On the Road

Ever wished you could just escape to paradise for a while? Well, that’s exactly what I did! I spent four glorious weeks exploring the Hawaiian islands, soaking up the sun, hitting the links, and indulging in some seriously delicious food.
My Hawaiian journey began on the Big Island, where I had the pleasure of staying at the luxurious Four Seasons Hualalai. Talk about living the dream! With its pristine beaches, lush landscapes, and world-class amenities, this resort was the perfect home base for my two-week stay.
You know I couldn’t go to Hawaii without hitting the links a few times, right? And let me tell you, these weren’t just any courses –they were some of the most beautiful spots on the island! Hualalai, the resort’s own course, was a true gem. I even managed to shoot a personal best 84 there – not too shabby, if I do say so myself! And let’s not forget about Mauna Lani South, with its breathtaking ocean views and challenging layout.
But my Big Island adventure wasn’t all about golf. I also had the chance to explore the island’s diverse landscapes and rich culture.
One day, I rented a Jeep and headed to the charming town of Holualoa, where I embarked on an ATV tour through the Aloha Adventure Farms. We learned about the fascinating history of the land, watched a local demonstrate the art of coconut husking, and even got to sample some delicious Hawaiian delicacies.
Another highlight of my Big Island experience was a stargazing trip to the summit of Mauna Kea. As we ascended the mountain, we were treated to panoramic views of the island, culminating in
a breathtaking sunset at over 13,000 feet. And when the stars finally came out, it was like nothing I’d ever seen before. The sheer number and brilliance of the stars were simply awe-inspiring.
Of course, no trip to the Big Island is complete without a visit to Kealakekua Bay, a historic snorkeling spot teeming with marine life. I donned my mask and fins and dove into the crystal-clear waters, where I was greeted by a kaleidoscope of colorful fish, coral reefs, and even a few sea turtles. It was like swimming in an underwater paradise! After two weeks on the Big Island, it was time to hop over to Maui, another island paradise. I checked into the Four Seasons Maui, another stunning resort with all the bells and whistles. And let me tell you, the snorkeling at Molokini Crater was out of this world! I swam alongside sea turtles, spotted small sharks, and even witnessed the boat captain reel in a massive ono (wahoo) on our way back to shore.
Maui also delivered on the golf front. I played the Wailea Gold and Emerald courses, both of which were challenging and rewarding in their own ways. But the real highlight was Kapalua Plantation Course, a bucket-list course for any golf enthusiast. The views were incredible, the course was immaculate, and I even treated myself to one of the most unique and delicious eggs benedict dishes I’ve ever had at the Plantation House Restaurant, the Blackstone Benedict.
No trip to Maui is complete without a visit to Haleakala Volcano, and I was determined to experience it for myself. So, I rented an SUV and braved the winding roads to the summit. The views from the top were breathtaking, but let me tell you, those roads were no joke!
My final week in Hawaii was spent on Oahu, the “Gathering Place.” I stayed at the iconic Halekulani Hotel in Waikiki, a true oceanfront oasis. I spent my days swimming in the turquoise waters, strolling along Waikiki Beach, and capturing the beauty of the island with my camera.
Oahu’s culinary scene was a real treat for my taste buds. I sampled everything from fresh sushi to traditional Hawaiian dishes, and I was blown away by the quality and diversity of the food.
As my Hawaiian adventure came to an end, I couldn’t help but feel grateful for the experiences I had and the memories I made. From the stunning natural beauty to the warm hospitality of the locals, Hawaii truly is a special place. And whether you’re a golfer, a beach bum, or simply a lover of adventure, there’s something for everyone in this island paradise.
So, if you’re looking for a truly unforgettable vacation, look no further than Hawaii. Just be sure to pack your sunscreen, your sense of adventure, and your appetite for aloha!
Mahalo for reading, and until next time, remember to keep exploring and keep dreaming!
“
Big Island, you had me at ‘Poke’ and kept me with your hospitality, volcanoes, and golf. My dream in reality, the beauty, the climates, you stole my heart with your big hug! ”
My affection for the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai began in 2023 and deepened in 2024 with a luxurious two-week return. From my ocean-view room overlooking King’s Pond and the Pacific, the tranquil beauty felt almost surreal. The gentle sounds of nature – birdsong, crashing waves, and the quiet murmur of fellow guests – created an idyllic ambiance at one of the most breathtaking resorts I’ve ever encountered.
A quick 25-minute taxi ride from the airport brought me to this haven of tranquility. The moment you enter the Hualalai Resort, its worldclass status becomes immediately apparent. The impressive entrance frames a postcard-perfect ocean view, a prelude to the exceptional experience that awaits.
Bellmen efficiently handled my luggage as I entered the airy and sophisticated lobby. This quintessential Hawaiian space, with its minimalist yet elegant design, immediately exudes a sense of calm. Snacking on refreshing cayenne-spiced pineapple, I was simply overwhelmed by the beauty of the surroundings.
After a smooth check-in, a golf cart whisked me away to my room. The stunning ocean-view accommodation featured a spacious lanai, ideal for morning breakfasts or relaxing afternoon naps. The room itself was beautifully appointed, with a full bathroom featuring a private toilet, shower, and soaking tub. A convenient entryway offered coat hooks, a key tray, and a closet. The main room showcased a king-size bed with incredibly comfortable bedding, a cozy living area with a couch and coffee table, and a well-stocked mini-bar (honor system), complete with an ice bucket, Klipsch speaker, and a television.
It was, quite simply, one of the finest rooms I’ve ever had the pleasure of experiencing.
Hualalai boasts eight distinct pools, each offering a unique atmosphere: King’s Pond and the Infinity Pool, the Sea Shell Pool, the Beach Tree Pool, the Palm Grove Pool, the Lap Pool, the Ocean Pool, and the Keiki Children’s Pool. Guests are spoiled for choice! The intimate, adults-only Palm Grove Pool, with its private Couples Nests, is perfect for romantic relaxation. The family-friendly Sea Shell Pool offers oversized loungers and stunning sunset views. King’s Pond is your spot for snorkeling and all things marine life. All pools are open from sunrise to sunset, with the exception of King’s Pond (10:00 am to 4:00 pm). Poolside dining further enhances the luxurious experience.
For pampering or exercise, the Hualalai Spa and Fitness Center offers a tranquil escape. The Hualalai Sports Club provides tennis courts for those seeking a more active pursuit. Whatever your mood, Hualalai has you covered.
Beyond its exceptional pools and spa, Hualalai features a championship golf course, the Hualalai Golf Hale, and a nine-acre driving range. This stunning 18-hole, par-72 Jack Nicklaus-designed course offers multiple tees to accommodate all skill levels. Winding through a lush oasis and striking black lava fields, the course culminates at the ocean’s edge, home to the legendary 17th hole.
At 7,100 yards, the course provides a challenging yet rewarding experience, particularly with the strategically placed bunkers. As a 20-handicap golfer, I appreciated the various tee options and the thoughtful design that makes every shot a strategic decision. The seemingly simple 167-yard par-3 12th hole, with its central green bunker, perfectly exemplifies Nicklaus’s design philosophy.
While the green fee exceeds $420, it includes unlimited golf, unlimited range use, and all-inclusive food and beverages (including beer) on the course – a significant value.
Hualalai’s Signature Course proudly hosts the PGA Champions Tour’s season-opening Mitsubishi Electric Championship. Knowing that golf legends like Ernie Els and Bernard Langer have played here adds to the course’s allure.
After a round of golf, guests can indulge in the diverse culinary offerings of the resort’s five restaurants: Beach Tree, ‘Ulu, Miller & Lux Hualalai, Residents’ Beach House, and Noio. Each offers a unique dining experience to please every palate.
Beach Tree: Named for the solitary Heliotrope tree, Beach Tree is a personal favorite. This beachfront restaurant offers an open-air setting reminiscent of a private backyard. Sunset dinners, complete with live music, are a nightly highlight. The menu blends Californian and Italian influences, showcasing a diverse selection of seafood, beef, and pasta. Lunch options range from casual fare like chips and salsa or ceviche to lighter choices such as poke bowls and mahi mahi tacos. The Caesar salad is a reliable classic, and the Lemon Meringue Ice Cream Pie is a must-try dessert.
Dinner at Beach Tree features Italian-inspired dishes. The Manzo Piedmontese beef carpaccio, charred octopus, and burrata are excellent starters. Raw options include Kanpachi Crudo and Ahi Tuna Tartare (a personal favorite). Hearty Italian entrees like Mafalde Bolognese and Spaghetti “Cacio e Pepe” are also available. Entrees range from an 8 oz. filet mignon to a Kurobuta pork chop and the fresh catch of the day. The Tuscan potatoes are a perfect side dish, and the Tiramisu is a delightful dessert.
‘Ulu: For breakfast or ocean-to-table dining, ‘Ulu is the ideal choice. This restaurant emphasizes Hawaiian flavors with pan-Asian influences, sourcing 75% of its ingredients locally. My daily ‘ulu breakfast consisted of their perfect Eggs Benedict, complete with crispy American fries. The vibrant fruit plate is another excellent option.
‘Ulu’s dinner menu includes crudo, tableside poke, sushi rolls, caviar, shellfish, fresh seafood, beef, and chicken. The Tuna Toro Tartare, seasoned with white soy dashi and topped with reserve caviar, is a flavorful starter. The tableside poke, featuring local bigeye ahi, is a memorable main course. Sushi lovers should try the spicy ahi or negihama roll. ‘Ulu also offers a selection of reserve caviar and exceptional Hualalai oysters. The smoked pork belly bao is a delicious appetizer. For seafood lovers, the ahi tuna “Wellington” for two is highly recommended, while the grilled fresh catch is an excellent solo option. The wok-fried black pepper steak and the prime striploin are standout choices from the land menu. Dessert options include the soufflé of the evening or the ‘ōhi’a honey mousse cake.
Miller & Lux Hualalai: For a classic American steakhouse experience, Miller & Lux Hualalai is essential. The Japanese A5 Wagyu is a personal highlight. Other tempting options include the Tomahawk Steak, Cowboy Rib-eye, Hawaiian bigeye tuna nicoise, and French Dover sole. The fresh tarragon béarnaise perfectly complements the beef filet. Add a side of Brussels sprouts and perhaps a seared foie gras accoutrement for added indulgence.
Residents’ Beach House: For a casual meal with stunning ocean views, Residents’ Beach House is the perfect spot. I enjoyed leisurely lunches here, savoring light entrees like the Beach House Burger, Grilled Fish Tacos, and Tombo tuna melt. They also offer pizzas, salads, and starters like chicken flautas and a chilled seafood cocktail. Dinner options include a variety of seafood and salads. The baby romaine wedge salad is a favorite, and the blackened chicken with rigatoni is a satisfying main course. Grill offerings include grilled king salmon misoyaki and a ribeye steak. Dessert options range from classic pies to lighter choices like strawberry shortcake and house-made ice cream.
Noio: This new sushi restaurant above ‘Ulu offers stunning second-floor ocean views. The menu features drinks, omakase, and à la carte dinner options, including rotating nigiri and sashimi selections, mentaiko spaghetti, sake chicken, and hamachi carpaccio. I look forward to trying Noio on my next visit.
The Hualalai Trading Company, located near the resort entrance, offers coffee, sandwiches, ice cream, groceries, gifts, souvenirs, and other convenient items. It also has a gas station for cars and golf carts, an ATM, and a coffee shop.
The Hōkū Amphitheatre, near the spa, hosts various events, including the must-do Luau Dinner. While a scheduling mix-up initially impacted my Luau experience, the captivating show and excellent entertainment shone through. Despite the initial hiccup, the staff graciously accommodated me. Although I ended up at a table for one, I would happily attend again with a confirmed reservation.
For me, convenience is paramount when traveling, and the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai excels in this regard. The concierge service anticipates every need, seamlessly arranging everything from dining reservations and tee times to car rentals and local experiences. These immersive experiences are a major draw for me, allowing me to explore the Big Island beyond the resort. I’ve particularly enjoyed the private Kealakekua Bay snorkel tour, the manta ray night snorkeling adventure, the coffee farm experience, the ATV tour, and the Mauna Kea stargazing excursion.
Golf enthusiasts will appreciate the resort’s extensive golf offerings. The nine-hole on-course lesson is a worthwhile investment, and other options include mini golf school, practice range access, clinics, a golf retreat, and a swing suite experience.
Water activities abound, from private charters and rib craft excursions to guided scooter snorkeling. Tennis lovers can enjoy private lessons or pickleball clinics at the sports club.
Marine life enthusiasts will find the resort’s offerings exceptional. The private junior marine biologist experience and the behind-the-scenes tour of the saltwater systems and fishery are fascinating. For an even deeper dive into the ocean’s wonders, you can hire a marine biologist for guided aquatic adventures.
These are just a glimpse of the countless experiences available on the Big Island, both through the resort and independently. The possibilities are endless. In 2023, I hired a local naturalist for a 12-hour island tour, exploring the diverse landscapes, including the majestic volcanoes.
For those planning events, the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai offers a wide range of venues. The Hualalai Ballroom, at over 6,000 square feet, is ideal for large weddings or conferences, accommodating up to 600 guests for a reception or 390 for a banquet. It can also be divided into two smaller spaces. The Mauna Kea Ballroom is perfect for more intimate gatherings, accommodating up to 75 guests for a reception. The Lo’ihi, Kilauea, and Mauna Loa ballrooms, along with the Hualalai Golf Hale, offer even more options.
Outdoor events are equally well-catered for. The Hōkū Amphitheatre, at 8,100 square feet, can host up to 500 guests. The Garden Lawn offers a lush setting for up to 300 guests. My personal favorite, the Beach Tree Lawn, provides a breathtaking oceanfront backdrop for up to 500 guests. The Sea Shell Pool area is another excellent outdoor option for up to 120 guests.
Whether you’re planning a grand celebration or a small get-together, the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai has the perfect venue to create an unforgettable event. From its luxurious accommodations and diverse dining options to its exceptional activities and impeccable service, the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai offers an unparalleled Hawaiian experience. It’s a place where memories are made, and where the spirit of aloha truly shines.
Maui. Just the name conjures up images of sun-drenched beaches, lush landscapes, and a sense of pure relaxation. That’s exactly what I was craving when I booked a seven-day escape to the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea. Let me tell you, it didn’t disappoint. Well, almost.
The flight was smooth, and before I knew it, I was in a taxi cruising south towards Wailea. Thirty minutes later, I arrived at the Four Seasons. The entrance is impressive – valet parking, a car rental desk, the whole shebang. Stepping into the lobby, I was immediately hit with that Hawaiian vibe: high ceilings, mirrors making the space feel enormous, and a breathtaking floral arrangement. The open-air design, with the lobby bar, concierge desk, and check-in area all blending together, felt so welcoming.
The open-air design flowed seamlessly, with the lively Lobby Lounge to one side and the concierge and registration desks on the other. The Lobby Lounge is a perfect spot to unwind, with drinks available after check-in (4:30 pm to 11:00 pm), food from 5:00 pm to 9:00 pm, and live music from 5:30 pm to 10:30 pm. It’s an ideal place to relax before or after your evening activities. The music is soothing, the food is delicious, and the drinks are superb.
My arrival at the Four Seasons was a little earlier than expected –around 1 pm, a couple of hours before the official 3 pm check-in. I was eager to unwind after my journey and hoped my room might be ready. As I approached the registration desk, the prospect of unpacking and finally relaxing was foremost in my mind.
However, upon entering the room, a wave of slight disappointment washed over me. The beds hadn’t been made. The room itself was spotless, gleaming even, but the unmade beds – a jumble of sheets and blankets – felt like a small intrusion on the otherwise perfect welcome. Having worked in the hotel industry myself, I understood that these things happen. Mistakes occur, and I was completely understanding. I picked up the phone and called housekeeping, figuring I’d grab some lunch while they straightened things up.
Just then, John, my bellman, reappeared. He took one look at the unmade beds and his face registered immediate concern. “No, no, no,” he said, shaking his head slightly, “this won’t do. Let’s get this taken care of immediately.” I tried to assure him it wasn’t a big deal, that I’d already called housekeeping, but he was insistent. His professionalism was evident. He escorted me back down to the front desk, where the manager greeted me with a sincere apology. She explained that the room was indeed not ready, but a housekeeping oversight had occurred. She offered me another room, but I explained that I had specifically chosen this one for its spaciousness – crucial when traveling with another person.
John, ever the professional, quickly suggested a solution. “Why don’t you enjoy lunch on us,” he said, “at our oceanfront restaurant? We’ll personally ensure your room is perfect when you return.” It was a generous offer, and the prospect of dining by the water sounded like the perfect way to begin my trip. Ms. Johnson added, “We truly regret this inconvenience, Mr. Smith. We’ll make sure your lunch is our treat, and we’ll even include a complimentary appetizer.”
So, while the Four Seasons team worked their magic, I enjoyed a truly relaxing lunch at the beautiful oceanfront restaurant. The food was delicious, the view was stunning, and the attentive service made me feel like a valued guest. When I returned to my room later, it was immaculate. The beds were perfectly made, and a small, elegant fruit basket had been placed on the table. I was genuinely impressed with how the Four Seasons team handled the situation. Their proactive approach, genuine concern, and willingness to go above and beyond turned a minor inconvenience into a positive and memorable experience.
My time at the Four Seasons Maui was enriched by a variety of experiences, many of which were effortlessly arranged by the on-site concierge. One of the highlights was a five-hour snorkeling adventure to Molokini Crater. A luxurious catamaran awaited us, complete with a delicious breakfast to ease the transition from the marina to the snorkeling spots. We explored two locations: one just off the beach, perfect for observing sea turtles in their natural habitat, and the other at the breathtaking Molokini Crater, a stunning natural wonder just offshore of Maui.
Some adventures I embarked on independently, the convenience of having a Sixt car rental desk right at the Four Seasons made exploring the island a breeze. With an SUV at my disposal, I ventured east of Paia to Ho’okipa Beach, known for its sea turtles. While a worthwhile stop if you’re already in the area, perhaps not a destination in itself, Ho’okipa is a great addition to a drive along the Hana Highway. Another solo excursion took me to the summit of Haleakala Volcano. The drive, though winding and a bit challenging, was more than worth it. The sheer beauty of the landscape was mesmerizing. Standing at the summit felt like being on top of the world – an incredible, almost spiritual experience. Much like my visit to Mauna Kea, Haleakala did not disappoint.
While I enjoy the freedom of solo exploration, I’ve come to appreciate the added value of group outings. The local insights, stories, and camaraderie shared during these organized experiences often enhance the journey. As a wanderer at heart, I sometimes lose track of time, but group excursions provide a gentle structure and a deeper connection to the destination.
If experiences are not your thing, Wailea is also a golfer’s paradise, boasting three renowned courses near the Four Seasons: the Gold, Emerald, and Blue. During my stay, the concierge seamlessly arranged tee times and club rentals for me to play the Gold and Emerald courses, a true highlight of my trip. While the driving range wasn’t the most impressive I’ve experienced, it served its purpose and still offered beautiful scenery. The Gold Course, in particular, presented a challenging and rewarding experience. Known for its strategic layout and stunning views of the Pacific Ocean, it demanded accuracy off the tee and thoughtful approach shots. The well-maintained greens and fairways added to the overall enjoyment of the round. The Emerald Course also offered a fantastic experience, but the Gold Course’s unique character and memorable holes made it a standout. The courses themselves, in general, were in excellent condition with breathtaking views from many holes.
The 17-Mile Drive: A Scenic Prelude
Before even setting foot on the hallowed fairways, I was captivated by the 17-Mile Drive. This winding road unveiled a panorama of stunning vistas – dramatic cliffs plunging into the Pacific, wind-sculpted cypress trees clinging to the rugged coastline, and opulent estates perched on the hillsides. Every curve revealed a new masterpiece, from the iconic Lone Cypress to the vibrant Bird Rock and the sweeping vista at Cypress Point Lookout. My camera was working overtime!
Pebble Beach Golf Links: Where Legends are Made
Stepping onto the first tee at Pebble Beach, I felt a surge of excitement mixed with a healthy dose of intimidation. The wind whipped off the ocean, but my spirits were high, buoyed by the camaraderie of my playing partners: a friendly couple from Denver, a young college baseball player with a booming drive, and his enthusiastic parents.
My opening shot, alas, was less than spectacular, and my scorecard soon reflected the challenging conditions. But the stunning scenery and the jovial banter
of my group made every stroke worthwhile. The 6th hole, a dramatic dogleg hugging the coastline, was a photographer’s paradise. The par-three 7th, with waves crashing against the rocks below, provided a breathtaking backdrop for my (admittedly errant) tee shot.
Despite the occasional golfing misadventure, the sheer beauty of the course, especially the 10th hole with its panoramic view of Carmel Bay, etched itself into my memory.
Pebble Beach is more than just a golf destination; it’s
an experience, a place where the beauty of nature intertwines with the thrill of the game.
Whether you’re a seasoned golfer, a photography enthusiast, or simply someone who appreciates the finer things in life, Pebble Beach is a must-visit. Just be prepared to pay a premium for the privilege, and don’t forget to pack your camera!
Where the Deer and the Golf Balls Roam
My next golfing conquest was Spyglass Hill, another jewel in the Pebble Beach crown. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr., this course is renowned for its dramatic elevation changes, challenging greens, and abundant wildlife. The course then ventured towards the coast, unveiling breathtaking vistas that rivaled even Pebble Beach. As we journeyed back inland, the landscape transformed into a lush forest, where deer grazed peacefully alongside the fairways. I couldn’t resist capturing these graceful creatures, seemingly unfazed by the errant golf balls whizzing through the air. My playing partners at Spyglass Hill were a delightful mix: a friendly mate from Los Angeles and an older couple visiting family for Thanksgiving. We shared laughter, stories, and the occasional groan of frustration as we navigated the challenging layout.
This coastal gem on the Monterey Peninsula oozes history, beauty, and a sense of hallowed ground. You can practically feel the ghosts of golfing greats as you walk the same paths they once did. Upon arrival, the valet whisked away my clubs and luggage like a seasoned pro, escorting me to the front desk for a seamless check-in. With time to kill before my room was ready, I wandered through the charming shops and then set off to explore the iconic 17-Mile Drive. (A quick shout-out to the complimentary Lexus program – a definite perk considering the room rates!)
My room, located in a newer building at the edge of the property, offered breathtaking views of the 18th green and the vast Pacific Ocean. The spacious balcony was perfect for relaxing with friends, enjoying a cigar (or two), and soaking in the sunset. The room was conveniently attached to a suite, making it an ideal setup for a golf trip with buddies – think 19th hole festivities without ever having to leave your luxurious digs. The king-size bed was a dream, enveloped in the softest sheets and duvet imaginable. And the bathroom? Spacious and well-appointed, with towels that actually did their job – a refreshing change from the usual flimsy hotel offerings.
Now, let’s talk food. The Bench delivered a satisfying experience. I opted for a pizza and a couple of IPAs. The pizza, while a tad greasy, hit the spot, and the beer was top-notch. But the real highlight was the company. The Bench offers community seating around fire pits, and I lucked out by snagging a spot with four delightful locals. The ambience was perfect for dinner and drinks, with the added bonus of overlooking the 18th green and the Pacific – a must-visit for any Pebble Beach guest.
For a taste of history, The Tap Room is an absolute must. With its dark wood, leather chairs, and old-school country club vibe, it felt like stepping back in time to 1919. You could practically sense the energy of all the major winners, celebrities, and everyday folks who have graced its presence. It’s a small space, but grand in history. The burger was delicious, the beer hit the spot, and the overall experience was simply perfect.
Now, here comes the “constructive criticism” portion of our program. Pebble Beach certainly charges a premium, but the hospitality didn’t quite match the price tag. Don’t get me wrong, the staff were all wonderful, but the overall experience lacked that extra touch of personalized service you might expect at a top-tier resort. Perhaps a partnership with the Four Seasons hospitality arm would be the perfect solution? (Just a thought!)
Despite this minor quibble, The Lodge at Pebble Beach remains an iconic destination. It’s a place where history, luxury, and breathtaking scenery collide, offering a truly unforgettable experience.
A stunning sapphire gem nestled in the Sierra Nevada, where the air is crisp, the water is icy, and the views are enough to make you question if you’ve accidentally wandered into a Bob Ross painting
Ah, the Ritz Carlton Lake Tahoe. After battling my way through Truckee like a snowplow on a mission, I finally arrived at this majestic mountain retreat. Now, while the entrance was a bit like a shy wallflower at a party, the welcome was pure Hollywood red carpet. Valet? Check. Bellhop eager to wrestle my luggage? Check. I practically waltzed into the lobby with a grin as wide as the fireplace that could probably roast a whole ox.
Speaking of the lobby, picture a two-story log cabin on steroids, complete with a roaring fire and enough comfy seating to make you want to hibernate for the winter. This “Living Room Lounge” is where the magic happens – drinks, food, and general merriment. It’s also your gateway to the rooms, the mountain concierge (more on that later), and the Backyard BBQ (yes, please!). But first, a glass of champagne at check-in because the Ritz knows how to treat a weary traveler.
Now, my room wasn’t quite ready yet (the suspense!), so I parked myself in the Living Room for some pre-adventure fuel. The cocktails were top-notch, the company was delightful, and the food? Well, let’s just say it was good enough to keep me coming back for more during my four-night stay.
Breakfast at the main restaurant is a bit of a choose-your-ownadventure. Weekends and holidays mean buffet madness, but weekdays offer a proper menu. Being a creature of habit, I patiently waited for Monday to indulge in my travel breakfast soulmate: eggs Benedict. Were they the best I’ve ever had? Not quite, but they certainly weren’t served on a hockey puck either. The Canadian bacon was a tad on the fatty side (a bit like myself after this trip), but cooked to perfection. Hollandaise sauce? Just the right amount of richness, expertly draped over those perfectly poached eggs (runny yolks, thank you very much!). Served alongside a mountain of American fries, it was a breakfast fit for a king (or at least a very hungry traveler).
Dinnertime brought me back to the Living Room each night for great selection of burgers, fries, some hearty chili, and fall-off-thebone short ribs. The burger and ribs were flavor explosions, but the chili, while tasty, was a bit like a shy puppy – needed a bit more spice to really make it bark.
Finally, my room was ready! The bathroom was a spa-lover’s dream – soaking tub, spacious shower, and all the fluffy towels a person could ask for. And the bed? Oh, that king-size bed! It was like sinking into a cloud of marshmallowy goodness, perfectly positioned in front of a fireplace that whispered sweet dreams. With sliding doors leading to a balcony overlooking the backyard, pool, and a glimpse of the majestic mountains, I was in winter wonderland heaven.
Speaking of winter wonderlands, this Ritz is a skier/snowboarder’s paradise. The on-site mountain concierge and True North shop mean you can gear up, grab your lift tickets, and hit the slopes without ever leaving the building. And if you’re craving some village vibes, hop on the gondola and zip down to Northstar for shopping, ice skating, and even more dining options.
But let’s be real, the heart and soul of any great hotel is the staff. And the Ritz Carlton Lake Tahoe has a gem in Danny, the Living Room bartender. This guy isn’t just a mixologist, he’s a magician. He’s got the charm, the energy, and the cocktail-making skills to make you feel like you’re the only person in the room (even when the room is packed). The ladies loved him, and frankly, so did I.
So, there you have it. The Ritz Carlton Lake Tahoe – a luxurious escape with stunning views, top-notch amenities, and a staff that makes you feel like royalty. Just don’t forget to pack your appetite (and maybe some extra spice for the chili).
