CITY STICKER SALES, MOVING ALONG!

By Marissa Flores Guest Corespondent

On Friday, June 14th, residents from all over, including the 10th ward, purchased over 600 city stickers. 10th Ward Alderman John A. Pope and City Clerk Susana Mendoza were on board and present for this event. This was the inaugural year that Alderman Pope held the sticker sales at the Knights of Columbus, located on 11207 S.

Ewing Avenue. Being the first time that Alderman Pope held sticker sales there, it’s safe to say things ran smoothly. A second sale date is scheduled for Wednesday, July 10th, from 9am -3pm, at the Knights of Columbus. This time next year there will be some changes made to purchasing and renewing the city’s sticker. By June 2014 everyone will be ready to renew their sticker just as they do every year. At that time, motorist will be put on a new renewal schedule. Their new expiration date will be 6 months apart

from their license plate expiration date. Seniors will not be impacted by these changes. During the 2014 renewal period only, motorist will have the option between a prorated/short term sticker versus an extended/convenience sticker. Both vary in prices and expiration dates. For more info, please call the office of Alderman John A. Pope (773) 721-1999 or the Office of the City Clerk at (312) 312-744-6774 or (312) 742-5375.

Rain, Rain, Go Away!

The rains of Spring 2013 have been excessive, record-setting, and annoying! If April showers bring May flowers this year’s rain should bring jungles. With all the rain that we and most of the country have been experiencing this season, I thought it appropriate I provide information on several relevant water related topics. Chicago, Illinois, and most of the Midwest were hit extremely hard by the rains of midApril through early May. During the 24 hour period between April 17th and 18th April 17 we experienced rain waters of biblical proportions. As a result, several Counties in Illinois including Cook were declared disasters by FEMA, the Federal Emergency Management Agency. What this means is that property owners (residential and commercial) and tenants can seek aid for losses or damages from the severe storms and flooding. The disaster assistance is available for losses incurred from April 16th through May 5th. If you experienced any loss or damage you can apply online, by phone, or in person. When applying, you must have several pieces of information including your social security number, insurance, address and zip code, telephone number, and several others. If you have questions or doubts about what is eligible I strongly encourage you to apply. 10th Warders can apply via the following: Phone: 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) TTY: 1-800-462-7585 Web: www.DisasterAssistance.gov Smartphone: m.fema.gov

Besides the rain everyone has seen the significant amount of construction occurring throughout the 10th Ward. In every neighborhood we are investing millions of dollars to improve our infrastructure and overall quality of life. Most notably, new sewer and water mains are being installed which will result in greater reliability, new streets, less flooding, and serve as an economic engine creating numerous jobs. While the large amount of work being done presents a slight inconvenience, I ask that everyone be patient during these neighborhood improvement projects. The end result will be a great benefit to all. Finally, with all the rain watering our lawns has not been a major priority. During these difficult economic times, however, we are all looking to save a few dollars wherever possible. MeterSave is a program offered by the City of Chicago to non-metered homeowners to voluntarily install meters and save money.

“I am happy to announce that this film is among the finest “franchise reboots” of all time...” By Brian Grabinski

Bgrabinski@ontnews.com ‘Man of Steel’ (2013) PG-13 143 min - Action | Adventure | Fantasy - 14 June 2013 (USA) SYNOPSIS: A young itinerant worker is forced to confront his secret extraterrestrial heritage when Earth is invaded by members of his race. REVIEW: I am happy to announce that this film is among the finest “franchise reboots” of all time, in fact, I would consider it a genre unto itself. I have seen the future of blockbuster cinema, and the future is ‘Man of Steel’. Among ‘Man of Steel’s bigger triumphs is its full-on embrace of Superman as science-fiction. While the Big Blue Boy Scout is as instantly recognizable as Abraham Lincoln, Uncle Sam or Ronald McDonald, it’s easy to forget that Superman was merely raised here. His roots are from deep in the stars. What impresses me most about the film is how incredibly, uniformly tight it all feels. David Goyer’s script wisely shows us Kal-El’s childhood as Clark Kent through precise flashbacks. He’s at a point in his life now where his desire to “make this world better than his own” necessitates exposing his powers. In Krypton we see our possible, brutal future. While technologically advanced, it abandoned its space exploration, ruined its own environment and devised a ‘Brave New World’-like system of predetermined social stratification. As such, Zod was bred to defend his people — and Kal-El is the first natural birth in centuries. “Lane as intermediary” is needed because this is a post-9/11 Superman. It’s made plain that our culture is one far more driven by fear than when Richard Donner made his bigscreen version in 1978. While I still admire Christopher Reeve, Henry Cavill does one heck of a great job. The last act of ‘Man of Steel’ is out of

control. Beginning with an image straight from “All-Star Superman” and not letting up until Metropolis is a wasteland of twisted metal, Snyder’s extremely wellchoreographed and clean fight scenes rival the Battle of New York from ‘The Avengers.’ With wonderful inserts resembling comic panels, Snyder jumps from a video game aesthetic to classic ‘High Noon’ Western tropes and back again in quick succession. Like ‘The Dark Knight’, ‘Man of Steel’ is a major step forward in the evolution of blockbuster cinema. I love Superman, and I love ridiculous sci-fi. Snyder’s movie scratched all my fanboy itches. I think this emotion will ring true for other fans as well. At once vaster in scope than any superhero movie yet produced, and as intimately, crushingly emotional as any other entry in the genre, ‘Man of Steel’ lands with the precise, explosive weight of a true historical milestone. and above all else is a masterpiece in its own right. On a scale of 1-10, I give this one a 10!! My 2¢ -B Read more reviews online:

Five bands play for votes at Battle of the Bands semi-finals

By Vanessa Villarreal Vvillarreal@ontnews.com

Music and cheers surrounded St. Simeon Hall & Pavilion Saturday evening as five bands tried to wow the crowd for votes. Five bands – Don’t Be Hayden, 89 Minds, Private Instigators, Steel and Watch the Sky – each played a 30-minute set for Our Neighborhood Times’ Battle of the Bands Semi-Finals on June 15. Starting out the night was an acoustic set by Tic Esquivel followed by the first band to hit the stage, Don’t Be Hayden. “Please give us your vote!” Steve Hayden, lead singer, said as he ended his set with the song, “Faith.” About 50 people sat in the pavilion with beer, food and snow cones. Sitting with the Pena family was their friend, Brittany, from the Southwest Side. This was her first time at the semi finals and she was there to support the band, Steel. Tony Martinez, of the band Static Sound, showed up for a bit to support the local bands. Max Garza, of Playlead, said, “It’s important

for bands to support each other, too.” “Music is important in every community,” Garza said. “So I really try to make it to these types of events. And it’s nice to see friends. Plus Static Sound and Playlead will be on stage at the Southeast Side Summer Fest at the end of the month. So, we hope to see a lot of people there too.” “This is the third year we’re doing this,” said Sam Gomez, general manager of ONT. “So, we can highlight and feature local music. And, today, we’re open to all ages… because children shouldn’t be excluded from live music like this.” Arnold Garza echoed the same thing. He said his daughter, Amaya, was dancing to the music from their house across the street. So they walked over to enjoy the music, weather and some snow cones. “It’s important to show kids some live music,” Garza said. “It’s nice for the neighborhood, too.” At the end of the night, Mix Masters’ DJ Jam Master C and Tim “Spinnin’” Schommer took the floor. Congratulations to the top three bands

of the evening –89 Minds, Steel and Watch the Sky. Each will now move on to the Battle of the Bands finals on June 29 at the 3rd Annual Southeast Side Summer Fest, 3400 E. 118th St. The fest, sponsored by ONT and 10th Ward Alderman John A. Pope, will take

place on Friday, June 28 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.; Saturday, June 29 from noon to 10 p.m.; and Sunday, June 30 from noon to 10 p.m. For band lineups and more information, call (773) 616-1334 or go to www.facebook.com/ontnews.

Don’t Be Hayden ‘just happened’

By Vanessa Villarreal Vvillarreal@ontnews.com

“It was funny how it came together,” Steve Hayden, lead singer of Don’t Be Hayden,” said. “The first time I sang with a band was at an ‘80s prom over two years ago with the song ’99 Red Balloons.’ I was kind of thrown into the band thing. I never saw myself doing it. And I thought it looked like fun.” Don’t Be Hayden formed not too long after that prom. Their first gig was at Vlado’s LocalMotion on the Southeast Side with Chris Garcia was on drums, Mario Zavala on guitar and Matt Ables on bass, they just had two weeks to practice. “It happened like this,” Hayden said. “’We got practice today. We do?’ And it just happened.” Hayden said he never really sang before. So, at practice, he leaned toward the songs that he knew. And he closed his eyes. A lot. “If I didn’t close my eyes, I didn’t remember the words,” he said. “So I wore sunglasses.” He said when he signed up, he thought the band was just going to do one show. Back then, he knew six songs. Now, he knows about 30. “It’s a nice way to go out and be someone else,” Hayden said. “And we always welcome

anyone to come up (on stage) and do a guest song. Or come up and play. It gives everyone an opportunity - just like I had.” Tony Salinas plays bass for the band and has been playing guitar since he was a kid. “I took lessons at a young age,” he said. “Then I was self taught.” His influences were Rush, the Rolling Stones and Led Zeppelin. He also plays the drums and guitar, and is the guitarist for another local group, Static Sound. “I enjoy all three (instruments) equally,” Salinas said. “It’s all fun. It’s good to play music.” The band Life was a big influence on Don’t Be Hayden’s drummer, Chris Garcia. His uncle, George, played drums. Garcia’s played drums for about 16 years now, been a DJ for over 20 years, and is also in the band Pretty Baby. “Hayden’s a performer and a showman,” Garcia said. “So I’m not surprised that we’re in the Battle of the Bands semi-finals. We’re in this to have fun. So I’m looking forward to it.”

Alright, so let’s start with who or what is 89Minds? Alberto Rincon: Great question - well, to me 89Minds started as an idea a couple of friends had to create a band focused on creating concept driven music. Mike Ramirez and I previously played with The Crooks were we got our first taste of the musical creation experience. From then on, the idea grew to incorporate as many fellow neighborhood

STEEL

WATCH THE SKY

By Matthew Bright mbright@ontnewscom

What’s the name of the band and where are you from? Jose: The name is Watch the Sky and we’re all from the Southeast side of Chicago. And who plays what in the band? Jose: I play rhythm guitar and sing back up, Crispin is our lead singer, Octavio Andrade plays drums, Jonas Ruiz plays bass and Sal Campos is our lead guitarist.

A.R.: Well, we’re all over the place. Like I mentioned were a pretty diverse group everyone’s usually off somewhere working, going to school, working on other projects, etc. But when we get together, it’s always a good time. Our current practice spot is my basement (which may soon change to the garage, typical garage rock band) over in the Vet’s Park area otherwise known as Slag Valley. Mike is a bartender at several neighborhood bars, so from time to time we’ll get together and have a band hangout at one of those locations. Alright so name me one band Hangout. Go! A.R.: Crow Bar. Also an old practice spot of ours. You get through this round and on to the finals. 89Minds would be one step closer to the grand prize, not to mention performing at the Southeast Side Summer Fest. What do you think the thoughts would be? Definitely lots of excitement to have made it that far! I’ve only played on a large stage once and it was great, so being able to do it again on the Southeast side would be worthwhile. And of course, by then we’d be even more determined to finish the competition off on a high note.

By Matthew Bright mbright@ontnewscom

Who or what is Steel? What’s your band like? Ed Pena: STEEL is a group of neighborhood people that knows how it is to work hard at everything we do whether it’s at work, practice, or performing. We love classic rock and blues. We are even teaching our kids how to play guitars, bass, drums and piano. Music is universal and we love it when we can help others feel good about things in life through music. Awesome, now do you guys have original songs or do you cover music? How would you describe your direction and sound?

E.P.: We have songs that are ours and we also do covers in our own style. Our direction is we are growing adding additional people for more sound and are beginning to book dates. What was the experience like to win the first round of the Battle of the Bands? E.P.: It was a good feeling to know our practices and effort paid off especially going up against a great band like Teach the Fire. So, if you win the entire battle what do you think the feeling will be? E.P.: It would be big for my band mates and myself. I think because of our hard work we put into our practices and sometimes struggles of our dear band mate Joe Rios who fell to the floor and had a seizure. He left the

band didn’t feel he would be good for but me and Mark wouldn’t have that. He takes his meds and he’s back!!! We added Chuck Anaya on bass Joe is on rhythm guitar. It would be huge! What types of things can we hope to see on June 15th? E.P.: Great rock and roll that’s loud, crisp and clear. Fun entertaining music for all to enjoy. Anything else you would like to tell our readers? E.P.: Whether we win or lose we will be pleased to have made it this far. We will remain a happy family unit.

Fun fact: Crispin, Octavio and I are cousins. And who doesn’t like fun facts? Am I right? What week did you guys win? Jose: Haha for sure. We played the 24th of May and beat Deceived in Numbers and I believe that was the fifth week of the battle Jose: It was our first proper show in over a year and a half. Proper show? What? Do you guys normally perform for badgers? Explain a little bit. Jose: We broke up back in 2010, we played a farewell show in summer 2011 and correct me (Sal and Crispin) if I’m not mistaken, we played an acoustic show winter of 2012. 2011 was our last real full band show. Crispin: You’re right, Jose. We’re basically doing this battle as a reunion and to give our fans a last farewell/reunion. Before our name change and new material Jose: Crispin claims this is the last time we will play songs from our old EP but don’t believe him. Crispin: This really is the last of, Watch the Sky. Jose: We started practicing as a band again late this winter and been practicing ever since writing new material.

So, June 15th what can we expect? Secondly, what if you are responded well too? What if Watch the Sky wins it all? Would you really want to abandon the name after some immediate success, new crowds and a new start? Crispin: Well, we have been announcing a comeback but with a new name and music. So hopefully people stick around. Jose: That is tough. We had a great reception in the first round. I think Crispin said out of all the other weeks we had the most votes. But, I think we all agree that June 15th will be a fun night for all, especially it being an all-ages show. Crispin: People are excited for what’s next. And so are we! And yes all-ages shows are the best. A lot more people come and a lot of our fans are under 21 still. So, how would you describe Watch the Sky? Crispin: Snap. Crackle. Pop-punk!! Jose: When we play I feel we give the most energetic performance. We are fun, we’re fast and we just want everyone to get into it. We don’t just stand still, I know I can’t just stand there and just strum I get into it in hopes the crowd feels it.

Also, I feel we stand out pretty well out of all the bands in this year’s semi’s being the only pop punk band in the competition. Crispin: Definitely! I love our energy! Jose goes nuts! If you get past this round and are set to perform on the main stage at the Southeast Side Summer Fest. What will the vibe be like? Jose: I’ve been to the first Fest and I remember that stage looking amazing. If we do play we will keep the vibe as energetic as possible and get people moving. Crispin: We’ve played big stages before with big national acts so we bring our A game every show. And always get a good response Is there anything else you guys would like to tell our readers? Jose: Come out June 15th, we will be playing songs from our EP “Getting on with our lives.” I am also hoping to include at least one new song and a fun cover to our set for the semis! Crispin: Yea! Also be on the look-out for new material, merch and name!!! Everything new! And still keepin’ it, Pop-Punk! Sal: Thanks to everyone that supported us over the last six years!

Evolving sound, Character Creation maybe that’s your psychedelic fusion. Sounds great! So you are a semi-finalist for ONT’s BOTB2013. What was the experience like? A.R.: It was great, but tough! Our first round battle paired us against good friends of ours: a band I used to be a part of as well as members of The Crooks. Electric Skyline put on a great show and really put the pressure on to perform. We didn’t manage to get as many rehearsals in before the first round as we would’ve liked either - but we prevailed. It was all in fun and playing alongside our neighborhood friends is always a good time. ONT also did a great job of coordinating the whole event to run smoothly. We all greatly appreciate the opportunity to be a part of it. Now you are in the semi-finals what’s your mindset going into the next round? A.R.: Work hard preparing for the show, and when it’s time, play hard. It’s our first time doing anything like this so I’d say we’re really focused on learning as much as we can from the experience, growing as a band, and enjoying the ride. Well everyone will be excited to hear you guys once again. Where do you guys hangout, give me a walk in the day of 89Minds.

friends and artists that shared our passion and vision for concept based creativity. As of now, we’ve assembled a “core” of five musicians: Mike Ramirez, Zanneta Smith, Robert Paz, Eric Rodriguez, and myself. That’s awesome, so what is the sound like? Better still, do you have original music or do you cover music? Give me some projects or songs you have worked on or created. A.R.: The sound is really a work in progress – it’s kind of a living, breathing, evolving genre. We’re a rather diverse group so there’s a fusion of influences happening. Someone recently mentioned “psychedelic hip hop” or “psychedelic fusion” haha. When we first formed, we started with covers like most bands - but, we decided to take a different approach. The covers were selectively chosen to follow a story we had written and a video with visuals that accompanied the music was projected onto the background during our performances. The whole visual aspect to our live shows is still something we are working on. As far as original music go - we are currently finishing up the last few tracks of our very first EP. The EP is based on a character that is part of a grander storyline that will be expanded upon in future releases.

By Anthony Vasquez Avasquez@ontnews.com

In order to better familiarize you with one of the Battle of the Bands finalists, ONT asked the gumshoe rockers a few questions. Keep reading below to get to know the band. You have an interesting band name. Can you explain the origins of that name? KEITH (Bass and Vocals): We wanted something that implied 50s rock n roll and 70s punk. Private eyes are very 50s, but the instigating, the attitude, that’s very Bowery, you know? DOMINICK (Guitar and Back-up Vocals): The name to me means we are going to start something. Being that no one else is really doing what we are doing I felt as though it was a great fit. When and how did the band form? DOMINICK: The band formed last year. The drummer and I were looking for singers and Keith responded to my online add. Soon as we realized he liked The Ramones and Little Richard, he was a great fit. KEITH: Last year, I answered an ad Dominick had posted. He and Jeff already knew each other and had played together but they wanted someone to sing. The ad listed Bo Diddley, Chuck Berry, The Ramones and

The Cramps and it mentioned The Misfits (whom we opened for at House of Blues back in November). [The ad] might as well have said “KEITH!!”

Who are your musical heroes and influences? KEITH: The obvious influences as far as my songwriting are probably Little Richard, The Ramones and The Shanri-Las. I also listen to a lot of classic R&B and Soul, like Specialty Records, Motown, Stax/Volt stuff. I’m crazy about Aerosmith. As a bassist specifically, probably my biggest influences are Jerry Only from the Misfits for tone, particularly the Danzig era; Dee Dee Ramone and Richard Hell for attitude; Carol Kaye for groove; and Mark Sandman from Morphine for all of it put together with a touch of weirdness. JEFF (Drums): Led Zeppelin; John Bonham is a huge influence on my technique. Is this the first time you’ve competed in a battle? KEITH: Me personally? No. But with this band? Yes. DOMINICK: This is the first time we all competed in a battle of the bands. I did that back in high school with other projects though.

Chicago, IL 60617 • 773-933-8663 • 11am - Mon - Sun

If you could open for any band/musician, living or dead, who would you pick?

that people would understand the mix of old school rock n’ roll and punk.

DOMINICK: Chuck Berry by far would be my number one pick. Others would be The Ramones, The Cramps, The Sex Pistols (I heard they are getting back together) Little Richard, Jerry Lee Lewis... pretty much anyone I like that we would fit the bill with. Suicidal Tendencies and Black Flag are favorites of mine too, but I know we simply would not fit the bill. KEITH: have a list: The Ramones, Television, Talking Heads, Richard Hell & The Voidoids, The Dead Boys, Patti Smith, Wayne County, Johnny Thunders & The Heartbreaker. I think I’d want to have CBGB’s during its heyday. Seriously, that scene…Just untouchable! JEFF: John Bonham, Buddy Rich, Matt Greiner

You have only one original song to impress an audience. Which song do you play them? KEITH: “You’re A Creep!” It’s kind of everyone’s favorite, but it’s really short. If we had five minutes, which is [the length of] one song for a lot of bands, I would put “Too Pretty for Prison” right after it. DOMINICK: That’s a hard one. Probably” My Baby Can’t Please Me”. It has such a drive to vocals and standard 12 bar blues

Taylor Girls Soccer Leaves a Mark

By Anthony Vasquez Avasquez@ontnews.com

Despite being relatively new, the Taylor Elementary 5th and 6th grade girls’ soccer team bulldozed their way through the opposition to reach city finals. Coaching the girls is Patrick Flaherty, the school’s librarian. This previous season was only the second one the girls played together as a team, but was a successful one. Led by co-captains Claudia Muniz, Crystal Sotelo and Priscilla Sotelo, the team beat area rival teams from Jane Addams and Marsh. Goalie, Karla Lezama, successfully prevented either team from scoring during both of those games. Taylor was subsequently named Champion team of the Lake Calumet network. It was no doubt in part due to such athletic accomplishment that the community rallied behind the team. Home games often had over 100 attendees present to witness the spectacle. On May 28th, Taylor advanced from the quarter finals by defeating Seward Elementary with a score of 3-0. In the semi-

finals, Taylor continued to dominate, winning against Stevenson Elementary with Priscilla Sotelo scoring an impressive five goals for a final score of 5-0. Sotelo was cheered on by parents, administrators and teachers who all sat in attendance, thrilled by the achievement of their home team. Sotelo would go on to score a goal in the first half of the championship game against north side school, Alcott. Alcott would later be awarded a penalty point minutes before half time. Going into the second half, the two teams were tied and tensions were high. Unfortunately for the girls of Taylor and their fans, Alcott continued to score an additional two points during the second half. Taylor was unable to successfully come back and the game was lost with a final score of 3-1. Taylor was awarded second place and the girls received medals for their achievement. Our Neighborhood Times sends warm congratulations to the girls of Taylor’s 5th/6th grade soccer team and looks forward to seeing them play next season.
