It’s summertime and the living is easy! Yes indeed, it is. School’s out and travel plans are made, and now that you're here with us On the Coast, we want to share this year’s Coolest on the Coast fun ideas to make your time here that much more memorable. We're known for our wonderful crystalclear waters and white sand beaches, and there is plenty to experience beyond the beach, too. We are very blessed to receive tourism support to enrich our local economy, but for many of our readers, this area is our home, where we live, work and play. So our Coolest the Coast is for you, too! Who knows, you might discover a new favorite or one you haven't embraced in some time. For me personally, I am making every effort to go boating and enjoy our beaches this summer. As a local, I just don’t seem to get out there as much as you’d think a local would. I want to experience all our area has to offer…take in some of those movie nights under the stars, concerts, luaus, paddles and magical nights. This year I’ve promised myself it will be different after all, and I will take time to make and enjoy a staycation.

Our calendar is packed with events for every day of the week. Our online calendar at www.OntheCoastMag.com has even more events, so be sure to visit our website to get the full scoop. Scroll down to see our Fun in the Sun Videos which we will keep current with host Zoran through AB Productions. PLUS you can keep up daily with our Facebook page at On the Coast Magazine where we post frequently, and you’ll find some of the extra events around the Emerald Coast daily. Now remember, please: we know you're here for the sun and the fun but be mindful of our water’s rip currents. Read the signs, watch and pay attention to the flags. The Gulf has very strong currents even the best swimmer can't handle - you know that saying about don't fool with Mother Nature, well here she is with rip currents. Please take a moment to educate yourself about them so you return home with those fabulous fun memories. Another cautionary note is sunscreen. Yep, you'll need it so don't be shy about lathering it on. You don't want to end up on your second day stuck inside because you forgot or thought you never burn. You will, so do take those precautions! Summertime is all about spending time with family, trying new things and creating memories. We want you to enjoy every bit of our wonderful coast, its venues, restaurants, retail shops and locals. We love having you here on our coast so enjoy, enjoy, enjoy!

Denise reviews articles and restructures them as necessary to make sure the writer’s message shines through. Writers put their passion down on paper, but we run it by Denise first.

Coolest Place to Go Wild Emerald Coast Zoo 5262 Deer Springs Dr Crestview, FL (850) 682-3949 continued from page 9 So, you ask, what makes this zoo so special? Well…it’s the people! Yep. The people. Last year Rick de Ridder (Rick the Reptile Guy) from the A&E TV show “Wild Transport” heard about the Emerald Coast Zoo and how it was in danger of closure by government agencies. He knew that if the zoo closed, many of the animals there would be euthanized, and he just couldn’t just sit back and let that happen. He sold his home and all his belongings and purchased the zoo. How about that for making a difference and taking action! Of course, he couldn’t do this without the blessings of his wife Sara and their three kids David (better known as Tarzan to the locals), Suzy, and Betsy. They purchased a large camper and moved their family of five onto the zoo property, and there they live. We can't think of many families that would even begin to make an idea like this a reality, but that's what this family does. With the de Ridder’s love and passion for the animals they acquired comes a new passion to make the zoo survive. Many locals have rallied around them with a progressive Go Fund Me page to help with the building of the required larger, new enclosures. For the community it brings a new awareness that there is this super cool zoo right here in our backyard that so many never even knew about! The de Ridders have started new programs to bring

awareness such as summer camps, goat yoga and many amazing animal encounters. Rick makes himself available to go to church groups, schools and events to educate, entertain and inform. This non-profit, family-owned and operated zoo is not out of the woods yet. It takes a lot of money to feed the lions and tigers (which zoo workers actually held and played with when they were just little cubs some 15 years ago) and all the other wonderful animals at The Emerald Coast Zoo. With new enclosures still being built, the zoo is asking for assistance as they are truly in need of money to improve it. With everyone’s help, they’ll be able to reap the rewards of seeing these animals live in environments more natural to them and will have continued access to these amazing animals who, for the most part, were all hand-raised at this very zoo. To contribute, please visit the Go Fund Me link at https://www.gofundme.com/manage/p5kmrplease-help-us-help-them Cool Factors: So many hands on encounters; Passionately owned family non-profit; The big cats. 10 • Tell them you saw it in ON THE COAST Magazine

Coolest Way to Get Around Coastal Cruisers 12605 Emerald Coast Pkwy Miramar Beach (850) 543-6146

Pedego Electric Bikes 174 Watercolor Way #106 Santa Rosa Beach (850) 598-6380

Big Daddy Bikes 2217 West 30A Santa Rosa Beach (850) 622-1165

Birds, Limes and Jumps. You can easily pick up these electric scooters in big cities all across the country. Unfortunately (or maybe fortunately as some might think), these scooters are not readily available to us here On the Coast. What IS available, though, are electric bikes! And we are super fans of them. Electric bikes allow you to tour all our coastal towns in a day and get a real feel for each little area unique to our coast. Not only are there so many paths to ride on, but you can also stop at each quaint town and spend time shopping or enjoying the great flavors of the many restaurants and coffee houses that preside along 30A. Electric bikes make it so easy to travel around Sandestin too. Touring along Miramar Beach from the Silver Sands Outlet all the way to the Brooks Bridge makes for a great day now that there are sidewalks and bike paths the whole way. It sure does beat being in a car or in some cases riding manual bikes where the heat just gets to you after a while! Parking is a breeze too. You can pick up electric bikes at many locations On the Coast. We suggest you call ahead and reserve them because carriers have a limited supply! Cool Factors: You don’t have to pedal the whole time, cover a lot of distance, fast, and gets you outdoors and active.

Coolest Place to Summer It Up! Crab Island Choctawhatchee Bay By Destin Bridge

No address on land for this Coolest on the Coast spot! Crab Island is located a little ways out from Harborwalk Village, north of the Destin bridge in the middle of the water bayside. If you’re a visitor to the Emerald Coast, you have probably heard of this unique spot. You might even have already seen it while crossing over the bridge coming into Destin from Okaloosa Island. Thanks to its widespread publicity in all forms of media, Crab Island is a famous landmark, or should we say watermark? Both tourists and locals alike enjoy taking family and friends out to this summertime destination. An underwater sandbar formed after Hurricane Eloise in the 70s, and locals quickly discovered that this is a great place to go. Crab Island got its name from the shape of the island. The sea averages two to four feet deep throughout, and on an average summer day (especially at high tide), it is sparkling and crystal clear. What started off as a nice little spot to dock your boat to swim with marine life up close has now become a hot spot for everyone to gather. Crab Island is only accessible by boat, paddle board, or kayak. You can also take one of the water taxis there. Once there, you can find people galore, food and drinks, inflatable water parks, bands, movies and more. It’s a regular gathering spot for locals but they welcome all. If you’re going as a family, know that the center tends to be more for a party crowd with its bars and bands, while the outskirts tend to be more for families with activities. Head on out to this top destination On the Coast, and get ready for a day full of adventure, fun, and a whole lot of water. Cool Factors: Great place to meet up with your boating friends, inflatable water parks for the kiddos, everything you need to spend the day. continued on page 12

Coolest Things to Build Beach Sand Sculptures Santa Rosa Beach, FL www.beachsandsculptures.com (303) 681-2630 continued from page 15 Have you ever strolled down the beach and noticed a particularly excellent sandcastle? Have you ever wanted to be able to build a colosseum out of sand or construct a castle fit for a king? Well now you can, thanks to sand sculptors Rick and Capri Mungeam. Rick and Capri offer sandcastle lessons from Okaloosa Island all along the beaches to South Walton and scenic highway 30A. They have hired and trained more than 25 sand castle coaches who “create memories in the sand” with families and groups with award-winning sand castle lessons. They believe that sand castle lessons are so much more than learning impressive building techniques; they also give families the opportunity to experience quality time and make memories together, which is priceless. Sand castles also make for a great birthday party or team-building activity. What a unique way to ask your special someone, “Will you marry me?” or “sandvertise” your corporate logo. Sandcastles do wash away eventually, but the memories making and enjoying them last forever. Cool Factors: : Quality family time activity, toes in the sand, unique.

Coolest Ice Cream

Frozen Dune Rolled Ice Cream and Coffee 2052 Scenic Gulf Dr. Unit 103 Miramar Beach, Florida (850) 842-4777 Love ice cream but want to try something new? Head on over to Frozen Dune to try some rolled ice cream and coffee. Rolled ice cream? Yes! Also known as stir-fried ice cream, a mixture of milk, cream and sugar is poured onto an ice-cold metal plate to freeze. Then, your choice of ingredients and toppings - a selection varying from Oreos, strawberries or marshmallows - is mixed in and the ice cream is smoothed flat across the metal plate. Slowly, the ice cream is scraped off in thin spiraling curls and rolls, compiling it all into a cup ready to share. The owner of the Frozen Dune restaurant was first introduced to Thailand’s stir-fried ice cream in New York City. This unique frozen dessert immediately became popular in the northeastern United States in 2015. While living in Destin, the owner missed the delicious ice cream treat, so lucky for us, he decided to bring this delicacy to the Emerald Coast. Frozen Dune will serve something else very unique coming in the Fall. How about your picture in a milk foam drink! All you have to do is order one of the fruity-flavored black teas with milk foam. The staff will then take a photo of you, your kiddo, you pet, whatever, and the printer zaps the picture on the foam! It’s magic! Pretty cool right? This is great place for something new. Located on Old Highway 98 right across from the beach in Miramar, Frozen Dune is the perfect stop after a sunny day of swimming on the coast. All smiles at Frozen Dune. Cool Factors: Rolled Thai ice cream, selfie on your drink, customization of your treat, fun to watch them make your dessert. continued on page 18

Coolest Cooler than Cool – We’re talking Sub Zero! CRYO850 4495 Furling Ln, Destin, FL (850) 279-4145 www.cryo850.com continued from page 16 You won’t find a cooler experience anywhere on the Emerald Coast than CRYO850! And when we say cool, we are talking -154 degrees. That’s over 50 degrees lower than the lowest temperature recorded in the North Pole! Even Santa doesn’t get this cold! So what’s all the fuss about? It’s called Whole Body Cryotherapy. Based on the age-old concept of using extremely cold temperatures to rejuvenate and reset the body (dips in the snow, polar plunges, ice baths), whole body cryotherapy offers the same benefits in a safe and efficient manner. Originally developed in 1972 to treat arthritis, cryotherapy in the United States has evolved from the original nitrogen buckets to the advanced electric, nitrogenfree chambers, and CRYO850 is the only facility in North Florida to offer this state-of-the-art technology! The chamber is affectionately named The Emerald Coast Igloo and was painted by local artist, Joey Canton, to add a little fun to the experience. Selfies required! Why Cryo? When the body’s surface temperature drops by 35-40 degrees, blood leaves the extremities and rushes to the core. The process takes only 2-3 minutes. Afterwards, highly oxygenated blood returns to the extremities and the brain, providing enriched nutrients and enzymes to expedite the body’s natural healing processes. This cellular rejuvenation means a stronger immune system and tighter and more youthful-looking skin. The increased endorphins and adrenaline increase energy, balance mood and mental focus and lead to better sleep (moms of local teenagers say their kids are MUCH nicer after Cryo!). The process also flushes toxins after a workout and serves as a natural anesthesia for pain and inflammation management. What else is there? In addition to Whole Body Cryotherapy, customers can use Localized Cryotherapy for spot treatments, red light therapy, or hang out in the NormaTec Lounge for relaxation and compression therapy. Massage therapists and Active Recovery Coaches are also on staff. For skin care, visit the on-staff aesthetician for an exclusive Pagani Cryo Facial, Skin Rejuvenation or Body Contouring service. Who visits? Some customers visit CRYO850 to manage aches and pains and some to manage mood disorders such as anxiety and depression. Athletes visit to expedite recovery and increase performance. Some customers focus on skin and anti-aging. From ages 9–83, all are focused on better health! Cool Factors: : The subzero experience, multitude of health benefits.

Coolest Newest Way To Get Around 30A Tuk Tuk 30A

What are all those cute little blue and white buggies you’ve been seeing on 30A, you ask? They’re called Tuk Tuks and we welcome TukTuk30a to our coast - 30A’s latest transportation addition. Like the electric bikes we have featured in this issue, Tuk Tuks are also electric, providing a green footprint. We like that! This also means they are super quiet so all your passengers can converse while experiencing this ride. Tuk Tuks hold six passengers plus the Tuk driver. They’re a quick, fun and easy way to get to beaches and restaurants along the coastal communities. You might be asking yourself, “How do I catch a ride on a Tuk Tuk for my family or group?” It’s simple and happens to be much like getting an Uber or a Lyft. Just download the Tuk Tuk 30A app (don’t you just love technology). It’s that easy! Currently Tuk Tuks operate between Grayton Beach and Eastern Lake but they have plans to expand. We’re just happy to see another transportation option here On the Coast! Cool Factors: : We love that they are electric and quiet, Tuk Tuks hold up to 6 passengers, cool new look for transportation along the coast. continued on page 20

Coolest Specialty Meat Market Hebert’s Specialty Meats 872 Hwy 98 E. Destin, FL (850) 460-8885

Market Shops of Sandestin, FL (850) 460-8885

continued from page 18

Looking for true Cajun favorites to serve in your own home? Hebert’s Specialty Meats is your go-to place here On the Coast! With two locations to serve you, it’s convenient to both Destin and Sandestin visitors and locals! Owned and operated by true Cajun, Walter Hidalgo along with partners Sean and Kelli Louvierre, Hebert’s opened the first Emerald Coast location in June 2018. After knowing Sammy Hebert, the original founder of Hebert’s Specialty Meats, for 35 years, Hidalgo decided to bring his own part of the company to the Emerald Coast. Coolest Beekeeper on the Coast Aubee’s Honey in the Raw 107 Hughes St., Fort Walton Beach, FL 32548 (850) 243-0095 (850) 830-3535

Meet Aubrey Leigh Beck. This rising 10th grader who will be attending Choctawhatchee High School this fall is a true lover of bees. At the age of 12, Aubrey met one of her grandfather’s friends who was a beekeeper, and she was fascinated. She loved watching them work away, minding their queen and making honey. Her father, Bobby, a local contractor, helped Aubrey get started with an initial investment of purchasing her first brood of bees. That’s about a thousand of them! After that, Bobby made it clear, it was up to her to do the work. We all know bees sting, and most of us would turn and run. This never has fazed Audrey, as it’s just part of her job. All her friends think she’s a bit crazy! But Aubrey takes her love of bees seriously, knowing that bees are life-giving, and that if we didn’t have bees in our world, we would all perish. Currently on the family farm in Holt where she keeps her bees, Aubrey has eight hives and thousands and thousands of bees. She is often called out to help remove swarms of bees in the county, and she relocates them back to the family farm. She’s reached them from sheds, trees, and soffits, where her father steps in to help. Aubrey sells her honey locally to many restaurants and businesses. Her business is called AuBee’s Honey in the Raw. She’s never without honey, so give her a “buzz” if you need some. Cool Factors: Young, female beekeeper, relocates swarms of bees to the family farm, has her own thriving business. continued on page 22 20 • Tell them you saw it in ON THE COAST Magazine

Coolest Step Back in Time Suds-N-Cinema 174 Highway 98 SE Fort Walton Beach, FL. 32548 (850) 226-SUDS (7837) continued from page 22 What do you get from some buddies that want to bring back an old landmark that meant so much to them when they were in high school? You get Suds-N-Cinema! Suds-N-Cinema is the only locally-owned and operated theater on the Emerald Coast. It is the latest incarnation of a theater business in a building that was originally constructed in 1940. The theater, built and owned by John Tringas, was one of the first buildings on what was then called Main Street in downtown Fort Walton. For decades, the Tringas family operated the Tringas Theater, and it was the only place around to take in a movie. But, over time, new theaters came to the area. Multiple screens, larger concessions selections, and more modern technology meant that the theater needed to revise its business model in order to stay around. Through the years the business has been known by several names: Suds-N-Cinema, Cinema Plus, Downtown Cinema Plus, and even a brief stint as Apples Disco. Each of these businesses put their own slant on the movie/pizza/beer theme, but none made significant changes that really set them apart from their predecessors. That is changing at this very moment as those old high school friends are preparing to open the doors to Suds-N-Cinema. As a team, they converted the building into one that has a combination of Art Deco and Soda Fountain motif. The facility is more comfortable, the aesthetics more enjoyable, there are more food options, and the theater can once again show multiple movies each week. Cool Factors: A step back in time, oldest theater on the Emerald Coast. Tell them you saw it in ON THE COAST Magazine • 25

ats and Dolphin’s aren’t something you commonly see together, but in this case, when it’s the Mosley Dolphins Highschool Swim and Dive Team and a Cat 5 Hurricane, you readjust your thinking. It’s fair to say that the Dolphin’s not only adapted to the situation, but crushed it. It was not an easy lane to swim to be sure. Not only did our team lose their pool at A. Crawford Mosley Highschool, but a good many of them lost their homes as well. To add insult to injury, they were midway through their swim season when Hurricane Michael hit. It could have very easily been the end to the Dolphin’s ability to continue competing, and under the circumstances, understandable, but the record breaking Hurricane didn’t break the spirit of the this team. Words cannot fully express how overwhelming it was in those first days to wake up each morning, surrounded by debris, and literally not recognize our own streets, neighborhoods, or homes. That first week was a low point for all of us. Families here were reeling from the destruction around them and even more intimidating, was the big question, “What do we do next?” In the Dolphin’s case, what 26 • Tell them you saw it in ON THE COAST Magazine

on

they did next was get right back in the pool! The kids began driving hours away to hop into any pool that would have them! The first 3 weeks consisted of 4 hour round trip drives each day to swim at Destin, until Frank Brown could begin hosting them closer to home, which was still an hour or more trip from the recovery traffic. We are so very grateful to Coastal Aquatics in Destin for opening their gates to us! The first day was extremely emotional for the kids when they began arriving at the pool. They were ecstatic to see each other finally. Without electricity or much communication, it was the first time they were able to learn that everyone was okay and more importantly, have a touch or normalcy brought back into their lives. Once the team began steady practices, it became clear to the them, that as a group, they could overcome anything. The swimmers along with their coach, Steve Burdeshaw became determined to not only finish the season but give their all to absolutely dominate it in true Mosley Dolphins fashion--42 years of Championship titles under their caps, a feat that no other sport or team in the area can lay claim to. We’re talking 42 County wins, Over 15 District titles, 7 Regionals and State runner up twice.

All of their perseverance paid off in the end. The Mosley Dolphins proudly secured their place in the State Championships for 2018. We couldn’t be more excited about the Mosley Swim Team and the amazing season they pulled off in spite of the adversity each swimmer experienced from the storm. Not to brag, but with their past history, it really shouldn’t have surprised anyone. We can proudly say Mosley Highschool has produced many great swimmers over the years. We’ve had numerous swimmers recruited each year, (five of them just this past season!) and an Olympic trials swimmer, Michael Duderstadt. Those types of stats speak volumes about the drive the swim team has had for years, and Hurricane Michael was just a rogue wave in the water for these resilient kids.

The swim team is now preparing for the 2019 season. Yes, they are back in their own pool, but the struggles of recovery are still very stark when you walk onto the deck. We Lost all of our shades and have a temporary canopy set up for the coaches and kids bags. They are practicing with what can best be described as Frankenstein lane lines, made up of recovered parts, and pool noodles. Most importantly, we have a lot of swim gear to replace. In spite of all of this, the kids keep showing up with a smile on their face and work their fins off. They average five hours a day in practices; one in the morning as the sun comes up and one in the afternoon. Between practices, most of these swimmers, are life guarding or teaching swim lessons with their year round team, PCST.

WHAT IS

We live in an area that is stretched thin at this point, constantly giving to those in need and helping teams, organizations, and families recover. We’ve found ourselves in a situation where a lot of our normal sponsors just can’t help this year and we’re doing our best to make up for it with fundraisers throughout town and applying for help with organizations outside the area, but many of them are already committed elsewhere due to the dire situation we just went through. We are determined to provide the type of season these kids deserve and are leaving no stone unturned at this point. If you would like to help the Mosely Swim and Dive Team with their recovery efforts, we have several options. You can donate to our gofundme at, https://www.gofundme.com/1ocqfnecyo , or our paypal option sent to Mosleyswimdive@gmail.com If you would like to contribute by check you can contact us through the email address above associated with our paypal account and we will get in contact with you. by Laura Lucy Summer is here and parents everywhere live in fear of hearing the two most dreaded words in the English language: “I’m bored.” My daughter, Vivi, has 73 days between the last day of first grade and the start of the new school year. That doesn’t sound like much time to fill…until you break it down to 105,120 minutes of free time. If you’re lucky, there’s a weeklong family vacation in there to break up the monotony. A day camp here, vacation bible school there. That still leaves you with 95,000 minutes. The temptation is certainly there to schedule every moment for your children to keep them physically active, mentally stimulated, and perhaps most importantly, out of your hair. However, there is a growing movement advocating for a blank calendar. Ask any grandparent and they will quickly tell you that their parents did not view their entertainment as a requirement of being a good parent. Instead, with a twinkle in their eyes they will tell you stories of summers spent making mud pies, catching caterpillars, and building forts. If your parents grew up in south Georgia like my mom, you might even hear about the strange practice of strawing June bugs. Don’t ask. If you don’t believe the old timers, maybe listen to some of the great creative minds on the subject of boredom. Famed writer Dorothy Parker said, “The cure for boredom is curiosity. There is no cure for curiosity.” Philosopher and author Robert Pirsig of Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance fame wrote, “Boredom always precedes a period of great creativity.” And Nobel laureate Bertrand Russell said, “A generation that cannot endure boredom will be a generation of little men, of men unduly divorced from the slow process of nature, of men in whom every vital impulse slowly withers as though they were cut flowers in a vase.” I know, pretty heady stuff when you’re just trying to get your kids to leave you alone long enough to do a load of laundry and pay the bills. But you have to admit they have a point. If your child doesn’t learn now how to be alone continued on page 46

Who do you say I am?”

…A reflection on relationships. Everyone has people. People they call family. People they call friends. People they call coworkers. People they just know by name or reputation. People they think they know from social media. People they wish they didn’t know. People. We are everywhere and hopefully belong in someone’s circle of people, right? We are all on this earth and in this country and on this beautiful coast together. Like it or not? So how do we as a people relate? How do we get along? How do we decide who our people are or aren’t? I recognize that not everyone on the Emerald Coast follows the Christian faith, but stay with me for a moment. I recently read a passage that reflected the essence of our answer regarding people and humanity and how we live among and around each other, and I’d like to share it with you. Matthew 16:13-17 says this from the Message Bible: “13 When Jesus arrived in the villages of Caesarea Philippi, he asked his disciples, “What are people saying about who the Son of Man is?” 14 They replied, “Some think he is John the Baptizer, some say Elijah, some Jeremiah or one of the other prophets.” 15 He pressed them, “And how about you? Who do you say I am?”

16 Simon Peter said, “You’re the Christ, the Messiah, the Son of the living God.” 17-18 Jesus came back, “God bless you, Simon, son of Jonah! You didn’t get that answer out of books or from teachers. My Father in heaven, God himself, let you in on this secret of who I really am. And now I’m going to tell you who you are, really are. You are Peter, a rock. This is the rock on which I will put together my church, a church so expansive with energy that not even the gates of hell will be able to keep it out.” These men to whom He asks this question have been by His side day and night, especially Peter. But yet Jesus asks them who OTHER people say that He is first. I thought this was odd. Where was He going with that? He asks about people that don’t really know Him but yet have an opinion or a thought. He asks about people that have not spent as much time with Him and, of course, their answers vary. None of which were correct, except…Simon Peters. So what am I saying? I believe this revelation was a knowing Simon Peter had about who Jesus REALLY was. Something inside of him just knew. He knew because of the time he invested to get to know…because of his relationship and proximity of closeness he had with Him and this revelation was a result of this intimacy. A knowing based on time spent. Further, Jesus proceeds to tell Simon Peter that He is NOW going to tell him who he, Simon …REALLY is. WOW! And now what do we do with this? continued on page 46

FUELING OUR BODIES FOR SUMMER by Paul Hunter

S

ummer along the coast finds us with our seasonably hottest weather of the year with the greatest amount of visitors to enjoy our beautiful area. A long time ago, I subscribed to renaming our seasons, The Snow Bird Season, Spring Break Season, Summer Season and the Fall/ Family/ Convention Season based on those visiting us. With each season, comes a different flow and daily schedule whether it be changes to our family schedule, work schedule, and for those driving, the commute probably takes a little longer. As we get out of our groove and “normalized” daily habits, we may lose focus and our planned eating goes awry. While some have forgotten our New Year’s resolutions, others have remained dedicated to their plight for the beach body. For those that fell off the wagon, let’s focus on getting on track and reestablishing routines that will affect us positively before the end of summer. Fortunately, we can start over right now! After 30 years in the fitness industry and reviewing nutritional/ “diet” books, I have not found a book or doctor or registered dietician or other expert in the nutritional field to support adding sugars, processed food, frying, eating once a day, or drinking excessive amount of alcohol. All of the listed items have a way of slowing our bodies down, filling it with things that make it more difficult to process the essential items and fueling disease. If your nutritional day consists of these items, read on! Since the beginning of reading those books however, there has been a common thread: Fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meats and some complex carbohydrates (ones that your body has to break 32 • Tell them you saw it in ON THE COAST Magazine

down in order to be utilized.) These items have a way of fueling our bodies with what they need for more energy, mental focus, strength and endurance. Who doesn’t want that? Here is a little experiment: Write down what you eat for a week. yes, a week. This way you capture weekdays and weekends. Wait, you say… My friends and family are coming in town and we are going to go all out. I say, fantastic, let’s see what that looks like. If this is the worst you are going to eat all year, then let's take a look. Lots of people wander off the nutritional path at times like these. Hopefully we can find out what else you are eating. Once you know what is going in, you can make decisions to keep it the same or change it and then you will know what to change. A simple way to improve what goes is is to simply add to what you are already eating. Yes, I said, “add.” Add at least half your body weight in ounces of water each day. If you weight 128lbs, then your goal can be to drink at least a half gallon of water. With dehydration being a big thing in the heat and causing a large portion of people’s fatigue ensuring a proper hydration level is key. Another thing to add is a big salad with minimal trimmings, ie: cheese, croutons, creamy dressings. If you want to add something for the top, add some tuna, ground turkey, chicken or lean beef for some protein. Often, we are looking for the quick, easy fix to our lives because we are on the go. With a little planning, these small changes can get you started on a healthier track or shifted back towards the way you used to eat.

MOM, I'M BORED! continued from page 28 with his or her thoughts and feelings, what happens years from now when they leave the nest as young adults? Learning to be alone and to work things out for themselves is an important step in their development into fully grown, functional humans. Imagine what your relationship would be like if your spouse or partner constantly looked to you for entertainment. Yikes! Psychologists have been studying boredom for decades, and there is a growing body of work that agrees with the grandparents and great minds. Boredom is good for kids. A Canadian study in the 1980s revealed that children in a town without television showed greater creativity than children who watched television regularly. I would love to see a similar study today with our exponential increase in available screens and time spent starting at them. A more recent study out of Texas A&M University endorses letting children be bored. Psychologists Shane Bench and Heather Lench concluded, “[Boredom} serves to encourage people to seek new goals and experiences. Boredom provides a valuable adaptive function by signaling it is time to pursue a new goal… we propose that boredom will motivate the pursuit of new goals as the intensity of the current experience fades.” In other words, kids who are given the wonderful opportunity to be bored will find a way to fill their time on their own. Some of the benefits of boredom are increased creativity, developing problem solving skills, becoming comfortable with being alone, exploring varied interests, and making new friends, possibly even with their siblings!

REFLECTION ON RELATIONSHIPS continued from page 30

First, I can totally relate. How often have I summed up a person and formed an opinion not even really knowing them? How often have I had people tell me that they thought one negative way about me before they got to KNOW me and then realized I wasn’t that way at all. We have all done it. All guilty! But truthfully, we ALL want to be known. Not in a stardom way but just in a way that you have people that just get you… understand you, spend time with you and KNOW you. Yes… the good and the bad. But because they know both sides… your experiences, joys, failures…they love you all the same but aren’t afraid to rejoice with you or speak truth to you. How often do we reciprocate this? I mean really invest in someone before rendering an opinion of WHO they are. Too often, quick judgment calls are made that surmise a person by one face-to-face meeting or from one social media post. We assume, presume, sum up and label before we KNOW them. What if we weren’t so quick to form an opinion and just left the ballot circle empty? What if we tried to believe the best or at least try to understand? What if we decided to just simply not judge, good or bad unless we really invested time in knowing? What if we simply just focused on knowing…and if we can’t know, if time or distance doesn’t allow, then we let it go. Let them go, all the labels I mean. I know that sounds like a fairytale 46 • Tell them you saw it in ON THE COAST Magazine

I need to wrap this up now because I have to pick Vivi up from music camp and drop her off at a golf lesson then go shopping for new shoes for next week’s dance camp. If y’all see us at Big Kahuna’s, be sure to come over and say hi. We’ll be there approximately 2,036 minutes this summer.

and not real world but just think about it. How often do we let other people sway our opinion about another? It may not even be direct persuasion. It could be comments on someone’s post that cause us to sum up who a person is or isn’t. Or it may be the media trying to fulfill political agendas that we buy in to. It could be a friend that tells us a story about someone that we really don’t even know but it sounds just awful and bam!!! Opinion formed, bias in place. And I think this is what we can learn and the point of this passage. That to truly KNOW someone and be able to establish identifying who they REALLY ARE, comes with a commitment. It comes with the commitment of investing time. Time spent getting to know why they are the way they are. Time spent understanding why they say what they say or act the way they act. Time spent. Experiences, life, circumstances shape us each in very different ways…ways that another could not pretend to understand without this time spent. Believe me, I realize this is not an easy endeavor to begin to apply in day to day life but after reading that passage, I aspire to be that person. I want to be that person who is more understanding. I want to be that person who tarries in forming an opinion and that person who is quicker to let labels go. I want to be that better version of me. I want to be better equipped and open… open to new encounters, new friends, new people that I might have the privilege to get to actually KNOW. How about you? We are all here together. Let’s make room for kindness in the KNOWING!
