On October 24, 2012, Future Founders Foundation in partnership with Accenture and the CME Group Foundation announced that EPIC Academy would be among the short list of schools chosen to be included in a new student enrichment program. EPIC students will be among the 500-plus students in Chicago participating in the “Connect to the Future” program which is designed to help prepare them for life in college and beyond. “Connect to the Future” allows students to choose a career path, and pairs them with mentors in their chosen field. The program is designed to give students of lower income households access to a fair opportunity in the competitive job market. Students will be allowed to participate in hands-on learning experiences designed to strengthen their skill sets in areas which will serve them in college as well as the workplace.

EPIC Academy Connects to the Future with Future Founders

Continued From Front Page

These include: teamwork/collaboration; presentation skills; technology/ social media literacy; critical thinking abilities; networking; resume writing; and entrepreneurship. Students will be given career action plans based on their preferred employment field. These action plans will outline a path to success for students which will show exactly what qualifications and skills are needed to be considered a viable candidate for employment in their chosen field. This will be Future Founders Foundation’s pilot run of “Connect to the Future.” EPIC Academy was selected because of previous successful partnership with Future Founders Foundation in its other programs. The foundation is paired with schools by non-profit group Communities and Schools Chicago, which has also partnered the foundation with George Washington High School in the past. “Connect to the Future” is the latest in a line of programs designed and implemented by the foundation. On Tuesday, November 27, 2012 the George Washington High School Alumni Association presented a plaque of recognition to Ed Jermuszka of the American Legion Post 388, located in Hegewisch. They also presented to George Tamvakis, who is also the mock trial coach at GWHS. The dedication was in recognition for all their hard work in securing funds and weightlifting equipment for GWHS for use by the students, teachers and coaches. After eight months of hard work with Chicago Public Schools and others, they were finally able to get it up and running over the summer. Employees, students and coaches can use the weight room from 6:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. The American Legion Post 388 also helps kids at the junior and senior level by teaching them and providing information on everything from sports to government and politics. The Post was able to secure

the weightlifting equipment, valued at $20,000, through a health club that was about to close. Now that GWHS has the equipment, they are able to compete with other schools in their conference at the same level. Not only is the equipment used by the football and wrestling teams but, also by the swim and cross country teams as well as regular gym classes. Any GWHS alumnus who wants to be part of the GWHS Alumni Association can go to www.gwashingtonhs.org to sign up. The George Washington High School Boys Bowling Team began its season

on November 7th. After receiving their award for Conference Champions of the Blue South Region, it moved the team into the elite Gold South Conference with bowling powerhouses Whitney Young, Morgan Park, Lindblom and Brooks.

Losing two starters from last year’s team will add to their already difficult schedule. Their first game saw a close loss to Lindblom. This year’s bowling team roster, which is coached by Carlos Cerda (pictured

above far right), includes Captain: Dylan Delagarza, Juniors: Jesse Torres, Victor Salazar and Ramon Salazar, Sophomores:Tory Fenderson and Freshman Michael Garcia.
