From Filing to Fostering ... A TOP MOVE Former office worker Michelle has swapped her daily commute for the school run and juggling meetings for children’s parties and outings. After 40 years in administration she’s changed careers to become a full time foster carer and says it’s the best decision she ever made. “I had a break and then started looking around for something else to do. I wanted a new challenge” said Michelle who lives in Worsley. “I’d never done fostering before but I started with short term fostering as part of a team so

that helped me learn a lot at my own pace and suited me very well. I wish I’d had the support and training you get as a foster carer when I became a mum! “Now I’m caring for a nine year old and it’s great. I’ve also made friends with other foster carers and that really helps as you get ideas from each other on how to handle different situations you’ve never come across before. It’s the best thing I’ve ever done.” Salford City Council provides full training, financial and other support. Revolutionising Eye-Wear into a Fast Moving Fashion Accessory Specscart is a Manchester-born eye-wear startup. It is backed by the Manchester Enterprise Centre, and recently opened its first retail store in Walkden Town Centre by winning The Albert Gubay Award 2017. Specscart embarked with an idea to change the eye-wear industry in the UK. The market here has made it difficult to replace glasses and to own multiple pairs. It costs an average £150 to buy a decent pair of eyeglasses on the high-street; and £250 if we talk about Varifocals. This over-expensive nature has made our most intimate accessory into a mere instrument of sight correction. At this price, why would someone keep 10 pairs? Or why would a non-prescribed consumer buy a stylish pair of specs for digital protection or fashion? Or, probably that’s the reason we still use tapes and glue to fix the old broken pairs.

Specscart believes that a mandatory change is now needed in the market. That's the main purpose for Specscart’s existence. It wants to change eye-wear from being just an instrument of sight correction to a fast moving fashionable accessory. The startup offers highest quality glasses from £24.99 (including anti-reflective lenses) from a wide range of 400+ designs in-store & online at specscart.co.uk. This is so you actually make more room for glasses in your wardrobe. P.S. At Specscart your glasses are custom-made with the lenses in the UK. Make a difference...

Join the Manchester Midnight Walk 2018 Join St Ann’s Hospice for their annual Manchester Midnight Walk and make a real difference to a local charity.

Everyone over the age of 11 is welcome to take part, so why not get a group together and make it a night out with a difference?

This 10km sponsored midnight walk around the city is a really fun way to support St Ann’s. The walk begins and ends at Manchester Cathedral, with a great build up including performers, stalls and a Zumba warm-up. The evening starts from 9.00pm and fancy dress is welcomed, although every walker will receive a yellow t-shirt which can be decorated.

The Walker Family will be there, walking in memory of their Dad, Mike. Mike became a patient in 2016, and the family did the walk for the first time last year. They said “We did it with lots of our family and friends and it was good fun, and we’ll be there again this year. We will always be involved somehow with St Ann’s, raising money or volunteering our time. It’s our way of saying thank you for looking after our Dad.”

The walk also includes a Memory Garden, where messages to loved ones can be left and all those who finish the walk will get a medal to celebrate their achievement.

PILATES: Health Benefits 10 Reasons why you should try it Described as an art of controlled movements, pilates offers a number of both physical and mental benefits when practiced regularly as an exercise routine. 1. Focuses on Core Strength. Promoting strength and balanced muscle development as well as flexibility and increased range of motion for the joints.

6. Improves Posture. Good posture is a reflection of good alignment supported by a strong core. It is a position from which one can move freely.

2. Adaptable to many Fitness Levels and Needs. The foundations of Pilates movement apply to all. Building from core strength, focusing on proper alignment, and a body/mind integrative approach.

7. Increases Energy. It gets the breath and circulation moving, stimulates the spine and muscles giving you a feel-good factor.

3. Creates Strength without Bulk. It doesn’t build muscles, but develops toned muscles that work perfectly within the context of the body as a whole. 4. Increases Flexibility. Working towards a safe increase in length and stretch of the muscles and range of motion within the joints. 5. Focuses on Core Strength. The core muscles of the body are the deep muscles of the back, abdomen, and pelvic floor.

8. Promotes Weight Loss & Leaner Appearance. Pilates improves muscle tone, balances musculature, creating long, strong muscles and a leaner look. 9. Increases Body Awareness. Pilates is about ‘the complete coordination of body, mind and spirit’. Each movement practiced with ‘total attention’. 10. Professionally run local classes. Worsley Physio Clinic offer a range of Pilates Classes and One to One sessions. Classes, supervised by a Chartered Physiotherapist, will offer attention tailored to your needs.

FITNESS IN 2018

A Positive Mindset! A Positive Mindset is simple but important, as it can be the difference between you having a productive day or can make your day more challenging through its absence. Whether this is by being disorganised, possibly a negative selfimage of yourself or by simply being a ‘glass half empty’ kind of person. The same goes for your week, month and even your year, if you start the year with a healthy and positive mindset then I can guarantee that it will be more enjoyable and successful. To start you will need to look at the bigger picture and not just want to train and eat well to “drop a few pounds” and then give-up, but to make an

investment in your life for the better. We are what we repeatedly do, and a positive approach is achieved in steps. Swapping a lie-in for a morning walk, skipping that hangover for a Sunday morning run and swapping your Friday night Chinese for a healthy and nutritious meal. These first few weeks will be crucial for your growth and I believe you will find that once your approach changes, your circumstances will also change and you will be on the path to a better, healthier you.

“Pigs Might Fly” The amazing aqueducts of Barton –Part 1 When, in 1759, the Duke of Bridgewater commissioned his engineer, James Brindley, to build the canal that would bear the Duke’s titular name, he specified that its route be from his coal mines at Worsley to a market for the fuel in Salford. It was to be a “contour” canal that followed the same land elevation throughout its course and therefore required no locks. To achieve this it would proceed from Worsley to Barton and then follow close to the north bank course of the River Irwell up to Salford. Work was started, but then abruptly stopped by a change of mind which has never been explained. It was decided instead to cross the Irwell at Barton and continue along the south bank - to Manchester. A possible answer to this change is that there is a slope on the sandstone bedrock on the north bank which would have required a deep cutting, no doubt at great cost. The change of route meant that Brindley had to come up with a bridge over the Irwell – not any old bridge, but one that had to carry water and boats – an aqueduct. The change of plan and route required a Bill to be presented in Parliament for approval, but also it demanded that Brindley show his design for approval to demonstrate that it 16 LIVE IT LOCAL

would not obstruct existing navigation on the River. Now Brindley, although a talented practical engineer, had no formal schooling, and therefore no written designs, but he was nothing if not resourceful. To demonstrate the arches of the aqueduct he used a large round of Cheshire cheese, cut in half and inverted and with a plank on top to represent the canal waterway. To illustrate how it would retain water he produced a lump of clay and worked it into “puddle” to show its retentive property. The plans were approved.

CONSTRUCTION Aqueducts were nothing new; the Romans had built them to provide drinking water to cities over 1700 years before. But a navigable aqueduct was something completely new to Britain and Brindley’s at Barton has since been hailed as one of the “seven wonders of the canal age”. Completed in 1761 it was a massive project by any measure. It was 200 yards long by 12 yards wide and it had three arches, the central one having a span of 63 feet. The canal which it supported was at a height of 39 feet above the Irwell. It was so ambitious that it was celebrated as a major wonder of the day and many said it would never survive.

Local History

James Brindley (1716-72), Canal Engineer

Barton Old Aqueduct and Bridge, Albert Harris 1894, Manchester Art Gallery

So sceptical were many that it is said it gave birth to the popular saying: “...and pigs might fly”. The full expression of the saying is “And pigs might fly, when waters meet in Market Street. But those who doubted were proven very wrong. The canal marched on to Castlefield, in Manchester and terminated close to Market Street. Little did the public know however, how close to calamity the project came. On the day that water was first allowed to enter the aqueduct and fill the channel, one of the arches began to buckle under the weight. Brindley, it is said, succumbed to stress and locked himself away in a room at a Stretford hotel. However, John Gilbert, the Duke’s Agent, was equal to the crisis. He managed to heal the breach and had newly-puddled clay and mortar installed and given time to settle. It was a question of less weight on the haunches of the piers and redistribution to the crown. The basic design was sound and was to last for nearly 140 years.

took off. The Duke’s wealth greatly multiplied and his fame as the “Canal Duke” was assured. The Canal and its aqueduct became rightly famous and the latter was a “must” on the tourist circuit where the novelty of seeing boats travelling in the air on the canal, over other boats sailing the river, was celebrated by writers of the day. Sadly however this great construction was not to last until the present day. It was to be superceded by something even more marvellous... but that is another story. But a memory lingers still. Should you walk to Barton road bridge today from the Eccles side - look to the left. Across a small and pretty “Pocket Park” you can see the original earth and masonry ramp which still carries the Bridgewater Canal, that Brindley built. Well worth inspection.

Written by John Kirwin

INFLUENCE OF THE CANAL The canal and its aqueduct were opened on 17th July 1761, just 15 months after the Act of Parliament was passed that permitted its construction. With all our present day legislation procedures and construction capabilities it is doubtful that the same could be achieved today in less than THREE TIMES AS MUCH ! It was an immediate success. The price of coal plummeted because of the huge cut in transportation cost, industry boomed in the region as a result and the Industrial Revolution PLEASE REMEMBER TO MENTION LIVE IT LOCAL WHEN RESPONDING TO ADVERTS

Happy New Plotting Year! Plotting on the Macmillan Plot...

Around the City...

This is usually the coldest time of year so listen to the weather men and be ready for sudden cold snaps. We use bubble wrap saved from Christmas wrapping around our Olive and Bay trees, they live in pots so can get fatally frozen roots, then we stand the pots on bricks to keep them above ground level.

The Salford allotment Federation continue to work with the council in identifying sites for new plots, progressing those already in the pipeline and improving existing ones.

Once the frost threat is over, we will lay the bubble wrap on the vegetable beds to help warm the soil before we start planting outside. If you don’t have any sheets of plastic you can lay newspapers weighted down with bricks; this will help keep the ground a little warmer. Have you washed last years plant pots? if not, why not do it now and be ready for setting your seeds off in fresh compost and clean pots? Watch out for hidden slugs and snails and get rid of them - they will soon get active when the weather gets warmer and can decimate your seedlings if you miss them! Did you remember to get your tomato, chilli and sweet pepper seeds into compost? We put ours in just after new year along with the aubergine. We haven’t rushed them, just let them settle in and be ready to water them into action when March arrives. We put some nasturtium seeds into compost in a gently heated greenhouse to see if this gives them a head start in spring, I’ll report back about what happens in Summer! Lastly, we’ve kindly been donated some seating by an ex-plotholder. With a bit of TLC and a splash of paint, they will be ready for spring! 20 LIVE IT LOCAL

BLACKLEACH: The plots here are in a very poor state and a firm course of action is needed. The SAF Chairman met the Council Allotment Officer and they agreed that the Council will send more notice letters to plotholders in the hope of rectifying this. SWINTON: The long awaited planning application for the old Swinton Sewage works has now been submitted by Bellway and local residents are very concerned that the site will generate more traffic and congestion problems. The Federation had been hoping to see some allocation of land for allotments on the greenspace but, it appears Bellway don't feel able to accede to this request. POORLOTS, IRLAM: There has been some very bad news about delays in the Planning Inspectors decision making process. It now seems that there will be no decision available until June 2018 and this will mean no new plots being made available until after the main growing season. RECYCLING INITIATIVE: Don (SAF Chairman) is very keen to reduce the use of potable water on allotments everywhere so has asked the Council for as many damaged refuse bins as possible to be used a water butts. So far he has been given 25, and can obtain the taps to convert them at a low cost, so the Macmillan plot now has 8 butts and no need for mains water.

If you are interested in a plot, please contact the SAF secretary carolyn.collins@me.com. Geoff Hamilton Macmillan Cancer Support Volunteer

BOOK GIVEAWAY! SALFORD QUAYS THROUGH TIME

by Paul Hindle Learn about our local history with this fascinating book about Salford Quays. We have 3 books to give away to the first 3 lucky entrants. Salford is separated from neighbouring Manchester by the River Irwell. It has a long independent history and was home to the docks area, opened in 1894 as the terminus of the Manchester Ship Canal. The docks slowly declined after the Second World War, but have been regenerated, first as Salford Quays and then as Media City. The dock basins and other features remain but are now surrounded by housing, shops, and the Lowry Centre. In the midst of now demolished dense terraced housing there is also the oddity of the medieval Ordsall Hall. Alongside the buildings, the old and new generations of trams carried (and still carry) the city dwellers and workers to and from the docks and quays.
