though, is owed to a feature of self-protection and the plant itself can grow up to 18 meters as it finds support.

A team comprising eight gardeners works together with a consulting firm to maintain the gardens in pristine condition throughout the year allowing visitors to bask in all the glory of its colour pallet.

Every sense is seduced when visiting these gardens. The variety of plants, trees, the colour pallet, the chirping of the hotel’s feathery guests and the serenity of the atmosphere itself are all indispensable features of this space. It is no wonder that great historical figures such as Sir Winston Churchill, George Bernard Shaw and the Empress Sissi of Austria have chosen to stay here. 쐽

Existem 505 espécies com domínio das famílias das plantas suculentas como as Crassuláceas, as Cactáceas, as Euforbiáceas, as Aizoáceas e as Agaváceas. A família das Agaváceas é a única com oito géneros que abarcam 21 espécies. Também as 16 espécies do género Aloe têm lugar de destaque.

Ao percorrer os jardins, que se desenvolvem em vários patamares desde o hotel até à piscina, observa-se o contraste entre uma paisagem mais romântica, tendo como exemplos as rosas ou os agapantos, com algo mais duro, definido pela zona xerofítica que não necessita de água, designadamente os cactos e as suculentas.

Tendo uma zona de circulação que abrange todo o penhasco, os jardins permitem andar de uma ponta do hotel até à outra. Com vários recantos na sua arquitetura, rodeados por canteiros e a própria vegetação.

onde floresce uma das mais exóticas plantas dos jardins, a trepadeira Jade oriunda das Filipinas. A cor azul-turquesa desta planta que não tolera o frio é um chamariz para os agentes polinizadores. Por outro lado, a sua forma devese a uma caraterística de autoproteção e pode chegar aos 18 metros à medida que encontra um suporte.

Uma equipa constituída por oito jardineiros, em conjunto com uma empresa de consultoria, mantém durante todo o ano este jardim que é uma profusão de cores ao longo do ano em perfeitas condições.

Todos os sentidos ficam apurados numa visita. A variedade de plantas, árvores, a paleta de cores, o chilrear dos pássaros que por ali passam e a serenidade de todo o ambiente são caraterísticas deste espaço que foi visitado também por figuras ilustres da história, como Winston Churchill, Bernard Shaw, ou a Imperatriz Sissi da Áustria. 쐽

ccording to legend, in 1418, Portuguese sailors João Gonçalves Zarco and Tristão Vaz Teixeira were taken off course because of a vicious storm and ended up finding an island which they named Porto Santo, literally meaning ‘holy harbour’.

Bartolomeu Perestrelo was the recipient of the first captaincy of the island and it was one of his daughters, Filipa Moniz, who married Christopher Columbus, who lived in Porto Santo between 1479 and 1481. It is said that it was there that he deepened his knowledge of navigation and cartography which allowed him to prepare the voyage he would make to America.

Nowadays, the house where he supposedly lived for a while, in the town centre, has been recuperated and hosts a small but very interesting museum. The building integrates a set of constructions, www.essential-madeira.com 16

Bartolomeu Perestrelo foi o primeiro capitão donatário da ilha e foi uma filha deste, Filipa Moniz, que se casou com Cristóvão Colombo, que viveu no Porto Santo entre 1479 e 1481. Diz-se que foi aqui que aprofundou os seus estudos sobre navegação e cartografia, que lhe permitiram preparar-se para fazer a viagem que acabaria por levar à América.

Hoje, a casa onde se supõe ter vivido durante este tempo, no centro da cidade, encontra-se recuperada e alberga um espaço museológico muito interessante. Integra um conjunto de construções, uniformizadas por obras posteriores, cujo elemento mais antigo, do século XVI, é uma parede no edifício principal, onde se abrem duas janelas de perfil gótico.

standardised by later works, the oldest element of which, dating back to the 16th century, is a wall of the main building where there are two gothic windows.

The isolation of olden days and the sturdiness of its construction contributed to the difficulties faced by the people of Porto Santo. The weather, long drought periods, led to a shortage of cereal and a consequent decrease in the fertility of the soil, allowing for very little income to be generated. Isolation also favoured sacks by pirates and corsairs who would ravage many buildings and kidnap their inhabitants.

Recall how the first real fort, the fort of São José, was only built at the end of the 18th century, the time of the Marquee of Pombal. For a long period of time, the island had almost no defences.

A prime example of edified heritage is the area called Largo do Pelourinho where

O isolamento de outrora e a sua aridez contribuíram para as dificuldades por que passaram as pessoas do Porto Santo. O clima, longos períodos de seca, levaram a uma escassez de produção de cereais e consequente baixa na fertilidade dos solos, gerando poucos rendimentos.

O isolamento favoreceu os saques de piratas e corsários, que provocavam a destruição de muitas edificações e o rapto de muitos dos seus habitantes. Relembramos que o primeiro forte, digno desse nome, Forte de São José, só foi construído já no final do século XVIII, no tempo do Marquês de Pombal. Durante muito tempo as defesas eram quase inexistentes.

Do património edificado, destacamos a zona do Largo do Pelourinho, onde ainda podemos observar exemplos de edifícios de época, como a Igreja Matriz, também chamada de Nossa Senhora da Piedade, mandada construir em 1430. one can still find examples of period buildings such as the Mother Church, the order for the construction of which was given in 1430, known to locals as the Church of Nossa Senhora da Piedade. It was destroyed in a corsairs’ attack in 1667.

There is also the aforementioned Columbus House Museum.

From more recent times, there is the old Town Hall building, already from the 18th century (1756), the Porto Santo – Public Administration building, from the 19th century, Mansion, from the 18th century where the Baiana restaurant was, which took away the ground floor of the original building, where the justice court is nowadays.

This required transformations which were made so that only the west and south facades of the original building remain.

Already in this century there have been interventions, the Civic Centre of Porto Santo, which allowed the creation of a pedestrian connection between streets Rua Silvestre Teixeira and Rua Cristóvão Colombo, comprises two buildings where the Cultural and Congress Centre and the Public Services Building of Porto Santo are located.

And we cannot close without mentioning the project for the Vila Baleira primary school (1959), by architect Chorão Ramalho, the windmills of Porto Santo, an icon of the island’s landscape for a long time, the not very well-known salon-houses, a typical house in Porto Santo which required an unusual construction technique, clay roofs, more common in the Canary islands, and an industrial sort of building, the Porto Santo waterworks, from 1992, where the island’s water was bottled. 쐽

De construção mais recente, temos o edifício antigo da Câmara Municipal, já do século XVIII (1756), o edifício da Administração Pública – Porto Santo, do século XIX, o Solar, do século XVIII, onde se encontrava o restaurante Baiana, que infelizmente descaraterizou por completo o résdo-chão do edifício original, o edifício onde agora funciona o tribunal, que por força das alterações necessárias para as novas funções foi bastante alterado, restando somente da construção original as fachadas sul e oeste.

Já neste século foi feita uma intervenção, o Centro Cívico do Porto Santo, que permitiu criar uma ligação pedonal a Rua Silvestre Teixeira e a

Rua Cristóvão Colombo, que é constituído por dois edifícios, onde se localizam o Centro de Congressos e Cultural e o Edifício de Serviços Públicos de Porto Santo.

Não poderíamos terminar, sem antes fazer referência ao projeto da escola primária de Vila Baleira (1959), da autoria do Arquiteto Chorão Ramalho, dos moinhos de vento do Porto Santo, referência durante muito tempo da paisagem da ilha, das não muito conhecidas casas-salão, casa típica de Porto Santo que utilizava uma técnica de construção pouco usual no nosso país, com coberturas em barro, mais utilizadas nas Canárias, e um edifício de tipologia industrial, a fábrica das águas do Porto Santo, de 1992, onde se fazia o engarrafamento da água da ilha. 쐽

he theatre is ‘a house that only comes to life when there are people inside’.

Sandra Nóbrega speaks these words naturally as she walks Essential through the corners of 130 years’ worth of history. The director of the Baltazar Dias Municipal Theatre has dreams: creating a company with professional actors and even staging a great opera production.

Funchal’s most historic playhouse is much more than just a stage or auditorium.

It comprises a noble hall, a foyer, as well as the amphitheatre of the Municipal Garden on the other side of Avenida Arriaga.

Guided tours are held on Tuesdays, at 10 a.m. Tours for schoolchildren and groups of elderly people are also done Monday and Tuesday mornings, if booked in advance.

It took 55 years to make this theatre a reality. Its history starts in 1833 when Portugal’s second largest theatre, the Teatro Grande, which stood a few hundred meters from its modern counterpart was demolished so that the city could have a plaza. Until a new theatre could be built, shows were held in small playhouses around town like the Bom Gosto, Prazer Regenerado, Concórdia and Esperança theatres which gradually disappeared.

In February 1882, the Town Hall of Funchal chooses architect Tomás Augusto Soler’s project inspired by the Italian playhouse model embodied in the Teatro de São Carlos, in Lisbon, or the Teatro alla Scala, in Millan. The foundation stones are laid in October 24th, 1884. Four years later, for the theatre’s inauguration on March 11th, it is a full house to see the ‘Las dos Princesas’ zarzuela from the Canary Islands, acted by José Zamorano’s company.

teatro é “uma casa que só vive se as pessoas estiverem lá dentro”. A afirmação pertence a Sandra Nóbrega e é dita com naturalidade, enquanto conduz a Essential por recantos com 130 anos de história. A diretora do Teatro Municipal Baltazar Dias tem sonhos: criar uma companhia com atores profissionais e até trazer ao palco uma grande produção de ópera.

A mais histórica sala de espetáculos do Funchal é mais do que o palco ou a plateia.

Inclui um salão nobre, ou um foyer, além do anfiteatro do Jardim Municipal, do outro lado da Avenida Arriaga. Às terças-feiras pelas 10:00 horas da manhã realizam-se visitas guiadas. Às segundas e terças também de manhã há visitas solicitadas pelas escolas ou grupos seniores.

Foram precisos 55 anos para que o teatro fosse uma realidade. O processo começa com a demolição, em 1833, do segundo maior teatro português, o Teatro Grande, a escassas centenas de metros do atual teatro, para ser aberta uma praça na cidade. Até que fosse construída uma nova sala, a oferta de espetáculos estava a cargo de salas mais pequenas, como os teatros Bom Gosto, Prazer Regenerado, Concórdia e Esperança, que acabaram por desaparecer.

Em fevereiro de 1882, a Câmara Municipal do Funchal escolhe o projeto do arquiteto Tomás Augusto Soler, inspirado no modelo italiano, como o Teatro de São Carlos em Lisboa ou o Teatro alla Scala em Milão. A primeira pedra é lançada a 24 de outubro de 1884.

Quatro anos mais tarde é com casa cheia e a zarzuela “Las dos Princesas”, das ilhas Canárias da companhia de José Zamorano, que o teatro é inaugurado a 11 de março.

Queen of Portugal, then changed to Manuel de Arriaga, after the first president of the Republic. Afterwards it was called the Funchalense, meaning ‘native of Funchal’, and then became the Baltazar Dias, in tribute to the 16th century Madeiran playwright, poet and novelist who could conceive and stage texts in spite of his blindness.

Because of this, or maybe because public facilities seek to be ever more inclusive, Sandra Nóbrega reveals that some of the boxes closer to the stage are often reserved for blind people and their escorts, so that they can feel the stage more closely.

The director of the theatre emphasises how the different spaces host all sorts of art.

Actors of diverse origins have stepped on this stage and beyond. Events related to politics and society have also taken place here, especially in the noble hall. The artistic season is varied and the audience matches this variety. Last year, there were 47 thousand spectators.

Spanning over a century of history, the Baltazar Dias also serves as a ‘bridge to our

Por causa disso, ou simplesmente porque cada vez mais os lugares públicos procuram ser inclusivos, Sandra Nóbrega revela que os camarotes mais encostados ao palco são destinados, em alguns momentos, a invisuais e um acompanhante, para que possam sentir mais de perto as vibrações do espetáculo.

origens e até acontecimentos relacionados com a política e sociedade, sobretudo no salão nobre. A temporada artística é variada e o público tem correspondido. Foram 47 mil espetadores no ano passado.

Com mais de um século de história o Baltazar Dias é também uma «ponte para a memória coletiva». Exemplo disso é a dedicação do camarim prima-donna à consagrada atriz portuguesa Eunice Muñoz pelos seus 75 anos de carreira. Foi remodelado no ano passado, e exibe elementos associados às passagens da artista pelo Funchal. Outros como Vasco Santana, Amélia Rey Colaço, Lomelino Silva ou Vítor Costa também engradeceram a sala de espetáculos com capacidade para 384 lugares, caraterizada pela típica cena à italiana: palco fixo central, plateia, camarotes e frisas. Por aqui passaram, em 1901, os reis de Portugal, D. Carlos e D. Amélia.

Acima do palco fica a teia, um entrelaçado de madeiras com cabos de sisal originais de 1888, onde são feitas as manobras, de levantamento e arrear dos panos, das pernas, das bambolinas, dos telões. Aí estão algumas das assinaturas das

collective memory’. This is embodied in the prima-donna dressing room, dedicated to Portuguese actress Eunic Muñoz, for her 75 years of career. It was remodelled last year to include elements alluding to the artist’s visits to Funchal. Other celebrated Portuguese actors who acted in this house include Vasco Santana, Amélia Rey Colaço, Lomelino Silva and Vítor Costa. The auditorium can sit 384 people and sports a typical Italian layout: a fixed central stage and boxes. D. Carlos and D. Amélia, the king and queen of Portugal, passed by in 1901.

Above the stage is the fly system comprising the original sisal ropes from 1888 through which the curtains, screens, legs and upper pieces of scenery are operated. The signatures of some companies who have acted here can be found there.

The oldest dates back to 1897.

Adjacent to the upper pieces of scenery there is a Painting Room, located above the audience seats, where the screens that are projected nowadays were painted. This space is characterised by natural light, its

circular structure and stonewalls. It was recently host to Joanna Latka’s ‘The Temptations of Monsieur Valéry’ exhibition.

Sandra Nóbrega reveals that thanks to a partnership with the University of Lisbon’s Centre for Lusophone and European Literatures and Cultures, a ‘Theatre Collection’ is to be launched. It will comprise a series of unpublished works and some second editions of Baltazar Dias’ works. It is important, she says, because ‘it opens doors for Madeiran groups to stage some of the playwright’s works’, something which is very much in line with goals such as taking Baltazar Dias’ plays on tour through the island and the mainland, integrating the European network of historic theatres or creating and staging plays.

Sandra Nóbrega revela que em parceria com o Centro de Literaturas de Expressão Portuguesa das Universidades de Lisboa, será lançada “A Coleção do Teatro”,um conjunto de obras inéditas e algumas segundas edições das obras de Baltazar Dias. A importância explica, é «abrir portas para haver grupos madeirenses a encenar obras daquele dramaturgo», algo que vai ao encontro de um dos muitos objetivos, como levar as peças de Baltazar Dias em itinerância pela ilha e ao continente, pertencer à rede europeia de teatros históricos ou criar e programar teatro.

Esta casa, feita de afetos, atingiu os 130 anos não por mérito de uma pessoa ou de outra, mas por um conjunto de vontades, sejam elas de artistas, técnicos e de agentes culturais. 쐽

Fica na Cidade 2018 About 150 artists will participate in the 4th edition of Madeira’s major urban music festival called Fica na Cidade, meaning ‘stay in the city’. It is organised by the Town Hall of Funchal and takes place between the 2nd and 9th of May. Its goal is to promote recently established artists and bands from the international and particularly the national and regional scenes. There will be four stages for a total of 40 concerts: at Largo do Chafariz, in the Old town, in Rua da Carreira and in Praça Amarela, each venue with its own identity.

The Commercial and Industrial Association of Funchal is a partner of this event and thus dynamizes several activities to stimulate local commerce, blending the gastronomic and cultural worlds.

Cerca de 150 artistas participam na 4.ª edição do maior festival de música urbana da Madeira, o Fica na Cidade, que é organizado pela Câmara Municipal do Funchal. Tem lugar entre os dias 2 e 9 de Maio, com o objetivo de promover recém-estabelecidos artistas e bandas internacionais e em particular, regionais e nacionais. Serão montados quatro palcos para um total de 40 concertos: no Largo do Chafariz, na Zona Velha, na Rua da Carreira e na Praça Amarela, cada um com uma identidade própria. Lace factory takes to the streets Bordal is among the most prestigious Madeira lace factories and has just started an itinerary exhibition that will wander the island for a year.

Madeirans and tourists alike will be given the chance to learn about the different stages of this traditional craft.

This is the way the firm run by Susana and João Vacas commemorates the European Cultural Heritage year. This exhibition follows on from the 2012 ‘Madeira Embroidery Historic Itinerary’, an initiative that provided tours of the factory and the experience of the entire manufacturing process and history of Madeira Lace.

The Cable Car station in Funchal was the first site chosen to present the factory and manufacturing of Madeira Lace. The exhibition will be there for a month and will then visit a variety of hotels with whom Bordal has partnerships.

Uma das mais conceituadas fábricas de Bordado Madeira, a Bordal iniciou uma exposição itinerante, que ao longo de um ano vai percorrer a Madeira, dando a conhecer as diferentes etapas do processo de produção, a madeirenses e a turistas.

Esta é uma forma encontrada pela empresa de Susana e João Vacas para assinalar o ano Europeu do Património Cultural e surge na sequência da criação, em 2012, do ‘Roteiro Histórico do Bordado Madeira’ que proporciona a visita à fábrica para conhecer e vivenciar todo o processo de fabrico e história do Bordado Madeira.

O espaço do Teleférico do Funchal foi o primeiro local escolhido para apresentar a fábrica e o fabrico do Bordado Madeira. Esta exposição estará patente neste local durante um mês, passando posteriormente por diversos hotéis parceiros da Bordal.

MATERIA’s latest novelty, Stow It, designed by James Irvine, is a cork-based multi-functional wall shelf. A collection commissioned by Experimentadesign for Corticeira Amorim, it combines contemporary design and functionality.

As well as accommodating objects, this piece also has a acoustic feature, reducing noise in emptier spaces.

Celebrating wine To celebrate the 260 years of the demarcated Douro region, the Institute of Wines from Douro and Porto and Zwiesel KristalGlass challenged the architect Álvaro Siza to design a piece that would do justice to the emblematic date. The result was decanter Douro. With a wavy shape, enabling the wine to run slowly down the sides, the piece also has a wide base, ensuring the neck has plenty of contact with air to reveal all its aromas.

The decanter Douro is on sale at El Corte Inglês in Lisbon.

A Vista Alegre apresentou na feira internacional Maison&Objet, que decorreu no final de janeiro, em Paris, a coleção E2H- Earth to Humanity. Tribute to architecture

A Galeria Millennium, em Lisboa, volta a homenagear um grande valor da arquitetura nacional com o lançamento do “Guia de Arquitetura Eduardo Souto de Moura Projetos Construídos Portugal” (edição bilingue português-inglês), editado pela A+A Books.

The Millennium Gallery, in Lisbon, will once more pay homage to Portuguese architecture with the launch of “Guide of Architecture Eduardo Sousa de Moura Constructed Projects Portugal,” (bilingual Portuguese-English edition), edited by A+A books. With the poetic vision of the visual artist Nuno Cera, who photographed all of the guide’s works, and the texts of architect Marta Sequeira, the reader is invited to discover all the architect’s work in Portugal from north to south.

To complement this guide, Millennium Gallery is now also staging the exhibition “Mineral Poetry, Eduardo Souto de Moura by Nuno Cera” until May 19.

Privileged furniture Created in 2007 by Nuno Miguel Borges, Project Martins is known for furniture design, signed by several Portuguese architects. Recently, three new pieces were added to this collection: the chair Pené, designed by Pedro Ramalho, the divider Byo-Bu by Luisa Penha and the wardrobe UEA (“A Kind of Wardrobe”) by Carvalho Araújo.

Pena, Project Martin’s first chair, is characterised by its extreme comfort and its resistant oak material. The Byo-Bu divider, which combines tola wood with traditional wool from northern Portugal, is available in two versions: one with a canary yellow wool panel and two in dark yellow, and another with three neon green fabric panels.

The UEA wardrobe, made in sucupira and tola wood, avoids the conventional wardrobe and comes with a side shelf which adds multi-functionality, serving as a support for hangers or lighting.

he Small House is a pub where beer reigns supreme! Located in the town of Ponta do Sol, it gathers an unmatched collection of ale sporting well beyond 170 references, in just two years. The inspiration for the vintage style of the décor was taken from the railways of San Francisco that hold the barrels in place; the British culture and the local identity of Madeira, embodied in the very walls of the establishment.

Having once been asked by a customer how was it that such an establishment did not have its own craft beer, the owner, Roberto Castro, decided to embark on a new challenge. In a matter of weeks, he contacted Faustino Microbrewery and has since developed recipes for not one but two beers.

The first one goes by the name of Duvel. It is blond strong ale with an alcohol

volume of 8.5%. Its froth is dense and its taste somewhat sweet at first, boosting a finish with hints of citrine. Camomile extracts emanate from this ale and its lupus is of low intensity.

The second beer is more of a toasted one, inspired by Guiness, an export stout, with an alcohol volume of 6.5%. It has an aroma of coffee and dark chocolate. It is recommended that it be in the glass so that its many pungent aromas, including its notes of date can gradually arise. It is a full-bodied beer with a very dense froth and is the one that is most consumed

by Madeirans.

Since their release, these beers have met with immense positive criticism as well as some less positive reviews which have nonetheless been very encouraging

and constructive. There is the will to develop two further beers, a weissbier and an IPA. The goal would be to set up a microbrewery where all products are of Madeiran origin.

The ales are kept company by whiskeys, rums and gins from the world round. Highlights, on account of their historic value, include the Macallan 25 year old and James Martin’s 25 year old, the establishment’s most valuable bottles.

The national highlight is The Balvenie 21 year old, which ages in Port Wine barrels.

As cervejas têm tido desde o seu lançamento imensas críticas positivas, sendo as menos positivas sempre construtivas e encorajadoras.

Existe o desejo de serem criadas mais duas cervejas: uma weissbier e uma IPA. Ambiciona ainda montar uma micro-cervejaria, onde os produtos seriam todos madeirenses.

onta do Sol was made a town in 1501 and its importance is reflected by the magnificent and picturesque buildings in the town centre, a former stop in the sugar route, a major trade in the history of Madeira. Not only a part of the town’s historic centre has already been restored, the Town Hall is bent on creating conditions for restoring the rest.

Mayor Célia Pessegueiro explains how ‘because it is an area where most existing properties are from the 18th and 19th centuries it is necessary to restore those properties and give them a new use’. It was for that purpose that an Urban Rehabilitation Area was created for the town centre of Ponta do Sol where any who wish ‘to settle or invest’ will be free from paying the Council Tax for Real Estate during 5 years and will also be offered 50% off in some other municipal taxes.

But the town centre is just one example of how a good moment this is for real estate investments here, where the current sale price for family residences is above the average for Madeira which corresponds to 1,063 euros per square meter. The valuation is one which Célia Pessegueiro considers ‘a sign that demand exceeds offer’ and sees as a reflection of ‘the quality of the access means and public services provided here’.

And the weather lives up to the town’s reputation. ‘There are areas that are more enticing for real estate investment, the most sought after being Lugar de Baixo, Anjos and Madalena do Mar. However, the higher areas of the municipality also have many houses bought by foreigners’, Célia Pessegueiro explains. www.essential-madeira.com 33

levada à categoria de concelho em 1501, a Ponta do Sol refletiu a sua importância nos imponentes e pitorescos edifícios da vila, um dos pontos de passagem da economia do açúcar, que marcou a história da Madeira. E se uma parte do centro histórico está recuperada, a Câmara Municipal está apostada em criar condições para a recuperação do restante.

A autarca, Célia Pessegueiro, explica que «sendo uma zona onde a grande maioria dos imóveis existentes são dos séculos XVIII e XIX, é necessário proceder a uma recuperação desses imóveis e dar-lhes uma nova utilidade».

Para isso foi criada uma Área de Reabilitação Urbana, para a vila da Ponta do Sol, onde quem queira «investir ou fixar-se nesta área» vê garantida a isenção, durante 5 anos, do Imposto Municipal sobre Imóveis e uma redução de 50% de algumas taxas municipais.

Mas a vila é apenas um exemplo do bom momento do investimento imobiliário no concelho, um dos que tem o preço de venda de alojamentos familiares acima da média da Madeira, que é de 1.063 euros por metro quadrado. Um valor que Célia Pessegueiro considera «um sinal de que a procura é maior do que a oferta», mas também um reflexo da «qualidade dos acessos e dos serviços públicos que aqui são prestados». O clima também faz jus ao nome, Ponta do Sol. «Existem zonas muito apetecíveis para o investimento imobiliário, sendo as mais procuradas as zonas litorais, como o Lugar de Baixo, os Anjos e a Madalena do Mar. No entanto, nas zonas altas do município existem muitas casas compradas por estrangeiros.», esclarece Célia Pessegueiro.

Em 2008 residiam 46 estrangeiros na Ponta do Sol. Em 2016 já eram 171, a maioria do Reino Unido (45) ou de países da UE (49) e distribuídos

In 2016 the figure was up to 171, most of them hailing from the United Kingdom (45) or EU countries (49) and distributed between the three parishes: Ponta do Sol, Madalena do Mar and Canhas. ‘They settle in houses they fall in love with. That can happen in a coastal location or anywhere in a higher area’ says the mayor. She notes how investments in the higher zones are ‘usually by people who also create agricultural investments.’

Another phenomenon that has contributed to the new dynamics of the real estate sector is the return of several lusodescendants from Venezuela who escaped the political and financial crisis of their country: ‘They come to occupy family houses that have long been empty. Some of these will have to undergo sever interventions which will require means of incentivizing those restorations.’

To improve conditions and attract real estate investment the Town Hall of Ponta do Sol intends to create more Urban Rehabilitation Areas in the near future ‘in the Levada do Poiso, Canhas, Carreira, Solar das Esmeraldas and Lombada da Ponta do Sol areas.’ Furthermore, Ponta do Sol can be made even more attractive ‘if some public infrastructures like pedestrian means of access are improved, viewpoints are embellished,

more public walks are created, etc’, says Célia Pessegueiro.

On a different level, the mayor upholds that most services can be improved, with ‘the creation of a priority route for the investor, the creation of an autarchic Simplex as well as investing in greater quality basic services offered by the Town Hall.’ 쐽 www.essential-madeira.com 34

Um outro fenómeno que tem contribuído para uma nova dinâmica no setor imobiliário é o regresso de muitos lusodescendentes da Venezuela, em fuga da crise económica e política no país: «Vêm ocupar casas de família que estavam vazias há muito. Algumas destas casas terão mesmo de sofrer intervenções mais profundas, pelo que terão de ser estudadas formas de incentivo a essas recuperações.»

Para melhorar as condições para atrair mais investimento imobiliário a Câmara da Ponta do Sol pretende criar, em breve, mais áreas de Reabilitação Urbana, «na zona da Levada do Poiso, nos Canhas, e da Carreira, zona do Solar dos Esmeraldos, na Lombada da Ponta do Sol.» Além disso, a Ponta do Sol ainda poderá ficar mais atrativa «se forem melhoradas algumas infraestruturas públicas, como acessos pedonais, embelezamento de miradouros, criação de mais passeios públicos, etc.», considera Célia Pessegueiro.

A outro nível, a autarca defende que a generalidade dos serviços pode ser melhorada com «a criação de uma via prioritária para o investidor, a criação de um Simplex autárquico e com a aposta mais na qualidade dos serviços básicos que a Câmara disponibiliza para a população». 쐽

he Madeira Film Festival (MFF) is held between May 14th and 20th at the Baltazar Dias Municipal Theatre.

This year will mark its 7th edition and the programme includes films as well as masterclasses, discussion panels, workshops, concerts, walks through nature and networking dinners.

The Festival started in 2012 at the Belmond Reid’s Palace where films were shown. The following year saw the event grow and films started to be shown at the Baltazar Dias Municipal Theatre. According to Elsa Gouveia, one of the people in charge, the goal of the MFF is to pay tribute to Madeira’s laurel forest, a UNESCO Natural World Heritage Site, by inviting the members of

the industry to act as ambassadors around the world.

The festival starts on Monday with the Sunset Welcome Cocktail event, thanks to a partnership with the Meliã Hotel. The opening of this year’s edition will be at the Baltazar Dias Municipal Theatre with another cocktail party, the menu for which comprises the innovative Codfish and Serra da Estrela Cheese pie with Madeira wine and will be served on trays decorated with Madeira lace. Guests will be driven to the Theatre in classic automobiles.

The opening film is scheduled for 9 p.m. and other films to be shown include national debuts as well as recent Oscar-nominated films like Loveless. One of the actresses of the movie will attend the festival in representation of the www.essential-madeira.com 36

Elsa Gouveia notes how after six editions several people in the world are recipients of the MFF award and they support the team of the MFF, when on a USA’s digression. They recommend places they visited and sign their emails as Laurel Forest Ambassadors. For Elsa Gouveia, this is a sign that they ‘really enjoyed the festival’. 쐽

IWC Schaffhausen has unveiled its exclusive Pallweber pocket watch to celebrate the company’s 150th anniversary. Limited to 50 pieces, it is IWC’s first pocket watch to have a digital hours and minutes display since the production of the historic model was discontinued in 1890, and the first new pocket watch from the Swiss luxury watch manufacturer in the 21st century.

T

he end of Porsche. That's how the majority of the millions of fans of the brand - and its few detractors - saw the launch of the Cayenne’s first generation. After all, how could a manufacturer, that until then had only produced sports models, be successful with an SUV weighing over two tonnes?

But the story didn't go as most people expected. It went more as Porsche had imagined. The first innovative Porsche family car sold 270,000 units, opening the doors to an epochal change for the German brand.

The first Cayenne ended up selling more alone than the 911 and the Boxster together, and created a financial freedom never experienced by Porsche until then, enabling the development of the first Cayman and the 997-generation 911. The truth is that if Porsche is today the most profitable car brand, that’s thanks to the Cayenne.

The second generation, launched in 2010, found more than half a million clients around the world and could have sold more, if Porsche hadn’t meanwhile launched the Panamera and the Macan, two roaring successes.

Thanks to the new path opened by its SUV, Porsche today has an extraordinary

catalogue of seven products and hit its sale record in 2017 with more than 246,000 units sold on a global level. The cars have never been as complete and have never experienced such an untouchable reputation as the one they are enjoying 70 years after the birth of the brand. The future is also very promising, with the arrival of the first electric Porsche, the Mission E, in 2019.

For now, the Cayenne generation is the biggest novelty. To present it to the press, Porsche decided to take journalists to the beautiful views of the Douro and take them down fantastic routes, down the motorway, up sinuous paths in the mountain and on a 40-minute off-road drive by the slopes of the Quinta do Vallado, one of the most beautiful places in the whole region.

With an aesthetic form close to the second generation but with the most refined and appealing lines ever, it is increasingly more difficult to resist what is still the reference for the luxury SUVs. The new Cayenne is proof that a vehicle of five meters in length and weighing two tonnes, can in fact be very, very beautiful.

Afinal de contas, como é que um construtor que até aí só tinha produzido modelos desportivos poderia ter sucesso com um SUV de mais de duas toneladas?

In terms of engines, the range begins with the Cayenne V6 with 340 horsepower and continues onto the interesting Cayenne S, also with a V6, but with twin-turbo and 440 horsepower, offering performance worthy of a sports car. Finally, the powerful Cayenne Turbo comes with a v8 of 4 litres with 550 horsepower, which means 0-100km in 3.9 seconds and 286km/h at maximum speed.

Almost 30 years ago, in 1989, Ferry Porsche said that if Porsche made an all-terrain vehicle following the brand’s quality standards, people would buy it. But certainly even the son of the founder couldn’t anticipate the tremendous impact the Cayenne would have on the industry in general and on Porsche in particular. Today, it is the most emblematic model following the iconic 911, outweighing even the two mid-engine sports cars, the 718 Boxster and the Cayman. The Cayenne will also be viewed as an icon. 쐽

Com uma linha estética próxima da segunda geração, mas com as linhas apuradas e mais apelativas do que nunca, é cada vez mais difícil resistir àquele que ainda é a referência dos SUVs desportivos de luxo. De traseira, principalmente, o novo Cayenne é a prova que um veículo com quase cinco metros de comprimento e duas toneladas pode ser muito, muito bonito.

O interior acompanha a evolução da estética exterior, com a introdução do Virtual Cockpit antes visto no novo Panamera, e a eliminação de quase todos os botões, que passam para o sistema de infotainment. A qualidade é impressionante, o bem-estar a bordo melhor do que nunca e o conforto consegue superar as expectativas, que eram, já de si, elevadas.

rganised by the Regional Directorate for Culture, the Atlantic Roots Festival is to be held on the 14th, 15th and 16th of June. Instead of being hosted in Quinta Magnólia, for its 19th edition, the Festival will be set in Praça do Povo. It will be integrated into the commemorations of the 600 years of Madeira and Porto Santo. A number of artists and groups are already confirmed, including the Victor Jara Brigade, Lura, Rosa Passos and Xarabanda which will be joined by other names from the so-called World Music.

The Victor Jara Brigade focuses on recreating traditional Portuguese music; Lura, a singer of Cape-Verdean origins, has been nominated with Mariza for an artistic award; Rosa Passos, one of the best known Brazilian singers of the moment, has been acknowledged by UC Berkeley and Xarabanda, a group that has been researching, collecting and promoting traditional Madeiran songs.

Held since 1994 under different names, this festival is considered the oldest of its kind in the country. Its goals are going international and invest in the promotion of the Region’s culture. Bringing the Festival down to Praça do Povo makes it more accessible since it will make entry free of charge. 쐽

romoting the heritage of chapels in Madeira and Porto Santo through guided tours is one of the goals of the ‘Chapels under the Moonlight’ project. The initiative combines cultural richness with moments of music performed by the Madeira Classical Orchestra.

This year’s itinerary runs between April 19th and May 17th and includes three chapels in Funchal: the Quinta and Chapel of Faial, Chapel of Sant’Ana and Chapel of Nossa Senhora da Conceição. It will also visit the Chapels of Nossa Senhora do Loreto and the Chapel of Jesus, Maria e José in Calheta.

Concerts start at 9 p.m. every Thursday – with the exception of the second week of May, when it will be on Friday – and by booking in advance it is possible to see and learn more under the guidance of Francisco Clode, Rita Rodrigues and Filipe Bettencourt. 쐽

Island Treasures BALTAZAR DIAS MUNICIPAL THEATRE

The play based on Luísa Paolinelli’s Tesouros da Ilha book will take the stage and pay tribute to aspects of life in Madeira which have made the island known the world round over the years. It is ever more important to acknowledge our roots and uphold traditions. The GATO Association and the Town Hall of Funchal have come together for this initiative, set to take children and adults alike on a travel through Madeiran history in approximately 60 minutes.

Uma peça baseada na obra de Luísa Paolinelli, com o mesmo nome, ‘Tesouros da Ilha’, vem a palco para homenagear aspetos da vida madeirense que, ao longo dos séculos, tornaram a Madeira conhecida pelo mundo. Torna-se cada vez mais importante valorizar as raízes e preservar as tradições. A Associação GATO e a Câmara Municipal do Funchal juntaram-se nesta iniciativa que visa miúdos e graúdos numa imersão pela história madeirense em aproximadamente 60 minutos.

The Madeira Island Ultra Trail is an initiative already into its 10th edition and consists of the challenge of crossing the island on foot from northwest to southeast. It begins in Porto Moniz, at the level of the sea and walks through some of the highest sites of the island before returning to the level of the sea, in Machico. These days will also see the Ultra, Mini and Marathon races take place and awards for all four competitions are handed out on Sunday the 29th, at Praça Fórum Machico.

O Madeira Island Ultra Trail é uma iniciativa que já vai na sua 10.ª edição e consiste no desafio de atravessar a ilha de lés-a-lés, no sentido noroestesudeste. Inicia-se no Porto Moniz, ao nível do mar, com passagens pelos pontos mais altos da ilha para depois regressar novamente ao nível do mar, em Machico. Decorrem nestes dias também as provas Ultra, Mini e Marathon e são entregues os prémios de todas as quatro provas no domingo 29, na Praça Fórum Machico.

2nd Casino da Madeira Gala CASINO DA MADEIRA

Casino da Madeira is holding its second Gala this year. Musical guest is Miguel Araújo and his quartet who will be performing at the Bahia room on April 28th.

Miguel is a Portuguese musician, singer, composer and lyricist. He was born in 1978 in Águas Santas, in Maia, and has authored some of the biggest early 21st century Portuguese musical hits such as ‘Anda Comigo Ver os Aviões’ and ‘Quem és tu Miúda’. He is a founding member of the Os Azeitonas group, with whom he remained until 2016.

O Casino da Madeira realiza a sua segunda Gala deste ano. O convidado é Miguel Araújo, que se apresenta com o seu quarteto a 28 de Abril na Sala Bahia. Ele é um músico, cantor, compositor e letrista Português.

Madeira Auto Parade FUNCHAL

The ‘Madeira Auto Parade’ takes place at 3:30 p.m. on April 29th and is the initiative that closes the celebrations associated with the 2018 Flower Festival. The Parade is organised by the ACME - The Classic Motor Exhibition Association and the Madeira Beetle Club. The goal of this initiative is to blend the glamour of classic automobiles and motorcycles with the flowers of Madeira integrating one of the largest Restoration and Elegance Contests in the country. More than 400 vehicles are set to participate.

16th Century Market MACHICO

The town of Machico is promoting the 13th edition of its 16th Century Market, an event recreating the historic period of the discovery of the archipelago and which this year is given special cultural relevance owing to its subordination to the ‘Heirs of Tristan’ theme. The Atlantic Festival comprises shows of fireworks and music that take place at 10:30 p.m. in the four consecutive Saturdays of June at the outer breakwater of Pontinha. These spectacles last for approximately 20 minutes each and marry fireworks with music making it a unique experience for residents and tourists alike. Businesses compete for a trophy given out on the basis of a vote by the public held online and through urns spread around strategic places in Funchal such as shopping centres and Turismo da Madeira.

A festival by the sea The Aleste festival is set to return on May 26th. The stage is once again the Barreirinha swimming complex. Among the many bands to have performed there are Laid Back, Surma, Bruno Pernadas, Bitchin Bajas, Bispo and Celeste/Mariposa.

The event was first held in 2014. It is an initiative of the Barreirinha Bar Café, located atop the cliff over the complex.

The goal is to offer alternative music and promote the most relevant national artists. The festival is held at three different times every year and is hosted by different noble spaces of Funchal embodying the philosophy of promoting culture in public spaces. Tickets for the Aleste Festival cost 20 euros.

T

he Portuguese parliament approved a law, which has since been promulgated by the President of the Portuguese Republic and allows for the presence of animals in establishments ‘in closed spaces’ which welcome them.

The owners of establishments are now allowed to designate a specific area for customers accompanied by pets, allow their presence in all spaces or determine a maximum number of pets allowed in the establishment so as to ‘safeguard its normal activity’.

According to the law, set to come into effect ninety days after being published in the Diary of the Republic, animals must be put on ‘short leash’ and ‘cannot move around freely’. They must not be allowed in the service area or wherever there may be food.

In spite of the aforementioned piece of legislation, the final decision on whether or not to allow for the presence of animals in establishments will ultimately fall to the owners and any who wish to take it on board must have a sign on the door so that customers can know what to expect.

Restaurants wishing to adhere now have three months to prepare themselves to welcome pets in their spaces. 쐽

parlamento de Portugal aprovou uma lei, entretanto já promulgada pelo Presidente da República, que passa a permitir a entrada de animais em estabelecimentos “em espaços fechados” que os aceitem.

Os donos dos estabelecimentos podem fixar uma área reservada para clientes com animais, permitir a sua presença em todos os espaços, ou fixar uma lotação máxima de animais no restaurante de forma a “salvaguardar o seu normal funcionamento”.

De acordo com a lei, que entrará em vigor noventa dias depois de ser publicada em Diário da República, os animais terão de estar presos “com trela curta” e "não podem circular livremente”, estando vedada a sua presença na zona de serviço, ou onde existam alimentos.

Pese embora a referida legislação, a decisão de permitir ou não a presença de animais nos estabelecimentos, continuará a cargo dos proprietários dos estabelecimentos e aqueles que aderirem a esta nova forma de estar terão de ter um dístico afixado à porta, para que todos saibam com o que podem contar.

Os restaurantes que quiserem aderir têm agora três meses para se prepararem para receber animais no seu espaço. 쐽

hen asking someone what year they were born, one sometimes hears a reply followed by the phrase ‘a good harvest’, establishing parallels with wine culture. Usually this amounts to little more than banter but, in a sense, there is some truth owing to an old custom in Madeira, the origin of which is long lost: offering wine on a special birthday.

Offering a bottle of Madeira Wine with the date of one’s birth year is more than a gesture of affection, it is an acknowledgment of quality as well as an original gift. While wine is indeed produced almost every year, not all years will have the same quality, hence the jest of labelling oneself as a ‘good harvest’.

É uma brincadeira, é certo, mas é também uma associação à qualidade do vinho e no caso da Madeira, indica um hábito cuja origem se perdeu no tempo: oferecer vinho num aniversário especial.

A oferta de uma garrafa do vinho Madeira do ano de nascimento é mais do que um sinal de afeto, traduz também qualidade, além de ser uma prenda original. E se é certo que há vinho em praticamente todos os anos, nem todos têm a mesma qualidade, daí a brincadeira acerca da “boa colheita”.

wine in each year. Part of the rite of gifting wine from the year someone was born is having to find a house that has labels from said year and then choosing from those.

Someone born in 1977, for instance, finds a variety of options available, including a rare Terrantez, currently available at more than one producer.

But a Blandy’s Bual 1958, a Cossart Gordon Sercial 1960 or a Blandy’s Verdelho 1973 are among the most interesting options for those who were lucky to be born on one of those years. Still older is the Blandy’s Bual 1957 or the award-winning Blandy’s Sercial 1968. Offering one of these wines can cost anywhere between 195 and 300 euros.

The choice could also fall on Justino’s Madeira Verdelho 1954, a Boal 1964 or 1978, a Justino’s Madeira Malvasia 1964 or 1988 and still a Terrantez 1978. For someone slightly older Justino’s has the Sercial 1940 and 1944, the Verdelho 1934,

the Boal 1934 or the Malvasia 1933.

Among the younger and older ones these wines could represent a gift costing between 360 and 1,300 euros. Each bottle is sealed and given a unique number.

The list could also include a Henriques & Henriques Sercial, bottled in 1965, or a Malvasia 1964. These were inherited by J.J. Henriques who founded the firm in 1850, a time when these wines were already considered old. The years on the labels refer to the year the wine is bottled.

In this case, depending on how rare they are, wines can cost between 2,800 and 3,100 euros.

Birthdays, though, are just one kind of ceremony with which Madeira Wine is associated. On the island, it is the beverage that is usually served in receptions for solemn events.

It is also used to celebrate special dates, and even the birthdays of companies or institutions. This is because the www.essential-madeira.com 75

One such wine is Blandy’s Bual 1920, a wine considered excellent by Blandy’s oenologist Francisco Albuquerque. A single bottle sells for 600 euros, slightly less than Henriques & Henriques Founder’s Solera 1894, a sweet wine about which only the date of bottling is known. It sells for around 800 euros a bottle.

A world of flavours A tribute to poncha and chefs from seven countries. The Stars Route is back on and yet again the Il Gallo D’Oro was its first stop Uma homenagem à poncha e chefes de sete países. A Rota das Estrelas está de novo na estrada e o Il Gallo D’Oro voltou a ser o ponto de partida TEXT PAULO SANTOS

white smoke emanates from the containers at the centre of the room.

This is because of liquid nitrogen, used by the French chef duo David and Noëlle Faure in their preparation of a dessert which is a creative version of poncha, the traditional Madeiran beverage. Except their version is solid, with a texture reminiscent of a meringue.

The dessert had all it could have: flavour, creativity, panache. It is an example of what an haute cuisine level gastronomic festival can be like. The unexpected blends with techniques and flavours. It is also representative of what was comprised by the opening event of the Stars Route which was hosted at the Il Gallo D’Oro in Funchal.

The host chef, Benoît Sinthon explains the idea: ‘the inspiration is the flavour of poncha’. Still they could have gone for vanilla ‘but it was passionfruit cream’. It was ‘a very beautiful tribute to poncha’, he concludes.

The Stars Route hits the road for the ninth consecutive year and Benoît Sinthon reiterates the goal: to bring about ‘new encounters and great friends’. Those we have met ‘bring us security. We’re sure that it will go ok. And newcomers bring that freshness’.

There were 11 chefs in Madeira from restaurants in seven countries, one of the most international events ever. Paul Ivic* travelled from Austria and illustrates the novelty factor.

A sobremesa tem tudo o que podia ter: sabor, criatividade, espetáculo. É também representativo do que foi o evento de abertura da Rota das Estrelas, que voltou a ter como palco o Il Gallo D’Oro, no Funchal.

Benoît Sinthon and ‘I love working with vegetables’.

Another first-timer was Bart de Pooter** who travelled from northern Belgium where he has led a two Michelin star restaurant for 12 years. Despite the preference given to vegetables he took on the challenge of cooking lobster, though vegetables were present. For the chef 'everyone brings a bit of their personality’ to festivals. These events are about ‘a bit of food, a bit of communication and a bit of discovery’.

The other guests had had previous contact with the Stars Route, like the chefs of four out of the five Portuguese restaurants that hold two Michelin stars, Dieter Koschina, Hans Neuner and Ricardo Costa, joined

by Benoît Sinthon, also holder of two stars, for the final dinner.

Finnish Hans Välimäki and Frenchman Olivier Barbarin were also on the guest list.

The Stars Route also crossed the Atlantic for the first time last year to be held in Brazil. Kazuo Harada* travelled in the opposite direction. The Mee, in the famous Copacabana Palace in Rio de Janeiro, where he is chef, will also host the route this year. That stage will start in Rio de Janeiro and finish in Foz do Iguaçu.

In a country the size of Brazil there are only 18 restaurants with one Michelin star and one with two. That is why participating in the festival ‘more than presenting our work is about learning from chefs and updating oneself in the market’ Harada says. ‘It was the first time I cooked at a www.essential-madeira.com 83

É o chefe anfitrião, Benoît Sinthon quem explica a ideia: «A inspiração é o sabor da poncha». E a opção podia ter sido por outro sabor como baunilha, «mas foi creme de maracujá». Tratou-se de «uma homenagem muito bonita à poncha», conclui.

A Rota das Estrelas está na estrada pelo nono ano consecutivo e Benoît Sinthon reitera o objetivo: trazer «os novos encontros e os grandes amigos». Os que já conhecem «trazemnos segurança. Temos a certeza que vai correr bem. E os novos dão aquela frescura.»

Traduzindo por nomes, na Madeira estiveram 11 chefes, de restaurantes em sete países, um dos eventos mais internacionais de sempre.

Paul Ivic* viajou da Áustria e representa a novidade. «Ele trouxe algumas técnicas novas para nós», explica Benôit Sinthon e «eu adoro trabalhar legumes».

Outro estreante foi Bart de Pooter** que viajou do norte da Bélgica, onde há 12 anos lidera um restaurante com duas estrelas Michelin.

Apesar da preferência por vegetais aceitou o desafio de cozinhar lagosta, mas os vegetais estavam presentes. Para o chefe nos festivais «todos trazem um pouco da sua personalidade».

Estes eventos são «um pouco de comida, um pouco de comunicação e um pouco de descoberta».

Os restantes convidados já antes tiveram contato com a Rota das Estrelas, como os chefes de quatro dos cinco restaurantes portugueses com duas estrelas Michelin, Dieter Koschina, Hans Neuner e Ricardo Costa, a que se juntou Benoît Sinthon, também com duas estrelas, para o jantar final.

restaurant awarded two Michelin stars and several star-holding chefs and that is something I will carry with me for the rest of my life’.

Michel van der Kroft**, another participating chef, has been invited for several events in this festival. The Dutch chef speaks about ‘cooking with heart’ because ‘a recipe isn’t just 100 grams of this or 50 grams of that, it is intuition and cooking with a lot of sense’.

He prepared smoked mackerel but the proximity to Portugal broadened his selection of Portuguese products to include black pork or Serra da Estrela cheese.

Because of this Benoît Sinthon concludes: ‘We hosted three fabulous dinners, with great technique, great products, great atmosphere’.

‘New products, new ideas, new techniques that allow us to grow together’ were revealed.

O finlandês Hans Välimäki e o francês Olivier Barbarin fizeram igualmente parte da lista de convidados. A Rota das Estrelas também cruzou o Atlântico pela primeira vez o ano passado e realizou-se no Brasil. Em sentido contrário viajou Kazuo Harada*,chefe do Mee,no famoso Copacabana Palace, no Rio de Janeiro, que este ano é também organizador. A etapa da ‘Rota’ começa no Rio de Janeiro e acaba em Foz do Iguaçu.

Num país do tamanho do Brasil só há 18 restaurantes com uma estrela e um com duas.

Por isso a participação no festival, «mais do que apresentar o nosso trabalho é aprender com os chefes e se atualizar no mercado», define Harada. «Foi a primeira vez que cozinhei num restaurante com duas estrelas Michelin e com vários chefes estrelados, e isso vai marcar-me para o resto da vida». www.essential-madeira.com 84

Michel van der Kroft**, outro dos chefes participantes, tem sido convidado para diversos eventos deste festival. O chefe holandês fala em «cozinhar com o coração» porque «uma receita não é só 100 gramas disto ou 50 gramas daquilo, é intuição e cozinhar com muito sentido». Preparou cavala fumada, mas a proximidade com Portugal alarga o leque de produtos portugueses que utiliza, como o porco preto, ou o queijo da Serra da Estrela.

Por isto Benoît Sinthon conclui: «Fizemos três jantares fabulosos, com grande técnica, grandes produtos, grande ambiente». Foram revelados «produtos novos, ideias novas, técnicas novas, que permitem crescermos todos juntos».

The host bases his invitations on customers: ‘we know our customer, we know the point up to which he is willing to share. There can’t be big surprises! The Il Gallo D’Oro has its own cuisine genre and what is important is to bring novelties, but always in our spirit.’

Certainty was a word uttered many a time in the Il Gallo D’Oro. Not irrelevant to this is the fact that the restaurant holds two Michelin stars. But ‘the more chefs come by the more we learn, the more we share’ explains Sinthon who recalls how ‘the event was created for this: ‘Chefs awarded stars invite other chefs awarded stars and we’re back to basics, that is really important’.

The juggling of talents birthed three menus which Benoît Sinthon considers to be ‘full of identity’. The dishes were paired with wines, 18 references over the festival’s three days served by guest sommeliers João Chambel, António Lopes and George dos Santos and the award-winning host Sérgio Marques.

Among the wines served was Madeira wine, in the form of cask of Blandy’s Blend Sercial 1997, especially for the Stars Route. A ‘flagon Madeira’ from a private producer’s batch located by Sérgio Marques.

Segurança foi uma palavra muitas vezes repetida no Il Gallo D’Oro. A isso não é alheio o facto de o restaurante ter duas estrelas Michelin.

Mas «quanto mais chefes passam por aqui mais aprendemos, mais partilhamos», explica Sinthon que lembra que «o evento foi criado para isto: «Chefes com estrelas convidam outros chefes com estrelas e voltámos ao básico, que é muito importante».

Da combinação de talentos nasceram três menus que Benoît Sinthon considera «cheios de identidade». Os pratos foram acompanhados por vinhos, 18 referências nos três dias de festival, servidos pelos sommeliers convidados João Chambel, António Lopes e Georges dos Santos e pelo anfitrião e premiado Sérgio Marques.

Entre os vinhos servidos estava Madeira, com uma barrica de Blandy’s Blend Sercial 1997, especial para a Rota das Estrelas. Mas também foi servido um ‘Madeira do garrafão’, um lote localizado por Sérgio Marques junto de um produtor privado. Um verdadeiro achado! 쐽

A

t Fábrica do Ribeiro Sêco, sugarcane has never known any fate other than being turned into syrup ever since 1935. Back then the mills in Madeira were going through a crisis as a result of a law from 1927 which decreed the closure of most rum manufactures.

The initiative of the then owner Luís Vogado Bettencourt was a turning point in the history of the Ribeiro Sêco factory and its product has since then become a landmark of Madeiran gastronomy.

The most recent success story was when sugarcane syrup won two out of three stars at the ‘O Melhor Sabor – Great Taste’ awards, alongside some of Portugal’s finest products.

The two stars category signifies an ‘exceptional’ product. For one of the managing partners, the award was ‘gratifying because it was won on the first attempt’ to have sugarcane syrup up in contest. As ambitions start to run higher, the goal now lies in entering the race for international awards.

esde 1935 que na Fábrica do Ribeiro Sêco o destino a dar à cana-de-açúcar é o mel-de-cana.Nessa altura os engenhos espalhados pela Madeira atravessavam uma crise,consequência de uma lei de 1927 que determinou o encerramento da maior das produções de rum.

A iniciativa do então proprietário, Luís Vogado Bettencourt, marcou uma viragem na história da fábrica e deste produto que hoje é uma referência na gastronomia da Madeira.

O episódio mais recente foi a conquista pelo mel-de-cana, de duas estrelas, em três possíveis, nos prémios ‘O Melhor Sabor – Great Taste’, ao lado de alguns dos melhores produtos portugueses.

A categoria de duas estrelas indica um produto ‘excecional’. Para um dos sócios-gerentes, o prémio foi «gratificante, por ter sido alcançado numa primeira tentativa» de apresentar o mel-de-cana a concurso. A ambição agora é maior e a Fábrica do Ribeiro Sêco quer entrar na corrida pela conquista de prémios internacionais.

produced over the course of a year starting March or April with harvests mostly in the west of Madeira, owing to the favourable weather with there being plenty of sun and water which ensures a good degree of sucrose, the key to this trade.

Canes are shredded in two mills. The process is repeated so as to extract the largest amount of sugarcane syrup in liquid state in a way which purges some of its impurities.

Afterwards, the individual ‘purifiers’ are used for boiling. So as to ensure that quality standards are rigorously met, a second filtration is then carried out in filters full of taps.

Almost at the end of the process, the juice is taken to the evaporators. There, it continues to boil and is further separated from all the water in it. The result is a nectar that already has the colour and flavour of sugarcane though it is still quite liquefied.

Finally there is another boiling and a last filtration. Before the latter syrup is placed in a vacuum boiler. Afterwards the syrup is then placed in reservoirs where it will rest for 21 to 23 hours while it acquires the attributes for which it is known. 쐽

Na fábrica as canas são trituradas em dois moinhos, os engenhos. O processo é repetido para retirar a maior quantidade de sumo da cana, a guarapa, líquido que é para separar algumas impurezas.

De seguida, nos “clarificadores” individuais realiza-se um tempo de cozedura. Para garantir o rigor e a qualidade é feita uma segunda filtração, efetuada em filtros repletos de torneiras.

Quase na conclusão do processo, a guarapa é levada para as evaporadoras. Aí continua a sua cozedura e a separação de toda a quantidade de água existente. O resultado é um néctar que possui a cor e o sabor do mel-de-cana, mas ainda num estado muito líquido.

Por fim, existe outra cozedura e uma última filtração. Dessa é precedida a colocação do xarope na caldeira de vácuo, o qual é posteriormente armazenado nos reservatórios.

Nesses, e ao longo de 21 a 23 horas, o produto final assenta até adquirir as caraterísticas que lhe são atribuídas. 쐽 www.essential-madeira.com 89

enoît Sinthon, Chef at the Il Gallo D’Oro restaurant, was one of the people invited by Portuguese porcelain brand Vista Alegre to design a porcelain plate for haute cuisine.

The result was the Espiral Gourmand.

Described as a multifunctional plate, it shows a manifest character while still preserving the quality of products and the delicacy of fine presentation.

Vista Alegre describes the project as a challenge to the ‘most revered national and international cuisine chefs’. The collective enterprise resulted in the creation of ‘sophisticated and exclusive pieces that blend the Vista Alegre primacy of design with the creativity and practical sense demanded by gastronomy of excellence’.

The project has already extended to several countries, keeping up with the Portuguese brand in international markets and ‘boosting, through this alliance with the true masters in the art of fine service its acknowledged status as a reference brand – where innovation, elegance and quality are concerned’.

Invitations were made to Benoît Sinthon as well as to Vitor Matos, Vitor Sobral and Rui Paula. The partnership extended to selling the plates in retail so consumers have the chance to collect them. This was not the first time Benoît Sinthon collaborated with Vista Alegre in the creation of a porcelain plate. 쐽

iso is situated in the trendy historical centre of Funchal on top of a cliff over the sea.

At Riso, where rice is King, we have a full range of dishes from the well known traditional Portuguese to the very fashionable risotto’s and exotic Asian delights. Here you may find the four corners of the world.

The first sign of quality, which we notice, is the use of homemade stock and of course the large variety of different types of rice. Risottos are prepared with Vianole, Arborio or Venere. The list is almost endless, red Thai rice, Basmati, Jasmine rice and even rice paper is used in some of the delicious starters in a real journey through the world of rice.

The suggestions run from the freshness of the fruits, such as avocado or pineapple, to a variety of meats and fish, especially the scabbard fish and the tuna, two major ingredients on a Madeirian table.

Other not so typical dishes, equally as enjoyable, are available for those who have yet to surrender to our crowned cereal. Roasted Cod Fish with Chickpea Falafel and Yogurt and Lime sauce is one of the preferred choices.

Desserts are no exception to this rice tradition, one “must” on the sweets menu is the delicious Thai black rice with coconut milk served with fresh mango slices or alternatively a sweet rice ice cream.

The restaurant is an architectural masterpiece, tastefully decorated, which blends in harmoniously to the quaint neighbouring buildings. Besides the top floor there is a covered veranda, which is used all year around taking full advantage of the region’s temperate climate.

All the restaurant’s tables look out over the sea and the location is so special that many patrons say that it’s like dining on a yacht.
