You’d think the fall would mean fewer things to do On the Coast, but, I must say, there is not a week where there aren’t some really great events. I remember when our Fall Festival at Destin Commons was practically the only event in the area, but that’s just not so anymore! Our area has really grown and so have all our activities. Halloween alone has almost a whole page in our event calendar this issue. Farmers markets are everywhere, and there are a number of amazing fundraisers for great causes. Event after event on the horizon! This is OUR season to enjoy OUR coast. The water is still warm, fish are biting, and festivals and concerts are all here for us to enjoy. Fall season = Local season. My favorite indeed. With so much to do, please make sure you take the time to smell the roses and enjoy the process. I find myself starting to realize the need to take a step back from the hustle and bustle and prioritize what life has in front of me before it all goes by in a blink of an eye. I feel gratification from being a wife and mom and truly enjoy watching my two children grow up to be adults. What they have accomplished is beyond my wildest expectations, and I am so proud of them. I am joyful…. joyful with who I am and where I’ve been and excited about where this journey in life will take me next. Life is what you make it, but don’t get so wrapped up in its fast pace that you miss the important parts. Savor the season and the moments. May this magazine inspire you to live mindful with a positive perspective, humble with a heart of gladness, radiant with excitement for each day, and grateful for the moments you get to treasure with family and friends here On the Coast.

ll across our beautiful coast, pencils are being sharpened, papers are coming home to be signed, buses are chugging and lunchables are flying off the shelf. It’s that time again. Schools are open and moms rejoice! Or do we? More than ever, I realize that Father Time waits for no one! Hence, the conundrum. You see, as parents, especially moms, we love the fact that summer is over and there is routine again. We love that there is a bit of free time to run errands or read a book, get to work on time, clean and organize, maybe have lunch with a friend or go to the gym… I’ll stop there. You get the point. But as this “light of day” begins to shine on mothers everywhere, there are others who, despite liking structure again, are facing big changes and are having a slightly different reaction or two. Maybe sadness and a sense of loss as she sends her baby off to the first day of kindergarten. Or anxiousness and uneasiness with clenched fists watching her tiny 6th grader go in to face the big kids of middle school. And of course the ace of all… the no-longer-senior that she just left behind on a college campus with one eye on the road and the other in the rear view mirror hoping for that last glance or two…that’s when it gets real! But despite this plethora of emotions floating around, the one constant is the heart of a mom. It doesn’t change. It may get less anxious when it’s the 2nd or 3rd but still, it doesn’t change. She’s the one who waits on the edge of the pool with one toe in the water ready to jump in, even after you have learned to swim. She’s the one who is so happy you are dating someone who seems like a “good kid” but is slightly jealous they are taking so

much of your time. By the way, she will also be the one to help pick up the pieces of your broken heart. She’s the same one who is so thrilled you passed your driver’s test but every single morning as you leave, she hugs you and says “be careful”…like she would ever say, “Why don’t you just drive reckless today! Go wild and have fun!” Somehow there is a simple peace that comforts her to just say it. She’s the one who even though you are 17 years old and a senior and can make your own breakfast, still gets up at 5:30 to do it for you, just for a few special moments together. She’s the same one who fusses when you wear her favorite shirt but ends up giving it to you anyway. She is still the one who blows up balloons at the crack of dawn to float along your ceiling so that when you wake up, your birthday is as colorful and beautiful as you! The mom’s heart! And it occurred to me, having a senior this year as well as a tiny 6th grader, that there is a long, sad growing list of “no mores.” No more paper plate ornaments or painted CDs to add to the Christmas tree. No more Blue Corn Festivals or book fairs, no more musicals to watch, no more field days... Recently a friend of mine posted a first-day-of-school photo of her son who is now a senior. She had it side by side with a photo from his first day of kindergarten. I couldn’t help but smile when I saw the oversized laminated car pinned to his shirt. I remembered that of my own except we had the big bus. It made me sad also, because it made the “no more” list. I will no longer have another kindergartner to pin a bus on. My heart broke as I thought about the moms who know well how long that list will get, as she just became an empty nester or maybe continued on page 12

AND JUST LIKE THAT ... continued from page 10 just sent her firstborn off to college. Either way, it stings the heart. She is not thinking about routine and structure right now but rather wishing she still had a little one to pick up at the bus stop or a teenager to argue with about what he believes are his personal rights now that he is a big senior. She wishes her daughter were there to steal her favorite shirt. I heard one friend say about her oldest that she will miss hearing the sounds of his routine. From her bedroom below, she could hear his footsteps across the ceiling…the water running, the brushing of teeth, the toilet flushing…the sound that he is home. The thought of her sadness and void that she feels is unmistakably a rite of passage for both, but regardless, even though he will be back, he is no longer simply upstairs nor will he be home for dinner on weeknights. And then there are the moms who just sent off her last, the baby. Somehow, getting up at the crack of dawn to scramble an egg for your hubby doesn’t have the same sweet pleasure. Quietness. Too quiet! Gone are the days of dirty clothes and shoes left on the floor and dishes in the sink…another “no more” addition. Oh, and the pantry stays full now. She wishes it weren’t. The moms that still have a full house dream of those quiet moments… while others would give anything to have the noise back. Yet another friend she said this: “It is painful but brings beautiful growth for them and for us. You will find yourself stepping into their empty room just to ‘feel’ them. But each stage brings its own joy.” I write all of this to say, as much as we get frustrated with them, need time to ourselves, get tired of a dirty house with empty chip bags everywhere or even feel like we as moms have lost ourselves…it happens that fast! They are born and they are gone and on their own. For some reason, I can think back on holidays or events that were years ago and remember the smells, the conversations, what I wore, what they wore, what we ate…just like it was yesterday. But ask me what I had for breakfast this morning and I will struggle. I think it’s because we long to file away and desperately remember details that grip our heart because we know how fleeting these moments are and will soon be added to the ever-growing list of “no more.” Our babies are here one day and they are gone the next. So… as much as I would love to say I have an answer or a point to all of this, I really don’t…other than be present, seize every moment, recognize in the rough patches that these ARE seasons that will be gone all too quickly and embrace each stage. I’ve already broken the news to my senior that I am riding shotgun with him this year and to hang on for the ride! I only meant that I wanted to take in every minute of his last school year but I think he is worried that I might make him take me as his date to Homecoming. I’m going to let him sweat that one out for a bit. But I want to remember it all ...each of his eventful or even non-eventful moments as a senior because I know that even though it’s only the beginning of the school year, May will be here before you know it, a diploma will be handed to him, and off he’ll go… just like that!

o, what happened? When did it go away? You used to play, didn’t you? Really, when did it stop? As adults we are quickly led to the world of responsibilities, chores and non-thinking routines. That sounds like a blast, doesn’t it? If you were told you could play no longer if you wanted to be an adult, kids, in their right mind, would think that is absolute nonsense. I have this quote as part of the screen background on my computer: “The greatest gift you can give your kids is to be fully alive yourself.” ~Rob Bell Can you imagine? Fully alive? What does it look like for you? Do you still dream? When is the last time you did not think about your daily routine or a customer? Play is essential to so many things in our life, yet it is so easily lost. The benefits of play are endless and can roll over into areas of our daily routine to take away the mundane and add some zest, make us more attractive. Play can: IMPROVE OUR RELATIONSHIPS AND CONNECTION TO OTHERS: Sharing laughter and fun can build empathy, compassion, trust, and intimacy with others. Play doesn’t have to be a specific activity; it can also be a state of mind. Developing a playful nature can help us loosen up in stressful situations, break the ice with strangers, make new friends, and form new business relationships. STIMULATE THE MIND AND BOOST CREATIVITY: Young children often learn best when they are playing— and that principle applies to adults, as well. We

14 • Tell them you saw it in ON THE COAST Magazine

learn new tasks better when it’s fun and we are in a relaxed and playful mood. Play can also stimulate our imagination, helping us adapt and problem solve. IMPROVE BRAIN FUNCTION (WHO DOESN’T NEED THIS?): Playing chess, completing puzzles, or pursuing other fun activities that challenge the brain can help prevent memory problems and improve brain function. The social interaction of playing with family and friends can also help ward off stress and depression. RELIEVE STRESS: Play is fun and can trigger the release of endorphins, the body's natural feel-good chemicals. Endorphins promote an overall sense of well-being and can even temporarily relieve pain. KEEP YOU FEELING YOUNG AND ENERGETIC: In the words of George Bernard Shaw, “We don’t stop playing because we grow old; we grow old because we stop playing.” Playing can boost energy and vitality and even improve resistance to disease, helping you feel your best. continued on page 16

PLAY

continued from page 14

BE HELPFUL IN HEALING EMOTIONAL WOUNDS: As adults, when we play together, we are engaging in exactly the same patterns of behavior that positively shape the brains of children. These same playful behaviors that predict emotional health in children can also lead to positive changes in adults. If an emotionallyinsecure individual plays with a secure partner, for example, it can help replace negative beliefs and behaviors with positive assumptions and actions. TEACH COOPERATION WITH OTHERS: Play is a powerful stimulant for positive socialization. Through play, children learn how to "play nicely" with others—to work together, follow mutually-agreedupon rules, and socialize in groups. As adults, we can continue to use play to break down barriers and improve our relationships with others.

With all of these benefits, we need to remember to balance our days and lives, recognizing the importance of play and how it can fully integrate with our daily responsibilities, duties and commitments and be the catalyst towards making us more effective adults. MAKE IT A GREAT DAY!

all is here! While all the other moms are going on about pumpkin spice everything and finally getting to wear boots, I’m over here pondering Halloween costume ideas. My six-year-old daughter Vivi expects something epic for every occasion. For a girl who has found a reason to wear her dance recital costume in public at least once a month since the performance in May, a Halloween costume has to be a little bit extra. Last year, my mother-in-law was visiting from New York and let Vivi talk her into buying a Rey (Star Wars) costume from the Disney Store. But in years past, we’d gone a little craftier. We are fortunate to have my mom close by, and she is a whiz at whipping up any costume her only grandchild desires. When Vivi was 4, she wanted to be Peppa Pig. My mom sewed a red dress for her, and we added ears, a tail, pink makeup and a snout made from a fabriccovered Gatorade cap. The year before that, we went as the Scooby Doo gang. My little redhead was the perfect Daphne, while my husband Patrick and I had to work a little harder to be Velma and Shaggy. I have blonde hair and he has no hair, so we relied on cheap wigs and thrift store clothes to pull off the transformation. Two-year-old Vivi wanted to be Elsa like every other girl. I like to think the combination of

18 • Tell them you saw it in ON THE COAST Magazine

her red hair with a blonde braid made her unique. When she was just one and a half, I was in charge of all the costume decisionmaking and dressed her as her own superhero – Ginger Snap! Back in the day, Halloween was a one-day event. We donned costumes, went door-to-door collecting candy, returned home and ate it. The End. Now Halloween is a month-long extravaganza of festivals, trunk-or-treats, crafting and elaborate decorations. And we are all in.

2012

The Emerald Coast has tons of Halloween and fall-themed family events, many of which you can find listed in the calendar section of this issue. We live in Destin, so some of our favorites are BooLu’s at Lulu’s, Fall Fest at Destin Community Center, Halloween Haunt at Destin Commons and the Destin Elementary School Fall Festival. During this week, Vivi has more costume changes than a Beyonce concert. Best of all, these events are all free or super affordable for a family on a budget. For little kids, the action-packed week leading up to Halloween can feel like a trip to Disney World!

Another place we love to go in October is the Halloween store. Spirit usually has a pop-up shop in Fort Walton Beach/ Mary Esther and another in Miramar Beach. It’s like going to a haunted house without having to wait in line or pay admission. continued on page 20

HAPPY HAUNTING

continued from page 18

Their creepy animatronic characters can keep Vivi entertained for close to an hour. Fair warning though, if your kid is even the tiniest bit jumpy about characters DO NOT ENTER! There is no way to get to the cute kid costumes without encountering some seriously frightening stuff. As I write this, we are in final deliberations over this year’s costume. Some options still on the table are a pilot, Wonder Woman, Jojo Siwa (she of the giant bows) or a granny. I am certain we will run through a few more ideas before we come to an agreement. It remains to be seen if Vivi will rope us into a family costume.

2013

Best of luck to all you parents as you run the Halloween marathon that the month of October has become. Happy haunting!

2014

2015 Wondering what to do with all the candy your little goblins collected at the 20 fall festivals you attended? Here are some ideas! •

Send It to the Troops

Check out organizations like Solders’ Angels, Operation Shoebox and Operation Gratitude. Both organizations collect your unwanted candy and send it to our military around the world for a sweet treat.

Candy Buy Back

Be on the lookout for local dentists offering to collect your candy and stave off cavities. Many will offer kids toothbrushes, floss or other trinkets as incentive.

Give to Other Kids

There are some kids who were not able to go trick-or-treating. Check in with the Ronald McDonald House or other local charities that serve kids to see if they can use it.

Save Some

There’s nothing wrong with having a secret mommy stash of candy. You earned it, girl!

Denim and Bling

It’s something you hope never happens to anyone you know or love. It’s a topic many people find daunting to discuss, yet it still must be addressed. It’s terrifying, tragic and heartbreaking. We’re talking-about suicide. In a recently televised NBC special on suicide, the Center for Disease Control’s fact sheet for June 2018 was quoted, stating that there were nearly 45,000 lives lost to suicide in 2016 alone in the US, and that it rose more than 30% in half of the states. It also stated that more than half who died did not have a known mental health condition. Our local area has witnessed this morbidity with at least seven in the last few months. Everyone has a role to play in preventing suicide. The mission of Emerald Coast Suicide Prevention is “to mitigate depression and prevent suicide in youth through education, mentoring, emotional support and the promotion of hope and compassion.” This local nonprofit is undergoing an endeavor to mitigate depression and suicide by raising funds to help those needing treatment that relieves or cures depression. A fundraiser will be held Oct 21 from 4 to 8 pm in Destin at Bric-A-Brac, a popular restaurant and nightclub on Holiday Isle. The theme is “Denim and Bling,” so grab your sparkly headband and jeans and come dance to some classic rock by the cover band Catalyst and enjoy food catered by Brotulas. Tickets will be sold at the door for $25. RSVP via email at ecsuicideprevention@icloud.com or at the Event on the Emerald Coast Suicide Prevention Inc. Facebook page. If you would like to meet with ECSP to learn of their purpose and mission statement and become a sponsor or volunteer, please email ecsuicideprevention@icloud.com. Together, we can rekindle the hope that has been lost for all who still suffer.
