Get ready to be transported back in time! Our friend Connie Beal from the Trent Port Historical Society has dug deep into their archives and found some fun Spring moments to share with us

These gems give us a glimpse into Quinte West's past and help us discover the stories that make our hometown special.

A woman chooses her "Easter bonnet" in the hat department at the newly opened downtown Zeller's in 1960. Zeller's would later move to the Trenton Town Centre and Giant Tiger would occupy this store. When Zeller's closed at Trenton Town Centre, Giant Tiger once again moved to the same location.

April 1971 A group of students from Dufferin School and Stockdale Public School visited the farm of Mr. Paul Heissler in Stockdale. The students learned about the tapping and boiling of maple syrup and enjoyed some maple syrup candy.

1963 Easter Sunday began at 5:30 am on Mount Pelion when the traditional sunrise service was held by members of King Street United Church.

1966 Kindergarten pupils at Marmora Street Public School made an Easter theme display for the front display board of their school.

1983

Easter window display at Gayle's Singer Sewing Centre. The display attracted the attention of many passing pedestrians as it featured a total of nine live rabbits. The store was located at 42 Front Street. Across the street was Eden's Furniture which is now the site of The Grind and Vine.

1988

Students from St. Peter's School presented Easter favors to Pat Marshall Lafferty of the Trenton Memorial Hospital Auxiliary. The favors were used to decorate the hospital's lunch trays.

1971

Seven year old Paul Chambers was selected as Trenton's "Timmy" for the Easter Seal Campaign conducted by the Rotary Club. Paul was presented with a ceremonial first cheque by Mayor Duncan McDonald. Looking on is Rotary president Dan Senik.

Baked Brie with Yellow Peppe J lly

Ingredients

Yellow Pepper Jelly:

1.5 cups sweet yellow peppers, finely diced

3 cups sugar

¾ cups apple cider vinega

1 pouch liquid pectin 85 ml

Directions

In a large stainless steel or enamel pot, combine diced peppers, sugar and vinegar

Over high heat, bring to a boil, stirring constantly, and boil for one full minute

Stir in liquid pectin, bring back to a boil, and boil hard for one full minute

Remove from heat and ladle into hot, sterilized jars.

Put on lids and twist screw bands just finger tight

Process in boiling water bath 10 minutes

Allow to cool, in which time you should hear the pop of the sealing jars, and your jelly will thicken

This recipe will make about half a dozen 4 oz, or three 8 oz, (or ½ pint) jars

It’s important to sterilize your jars: Wash them in hot, soapy water, rinse well, and then boil for 10 minutes.

Keep the water that you sterilized your jars in boiling so that you can process your filled jars in it

The diced peppers in your jelly will float to the top of the jars. To keep this from happening and suspend them throughout the jelly, turn the jars upside down and then upright a few times during the cooling time.

Assembling

Set oven to 375 degrees.

Score the top of your Brie cheese by slicing lengthwise every inch then width wise every inch approximately 1/2” into cheese. You should create a grid pattern by doing this.

Take your wheel of Brie cheese and place on top of your round loaf of sourdough bread. Cut the bread by tracing around the Brie with your knife.

Carefully scoop out the bread until the wheel of cheese fits inside perfectly and is level with the top of the bread. Add some fresh thyme and rosemary and a 1/2c of your yellow pepper jelly on top.

Bake for 20 min.

Remove from the oven, pull pieces of bread off to dip in Brie and enjoy!

STEP INTO SPRING WITH QUINTE CONSERVATION

Spring is a great time to enjoy the outdoors The weather is mild and pleasant, days are long, and wildlife i very active and easy to spot. Quinte Conservation has several conservatio areas that we welcome you to enjoy Potter’s Creek and Sidney

Conservation Areas are located in Quinte West and offer visitors an excellent nature experience In this article, we’ll look at what you can see these two locations this spring, and some tips to make your experience more enjoyable

WILDFLOWERS

The arrival of spring brings out some of the Quinte region’s most beautiful native wildflowers The first flowers to bloom are violets. Around mid-April, these little flowers start appearing on the forest floor, ready to take advantage of the sun.

Despite the name “violet” they come in a variety of colours including violet, light purple, white, and even yellow!

In May, we get even showier flowers, like bloodroot, yellow trout lilies, and of course the iconic trillium.

You can find two kinds of trilliums at our conservation areas. The white trillium (our provincial flower) and red trilliums. The white trillium has a sweet smell, to attract pollinators looking for nectar, but the red trillium smells stinky, to attract flies that think it’s rotting food and trick them into spreading its pollen

As beautiful as they are, we ask visitors to not pick the wildflowers. Many of them are sensitive to picking and can be killed or take many years to grow back Please enjoy them with your eyes, nose, and camera!.

WILDLIFE

Animals are also becoming more active in the spring. Many species are coming out of hibernation or migrating back into the area from further south. At Potter’s Creek, several species of birds return in March and April, including the red-winged black bird. This species can be seen around the constructed wetlands or along the bay of Quinte shoreline. The males can be heard singing loudly to claim a territory and attract a mate In May and June, they will make nests close to the water and raise their chicks.

Spring also brings out hibernating insects, including several butterflies, which you might see as early as the end of March!!

The mourning cloak butterfly is one harbinger of spring that you might find at Potter’s Creek or Sidney Conservation Areas. This butterfly overwinters in tree hollows or amongst fallen leaves and comes out when the weather warms up They can be seen flying around, sunning themselves, or feeding on sap running from tree bark or branches.

Unfortunately for us, the warm spring weather also brings out ticks Ticks are small invertebrates that feed on animal blood and can transmit Lyme disease to humans. There are some simple things you can do to avoid a tick bite.

PROTECTION MEASURES INCLUDE:

Wearing long pants and socks

Applying bug spray to your legs and ankles. Keeping yourself and any pets on the trail and out of dense vegetation and leaf litter

Checking your whole body for ticks after your walk..

Don’t let ticks spoil your walk! Stay tick safe when you’re out for a more enjoyable experience

TRAIL CONDITIONS

Warm spring days and sunshine make us want to hit the trails, but remember to bring a good pair of footwear that you don’t mind getting dirty! Thawing ground, melting snow, and spring rain conspire to make many sections of trail muddy and sometimes slippery. Potter’s Creek Conservation Area is especially prone to this, as the soil there holds onto a lot of water. Wearing a good pair of rubber boots or hiking boots can make your walk in the spring much more enjoyable until the ground dries.

PRACTICE GOOD CONSERVATION AREA ETIQUETTE

Last, but not least, please remember to practice good conservation area etiquette. Take nothing but pictures and leave nothing but footprints. Stay on marked trails to avoid damaging sensitive habitats and species, and do not remove any natural items. For your pet’s safety, please keep them leashed to avoid conflicts with wildlife, contact with invasive or hazardous plants, and for the courtesy of other trail users. Our conservation areas are open daily from sunrise to sunset.

Potter's Creek won the 2022 vote for Best Trail and Best Geocaching Location.

Check out the our reel and you'll see why

We hope that you enjoy your visit to our areas this spring!

Local Authors Invite Kids on a y

“Lucy thought of herself as openminded. Her family was always telling her that she had a very active imagination. She believed frogs could really be princes and that animals in the woods could be her friends, but this was beyond what she could have possibly hoped was real. It was as though she had never really seen anything before.”

Tidy Planet Adventures

Join ten-year-old Lucy Dodd as she embarks on a magical adventure where she meets new friends and learns the importance of taking care of the planet

The Tidy Planet Adventures is the first book in a series by sisters Meaghan and Emily Gibbs. Meaghan is a resident of Quinte West, Emily lives in the town of Coaticook in Quebec. Meaghan and Emily both love to write. Living in different provinces they found that sharing their love of writing by mail and through email, brought them closer. The first instalment of the Tidy Planet Adventures was written in a notebook they sent back and forth through the mail. Recently, they have been working on the second book in the series, Lucy and the Fairy Queen, which will be released this spring.

The books are a family affair and labours of love. They used pictures of family and friends for the characters in the books. The characters in the book are even named for family and friends and hidden in the book as little Easter eggs. The original story started out based on fairy stories their grandmother told them when they were growing up but quickly evolved. The characters took on lives and voices of their own. Soon enough, the enchanted forest in the story came to life and seemed as real as any forest they had ever been in.

Local Inspiration

To combine the magic of the story to the beauty of nature, Meaghan and Emily chose to illustrate their books with pictures taken of different forests and spots in nature that are special to them. Some of the local areas featured in the books are views of the Trent River, Bain Park and a beautiful weeping willow in Zwicks Park.

Teaching a Love of Nature

In the process of writing the Tidy Planet Adventures and taking pictures for the books, nature took on an important part of the story. Nature is a main character in the book and taking care of the planet is an ongoing theme throughout the books They address the problem of pollution and keeping our forests and water clean, that we all have to do our part.

The sisters wanted to share more than just their family stories with others. They want to encourage families to read together, pass down their own family stories and spend time outside together. Any time spent together as a family is time well spent.

The Tidy Planet Adventures is available on Amazon or locally at Rollin’ Oats Coffee Shop. Lucy and the Fairy Queen will be available Spring, 2023.

HOW TO START YOUR FIRST FAMILY VEGETABLE GARDEN

With the continuously rising cost of groceries, families are looking for innovative ways to obtain healthy food options Family gardening is increasing in popularity and is a wonderful way to meet their nutritional needs.

Growing your own fruits and vegetables can be an activity for all ages and it doesn’t need to be an expensive hobby or require a lot of space

Resources for Beginner Gardeners

Seed, soil, sun, and water. That does not sound too complicated. For beginners, there are many gardening resources available at the Quinte West Public Library, gardening clubs, social media platforms, your green thumb neighbours and at your local garden centre. The Quinte West Gardens – Growing Community is a friendly and welcoming organization that would be pleased to assist new and experienced gardeners with their questions and concerns.

The garden is in full bloom and harvesting has begun.

Engaging Children in Gardening

Gardening can start out as simple as children sowing beans in recycled plastic containers on a windowsill.

As their little bean sprouts grow, so will their interest in the magic of gardening. This is a terrific opportunity to engage their curiosity and wonder, to encourage young minds to grow along with their own individual plants.

Container Gardening for Limited Spaces

Container gardening could be the next step. Inexpensive containers can be used to grow vegetables such as milk jugs, two-litre pop bottles with the tops cut off, five gallon plastic buckets, recycling boxes and plastic kiddie pools.

You can even use a plastic bag of soil if space is an issue. Peppers, kale, lettuce, onions, radishes, spinach, and tomatoes grow well in containers.

Companion Planting for a Healthy Garden

If you have an existing flowerbed, consider making space for some companion planting. Growing beefriendly flowers in the same bed as vegetables is an easy and natural way to keep plants healthy, attract native pollinators and beneficial insects.

Calendula grow nicely in a vegetable garden and you can be sure it will appear year after year. Marigolds are great companions for tomatoes and you can plant hot peppers in flower baskets.

Not all flowers pair well with all vegetables – do your research!

Renting Garden Plots & Supporting the Community

Some local municipalities provide seasonal garden plots for families to rent. Not only does this provide the accessibility of fresh fruits and vegetables, it also promotes a healthy lifestyle and encourages relationships

The Quinte West Gardens – Growing Community grow and provide fruits, vegetables and herbs to the local food bank and numerous community kitchens. This season, they decided to increase the number of raised beds for families to rent at a very reasonable cost to address the need for affordable food.

This decision reflects what this organization represents – growing community! Apart from the raised garden beds, they offer walking paths, a children’s play area, an orchard, a river rock garden bed with seating, picnic tables, a space for reflection and much more.

A group of Quinte West Gardens - Growing Community volunteers in front of the 'Community" mural that was painted by well-known visual artist Christopher Bennett.
Gertrude Jekyll says,
“The love of gardening is a seed once sown that never dies.”

The Personal Benefits of Gardening

The benefits of family gardening extend beyond the satisfaction of growing your own food and healthy eating. The sights, sounds and smells of being in nature promote relaxation.

Gardening provides exercise, vitamin D and improves your mood. Being in the garden allows you to unplug from social media and experience gratitude and achievement.

The Quinte West Gardens - Growing Community is a registered non-profit organization governed by a Board of Directors with the help of dedicated volunteers and garden helpers. They are supported by a long list of generous community partners who donate funds and supplies.

Everyone is welcome to join as a member or who is happy to assist with the numerous garden tasks.
