talkers who prey on women because they are deemed soft targets and those who pile abuse on them will now have to think again before pouncing on them. A group of about 50 women attended a Stay Safe Women’s Road Show, sponsored by a retail giant, which equipped them with self defence skills, at Noluthando School for the Deaf, in Khayelitsha, last Saturday. The defence classed armed the women with the tools to defend themselves, encouraged them to speak out about their abuse and gave them the confidence they so desperately need. Sanette Smit, chief instructor for Shoprite

Stay Safe Women’s Road Show, said this road show was informed by the high rate of rapes, violence against women and robberies in the country. “We need to equip women with safety tips and we need them to be able to defend themselves when they are attacked. They seem very excited and keen to learn the tips. We target the areas where we know most women are likely to be exposed to such ills(Abuse and physical attacks),” Smit said. Smit herself is an 8th Dan Karateka, and shared the sessions with six other qualified trainers. After the brutal murder of Anene Booysen some years ago, it was decided that had she been physically fit and trained in self-de-

fence, she would not have suffered her fate in the manner she did. More than two years ago, Booysen, who was found raped, mutilated and left for dead, shocked many people around the globe.. Constable Thembakazi Jacobs, spokesperson for police at Khayelitsha police station, said the workshop was good for equipping women with the defence skills and safety tips. “Females are mostly seen as soft targets by thugs, mostly on their way to and from work. It is good for them to know the skills and tips,” Jacobs said. Jacobs also said they will ensure that those who attended the road show will transfer their skills to others in their areas.

Warm winter wear for learners ZILA MKONTO Such was the happy lot at Nolungile Primary School that joy was written all over their faces as each of their names was called to the front to receive a pair shoes. Members of the New Community Baptist Church form the US came bearing gifts. to about 542 disadvantaged earners from the school, based in Site C. The learners braved the scorching heat on Sunday to welcome the entourage and receive gifts from them. Reverend Peter Hu, who is based in Site C, said the shoes were collected in the US after fellow congregants saw the need during a recent visit to South Africa. “We do our missionary work around Site C, and we have a mutual relationship with this, so it was that when our brothers and sisters visited the school, they identified a need,” said Rev Peter. Touched by the plight of these children they collected the 542 pairs of shoes and

socks. Vuyiswa Somagaca, a teacher, said they welcomed the gift with open heart. “We are very happy that these congregants came because these children come from struggling families and this is well appreciated,” said Vuyiswa. Inako Mgquba, was one of the recipients; he smiled widely as he fitted the shoes. “Mommy will be very happy to see me come home with new shoes,” said Inako. Lisa Nongawuza was also pleased with the gifts and thanked the reverend for bringing them. After the hand over learners entertained the guests with a variety of musical items, much to their delight. Reverend Peter also thanked the schools for “being friends of the church”. Another teacher Zukile Nqotole said the gift will mean a lot to these children. “I can see the kids cannot wait until Monday so they can put on their new pairs and the socks,” He said to collective laughter.

MOTIVATIONAL CORNER

zyd mzamo

Hold your head high and keep your goals Your goals are the vehicle to use for your destination. In my journal I once penned these lines: “Keep your eyes glued to your goals.” I had initially penned this for myself. In your quest to succeed, how many times have you had your attention go astray. I can bet you this has happened a lot of times. I have even experienced this during supplications. This and that thought would fly past, thus distracting me from my prayer. Until I realised that If I am not careful, my prayers would be just as empty. More of an empty shell. Sometimes we hasten to utter prayers without thinking. We want it to be over and done with, so we can engage in other activities. As if that were the basis of our living. I guess you could say the same when it comes to goals. If you have goals, rather stick to them. They should be your guiding light. They steer you to your destination. You dare not abandon them? Its a poser, though, for we don’t realise our follies until when it is too late. Have you ever felt the void left after abandoning your goals. Try having goals and the just dump them, and you will understand what I am about.

When you have goals, and something crops us, ignore it. Or should you? I don’t know. If it makes you work harder, I don’t think you should ignore it. But if it confuses you, and makes you unhappy, I think it is time you said goodbye to it. Some things seem to make us unhappy these days, especially if they are a noise to your ears. But again, distraction is necessary for your growth. You can’t live without contradictions. There must be that thing that crosses your path. It is how you respond to it that is important. As long as it does not temper with your goals, let it be. Let it take its course and pass you by. Where it ends is none of your business. What is your business are your goals. Again they should take you to where you will make a difference in people’s lives. We all have a mission in life. You know, if you have a goal in life, you should know that. Your mission is very important. Don’t go about thinking your goals are a joke. They are not. What if the universe wants you to do that? If it is that, go ahead and do it. You’ve been blessed. Don’t allow chaos around you to distract you. It has been there, and will always be there. Stay the course. Don’t waiver. Something will give in. Stay positive.

“Iqhayiya” brings pride and joy MBONGISENI MASEKO Iqhayiya High School girl’s rugby team continues to reap rewards for their dedication and resilience. Led by respected coach, Thembani Ngubelanga, who doubles as a teacher at the school, the team was honoured for their outstanding work during the Western Cape Sport Awards 2015 function held at Reebokskloof wine estate last Friday. They were crowned in the category of Best Developing School Team of the Year. This comes after the team won all of their 12 games in the 2014 schools league. The award has now secured them a place to compete in the National Sports Awards in Pretoria, in September. The nominees in the 19 categories were all winners at the regional Sport Awards, which were held in November 2014. Nominations were received via their respective sport federations in each region, and final decisions on the nominees and winners for the Provincial awards were made by an adjudication committee. Ngubelanga, who is also head coach for junior and senior Western Province Women’s Rugby teams, said his team is well known and causes discomfort to other teams. “We do not have competition here in Khayelitsha. Other coaches from other areas also shake when I appear, because they know how good we are. We play brilliant rugby, and with are not being arrogant about it” Ngubelanga said. Lusanda Nazo, also a coach and teacher at the school, has also been selected to be the manager for Western Province Sevens, Under 18 girl’s team. Two learners from the school were selected to form part of the provincial Under 16 team that flew to Durban last year, and four

Ngubelanga was also awarded as the best coach during the South African Top School Championship, in 2013 and Lindiwe Skeyi, a learner from the school, was awarded as a player of the tournament. The school has since lifted a number of trophies in provincial and national level in previous years. Asanda Dudumashe, the captain of the team, said hard work always pays off for them. “I am very happy that we won the award,

because we train very hard. Our play ground is not up to standard so I think that also count on our favour when we play with other teams. We also have a very good coach, that is why we achieve a lot,” Dudumashe said. Ayanda Mbova, the school principal said the school managed to achieve all the awards in difficult circumstances such as the lack of transport when they need to go play. “We are very excited. We want to make rugby a recognised sport that can be played in townships. Ngubelanga is known in rugby fraternity and he has grown to occupy big roles in the

province together with Nazo,” Mbova said. Anton Bredell, acting MEC of Cultural Affairs and Sport, congratulated those nominated and the winners. “We love celebrating excellence in the Western Cape and these nominees are excellent at what they do. They are also excellent ambassadors for the various sporting codes and entities they represent. And they are role models for people in their communities and across the province. We look forward to hearing more about them in years to come,” Bredell said.

Church goers empowered ZILA MKONTO Seventeen women who attended a skills development project are in seventh heaven after completing the course with flying colours. The project, facilitated by Orchard Africa - an international missionary organisation -sourced the women from several churches in Khayelitsha. They were put on a stringent learning exercise that included running small businesses, making baby toys and baked products. Course facilitators Mbali Mahlangu and Petro Louise Smit said they were thrilled by the women’s enthusiasm and eagerness to learn. Orchard Africa youth care training director Michelle Smit said their focus is on four specific programs.

“We’re a ministry on a mission to develop and equip the local church and its leaders to be the responsive to poverty and the spectre of injustice,” she said. Smit said each program is designed to meet the needs of African people by providing immediate relief, reconstruction and long-term personal development. “The programs we use to empower the women from these communities are our tools, and the local religious sector is our platform and hope in Jesus Christ the Saviour is used as our message to the participants,” she said. One of the attendees Zizipho Zali said she had learned a lot in the course. “I will be starting my own little business and hopefully grow it ,” she said. Thabisa Mlumiso said the knowledge learnt from the course would help her in the long run.

Ntonzima, nominee for PAC The tragedy of the Sharpeville and Langa massacres of 1960 will forever be engraved in our memories. On Human Rights Day this year, it was not different as Africanists and their supporters from various parts of the Western Cape graced this wonderful day in the history of Azania. It was as if the bones of our ancestors were vibrating, and the spirit was so high, deep and profound that past leadership of the PAC was ‘unofficially’ reflected and deliberated upon. A lot of progressive ideas were thrown into space about who is the right man to lead the Pan Africanist Movement of Azania. Judging by the mood of those present, it was clear that there is a need for an Africanist leader who epitomises political-intellectual growth and profound understanding of the PAC principles, philosophy, slogans and strategic objectives. At this juncture, the PAC is facing many challenges and was almost run down by its inability to identify good, quality leaders who have lived and breathed Pan Africanism and the gospel of total liberation of Africans in Azania, Africa and in the Diaspora. For the position of the President, the name of Lulamile Ntonzima emerged.

The masses characterised Ntonzima as a unifying figure that espouses the values and the spirit of our Founding Fathers. Sons and daughters of Azania let us brace ourselves by supporting Ntonzima’s candidacy. He is schooled and distilled in the PAC philosophy and policy direction. Comrade Ntonzima will engage in the process of changing the fortunes of the disenfranchised. As a leader, Ntonzima, rejects neo-colonialism, neo-liberalism, imperialism and neo-capitalism envisaged by and characterised in the Freedom Charter. Lulamile Ntonzima is a vocal and vibrant leader with great vision who will take the PAC forward. As a young leader, he understands the PAC philosophical underpinnings, the problems confronting the poor communities, and also appreciates the material importance of Socialist Democracy and African Scientific Socialism to resolve African problems. Ntonzima was born a leader. He shares the vision and aspirations of great Pan Africanist leaders in Azania. He is advanced politically, educationally, culturally and socially. Above all, he is a disciplined cadre of the movement.

Gogo ufunisa ngabantwana bakhe Matutu Tsoadie’s(pictured) living conditions are such an eyesore that members of her community have sent out an emergency call to all who know her daughters to come forward with their de-

tails. Gogo Tsoadie stays alone in Site C, and says her children’s names are Nosicelo and Nontsikelelo Singaphi, from Colesberg and Bethuel. If you know them call 0812471852.

Statues: Mandela legacy no longer relevant to many We are hardly into the first quarter of the year, and it seems to be characterized by a spate of mass actions against the existing national heritage sites of the country. The whole phenomenon started at the University of Cape Town, which is well known for its liberal values. The irony of those liberal values is that they have yielded a negative and reductionistic approach towards social transformation in post Apartheid South Africa. Such a radical act by an institution of this calibre leaves so much to be desired in terms of how the institution struggles to re-position itself in post 1994 South Africa. In fact, it is a true reflection of ignorance of what social transformation is all about, as perceived and understood by the majority of post modern South Africans. South Africans will recall that just after our country attained its freedom in 1994, the new Government of National Unity, led by late Nelson Mandela (a time–tested political leader) came up with programmes that were based on developing and reconstructing our nation. This was based on the realization that Apartheid policies had done an invaluable damage to the South African nation as a whole. It was particularly in this context that programmes such as Truth and Reconciliation(TRC) and Reconstruction and Development programme(RDP)were introduced. The naïve among us believed that RDP only entailed the building of houses and toilets for the previously disadvantaged. RDP was based on instilling a new culture of tolerance, rainbow nation building, as well as social cohesion with

the intent to project a new and positive image to the international community. These programmes were also meant to ensure that South Africans became good citizens and ambassadors. Many statues are built to commemorate historical events, or the lives of influential people. Many of them are intended as public art, exhibited outdoors or in public buildings. Some statues gain fame in their own right, separate from the person or concept they represent, as with Steve Biko’s and Nelson Mandela’s. Common to all the statues now under threat is the association with past history of domination and subjugation. In 1994, having vanquished Apartheid, South Africans were left with nothing else, but the courage to forgive, hence these statues were never in the agenda for demolition from the begining. They are a true reflection of the fact that South Africa was not immune from other global mishaps brought about by imperialists and capitalists and is therefore also a product of both philosophy and history. Destroying national statues is a clear indication that the pillars of Nelson Mandela’s Legacy are no longer relevant and should therefore be done away with if South Africans want absolute social transformation, as opposed to that of Nelson Mandela. This is sad, as history unfortunately leaves no room for people run by emotions. It is in this context I argue that “The country-wide demolition of statues is nothing else, but a programme to put an end to Nelson Mandela’s Legacy”. THEMBILE MAGOPENI via email

Service delivery protests not done right way The way service delivery protests are conducted nowadays needs to be revisited. There are two methods: one is where people have genuine complaints and must be attended to urgently. The second one is where anyone who is high on nyaope or whatever will organise his friends to stop people who are going to work and block pupils from going to school. The second one mustn’t be entertained

and must be dealt with severely. How can protesters deny emergency vehicles like ambulances access to those who are sick? Why do they chase away journalists when they are the ones who publicise their grievances? If we don’t deal with this madness now, one day we will find ourselves trapped in a march to legalise nyaope and other drugs. THABO MLEBE Langa

Protest, but do not destroy A few weeks ago, residents from BM Section in Khayelitsha were protesting for decent houses. During their protest, they also damaged the OR Thambo Hall. This is the same Hall that accomodated them last year when their shacks were burnt down. They had forgotten how the hall had helped them in their time of need. Destroying infrastructure is not a solution to their problems. They might have managed to vandalise the hall but I’m sure that they did not get any satisfaction from all of that. They were burning tires on the road and the road was damaged. This is what is going to happen next. They’ll protest again blaming the government for low service delivery, their core issue will be “pot holes on the road” the same road they damaged themselves. This week, Site C residents were also protesting. I think the protest was mainly about houses. They closed down the road, buses could not go through because of what was happenig.

My advise to them is that they should first elect a team who is going to lead and represent them. Secondly, they should ask them to represent them to the gorvernment, go to the office of the MEC. That is the procedure that should be followed. I think we know of all these procedures but we are just ignoring them. There’s a danger in ignorance. If the MEC is not giving them what they want, then they can protest. They should march straight to the MEC offices. Black child, Black Nation, Black society, can we please stop vandalising our own infrastructures. Remember we are all benefiting from this infrastructure. In conclusion, before we damage them (infrastructure) remember how we benefited from them in the past, how we are benefiting from them now, and how we are still going to benefit from them in the future. Let’s think wise. MASIXOLE HLATUKA Khayelitsha

A story of success centred on the need for self-worth MANDLA MAHASHE Although fashion labels seem to mushroom from every corner in the townships, still, one enterprising youngster has identified a niche market and is now running with it. Luyanda Bhatyi’s venture is called T-Shirt Printing Enterprise, and is the only one of its kind in Khayelitsha where one can walk in and have an item printed on demand. Bhatyi,22, who works from his Harare home, began his business while studying business management at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in 2011. “I started printing T-shirts to make pocket money but as time went on, I realised that I was actually making good money for a student. “In 2013, I had saved enough money to buy myself two printing machines and started to work from my mother’s bedroom since she is away in the Eastern Cape,” he said. Bhatyi said that he was tired of having to travel from Khayelitsha to Salt River or Observatory whenever he needed to print. “As far as I know, I’m the only one that prints clothing material,”. Bhatyi said any order is good business, as he is not beholden to any brand in particular. Today, his clientele varies from churches to local fashion fundis whose aim is to be different from the rest.

Bhatyi also has his footprint-so to speakfirmly in pop culture as musicians such as Dj Mizz, Siphe Tebeka and events organisers like ISjokoHop are major clients. “People prefer to come to me because of the quality of my work. Many printing shops prefer to use rubber like substances which disintegrate after a while...I use a velvet touch which is a far better option,” “I have worked with a lot of people and I hope that my business grows out of my home but I still want to remain in the township. I think that being the only clothing material printing business open to the public, I should remain within the community,” he said. He said his biggest challenge was that other businessmen operation in the same industry don’t take him seriously. “Whenever I go to refill or buy something for my machines they always ask me if I have been sent by someone. Most of them are old white men and they cannot believe that such a young guy from the township is also running such a business. However, after getting to terms with this they always ask me how the market is going in the township and I always tell them that it’s great because the only competition I have is me,” he jokes. Bhatyi is contactable on 0737095798 or on email bhatyi@gmail.com.

CONNECT TO THE CITY Does your card expire next month? It has been three eventful years since the launch of MyCiTi’s innovative automated fare system and the myconnect card. More than 500 000 myconnect cards have been issued and they have become a must-have item in the wallets and purses of residents and visitors to Cape Town.

Y

our myconnect card is much more than a ticket to ride the ever-expanding network of MyCiTi routes. It’s also a sophisticated banking product. There are two sections to the myconnect. One allows you to load Mover points that save you 30% on fares, no matter what time or what day of the week you travel. The other allows you to load money, which can be used to pay for your MyCiTi fares at the Standard rate, or to use a debit card to pay for purchases of up to R200 at any shop that accepts debit cards. You can have the best of both worlds by loading money in both sections at once time. The only drawback to it being a banking

card is that it has an expiry date on the face of the card. If you were one of the first passengers to start using the system, or you received a free card in one of the promotions around the launch of a new route, your card may be one of the first batch of 10 000 that are expiring on 31 May 2015. Here’s the good news Check the face of the card and if the date is 05/15 then you only have a few more weeks to use it. The good news is that the balance on your card, whether it is loaded as Standard or Mover points, will not expire and can be immediately transferred

Get your new replacement card free of charge at one of the special card expiry kiosks at Civic Centre and Table View stations. All you have to do is to take your ID book, passport or driver’s licence along with your expiring card to get your new card. The process takes 10-

Cindy Zibaya “I commute from home in Khayelitsha to Sea Point, and MyCiTi saves me about three hours a day in travelling time. It’s very good.”

there can be no extension of the deadline of 31 May 2015. If you miss the deadline, your card won’t work when you want to tap in on 1 June and you will have to buy a new card for R35. You won’t lose the money loaded on your expired card but it will take 31 days for the balance to be transferred to your new one.

Lwandle’s ‘Shai’ crowned TARZAN MBITA Being armed with a deadly pair of fists, possessing a self-confidence the size of a double decker bus, and a body as lithe as that of a boa constrictor; these are the lethal attributes the new champion needed to vanquish her opponent. Sharodine “Shai” Fortuin displayed all of the above and some more on Sunday on the road to dethroning Gcobisa Simanga of her SA Junior Bantamweight crown. The fight took place at the town hall in Fort Beaufort, near Alice in the Eastern Cape. Shai took her out in the fifth of a 10 round fight, and boxing enthusiasts who came out in their numbers said it was a memorable bout. Promoter Andile Sidinile said: “Awe inspiring”. Like a predator, she circled her, taunted her with left jabs, shuffled backwards, and then, going for the kill, she would pounce with that lethal right hand, sending her opponent scuttling for the ropes. In the fourth round she dislodged Simanga’s shoulder blade. This horrified Simanga, for in their first encounter, the victor had done the same to her shoulder. Shai knew where her proverbial Achilles heel lay, and used this weakness to her advantage. In the fifth round, Simanga was knocked

out, after absorbing a barrage of blows to the body and head. “I knew she could never go the full 10 rounds with me,” Shai asserted. According to her, she took the fight to her rival from the first gong. “She was overweight, and this added to my advantage . . . nevertheless, I was always psyched up for a win,” she shared. The future looks bright for her, lack of sponsorship notwithstanding. Shai said she was looking at fighting in the international arena, and with a clean slate of six straight wins, including three knock downs, there should be no stopping her. Charles Mjikelo, an uncle, mentor and promoter to Shadi, was elated his niece brought the title to the Western Cape. “Her dedication to the sport is amazing. She has sacrificed a lot to be where she is today,” he offered The two stay together at a house on the same grounds as the stadium and Ncedolwethu Centre. But for Mjikelo, the lack of sponsorship and funding for female pugilists is cause for concern. “If only the big commercial guns, SABC sports and the sports ministry can be involved, all will be smooth sailing for the girl,” he concluded. Mjikelo said they are hoping to secure a challenger by June, whereafter they will explore available opportunities at international level.
