MESSAGE FROM THE PUBLISHER

OUR NEWEST WRITER/PRACTITIONER

Happy New Year! I have just returned from Maui, where I had the most beautiful time of my life. The vacation was a gift to me from my daughter, and I spent 10 days in the sun and on the beaches with my family. During that 10 days I reflected on the warmth and gentleness of this tropical island paradise. There is definitely an energy around everything - an energy of love, respect, kindness, gentleness, peace. The Hawaiian’s connection with nature and the environment is evident in the island’s wind farms and solar panels on almost every home and business, and the respect paid to the environment was noticeable. I was struck by the contrast between Maui and most provinces in Canada where I live. The beauty and life force of Maui greatly affected me and I am living a new intention. The ho’oponopono prayer came to mind. I am sorry. Please forgive me. Thank you. I love you. This healing prayer raises your vibration, helps you maintain a positive outlook, and release negativity. What is the meaning of ho’oponopono? Simply: To make it right.

DR. STEPHEN HOBBS YOUR NAVIGATOR OF THE GATES!

Once Upon a Roadblock |My Three Minute Mentor Story My work, now my legacy project, was born of a 3-minute mentoring connection on a road in Uganda, Eastern Africa in 1987. Moving between work locations when you encounter a pile of rocks in the middle of the road, in daylight - with soldiers around, it's a military roadblock. At one, a soldier walked to the truck door, sticking a machine gun in the window. For 3 minutes of answering questions, an array of thoughts whipped through my mind. Even with the apparent wobbling of the weapon in the front of my face, patience, flexibility, and discretion remained forefront in my responses via my driver.

As I drove away, looking through the side mirror, I swore my work focus would escalate to eco-creating the well-living world - a world in which all kin and wild kin flourish together. Where people have more options in living their extraordinary lives than to point a machine gun at someone. From this experience, along with quiet reflection and innumerable conversations, with family, friends, workshop participants, business associates, and strangers at airports, two words started blinking like a neon sign

With a huff and puff, the person said, "move

welcoming me to the diner.

on."

"Those words were "wellth" and "movement."

As we pulled away, I asked my driver, "How old was the soldier?" He said she was about 14 years old.

Yes - my three-minute mentor was a 14year-old -now woman- soldier who had difficulty holding the heavy weapon in her hands. She had to hold face among her fellow soldiers sitting and laughing nearby. She had to stay present to ensure proper questioning, all while holding the heavy machine gun. I appreciate her and what she was living.

Here, as I add to this story, you can read my short bio, before moving into the magazine where you'll find my article: Use Wise Nature Journaling Practices to Evoke Wonder through Nature Wandering Article is #2 in the series of 3 (December 2023, January 2024, February 2024)

BEGIN THE NEW YEAR

BY CONNECTING TO THE UNSEEN MAGIC

OF IMAGINATION

You’ve heard it said that the “best things in life are free”. Living in a world focused on materialism leaves out one of the richest experiences we can have. Here is how a teacher opened the door that changed my life. She led me to understand how the arts are a portal to a world of imagination, healing, and life’s purpose.

|14

www.opalpublishing.ca

CONNECTING TO THE UNSEEN MAGIC OF IMAGINATION

During a family gathering, my daughter-in-law explained how classical music enriched her life. In the background, Christmas music from Handle’s Messiah was softly winging through the room. Throughout childhood, her family attended concerts, theater, and had access to great literature. She’d been blessed to hear and see the unseen magic in the arts. I wasn’t. Until one day my music teacher opened my eyes.

Then our music teacher began explaining that there is more than one way to see than with our eyes. Our third grade class filed into the school auditorium. We took our seats in the dimly lit rows. Curiosity about what was to happen bubbled over. Then our music teacher began explaining that there is more than one way to see than with our eyes. Wow! Really? She told us that our minds paint pictures using our imaginations. The enchantment of reading and hearing is seeing a story unfold in your mind. She said, “Mind pictures stay in your memories far better than only watching with your eyes. Words make pictures. And sound has magic like that too. Without anyone else’s pictures or directions, you’ll see the story in your own unique way.”

AI can’t touch this! We humans crave beauty, satisfaction, and possibility in our lives. Our auditorium had a high quality audio system that made the sound seem to come alive. Teacher instructed us to get comfortable, shut our eyes, and listen deeply to the music to allow the pictures to freely form. Of course, these images happen involuntarily every time you read or hear a word. But, this was the first time I intentionally let a wordless symphony of sound take me on its adventure. It was breathtakingly wonderful! We each shared our impressions of the different musical pieces with the class. I was amazed how different the stories were. She played a variety of classical pieces, some opera, some jazz, some lighthearted broadway tunes and Western movie scores. Our class was an hour long. I could have stayed for years. It was the first time that music caused tears to flow down my nine year old cheeks. But not the last time of being overwhelmed by its majesty. A few years later the hours of studying and playing music in my school band eased the pain of a dysfunctional family life and healed teenage drama. It was Art Therapy before I knew of such a thing. The sound and the vibrations of the beautiful music gave me strength and peace. The teacher’s seed of music appreciation was growing roots.

AI can’t touch this! We humans crave beauty, satisfaction, and possibility in our lives. My teacher told us that our minds can see more than what’s before our eyes. We don’t have to settle for the ordinary or the glum. This unseen magic is free and happens to every mind. There it was! The essence of creativity! The magic had a name and a process.

CONNECTING TO THE UNSEEN MAGIC OF IMAGINATION

As I later became an art teacher to thousands of students, I used her teaching techniques to inspire their minds through visualization. I taught them how to use their imaginations while I played music related to the subject they were learning to paint. My music teacher’s vision was still planting seeds. To be beneficial, the imagination has to be directed. It’s a double edged sword. You want the good that you imagine to come into your life.

Use this Bible verse as a measure: Philippians 4:8 “Finally brothers, whatever is true, honorable, just, pure, lovely, whatever is commendable, if there is any excellence, anything worthy of praise, think of these things.”

We all know what the opposite of any of these standards are, so let’s not bring that to us. Refuse to park your thoughts there. Keep it true and positive.

Put the phone and social media away for at least an hour a day! Play an instrumental piece of music and relax into it while enjoying the images coming into your mind. Choose a genre that resonates with your soul. Record what you see and feel in your journal. Test other music and record the results. Ask a child what they see when you play an instrumental music piece with them- try the score from “Star Wars” or one of John Williams’ movie scores. You will be opening doors. Don’t let a closed attitude toward exploring the unseen deter you. As one young woman said, ”I only listen to music with modern words!” One dimensional life is eventually shallow and unsatisfying. Be a giver, like my music teacher. Create moments for others to use their imaginations. Everybody in your life needs more awareness of the unseen beauty of creativity in their lives. I don’t know who she was. I can’t remember what she looked like. But that day a music teacher changed a little girl’s life. It was the birth of an artist. And it was through the unseen magic of imagination.

“Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.” Hebrews 11:1

QUARTZ GEODE Not Just a Regular Rock We held in our palms a rock, not just a regular rock, a Quartz Geode filled with energy ready to escape into our souls. The room is quiet and we listen to the sound of our breath. The meditation music begins to play, healing our Heart Chakra. Channeling a Meditation for Self Love using a Quartz Geode. The words come naturally from my lips to those in need.

Being an Empath my heart begins to feel the shift of energy from hurt to love again. This group was ready to shift and own the strength to move forward through healing of their Heart Chakra. I continued the journey of Healing Meditation until it was time. “Take a deep breath in and release all of what is not needed now. Open your eyes. Now we will take a moment to Open Your Heart.” Each person of this group began to hit the Quartz Geode with a hammer and I watched. Some hit hard others lightly and carefully. Once the beauty of the Quartz Geode was exposed

A perfect Heart presented itself. You couldn’t have made the break if you wanted to; it was a sign. A sign of true love for self. At that moment when the hammer hit the Geode their soul was ready to see the greatest gift of LOVE again. Tears and laughter filled the room. The words came from their lips “I will cherish forever” I smiled. Moments that are a gift to self to remember you are always loved. The Quartz Geode comes from volcanic rock. Isolated pockets with crystals growing of lava. Growing on the walls being created by heated gasses and steam. Quick cooling forms the crystals within, sealing it to become a “rock”. We often use it for rituals, ceremonies and healing journeys. Once cracked it will provide energy to the room, or the one who holds it, balance, clarity and increases your immune system. With many metaphysical properties, it amplifies energy with healing such as manifesting, meditation. It is a powerful protective stone for you spiritually, mentally and emotionally. This rock’s energy pulls you in, to be curious about what's inside. Cracking or simply having it gives you a feeling of being protected and that you have the ability to shine always.

New parks, new places, doesn’t have to cost much if anything at all, as long as you spend time with your animal loved ones its a day they will always love you for!!! My little boy disappeared a year ago. I don't know if he disappeared to pass over or did something happen to him? Not knowing is so emotional. Nicky Risner - Scottsville, KY This is heartbreaking to hear. Thank you for having the courage to write in. Although it is hard to lose a pet pal this way, animal communications can help to find closure. This little pup is in a better place. I do feel like this dog was picked up and helped. I get that when he crossed he was warm and in a better place now mommy is literally what I heard. He is so comfortable and enjoying the sunshine that being over the rainbow bridge affords. He says he went for a walk. He had every intention of coming home, but was met along the way by people that saw him and picked him up. He would have been lost and found by others, so even if they did not find him, someone else would have. They cared for him as best they could. He also said that he is okay with how he left and did miss you, but he realizes now how hard it would have been for you to see him go. He didn’t want to go to the vet anymore is also what I hear. From what I can see as an animal communicator no matter how much you loved this little biggy, this awesome big man he wanted a bit of an adventure not realizing the universe had other plans. He sees this now and is okay, but sorry he didn’t get to see you one last time. What I love about animal communications is there is no “one last time. There is always a way to find that connection. |20

ANGEL’S ANIMAL CORNER

I would like to know if Blaire is in pain. Nancy Pearson - Bradford, Ont.

Blaire is a unique dog with a high tolerance for so much. Lots of Sassiness in this little baby. I get that she is achy, but you're doing a great job. I hear no more meds are required. This is a life lesson dog here to teach you that you are not only compassionate, but how deep your compassion grows. She’s happy. It feels like she lifts one leg to favor it? She really communicates her feelings through her physicality. Also, her hearing feels foggy. Again, content and very much adapting to her circumstances. Her guides show me that you are a great family for her and not to worry. She will always be fine on this journey we call life.

How is he truly feeling? He has a new diagnosis and I really hope he is coping with it and the medications well Susan - Pet Pat family member Rufus is such a loving soul! He feels achy and tries not to pay attention to it. He says it can be distracting. He likes the “treats” you give him (the meds) and it makes him feel better. I heard from his guides and guardians that he is going to be okay and you are adding years to his life with each step you take. This is a great thing! He’s an awesome boy and wants to feel good for you, and for himself. He also says he would like to play more. I know it’s in our nature to worry about those we love. In this case, worry a bit less and play a bit more. He will let you know when he is tired. He will let you know when he’s had enough. He’s sorry he’s slowing down, but is grateful for the man who continues to play with him. He is okay on walks. I also heard. Please give meds after evening walk? I hope that resonates! Hope all is well and that your year with Rufus is a lovely and fairly active one!

Astrology & the Heavens

Veronica Weston, Moonologer

On Thursday January 11th, we will welcome the first New Moon of 2024. By now, you may have given thought to your New Year’s Resolutions, but don’t forget that with your Moonology practice, you get a chance to revisit your resolutions every month of the year as the moon goes dark and restarts its cycle. If you want to make Resolutions that manifest results, here are some goal writing tips that work for me and my clients: Take some time to clear your mind and reflect deeply about your wants, needs and desires. Listen to your inner voice and use discernment to identify what you really want, as opposed to what you think you “should” want. Identify your WHY. When our goals have a higher purpose, we tend to stay motivated and are willing to work harder to achieve them. Create a vision of your future self-achieving your goal. How does it feel? Immerse yourself in the gratitude of the moment. Identify how you need to be today, and every day, in order to achieve this goal. Remember, the process of achieving a goal is an exercise in personal development, to become the version of yourself that has what you desire. Create an anchor statement. A word or phrase that you can remember, which will bring you back to your goal. An anchor statement must resonate with you no matter how you feel, to assist you in honouring your commitment to yourself and your goal. Write it all down in a journal. Putting your goals onto paper starts the manifesting process. Holistic Wellness and Mind Body Soul Balance

NEW YEAR - NEW MOON

January is the most popular month for people to set health goals so let’s use this as an example and go through the process. Upon reflection, we identify that it is time to adapt a healthier lifestyle because that is aligned with our values and the future we want for ourselves. Through meditation, we release all external programming and expectations, practicing acceptance, we choose to honour ourselves moving forward. Choosing a higher purpose for this health goal means digging deeper than the personal or superficial benefits. For example: Having more energy for raising children, or having more stamina for community work and volunteering. As you visualize a healthier, stronger, more energetic self; imagine the activities this person engages in. Maybe they dance, or run, or climb mountains. Hear the music, feel the feet hitting the ground, smell the fresh air. Some habits or practices one might need to embody for a healthier lifestyle can include meal planning, exercise, improved sleep, meditation, more meaningful connection with others, etc… An anchor statement for a healthier lifestyle could be: I honour myself with the choices I make. Or, I am committed and disciplined in order to become the healthiest version of me.

Carol Pilkington, Spiritual Counselor/Teacher and Transpersonal Astrologer

Embracing the Sorrow In our culture of do, do, do we are not taught how much less encouraged to embrace the sorrow, to go into it. Instead, we are swallowed up by the sorrow and we don’t even realize from one day to the next or one year to the next how numb we have actually become. With each blow of a loss, disappointment or significant life event we are jolted and shocked into an altered state, No human is immune to experiencing some kind of loss and ensuing grief. There is sorrow around relationships, loneliness, sorrow of anxiety, limitation in physical or mental agility due to illness or age or disappointments throughout life, opportunities missed, loss of status, etc. So, it isn’t just sorrow around death. There is another kind of sorrow that we collectively live with which we personalize and internalize that is the condition of humanity itself. Sorrow is all around us. We receive messages either outright or subliminally that we should not indulge in or waste time crying over spilt milk as the saying goes and to get on or move on with life. Therefore, we avoid and escape sorrow at all costs. The grieving process is not given the honor it deserves and as a result it accumulates over time. Life may become dull and meaningless and others throw themselves into work that no longer satisfies or brings them joy, if ever it did.

especially when it comes to someone we hold dear. Each incident we are given an opportunity to awaken to the depth of the sorrow that has engulfed us. We often hear people say what they are feeling is surreal. What makes it surreal is possibly the fact that one has been momentarily shocked back to Life. Some may even see these shocks as, what’s been termed, wake up calls. I understand there may be those reading this and saying if I allow myself to feel the sorrow fully, I fear I won’t ever stop crying. It feels like I would fall into a dark bottomless well of emotion. The good news is that the well does have a bottom. We are not used to validating our feelings and allowing a process to unfold that can open us to discovering and learning something new about ourselves. Have you ever gone to see a tear-jerker movie where you feel it gave you permission to have a good cry? But even then, you felt you needed to put a plug in it after a while out of fear of not being able to stop.

my sleeve and I should not give too much. I never understood that. The floodgates would open up when something touched me deeply. But I also saw that it made people feel uncomfortable and so I began to keep it all bottled up and only let it out when I was alone. There were times in my life that I would allow myself to sob and weep for hours alone and in the dark and while it was cathartic for a short period, I realized I was ill-equipped to address the nature of the sorrow. When I’m asked about the work I do around anxiety, depression and grief/loss people often say it must be so difficult to stay positive and not feel the weight of others' pain and sorrow. for so long that I wasn’t able to distinguish where it came from or what it was all about. When I began my own transformational journey, I found a teacher that could guide me in a constructive way to consciously acknowledge and to go into what I had been unconsciously burying for years. Along the way I discovered that the sorrow was a mixture of my own personal experiences of events that happened in my life but also at some point I took on the sorrows of the world. The latter was a revelation to me because I didn’t remember making a decision to do that. It all felt insurmountable. It felt like sorrow was who and what I am. Stress (including the incessant chatter) hijacks the thinking part of your brain. And leaves it at the mercy of the emotional brain and unconscious behavior. It is absolutely essential to have a collection of tools and techniques that can bring you back to the present moment and reconnect you to the calm and inner peace at your core. 2. Connect with Your Heart: Your brain does not have the capacity to manage your life, especially when things are challenging. Your heart does. Your brain’s function is to support your heart. Recent experiments in heart-brain coherence show clearly how when the heart and the brain resonate to the same frequency (0.1 Hz), everything functions better. ANGER Part Two: Why are women in Any woman on the planet can agree that there is a tidal wave of women’s rage. I have only to mention sex trafficking, genital mutilation and the #MeToo movement to conjure collective deep rage. On a less dramatic and more universal level, gender inequality in society and in the workplace are core places to experience our anger. Studies suggest there are some common routes to anger for women, most notably our feelings of our powerlessness and injustice. Women are paid less, they are not as valued in the workplace, and when they hit glass ceilings it's very hard for them to earn more. This imbalance continues into the domestic arena. When a woman is working and she comes home from work, she feels she must do so much more than the man does. When it comes to child-rearing women again are far more responsible than men. A lot of women do not feel listened to, they don't feel valued, they don't feel appreciated, and they don't feel supported.

this world angry? Young girls and women learn early, most notably from their mothers that there are penalties for displaying anger. Why do we learn as girls to ignore those feelings? I came into this world with the belief, the knowing, that I was here on Earth to contribute to Life. My mother told me that when I was around the age of three, I walked into the kitchen with my hands on my hips and announced to her that I was here on a MISSION. I knew I had something to say. I am sure you knew you did, as well. But also, I was to learn the well-known and demoralizing story of “Too Much”. Too loud. Too bossy. Too self-confident. Too sensitive. Too needy. Too pushy. Too crazy. For the record, I have been called all of these. I AM all of these, according to those in my circles for whom my exuberance for life and my engagement in society has triggered. And, in response, I have twisted myself into multiple incarnations to fit in and be accepted, so much so that I have lost my voice, lost my self-respect, and felt myself the victim, not only by those I perceive have kept me down, but by myself.

THE RELUCTANT LEADER

I was raised by parents who came of age in the 50s, when girls were sugar and spice and everything nice. My parents were the quintessential good parents, the good daughter married the good son, prone to following the rules, side stepping confrontation and fitting into suburbia. My mother was my best friend and greatest fan, and I lived her unrequited dream of performing. My father, angry at his own parents, tossed aside his natural rebel spirit for parenthood and took his anger out on my burgeoning creative thinking and preternatural ability to communicate. It was all there in my DNA. The good girl and the angry rebel. MY ANGER In her powerhouse book, Rage Becomes Her, Soroya Chemaly said “There is not a woman alive who does not understand that women’s anger is openly reviled.” By the time she was a young adult, Chemaly had developed the firm belief that she was not someone who experienced anger. She didn't identify feelings of anger in herself at all. How many of us can relate to that? As the perpetual optimist, one who walked through the world with a large, enthusiastic life force as a child and a young adult, I certainly can. When I was 9 years old my parents moved us to their hometown of Pittsburgh, and I started in my new elementary school two days after we arrived. My first day began well. I enjoyed the curiosity of the other school children toward me. After lunch, we had a half hour of playtime outside. There was a large parking lot abutting a large baseball field. This particular day, there was a game of keep away going on, with two teams. I meandered across the concrete to the field, longing to join the game. Would I be asked? You see, the game was being played by boys only.

|46

Turns out, they were as curious about me, as I was eager to play, and finally I was put onto one of the teams. It didn't take long for them to see that I was a fast runner, so of course, the ball was given to me. And I was off. No one could catch me. Turns out, my running caught the attention of the girls back on the concrete, and some of them came over to watch, along with some of the boys, huffing and puffing. The game came to stop, and I could feel the admiration of the boys, some looking down, and dirt kicking. And then the bell rang, the spell was broken, and we were back in class. THE NEXT DAY COULDN’T COME FAST ENOUGH…. Next month: Part Three

Time to Rest, Slow Down, and

Plant Your ‘Idea’ Seeds In the northern hemisphere we are experiencing the middle of winter. It is cold, the sun is minimal, and most of us are staying indoors more than other times of the year. Outside, the plants and animals are hibernating and dormant. During this time, we may also feel like we are in a dormant state. We tend to stay inside, bundle up, we might feel like sleeping more, settling in, etc… but we can’t see this as being lazy. Whether we realize it or not, a lot of growth is happening during this time.

This dormant state is imperative to what will happen in the rest of the year.

As a child, I vividly remember when visiting my grandparents, I would see various containers throughout the house with tiny delicate plants, seedlings, just beginning to sprout from the dirt. They knew they had to plant the seeds of the vegetables many, many months ahead of when they would be harvested.

|48

If they waited to plant the seeds, the plants would not have grown fully when the weather began to change and the harvest would have been small, if at all. The cycles of the year show us a great deal about our own growth and progression. If we also take this dark, cold, winter time to refrain from being filled with extra activities and busyness, we will create the space to plant seeds for the year ahead and our future.

When we rest and slow down, we are able to connect with parts of ourselves we don’t normally make time for. We can use our imagination, daydream, and be creative. Knowing that a seed grows into a seedling, and then into a plant that we can harvest, this is the ideal time to come up with those ideas too, which you can plant in your consciousness, like seeds in soil.

2024 BUSINESS PRACTICES If you tend to see the glass as half full, then you must be eagerly anticipating all the new opportunities for your online channels. On the flip side, if you lean more towards a glass half-empty perspective, you might be aware of the lengthy list of tasks you wanted completed by 2023. There’s so much more carried over onto your 2024 To-Do List. Striking a healthy balance means acknowledging that both viewpoints are true. In the new year, I urge my clients and audiences to assess all their social channels —active, abandoned, and “meaning to revisit” —and to update their profiles. Why is it important to update your bios and profiles? It is crucial to keep your social media profiles up to date because, aside from the content your visitors have just consumed, their natural next step is to check out the profile it came from, especially if they aren’t not familiar with you. However, the information from your last profile update won't necessarily reflect who you are or what you currently do.

So, seize this opportunity to revamp all your online and offline social profiles to introduce yourself to the world. Imagine reading your profiles as if you were a stranger encountering them for the first time. 1. Is this information still accurate? 2. Has any of this information become outdated? 3. Are there any details missing since your last update? Once you've refreshed and completed your active social bios and profiles, don't overlook your abandoned channels. Even while you may have moved on, others might still stumble upon them and should know what you do now. In fact, I recommend practicing this routine every six months to ensure that your profiles continue to serve your interests even when you're not actively present. Keep them current and relevant to steer people toward your offerings. If you’re ready to kick off 2024 with a clear vision and a winning strategy, join me at my annual workshop JUMPSTART 2024 WITH YOUR BIG GOAL on Saturday, January 6!
