Friends of Lightoaks Park: 2018 Plans

Community News

The Friends of Lightoaks Park is almost 2 years old now and going from strength to strength through the commitment and dedication of a group of motivated local residents.

The look of the park has been improved through regular maintenance and litter picking sessions, but also the feel of the Park has changed for the better through the seasonal events the Friends put on in 2017. It has been wonderful to see the park buzzing with life and families enjoying the green space, creating a real sense of community spirit in the green heart of our community. Big plans are underway for 2018’s schedule of activities and events including: Installing a duck island to protect our wildlife.

Working with City of Trees and the Council Ranger team on a tree planting event to create a fruit orchard. Co-hosting the Great British Spring Clean – Clean Up Claremont & Weaste campaign with the Friends of Buile Hill Park on 3rd/4th March. A community picnic for The Big Lunch,3rd June. Our annual summer event ‘Bee Active’ - a music and wellbeing family fun day (date TBA). Our usual Christmas Cracker event(date TBA).

With all this activity, the group are always very keen to welcome new members, so come and join us if you’d like to be part of this - everyone’s welcome.

Local Charities

Demand for Food Parcels Continues to Rise Salford Foodbank experienced another rise in the amount of emergency parcels that it gave out in 2017 and is appealing for more donations to help those who are struggling to put food on their table. Last year the foodbank gave out 5,045 three-day emergency food parcels of which 2,043 were for children. People attending any of the three foodbank centres in Salford are identified by local frontline care professionals, such as health visitors or social workers, and given a voucher to exchange for their food. Salford Foodbank manager Mark Whittington says: ‘2017 was a very busy year for us and we are expecting that this will continue throughout 2018. With over 99% of food donated by the public we are overwhelmed by peoples generosity but

still run low of particular Items including UHT milk, cartons of long life fruit juice and small jars of coffee. We would be very grateful if local residents could consider buying an item or two to help support local people in crisis.’ Donations can be left at the permanent collection points, at any time they are open, at: Sainsbury’s on Regent Road Morrisons in Eccles, or Tesco, Salford Precinct Alternatively, donations can be taken to: Salford Central Foodbank, Christ Central, Mocha Parade but please call 0161 637 4500 to confirm when you will be donating.

Local History

Worsley New Hall

Local residents will be familiar with the story of Worsley New Hall - built by the 1st Earl of Ellesmere, occupied by his family in 1846, and demolished just a century later. There are several sketches and photos of this building which many readers will recognise. However, one has remained hidden for many years and has only recently been located. It is by Frederick James Shields.

seemed to like the view of the Church very well and took it in to show his lordship. He returned with the gracious information that his lordship was very well pleased with it, and that I was to execute two more views of the hall, to be sent down to the house in London, 10 Belgrave Square, where they intend proceeding on Friday.' For this commission, the boy received the 'fabulous' sum of ÂŁ5.

Frederick James Shields was born in Hartlepool, Durham, in 1833. His father John moved the family to London in 1839 in search of better work. Still struggling to find a good position, he moved to Newton-le-Willows in 1848 and sent for his son Frederick to join him. By this time, Frederick was showing signs of being a very talented artist, having followed a course of study in the evenings in London.

The picture is now part of the Wellcome Collection in London. It measures 31.3 cm by 50.9 and is described as a drawing in pencil with white paint. The artist's signature and date appear in the bottom right-hand corner of the image. He was at this time sixteen years of age. Sadly, his father died a few weeks after this work was completed.

Shortly after coming to Lancashire, his father recognised that his own health was failing him and he returned to London for medical help at the Brompton Hospital, leaving Frederick at an address in Manchester. Over a period of about four months, the young boy (then aged 16) made several visits to Worsley, making drawings and sketches of the parish church of St. Mark, Worsley New Hall and local residents, in the hope of selling his work. In his diary, he made many references to visiting the rector and the Earl. On 27 November 1849, he wrote: '[Mr. Rasbotham] 18 LIVE IT LOCAL

His career then blossomed after his difficult early years. Frederic Shields (he started to write his name that way) moved back to London in 1864, where he met Dante Gabriel Rossetti. Through him, he came to know members of the Pre-Raphaelite circle, people like Ford Madox Brown, Rossetti and William Holman Hunt. He was present at the death of Rossetti on Easter Sunday 1882. A gallery at Ordsall Hall bears his name, a tribute to his brief stay there in the 1870's.

Spring Plotting Plotting on the Macmillan Plot... Finally, the last of the electrical work has been done at Tindall street so we now have lights in the toilet which turn on and off automatically - what a bonus! The solar panels are not yet working due to a missing plug connecting them to the control panel. Being made in China, finding a replacement isn’t simple. Hopefully, this final part of the scheme will be ready for when the sun shows up!! After all the rain we had this winter we need some dry time. Our ‘forced’ rhubarb has done really well, I think it has benefitted from all the rain and when the main crop is in full swing, we’ll keep up a watering regime since we now have 8 water butts. We gave the bed a feed of chicken manure in February too. The bird feeders have been very well used through the winter and we’re hoping the birds will stay and entertain us in summer. We found a good way to keep the squirrels off the feeders is to cut the top 6-8 inches off a plastic bottle, discard the lid and thread the cut length over the wire that the feeder is hung on. The plastic collar will rotate if a squirrel stands on it and the pest will end up on the ground. I’m sure they will find a way to overcome this but, it’s fun to see them looking puzzled for the moment. This idea is a good bit of ‘green’ thinking and you can use the remainder of the bottle as a miniature cloche for your plants and seedings.

greenhouse so they are growing on before they go into their beds. This helps to establish their roots before they face the open air. Don’t forget that some days may be feeling warmer and you need to keep on checking for slugs and snails, it’s amazing how they turn up from nowhere! Finally, are your potatoes ‘chitting’ well? They will need to be ready for planting by the middle/end of April, at the latest.

Around the City...

POORLOTS, IRLAM: The public enquiry into the

proposed extension of the allotments is now fixed and we should have a decision before the end of this year, we hope. It has taken a long time to get this far! This site has had a bad time with the rain the Federation is talking to the Council about how to overcome the waterlogging - raised beds may be a partial solution.

MOSSFIELD: This site has also suffered from waterlogging and advice from Liege University is being considered to see what can be done to improve conditions.

NEWHALL AVENUE: The extension plans have gone

awry with the Council transferring the adjoining land, which is the access area to the plot, to City West and they do not want to give access to the allotment over their land. Where this will all end up, who knows?

CLEAVLEYS: Have had a major ‘makeover’ of their

fencing and it’s hoped that this will have a beneficial affect on the whole site.

BLACKLEACH: Still very much “work-in-progress”.

If you have started peas or broad beans in pots or trays, you can transplant them now if your ground is not too wet, but keep an eye out for late frost. Cabbages can also go out now, but don’t forget it’s always better to delay until March has passed, unless we have an exceptionally warm, dry spell.

Discussions, ideas and financing are all ongoing and the hope is that decisions will be made this summer. If you are interested in a plot, please contact the SAF secretary carolyn.collins@me.com.
