In the autumn term of 2017, Out of the Ark Music, in collaboration with Professor Susan Hallam MBE, conducted a major research project into the most effective ways of integrating music (and singing in particular) into the school curriculum: from whole-school singing assemblies and music lessons, through to support for the wider curriculum and even classroom management.

The results surprised even us!

It has long been established that incorporating music into children’s education, especially in primary settings, can positively impact learning in other curriculum areas. It was encouraging, therefore, to see this reflected in the findings from this project. Whether it is using music explicitly to help remember facts and recall information, or more generally to create an environment to promote effective learning, there is no doubt that integrating music right across the curriculum can result in improvement in almost all learning areas.

Music as a creative force in schools cannot be ignored. Its power to develop emotional intelligence and encourage creativity in us all can and should be harnessed by all who have responsibility for educating the young.
