Like a fine wine or an expertly-aged scotch, good things become better over time. After nearly two decades traveling along the pathway of parenting, I think I have gotten better with age. I’ve evolved, experimented, taken risks, learned from mistakes, but most importantly, I have had a relentless pursuit and zeal for my children to be my best for them. The driving force behind this magazine was my first-born child, my Skylar Capri. My family and I had just relocated from San Diego, California to here, On The Coast of the beautiful emerald waters of Destin, Florida. I was personally frustrated by the lack of information regarding things to do and family-orientated activities. Sure, our beaches draw visitors from all over the world, but the community, the locals, are what bring people back again and again and remain the heartbeat of this region. For the sake of my parenting and the well-being of my children in our desire to connect to others, this magazine was birthed. When I started this magazine, it didn’t occur to me that the driving force behind it would be graduating someday. I’m sure all the younger parents reading this have heard the same things I did as a newer parent: “Enjoy it while it lasts” . . . “It goes by in a blink” . . . “You will miss it when it’s over.” At the time, I humored those more seasoned parents, thinking to myself, I’ve got this. My journey will be different. Yet, here I am. No amount of great parenting can stop those little ones from growing older day by day. And yes, you blink, and they are graduating high school! All too soon I will be an empty nester watching the newer, younger parents, thinking and saying those same words to myself and out loud!

My sweet Skylar Capri. I can’t help but be proud of her in every way. In every step along this path, the honest, gracious, loving person she is today is due to all the steps she took growing up, little by little, day by day. This magazine, like my parenting, has evolved over the years. Along with my baby girl, we have grown up. We took some risks, tried new things, learned from our mistakes and believe that in every issue we put forth our very best. Dear Readers, I humbly ask that you indulge my nostalgia and bittersweet realization that my precious babies are no longer such. They are ever-changing, beautiful, creative beings that need to be cherished. This page, this issue, is a reflection of my inspiration and motivation, my passion, growth and maturity, my pursuit of my very best self - my heart outside my body, my first born, my daughter. Leah Campbell, author and popular blogger at Mom.me wrote, “I want my daughter to overcome challenges on her own. I want her to embrace her beauty and her intelligence. Most importantly, I want her to be strong and steadfast.” That is my prayer for my beloved Skylar, as well as all of you dear readers! Be strong and steadfast, embrace your own beauty and intelligence, overcome your challenges, and most of all, for you younger, newer parents, enjoy every moment, no matter how crazy and challenging, because it really, honestly, truly goes by in just the blink of an eye!

I

have been working in the fitness industry for 27 years now and a few years ago was interviewed by a person who was instructed to get some questions answered from a “seasoned” trainer. There were some obvious questions such as, “Why did you get involved in the fitness industry?” and “Do you feel a college degree made a difference?” One question stuck out, however, and my answer could have gone in a few different directions: “What is your favorite type of client to work with?” Without hesitation, I replied, “The one who is willing.” I shocked myself with what I thought was such a simple answer. Over the years, I have pondered my answer and thought,

8 • Tell them you saw it in ON THE COAST Magazine

although the answer is simple, whether the person is or is not willing may not be that simple. People come to me and other trainers because they want to make a change. One thing I have grown to accept is that whether it be in the fitness realm or looking into other parts of life, change is not easy for everyone.

WHY? What are great questions to ask of someone requesting change? A conversation can go like this: Trainer: So, what brought you in here today? Client: I want to get healthy. continued on page 10

WHAT'S YOUR WHY? continued from page 8

Trainer: Why do you want to get healthy? Client: I have gained some unwanted pounds over the years and I want to feel better.

be difficult to think about, but if you’re missing out on goals you had set in the past, think about it. Was your “Why?” big enough?

Trainer: This may be a silly question, but why do you want to feel better? Client: Well, my daughter is coming into town this summer with my grandson and I want to be able to get on the floor and play with him.

Below are some questions you can ask yourself when you are ready to make some changes in your life. Remember, you are not a tree, you do not have to stay where you are.

Trainer: Ah, now we are getting somewhere. Getting to the “Why?” as it relates to motivation and change is significant because it can bring along with it the willingness to change. In the above example, it became not just about being healthy but having a relationship that became important. The ease of mobility that coincides with getting stronger, becoming more cardiovascularly fit and losing some weight now seems a little more important and creates a willingness to work through things when they become uncomfortable, because they will at times. I have seen it written that life begins outside your comfort zone. If you think about it, your comfort zone got you to where you are now. You stopped doing certain things because they might have been too difficult to sustain on your own. That alone can

1. What is your goal? 2. Why is that goal important? (You may have to ask yourself this a few times to uncover the real “Why?”) 3. What will getting out of your comfort zone look like? 4. Are you willing to listen and gain wisdom to grow? 5. What habits will you need to change? 6. Are you willing to be consistent? 7. Are you willing to be consistent long enough to allow your work to have the effect that you choose? This becomes a good exercise to do with an accountability partner, whether it be your spouse, a friend or even your family. There is nothing like going through something challenging when you have a strong support system behind you and encouraging you. Make it a Great Day!

TOUGH SCHOOL YEAR? by Carol Garner-Houston

A

lex was diagnosed with ADHD. He refused to do his homework, had poor grades and didn’t pay attention in school. Because he had a difficult time organizing his thoughts, he wasn’t able to speak and write clearly. He was awkward and avoided eye contact. His days were filled with tantrums and moody moments. Friends were scarce.

After Alex was at Brain Harmony for only a short period, Alex’s teacher said, “Keep doing whatever you are doing! He has good behavior and is a hard worker!” His mother reported that he was able to transition without tantrums and that he made great eye contact with a smiling and engaging demeanor. And not only that, but take a look at his grades:

Then, the summer before his 4th grade year, Alex was taken to Brain Harmony. Through standardized testing, Lead Therapist Elizabeth “Betsy” Printz, OTR/L, obtained a baseline of skills for Alex. She drafted a treatment plan that included exposing him to the iLs Focus System-Sensory Motor Program along with neurologically organizing activities. Integrated Listening Systems (iLs) has a suite of modalities that Brain Harmony consistently uses in the focus of care. It is a natural, medication-free tool for improving brain function and is used by all ages and skill levels in some of the top clinics in the world. The iLs Focus System effectively "re-trains" parts of the brain involved in learning, communication and movement. Combining an auditory program with specific visual and balance activities, the iLs Focus Systems strengthens neural pathways and improves the ability to learn and process information.

The Discovery Education Assessment tracks a student’s progress in reading and math at the beginning of the year and at the end of the year, allowing for comparison over time for Alex as well as comparison to peers at his school and throughout the entire school district. Alex started the year below the district and the school’s averages in reading, but at the end of the year, his scores were above the district and school’s averages! The target achievement level for this assessment ranged from 1523-1628, which placed Alex below target achievement at the start of the year. By the end of the year, Alex scored in the upper end of the targeted achievement range, placing him above his peers. Alex saw similar results in math. The target achievement level for this assessment ranged from 1512-1698, which placed him below the target achievement at the start of the year. The

DUCK and

RUN!

Have You Ever? by Crystal Tingle

I

kind of think I already know the answer to this and for one reason only. We have ALL done it! So let me just say that this is meant to be one of those stories that as you read through it, you will blush and giggle at the same time because you were able to answer yes to the question. I will be the first one to admit it. Yes! I have been in that moment where I have pulled the “Duck and Run”…that moment when you see someone you know and do your very best to avoid speaking to them. But hang on before any of you get offended and feel like you were on the receiving end of that, especially if I know you…let me explain. Recently, I found MYSELF the victim of a “Duck and Run!” I know! Can you believe it? Yes, I was the one whom they ran from! Now, I don’t think that typically you are supposed to be aware that the “duck” happened to you, especially if the “runner” is an experienced one, but regardless, I noticed. It’s okay to laugh! My first reaction was to get tickled because #1, they got busted and # 2, because I have done this very thing to someone else. My second reaction after thinking about it was confusion. “Why me? I am a nice person. Why did they try to avoid me?” And then my third was internalization. “If they did it to me and I do it also, why do we do it?” So I started my own little low-scale investigative journalism project. I asked a few random friends if they had ever participated in such anti-social behavior and, to my humor, almost 100% were guilty as charged! It was actually quite funny listening to everyone’s reasons so I thought this would be a fun, to-be-taken-lightly look at some of our human frailties that lead us to do ridiculous things such as this as if no one notices. It is this journey through life that makes us all the same in our very different ways.

So here is the fun part. How is the “Duck and Run” pulled off? Gathering from several people including myself, here are a few methods! For our purposes, the setting is a grocery store and to add a bit of humor I have assigned names to each category.

THE REWIND

The most obvious way is to turn or back out and hit another aisle. This has to be done quickly and with precision with no jerky movements as to not draw attention to the retraction. Stay cool and smooth as if planned.

THE PHONE-A-FRIEND

If you are too late and already down the aisle and feel that a jerky Rewind would be noticed, quickly grab your phone and pretend like you are talking with someone. Just hope that you have your phone on silent as you pass them by, offering a courtesy wave and smile, and it doesn’t start ringing in your ear.

THE PARADE WAVE

If you are a fair distance from them but you were spotted, and you are in a place where you have a fair area to roam like the produce section and not right past them, smile, step up your pace, keep walking and give a friendly across-the-store wave and a courtesy yelp like “Hey there!” but keep on walking.

THE ANALYZER

They haven’t seen you but you can’t pull off the Rewind, so quickly throw your attention on a product that may have caught your eye, pick it up and stay distracted and apparently very interested in the nutritional facts until they pass.

The DUCK and RUN!

THE

continued from page 16

The Traveler

You saw them early enough so you quickly head to the opposite side of the store and begin your shopping in reverse, but take care that you carefully navigate the aisles, cautiously sneak, peeking around the corners, before committing to turn because at some point you will more than likely collide if not careful. These are funny! And these are just a few of the top ones that I have heard and quite frankly used myself. And it makes it even more comical as you picture yourself in some of these situations! But the truth is, we are all guilty and do things sometimes that might not seem like the most considerate or kindest thing to do to someone, but I have often said that there is a always a why behind the what of the who. There is a reason and history behind each of our actions and often, as the aware recipient, we are so quick to get offended or take things personally when it may not be personal at all. I think more often than not when I evaluate the different reasons why I have avoided people it was NOT because I didn’t like them or want to speak to them. I am a very social person and love to talk. More times than not, my attempts to elude were based on what I was dealing with on that particular day and it had nothing to do with them. Could it be that others do it for the same reasons? Could it be that they were having a very busy day and had only a short amount of time left to accomplish things before getting home to fix dinner or pick up kids and were just trying to stay on task? Or maybe they just weren’t in the best mood! Maybe the morning started off rough…a disagreement with one of the teenagers or hubby, a phone call from a family member that set a bad tone for the day. Maybe in that moment they just needed to get out and get things done and just weren’t feeling very personable from the morning events that were weighing on them. Is it possible that they were just not feeling good? Maybe they were just under the weather and coming down with something. Or another scenario could be that you knew something personal that they were going through and they just weren’t ready to answer questions about it or even discuss it yet. There are 18 • Tell them you saw it in ON THE COAST Magazine

so many reasons why we each set boundaries and distance so we can have our personal space, and sometimes the “Duck and Run” is all we know to do. This is certainly meant to be light-hearted but also to shed light on our imperfections and humanity. Our nation has gotten to the point that we are so quickly offended and less likely to forgive and extend grace which is sad because we often forget our own imperfections in those moments when we are really all very much the same whether we admit it or not. Recently, I watched a movie that is now in my top 10 favorites of all time! The movie was Same Kind of Different as Me and is based on a true story. It is about a man who was a very wealthy international art dealer, his wife who served at a homeless shelter and another man named Denver Moore, a very bitter, angry homeless man who many years ago was a slave. The three develop a very unlikely lifetime friendship and at the end of the movie, Denver says one of the most profound endearing statements that I will never forget. I won’t say why he delivers this message in case you want to watch the movie but regardless, he says this: “I found out everybody’s different – the same kind of different as me. We’re all just regular folks walkin down the road God done set in front of us. The truth about it is, whether we is rich or poor or something in between, this earth ain’t no final restin’ place. So in a way, we is all homeless – just workin our way toward home.” – Denver Moore So you see, we really are all the same kind of different. We are all just trying to figure it out and move through the best we can. Though we are wonderfully made, we are still amazingly human. So as we blush, giggle, duck and run, or see it happen, let’s also try to remember that we are on this crazy journey together and with that comes time constraints, personal problems, mood swings and just life…busy, crazy beautiful life! Life that we should see, even in the craziest of moments, as the same kind of different as you…and me! So just laugh, grin and extend…grace to all!

How I Spend My

as a Local in Paradise by Laura Lucy

T

o quote Charles Dickens, “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…” No, I’m not talking about two European cities during the French Revolution. I’m talking about the long, hot summer that stretches before us when the kids are out of school.

by Lauren Kelly

What could be better than hours of daylight filled with trips to the beach, pool and park and no alarm clocks? What could be worse than a bored, whiny kid pestering you to entertain them even though you still have to complete all the work and chores that you had when they were in school?

I don’t like to schedule too much in the summer because it really is our only go-with-the-flow season. Swim lessons are important because of where we live and how much time we spend around water. Vivi already swims like a fish, or a mermaid as she prefers to say, but she can always get stronger and learn technique. We opt for the eight-week program at Emerald Coast Scuba. It’s just one hour each week and keeps safety and good swimming top of mind throughout the summer. continued on page 22

In May, Vivi, my one and only child, will turn 6 and will complete kindergarten. This has been an amazing school year filled with so many cool firsts. My big girl rode the bus to and from school, learned to read like a champ and came home telling me about everything from perspective in art to the Wampanoag tribe. I’m pretty sure when I was in kindergarten our days were spent watching Captain Kangaroo and trying to keep the boys from wasting all the paste by painting it on their hands and then peeling it off. By the way, whatever happened to paste? But I digress - back to summer. Even though we locals like to grumble about our town being overrun by tourists, the fact is it’s pretty great to live in a vacation destination. If you can’t afford or don’t have the time off for a getaway this summer, there are hundreds of fun options right here in our backyard. Many of them are highlighted in this issue. The Emerald Coast offers everything from museums and state parks to waterparks and escape rooms. If you’re bored, dig in and get connected! 20 • Tell them you saw it in ON THE COAST Magazine

SUMMER VACATION continued on page 20

We are also staying connected to our church this summer. Vivi is very excited to begin a new music program, Grace Notes, with the Grace Lutheran Minister of Worship, Lydia Landes. I have yet to see a child meet Lydia and not immediately fall in love with her. In Grace Notes, she will combine singing, art, movement, bible stories and playing fun instruments like xylophones, metallophones and boomwhackers. We’ll also attend and help out with Vacation Bible School in July. I have friends who send their kids to a different VBS every week throughout the summer. Unlike other camps and activities that can be pricey, most churches charge between zero and $10 for a week of VBS. It’s a great option for those weeks when mommy needs to catch up on laundry or just relax in solitude for a few hours. Vivi’s top priority every summer is Big Kahuna’s Water and Adventure Park. She would go every day if I would take her. My brave girl will ride everything they allow her to. I thought she was going to kneecap a lifeguard who wouldn’t let her on the Kowabunga Racer last year. But within a few weeks she had grown that glorious half inch that allowed her to live her dream. I, on the other hand, missed out on that particular slide thanks to a sore shoulder and a healthy sense of self-preservation. I might be in the mom minority, but I actually enjoy taking my kid to the waterpark. It probably helps that I only have one to keep track of. Also, I would’ve given anything when I was a kid to have season passes to a waterpark. Do you realize how rare that opportunity is? Having said that, I am now 42 and that first slide of the day is always a shock to the system. I figure I have only one or two more summers before Vivi will be embarrassed to be seen with me, so I’ll keep slipping and sliding as long as I can. My husband takes over when it’s time for more rugged outdoor fun. He takes Vivi to hike the trails at Topsail Hill State Park or kick the soccer ball at Morgan Sports Center. They will even spend a few nights camping out in a tent in the backyard. This is the perfect time for mommy to pop open the Prosecco and catch up on the last six months of DVR. Even though fun is our number one focus during the summer, we can’t let our brains and hearts completely turn to mush. Since Vivi is in elementary school now, I am feeling more pressure to keep the learning going this summer. We have been regulars at the Destin Library for years, and they will see plenty of us this summer. We check out simple books for Vivi to read to us and chapter books for us to read to her. There’s story time with Mr. Will for younger kids, a cool game that helps kids learn how to code and even art exhibits. Outside you will find grounds beautifully maintained by the Destin Garden Club. This is a great spot for lazing in the grass with a book or hiding and finding painted rocks. We always try to find some time to give back to the community too. One of Vivi’s favorites is our weekly visit to Destin Health and Rehabilitation Center. Our church does a service there for the patients, and you would be surprised how much a smile and a high five from a cute kid can brighten someone’s day.

Even if you think your kids are too young to actively volunteer somewhere, take them with you to drop off donations at a charity. Little kids can understand that giving is good. Make it a habit early and it won’t be long before they are looking for opportunities to help and to give. Use this issue as your guide to summer fun. There are dozens of activities found in this magazine that will guarantee a special summer for your kids. Think back to your childhood and what made summer great. Eat ice cream before dinner. Forget about bedtime. Shoes are optional. In the immortal words of another great writer, Alice Cooper, “School’s out for summer!” Vivi and I will see you on the slides!

So when the idea of a GARDEN popped into my head a few years ago, I (naturally) started researching things like “garden layout,” “gardening in Florida,” and “Florida garden pests.” We brought in gravel, built four raised boxes, raided the Home Depot and Lowe’s garden sections, and got to planting.

when their children, Payton and Finleigh, were toddlers. Their list of items is extensive and includes cucumbers, tomatoes, bell peppers, squash, watermelon, strawberries, corn, herbs (basil, thyme, rosemary, parsley), hot peppers, kale, broccoli, sweet potatoes, carrots, and blueberries. Finleigh (8) and Payton (5) also enjoy planting and eating the food, especially the bell peppers and strawberries, lettuce, and blueberries.

It started off perfectly – the eggplant, peppers, corn, green beans, tomatoes, and basil grew quickly and I enjoyed being outside after a long day at the office. But in the end, our yield from the first year was less than ideal. I definitely learned a few lessons about pests, soil, watering, and gardens in general. However, the kids loved it. My daughter, Annabelle (5), particularly liked watering the garden every day and planting the marigolds. So this year, I decided to consult with a couple of local women, Crissie Anderson and Sherry Currow, for their gardening tips and tricks.

Eli and Noah surveying their garden Sherry and her family have gardened for more than seven years. She and her husband, Scott, also had gardens as children and longed for a delicious BLT made with homegrown tomatoes. They enjoy educating the kids on the entire gardening process from preparing the soil, to picking the seeds and plants Finleigh, eating a fresh green pepper. out, to helping plant them, and finally, harvesting. Noah (7) and Eli (5) enjoy looking at the seeds and figuring out what they want to plant as well as harvesting the food from the garden. Sherry and Scott started gardening at their home in South Walton and have continued in Destin, growing tomatoes, cucumbers, bell peppers, blackberries, corn, carrots, strawberries, blueberries, potatoes, watermelon and cantaloupe. Sherry believes that gardening is a learning experience for her and the children. continued on page 28

them. Some plants or flowers, such as marigolds, are beneficial to gardens and will deter insects, attract bees, and act as a companion plant for other vegetables.

“At the end of the day, for us, it is about having patience and having fun,” she explains. “The kids learn so much that no matter what, we work it together as a family and all watch it grow, and ultimately, when things don't work out...there's always a grocery store around the corner!” So what are 5 of their tips for a successful garden? Read on to get inspired! Tip #1: Find the Right Location. Look for an area that has a good amount of sun but also a little shade to relieve the plants on those super hot days. In my first year of gardening, our bell peppers experienced sunscald (sun damage to the outer skin due to overexposure) due to lack of shade and trees. Also consider your garden placement - too close to a wooded area may attract critters looking to snag a few berries or a ripe tomato. Tip #2: Good Soil. There are a number of ways to layer the soil and fertilizer; the trick is finding the right method for your garden. This is based on a number of factors, including whether you’re using raised beds or gardening in your soil. Sherry noted that the soil in her garden in South Walton became richer and heartier with each year of planting, but the first year of gardening in Destin was challenging due to the sandy soil. Both Crissie and Sherry suggest purchasing a composter to fertilize your garden with coffee grounds, egg shells, and other food scraps (but not meat!). Tip #3: Garden Organization. If you’re a first-time gardener, research the symbiotic relationships of plants and where to plant

Eli and Noah surveying their garden.

Tip #5: Ask the Experts. If you have questions about pest control or plants, look to your local nursery, Home Depot, or Lowe’s employees. Also consider joining a local gardening club on Facebook such as the Niceville, FL Garden Club, the Destin Garden Club, Gardening in Northwest Florida, or Walton Country Master Gardeners.

Tip #4: Pest Control. Unfortunately, pests can put a damper on any gardener, whether seasoned or newbie. Garden pests come in the form of insects, worms, birds, turtles, rabbits, squirrels, lizards, and larger animals such as deer. Fortunately, there are a number of ways to combat them including pesticides, natural pesticides, wire netting, and garden organization. Sherry suggests planting onions or putting eggshells in the soil. Crissie also recommends researching natural pesticides, which are easy to make at home.

9TH ANNUAL LITTLE BLACK DRESS PARTY! There is no doubt that a little black dress never goes out of style and is always something to celebrate. The 9th annual event is a great reason to slip into yours and support a worthy cause. Don’t let the name fool you; the event is a favorite among both men and women. This year the much-anticipated will be a Hollywood Black Tie Affair! On May 1 , the Baytowne Sandestin Magnolia Ballroom will be transformed for a night of classic Hollywood glamour. The event will feature dinner, dancing, live and silent auctions, games and live performances. All proceeds will support White-Wilson Community Foundation community health initiatives. The nonprofit works to raise awareness about the importance of preventive care and increase access to life-saving health services. “The Little Black Dress Party is a way that we can increase access to health care for locals in need and have fun doing it,” said 2018 Honorary Chair Ewa Ruyan. “The event is having a great impact on lives in our community, and we have an wonderful night planned.” Through the success of the event, the White-Wilson Community Foundation has forged partnerships with other local nonprofits to maximize its impact and better serve our community’s health needs. Funds raised work to ensure that no one has to go without essential health services such as breast cancer screenings, vision equipment, mental health care, annual screenings and emergency care for victims of sexual assault. The event is made possible through the support of community partners who sponsor the event and the event’s volunteer committee. The committee dedicates countless hours to ensure that each year’s event is a night to remember and this year will be no exception. Tickets for the Little Black Dress Party, A Hollywood Black Tie Affair are currently on sale. Tables for 10 are $900 and individual tickets are $100.
