There’s something beautiful about every season, but Autumn is extra special with the rich and vibrant colours that it brings.
My favourite things about this time of year are taking snaps on early morning walks and catching the sunrise, making butternut squash soup and comforting dinners, and sipping hot toddies and mulled wine in the evening!
There’s a host of fantastic events taking place with Halloween, Bonfire Night and the festive season coming up. I love the lead up to Christmas and have dates in the diary already! Head to our 8-page What’s On guide for ideas on what you can do, plus find more on our website.
Enter our latest competition for a chance to win a delicious Breakfast for Two at The Garden Bar & Restaurant, Montonthere are two prizes to win!
Enjoy this issue and this fabulous season!

When the present City of Salford came into being in 1974, it inherited four Twin Towns, one from the existing Salford and three from three of the four other boroughs / urban districts that amalgamated with it. These twinnings had been made over about a nine-year period, approximately twelve years after the end of World War II.
Twinning had become popular in Europe during World War II, initially between allies as a way of establishing solidarity links between cities that went through similar devastating events, such as Coventry and Stalingrad (Volgograd). After the war in 1951 the Council of European Municipalities and Regions was formed. This project initiated by a group of European mayors was routed in the conviction that “the seeds of a peaceful and prosperous Europe, rising from the ashes of World War II, would be sown through city-to-city and region-to-region cooperation”. It now included some twinning arrangements between former enemies, as well as allies.
Eccles and Narbonne twinned in April 1957, Worsley and Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine in January 1961, Swinton & Pendlebury and Lünen in March 1966 and Salford and Clermont-Ferrand in May 1966. Three of our four twinnings were with France but Swinton and Pendlebury extended friendship with Lünen in what was at that time West Germany.
The Lünen twinning wasn’t without controversy. Its original proponent was Leslie Suggit, who had been responsible for some prisoners of war at the end of World War II. Les befriended a couple of these prisoners, including Ernst Schwarzenberger
Salford and its Twin Towns
from Lünen. After the War Les returned to Germany to meet up with Ernst and from their friendship the idea of Swinton and Pendlebury twinning with Lünen was born. Les, who became a local Councillor, utilised his role as Mayor (1961–1962) to further his ambition but despite apparent early encouragement from his colleagues, some of them subsequently resisted the idea, as they still harboured anti-German feelings from the War. Although the plan was nearly defeated, Les managed to win through in the end and the relationship was forged, following initial mutual visits of mineworkers to each other’s’ towns, as well as a visit by another Mayor, Evelyn Lynch. The agreement was signed by her successor, Ronald Watton and his German counterpart.
The situation for Worsley and Saint-Ouen-sur-Seine was also driven by some particularly enthusiastic people, including Joseph Pennington, a former Chairman of Worsley Urban District Council and father of later Salford Mayor Bernard Pennington. Joseph worked with Fernand Lefort, Mayor of SaintOuen to set up their towns’ twinning. Fernand can be seen with the Worsley delegation at the signing of the agreement in France in 1961 in this image from the Ville de Saint-Ouen sur Seine Facebook page.

When life gets busy, it’s easy to put off thinking about things like wills, estate planning, or lasting powers of attorney. These are topics many of us would rather avoid, but they play a vital role in protecting what matters most - your family, your assets and your wishes.
At Widdows Pilling LLP, we specialise in private client work. That means we help individuals and families with the legal tools they need to plan ahead, manage their affairs, and ensure their wishes are respected at every stage of life.
Why Now Is the Right Time to Plan
No one likes to imagine a time when they can’t make decisions for themselves, or the possibility of passing away. But having a clear, legally sound plan in place brings peace of mind for you and your loved ones.
A well-drafted will ensures your estate is passed on according to your wishes. Without one, the law decides who gets what, which may not reflect what you want. Similarly, setting up a Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) means you choose who can make decisions on your behalf if you lose capacity, whether temporarily or long-term.
These are especially important conversations for older clients and their families. As people live longer and family structures become more complex, early planning becomes even more crucial. We often work with elderly individuals who want the reassurance of knowing everything is in place, not just for legal reasons, but to reduce stress and uncertainty for their loved ones.
Planning for Peace of Mind: Why Private Client Services Matter
Supporting Families Through Life’s Key Moments
Many of our clients come to us at a time of transition - retirement, downsizing or following a bereavement. These moments can bring emotional strain, and legal matters often feel like yet another burden. We aim to ease that pressure by offering practical advice in plain English and supporting you at every step. Whether it’s updating an old will, registering an LPA, or dealing with probate after a loss, we approach every matter with sensitivity and care. We take the time to listen, to explain your options clearly, and to make sure you feel informed and in control.
A Human Approach to Legal Advice
Here at Widdows Pilling LLP, we pride ourselves on building long-term relationships with our clients. We understand that these are deeply personal issues, often tied up with strong emotions and complex family dynamics. Our role is to guide you through the process with clarity, compassion, and expertise.
As well as private client work, we also assist clients with residential and commercial conveyancing, and family and matrimonial matters - offering a full range of legal support when life takes its inevitable turns.
Whether you're getting your affairs in order for the first time or reviewing existing arrangements, we’re here to help. Planning for the future doesn’t need to be overwhelming - and with the right support, it can be surprisingly empowering.
If you would like to discuss your personal affairs in confidence, we’re just a phone call away.
As the days grow shorter and cooler, the last of the autumn colour will lift spirits as gardeners prune, plant and prepare for winter.
November is a month when there just does not seem to be enough hours of daylight for gardeners. And whilst much time is spent preparing for heavy frosts and downpours, pruning and planting will remind you that spring is just around the corner.
Pruning and cutting back
Many annuals and perennials have died back by now and need to be tidied. Annuals like sweet peas that just a short time ago were full of flowers have withered and died so need to be fully cleared. Roses need to be pruned back to prevent wind-rock which is where strong winds move rose plants loosening the soil around the base hindering growth.
Planting
It’s time for lots of planting! Trees can be planted, as can hedges which are havens for wildlife.
Winter bedding plants and spring bulbs, especially tulips, can be planted before the first of the heavy frosts arrive. Ensure you plant tulips about 15cm deep, making sure the pointed ends face upwards. It’s worth considering placing chicken wire over them if you have rodents in your garden. Many people like to plant tulip bulbs quite close together for maximum effect come spring.
Even as you have pulled up the last of this year’s sweet peas you can sow from seed in your greenhouse next spring’s early varieties including Spring Sunshine, Peggy Sue and Pandemonium. Sweet
peas germinate well in cooler temperatures, and they will grow strong roots.
Prepare for winter
Pots and containers need to be prepared for winter, move them to a frost-free place, or insulate them against frosts. Pots should be lifted slighted to stop them getting waterlogged.
Cleaning paths is another job for November. Pressure washing will allow you to clear moss, dirt and algae which could be slippery in winter. It is always advisable to wear the correct protective clothing and make sure your surfaces are suitable for this kind of cleaning. A gardening professional can offer excellent advice or assistance.
Consider helping wildlife
If you have a pond, now is the time to clear up any fallen leaves; lawns should also be raked to remove fallen leaves to stop the grass dying. Birds often struggle to find food in the colder months so consider installing a bird table or feeders, or make sure existing ones are in good condition. If you have any wood or logs, make a log pile as these are havens for all kinds of wildlife including small mammals, birds, insects and amphibians because they replicate natural habitats that you would find in woods or forests. Likewise, leaf piles can also provide food and shelter for different creatures.
There is much to be done in your garden this month - plenty to keep you busy, and most of it will be preparing for the next gardening year!

Butternut Squash Pasta
Preparation time: 25 mins
Cooking time: 25 mins
Serves: 4 to 6 servings
Ingredients
• 2 tablespoons olive oil
• Half a large squash or one whole small squash, peeled, deseeded and chopped in 2cm chunks.
• Salt and pepper
• 30g unsalted butter
• 1 small shallot or half a small onion, finely diced.
• 15g fresh sage leaves, finely chopped.
• 1 tbsp lemon juice
• 450g pasta tubes
• 25g fresh grated parmesan plus extra to serve.
Try this seasonal recipe...
This butternut squash pasta dish is healthy, comforting and delicious - perfect for these autumnal evenings. It’s rich, nutty and really easy to make!
Method
Heat the olive oil in a large stainless-steel pan. Add the diced squash, season with salt and pepper and cook until golden brown and tender, stirring occasionally. Add the unsalted butter and finely chopped shallot and continue cooking, stirring frequently for about a minute until the butter is lightly browned and smells nutty. Add the sage and stir to combine. Remove from the heat and stir in the lemon juice. Set aside.
Fill a medium or large saucepan with salted water and bring to the boil. Add the pasta tubes and cook until they are not quite fully cooked. Drain the pasta and reserve a couple cups of the liquid.
Add the almost-cooked pasta and about half a cup of the pasta water to the pan containing the squash. Bring everything to a simmer and stir constantly until the pasta finishes cooking, adding more water if required to keep the sauce loose. When the pasta is cooked, remove the pan from the heat and stir in the parmesan. Serve immediately, top with more parmesan at the table.
Tip: If you want to add meat to this dish, try chicken, sausage or chorizo - all would work well.
