Uthe basamelwe yimatha kuba abazi ukuba bazakusebenzela phi. “Eyona ngxaki yeyokuba apha eKapa abantu bohlukene; kuba kukho aba bangamagoduka benza imisebenzi emakhaya, ze kubekho abo sele bengabahlali apha eKapa. Ngelishwa ke abo basebenzela kwiphondo lweMpuma Koloni ababathatheli ntweni abo basebenzela apha eKapa. Yiyo lonto bengakuboni ukubaluleka kweendawo zolwaluko apha ekapa,”. To make it you should dream

MOTIVATIONAL CORNER

zyd mzamo What’s so symbolic about Good Friday? I mean real symbolic. Not what it is about? Some people don’t know. And they will never know. You’ve got to know these things. You can’t be

naïve all the time. You know what is symbolic about it? It is that you escape from slavery. I mean not physically: mentally. Yeah, that is what you do. Some people use booze to

escape from their problems. They drown them with booze. When they are boozed, they forget about them. And live blissfully for a while. I remember how I used to forget about mine

when I was boozed. I was free and happy. But let me be sober and they will come back. I was not aware of that. I thought I was drinking because I loved booze. But let the truth be told, I

was unhappy. I was only happy when I was boozed. I wonder how many people are like that. Who think they are drinking because they like booze. But there is more to it than that. They

just don’t want to face the truth. They are running away from it. Not slavery. You see there are many things that enslave us; for example bad influences. Some people will tell you not to dream. To me that’s a bad influence. Why shouldn’t you dream? To make it you should dream. People that make it dream. They have time for their dreams. They do not run away from them. They invite them. They say, “Come dream. I want to dream about dreams.” They have taught themselves to do that. They have

developed a habit. They don’t push their dreams away, and say, “I will deal with you later.” Let me go to a shebeen. Let me chill out with friends. They have died from such things. They have escaped from such influences. Some friends can enslave you. They can make you do things that you do not want. And eventually do them. Some can tell you crime is the only solution to our woes. Or having many guys. There was a girl I used to know. She was beautiful. She used her beauty to lure guys. And it was a

joke that one was for her clothes, the other for groceries, and so on. And other women, who saw her doing this, envied her. She was bad influence. I hope they did not follow her. They died from her influence. And woke anew. You know, we need to die from many influences. We need to die from fear. We need to die from doubt. Courage should resurrect us. So is hope. We cannot be our old self, enslaved by the unknown. We should go out there and do things. That’s my Good Friday. Stay positive.

Qondie gets his gift MBONGISENI MASEKO Thembinkosi Qondela, the founder of Whizz ICT Centre, finally jetted off to Texas in the United States of America to collect the Dewey Winburne Community Service Award he won this year. According to him, the trip to collect the award abroad was an eye opener for him. Whizz ICT was the only organisation from the continent to be nominated in the awards that were organised by South by South West Coast. The awards are meant to give recognition to outstanding organisations that uplift their communities. Qondela said he learnt a lot during his stay on overseas soil and that he came back with new ideas which are set to positively contribute to upgrading services in the centre. “It was a good experience for me. I networked and got to learn how technology is used for education. There is a huge difference between how technology is used overseas and here in the country. In USA children are taught at a young age to use the computer. You find a child in an advance stage of using computer like doing coding or programming,

while here most children are still struggling to use a mouse. There is a lot that still needs to be done in this country when it comes to using technology for education,” Qondela said. He has made contact with a number of centres in Britain, USA and other countries which he hopes will help him with ideas to improve services. “I am grateful for the award. I will make a follow up with the centres that I networked with. I am hoping that something good will come out from our collaboration. There is a lot that we can learn from them,” he added. Qondela also said there are challenges that they are still facing such as the lack of space, lack of equipment, human resources and other staff which must be added to meet the growing demand of their services. The centre was founded in 2008, in Site C, and provides, among other services, computer training, technology development, information services, communications services, prepares youth for the jobs market, develop small businesses, office administration and printing services. They work close with UCT, National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) and Harambe.

Grab your big chance to earn while you learn City’s job readiness programme for unemployed residents pays off The City’s Learn to Earn programme, which seeks to give residents an economic hand up, is focusing on areas such as Athlone, Hanover Park, Capricorn, Grassy Park, Mitchells Plain and Lwandle, amongst others for 2014/2015. Read more below: The City of Cape Town, in partnership with the organisation Learn to Earn, has run a skills development programme in six subcouncils across the city every year since mid-2012. This training and capacity building project focuses on building the technical and entrepreneurial skills of unemployed residents in Cape Town. The project is in its third year of implementation and works in phases. The first two phases cover business skills training and capacity building in a core economic focus area, while the third phase focuses on a limited number of participants who have demonstrated entrepreneurial ability. Each phase of the programme is aimed at increasing the market-related skills of unemployed residents that will allow access to available employment opportunities in their local community and surrounding areas. ‘Partnering with effective programmes such as Learn to Earn is an essential part of our efforts in creating an opportunity city. The objectives of this programme align with our aim to enhance job readiness and thus the employability of our residents. For me, one of the greatest elements of this project is the practicality of it, as the programme actually links graduates with potential employment opportunities and cultivates an environment conducive to successful entrepreneurship. Cape College alumnus converge for unity ZILA MKONTO Former students of the Cape College of Education gathered in Surrey Estate on the weekend to launch a union aimed at committing teachers to a sense of nation building. Mthobeli Tengimfene, Cape College Union (CCU) founding president said the purpose of the organisation was to “ define the future by being involved in educational matters”. This after one of their own had fallen on hard-times. “CCU was started when we heard of the plight of a Cape College graduate, he had fallen on hard times and he was assisted by group members,” he said. Tengimfene said since then it became a “spontaneous movement that sought to revive the spirit of Cape College” He said the organisation will mobilise all the Cape College alumni around the country to “be actively involved” in educating the nation. Some of CCU’s plans include mentoring programmes , creating resource centres and developing a business wing for teachers. Former Cape College lecturer Zola Sikiti who is now based in Durban hailed the formation of the union as a great step towards “rebuilding our education.” “We want teachers to be better equipped. Coming from the old Cape College we are

proud to be channelling our energies into a venture like this,” he said. Another CCU member from Umtata, Nkululeko Somhlahlo said they will use this platform to intervene in educational crises, “Many of the Cape College alumni are no longer in the education sector, some are in business and we are calling upon them to join us and help,” Somhlahla said. He said former and current teachers must find a “niche to make a difference in communities” CCU will establish chapters nationally in all provinces but at the moment it operates in Gauteng, Western and the Eastern Cape. Kapa CCU chairperson Mbuyie Hlomela said this body will greatly “empower teachers”. “We thank Mr Tengimfene for his vision because now we know we have a voice. We are all united people who are concerned about the state of affairs in this country particularly the youth of today,” said Hlomela. KCCU organiser Nkululeko Mpiriri Ngada said he was happy to be part of the launch. “Many alumni have joined the private sector, but all are still inclined to uplift the majority of South Africans, particularly in the education field,” he said Ngada gave a brief history of the Cape College of Education.

The Cape College alumni met at Shalimar Hotel in Athlone over the weekend “The Cape College of Education was a teachers college that was meant train teachers whom the apartheid regime had hoped would be an extension of it policies. But Cape College became the hotbed of revolutionary thought and politics, what with dedicated trainee teachers, who were bent on uplifting the standard of education of the black child. hoped that CCU’s objectives will uplift the poor level of education in the country. “With the commitment shown here, we can’t go wrong ,” she said. There were emotional scenes when more than 100 names of the late former Cape College of Education students and six lecturers were beamed on the screen as CCU members sang a hym of remembrance at the conclusion of the two-day conference

Phuza-joint owners ‘gatvol’ MANDLA MAHASHE Illegal shebeen owners came out in droves on Tuesday to support one of their own members facing charges at the Khayelitsha Magistrates’ court. The illegal traders, all members of the Cape Flats Shebeeners Association of the Western Cape said they were fed up with being on the wrong side of the law. Carrying banners that read: “A better living for all,”, “Why must our children go to bed hungry,” and “No food, no dignity, no right to life,”. Silas Nyombo was the man whose arrest sparked the protest. He faced charges of trading in liquor without a valid licence. During the protest, the group brandished placards blaming both Western Cape Premier Helen Zille and Police Commissioner General Arno Lamoer for being the major obstacles for potential applicants..

They claim that the process of applying for permit in the province is too long and this is done to frustrate aspirations of Black and Coloured business people. Basil Williams said: “This is done so that they can keep us down while the white owned retail outlets like Spar and Shoprite continue to profit by selling alcohol in our areas. Even if one meets the requirements the process takes years...why wait that long when we have families to feed,”. Williams said there was a backlog of about 8000 of their members whose applications were yet to be processed. “We want the process to be fast-tracked so that owners stop living in fear of the police. Our members get arrested on a daily basis and it’s really bad because these people have families to feed,” he said, fuming. The association is planning to host a march April 16 from Keizersgracht Street to the provincial legislature building.

METROPOLITAN CUP: Gugs’ church based outfit impresses diksi pundits

JL ZWANE FC GETS 2ND PLACE ZILA MKONTO JL Zwane under-19 team might not have won the 2015 Metropolitan U-19 Premier Cup champions but they gave a good glimpse of their capabilities. They lost 1-0 in a thrilling final against Glendene FC at Erica Park in Belhar on, Easter Monday. Midfielder Abdulaleem Jacobs’s 8th minute strike was enough to seal victory for the Athlone-based side that had come all the way through the early qualifying rounds to emerge as the winners of the 27th edition of the most prestigious youth tournament on the South African football calendar. JL Zwane coach Thando Sodinga was not very disappointed with the result at all. “Look, my boys surprised everyone , including themselves by reaching the finals. Before the tournament they were nobodies but now they have become the talk of South Africa,” said Sodinga. True to his word , there was very little to choose between the two sides over the 80 minutes and JL Zwane returned to Gugulethu to tumultous reception having enthused the 25 000 or so crowd at the the stadium. Sodinga explained that this team has been “moulded over a period of time”.

“Most of the younger boys travelled to Italy last year and they had a very impressive outing,” he said. The team won R20 000 for its effort, Sodinga was voted coach of the series while rising star Mihlali Mayambela walked away with player of the tournament accolade. “Congratulations to the winners on a well-deserved victory. Once again, this tournament has been a resounding success for us as sponsors, not only in regard to our belief in the development of youth through football but also in the participation and contribution of the entire community towards making this event unique. It is an essential element of Metropolitan’s approach to engaging with its client base in ways that directly result in the upliftment of the areas in which we operate,” said MMI Executive for Brand and Corporate Affairs, Vuyo Lee. Tournament director, P.J. Williams expressed his satisfaction with this year’s edition, particularly in respect of the performances of the non-academy teams. “I am extremely happy to see how the amateur club teams have excelled in the tournament,” he said.

Bafana grab Onke Rum cup Khayelitsha-based Bafana United were crowned as new champions of the Onke Rum Memorial Easter Cup after hammering Rising Stars of Hout Bay 3-0 in a highly entertaining final game at Mandela Park Sports Stadium on Easter Monday. The tournament, in its second season, was hosted by Mandela Park Local Football Association in conjunction with Magents Football Club and the family of Onke Rum, who passed away while participating in the Easter Soccer Tournament at the same field in 2013. The event was hosted to remember and honour him. Both Bafana and Stars went to the final as favourites after terrorising opponents in the round-robin and knockout stages. The game lived up to the expectations and started on fire with Man of the Match Bongile Thanduxolo Booi, affectionately known as Bra T, wasting no time to find the back of the net in the opening minutes.

Stars tried hard to find the equaliser but find it difficult to break through the resolute Bafana defence coupled with brilliant acrobatic saves from their goalkeeper. The score remained 1-0 at halftime and Bafana added another goal midway through the second stanza through Aviwe Nomfenge and Booi grabbed his brace in the last quarter of the game. Bafana took home the R10 000 prize money while Stars got the R5 000 runner’s up prize. Fire Fighter received bronze medals and R3 000 after beating Hasco United 4-3 on penalties after their third-place play-off match ended 2-2 on regulation time. Hasco received a R2 000 consolation prize. Bafana’s Mfundo Vuba was the Top Goal Scorer of the Tournament with 13 goals and Stars’ Thulani Joni was awarded the Player of the Tournament, thanks to generous prizes from Nedbank Khayelitsha.
