A Letter from the Headmaster The Revd. Dr. D. Stuart Dunnan Lent 4 (March 27, 2020) Dear Friends, I want to thank you all for your understanding and generous support as we respond as a school and as a community to the developing novel coronavirus pandemic.

I gather from Mr. Batson and my faculty colleagues that our online learning curriculum is off and running, and I can see their visible relief and renewed sense of purpose now that they are teaching again and reconnecting with their students.

Personally, I miss our students, as times like these mean that my days are filled with conversations and correspondence with adults, and I have lost my usual opportunities over the course of the day and during the week to interact with teenagers: chapel and meals and games and chats in my office, the occasional movie night or off-campus outing, and milk and cookies with my advisees on Monday nights after study hall. I miss their enthusiasm and lively sense of humor, their resilience and optimism, and their honesty and vulnerability, which is in truth the great gift of boarding school to those of us who have chosen this life and profession, especially at Saint James.

This is particularly true in the spring when the flowers are beginning to bloom in our gardens and on our trees, when the grass is green again, and usually our boys' and girls' lacrosse teams, and girls' and boys' tennis teams, and softball and baseball teams are back outside again – playing in the open for all of us to watch and cheer for them, rejoicing when they win and sorrowing when they lose. And it will come as no surprise to any of you that I really miss the choir and our moving and beautiful liturgies in the Chapel, especially with Holy Week approaching and Easter, all of which will now be quietly and very privately celebrated this year without acolytes and servers and readers and ushers, but only the safely dispersed and greatly diminished remnant of the faithful still living on campus.

Surely, the one gift of this strange new experience for all of us is that we have been forced to observe a severe and solemn Lent, deprived of all the gifts we take so much for granted, the many and extraordinary blessings that we enjoy at Saint James: the beauty of our campus, the joy of our gatherings and fellowship, the privilege of teaching and learning in the same room together as a class, or coaching and improving on the same field as a team, on the same stage as a cast, as artists in the art room, or just "hanging out" as friends in the dorm. I feel particularly for our sixth formers, who have loved their time here and are an especially loyal and cheerful cohort. I so very much hope that they can return and that we can save our last marking period together, but we shall see . . .

Still, the truth may be that the lessons we are learning now are good for us, and here let me offer just a few: we should be more mindful of our blessings as we are enjoying them; we are not in control of our lives as much as we assume and want to believe; suffering and death are nearer to us than we like to imagine; and fear can overwhelm us – if we fail to believe. I always tell our students that the gifts of faith are gratitude and perspective, generosity and courage.

So, this is what I offer you in this time of Lent, of fasting and penitence, of prayer and self-denial: the promise of Easter to come, of life after death.

Saint James School Community Carries On When SJS students left for Spring Break on February 28, they had no idea they would be saying goodbye for more than just two weeks. With the outbreak of the novel coronavirus, the campus is closed through at least May 4 and our online learning program began on March 23.

Chances are that when you receive this magazine, we will already know whether we'll be able to reconvene on campus and close out the year together or if we'll continue with online classes for the remainder of the school year.

The resiliency of the SJS community has been remarkable. The learning continues, it just doesn't look

like what we would expect. Class is in session, but online.

Our students are likely in sweatpants instead of school dress. We're teaching chemistry with virtual experiments and practicing conversational Spanish over Microsoft Teams. In an unfortunate situation, we're making this work with creativity, dedication, and grit. We're keeping this community connected and learning together.

| around campus | Thanksgiving Tour of Europe During the Thanksgiving break, two faculty members, Mr. and Mrs. DeWalt, took 14 Saint James students on a tour of Europe. They traveled to Prague, Vienna, Ljubljana, and Venice. The students enjoyed tours of each city and roaming around getting to know the distinct culture of each country. While each person on the trip has a favorite memory, they can all agree that the sights and delicacies were amazing.

Lessons and Carols On December 14 and 15, Saint James School celebrated the Christmas season with services of Lessons and Carols, a beautiful holiday tradition that includes readings, reflection, songs, and prayer. Each year, members of the Saint James community come from far and wide to join us for this memorable service.

Model United Nations Conference Over Winter Long Weekend (January 31-February 2), Saint James School Model United Nations (SJSMUN) sent six delegates to American University’s seventh annual Model United Nations Conference (AmeriMUNC VII).

Laurelle Maubert '21, Sarut Chamnanraj '20, Michael Yang '20, Ronni Ireland '22, Beatrice Imarhiagbe '22, and Chaltu Watkins '22 joined more than 900 other delegates from high schools across the country and around the world. It was a wonderful opportunity for our students to experience an authentic forum for international relations. Maubert won her committee’s thirdhighest honor!

SJS Robotics Team Finishes in Top Five of National Competition In its first year, the SJS Robotics Team placed in the top five of a national competition endorsed by NASA. Robotics was offered this year as a winter sport option for upperform students, and was comprised of four sixth formers (Evan Fulmer, Bill Li, Patrick Nguyen, and Leiny Ruggiero) and one fifth former (Leo Cucuzzella).

Led by Dr. Ian Brauner, the team met in the SJS FAB Lab every day during the athletics period from late November to the end of February.

“Robotics” might be a bit of a misnomer as they hadn’t decided on the project they would work on for the duration of their season. All of the members were experienced working in the FAB Lab, and it was Ruggiero who was searching the maker site Instructables.com and came across their eventual project.

“We were trying to find a competition to do that would involve all of our interests, and a lot of us are interested in space,” she said. “I saw this contest on the Instructables site and it fit within our timeframe so it worked perfectly.”

The Instructables competition was called “Growing Beyond Earth Maker Contest” and was presented

by Fairchild Tropical Botanic Garden who works with NASA to help improve food production for long duration space travel. Together, they asked makers across America to submit new designs for gardening systems to be used on spacecraft.

Aboard spacecraft, plant-growing environments must be small, placing limits on the amount of food that can be produced. The contest was asking for new designs and strategies 8

to make better use of the available growing space. Teams were asked to design, build, and test a system that uses 3D growing space efficiently to maximize food production.

One key point that was made in the contest parameters is that there is no up or down in microgravity, but plants will grow toward the light. Cucuzzella said with that detail in mind the group started brainstorming, knowing that a taller plant might reach the light and block it to other plants.

“We were trying to figure out how we could reflect light back under the taller plants," he said.

"So basically, we just went through a lot of brainstorming. We were first thinking about making a spiral pipe and then trying to put plants in there, but it didn’t have enough growing room for the plants."

Ruggiero said they went through four or five different versions before

deciding on a concept, and even after the main frame was built they still ended up tweaking the design.

Ruggiero, who is also very involved in the arts at SJS, said it was that creativity and thinking outside the box that helped the group.

“Quite a few people in Robotics have art backgrounds so the creative design from art and knowing how to do structural design helped with the grow box because the two are very related,” she said.

Cucuzzella said the team decided to use aluminum foil to solve the light issue.

"Each row of plants had its own light source and then the walls of the box were coated in aluminum so that way light could be reflected off the sides of the box," he said. "So, if there was a plant that was taller, the light could still reach the smaller plants."

was called ModQuad as the idea was to create a fully modular, space-efficient system for growing plants. The main structure is made up of hollow pillars and attachment cubes at the corners; all of which were assembled using laser-cut pieces. Autodesk Fusion 360 and 3D-printed components proved to be central to their design process; the tools available to the team in the FAB Lab gave them the ability to create the components they needed and designed during the development of ModQuad. It was access to these FAB Lab tools that both Ruggiero and Cucuzzella think helped put the team in the top five of the competition.

“Quite a few competitors only had a CAD (Computer-Aided Design) file and not the actual prototype so we were hoping we would do well in the competition,” Ruggiero said.

An important part of the process was also learning about plants and how they grow indoors.

"We researched what efforts NASA has already done to grow plants in space and the plants they’ve already experimented with and that’s how we landed with zinnias," Cucuzzella said. "NASA had already been doing experiments because they are both edible and space efficient."

Ultimately, the team’s design earned

them a place in the top five of the high school division. Judges for the contest included NASA engineers and botanists, and the winning proposals will be considered for implementation on future NASA missions. The top five winners received a $500 gift card and an Instructables prize pack including NASA swag and a qualifying spot in the Fairchild final competition. The team will have a chance to refine their design and then resubmit to go up against the other top five winners from the high school, college, and professional divisions.

Griffin Almany '20 was one of three local students recognized as meritorious youths by the Washington County Board of Commissioners in February.

Washington County periodically recognizes local youths based on their scholastic achievement, leadership qualities, and community service or other contributions to their school or community.

Griffin is a sixth form student from Fairplay, MD who has attended Saint James since the second form. He is a standout member of the soccer, wrestling, and lacrosse teams, and also serves as an Admissions Tour Guide. Congratulations, Griffin!

Laurelle Maubert '21 Receives 2020 Maryland Women of Tomorrow Award Fifth former Laurelle “Elle” Maubert was one of five high school students from across the state to receive the 2020 Maryland Women of Tomorrow Award. The Maryland Women of Tomorrow Awards was established in 1997 to recognize and to honor extraordinary young women who have demonstrated a commitment to leadership, community service, and academic excellence. Nominations are received and reviewed by an independent committee that select the honorees.

Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the award ceremony was moved to August where she will then receive her citation from the governor in Annapolis.

Elle was nominated by Steve Lachut, Dean of Students, for her excellent work both in the classroom and in the community. In Saint James’ demanding environment, Elle earns Academic High Honors while also being a member of the cross country, dance, and lacrosse teams; writing for the Jacobite (student newspaper); and serving as a Tour Guide and as co-leader of the Model United Nations Club.

In addition to her many school obligations, Elle has served as a community advocate. She cofounded the Frederick County Chapter of Students Demand Action, where she has helped to lead local advocacy initiatives for common sense legislation. Elle had the honor of presenting the keynote address at the Frederick Women’s March in 2019. She also hosted a supply drive for victims of domestic violence at Heartly House; held a tree-planting ceremony in honor of victims of gun violence in Frederick County; convinced Frederick to join Mayors Against Illegal Guns; and organized an “orange out” for community faith organizations. Elle was honored as the Pax Christi Metro DC-Baltimore’s Peacemaker of the Year in 2018.

While it was difficult at times to maintain such a busy schedule, Elle said she is grateful to be part of such a supportive community.

“I’m thankful to Saint James for their flexibility. My teachers worked with me when I had to go to Annapolis and I always felt supported,” she said.

Elle also received an award at a recent Model UN conference.

Elle began her advocacy efforts after the Parkland High School shooting, starting with writing to her state representatives and getting more involved as time went on.

“I kept seeing mass shooting after mass shooting, and it made me realize I needed to be more involved,” she said. “I wanted to be able to look back and say that I, along with many others, did something about it.”

Elle is currently working with the student-led group March for Our Lives on a committee that lobbies for gun-sense legislation in the Maryland General Assembly. They are supporting the Child Access Prevention bill which would ensure the safe storage of firearms by adults if there are children in the home.

Elle said the group’s attention will next turn to the elections and keeping gun-sense legislators in office.

“We’ll speak with candidates who are running and make sure they know that if they’re elected, we’ll be working with them on those issues,” she said.

Exploring BEAUTIFUL BELIZE

Over spring break, Mr. McDonald and Mrs. Marsh-McDonald led a group of eight students to Belize where they explored Mayan ruins, went cave tubing, zip lining, and more!

The group made a stop at the Belize Zoo. The Belize Zoo only houses animals that have been injured, sick, or were once used for movies or documentaries.

On the last full day in Belize, the group boated out to the world’s second largest barrier reef. During one of the three different snorkeling sessions they came across this sea turtle.

One afternoon the group had a unique opportunity to visit a local K-8th grade school. They learned about the education system in Belize, listened to a signing of the national anthem, and got to see inside a 2nd grade classroom. After that the group split up to play basketball and soccer with the local children.

Hiking THE CAMINO DE SANTIAGO

This was a common sight along the Camino. The walk itself varied – sometimes on gravel, sometimes on paths like this, sometimes on dirt trails through the woods, and sometimes along busy roads – always keeping things interesting!

Following the Way of St. James An adventurous group of upper-form students led by Mr. and Mrs. Lachut spent spring break hiking a portion of the Camino de Santiago in Spain. The Camino de Santiago (the Way of St. James) is a large network of ancient pilgrim routes stretching across Europe and coming together at the tomb of St. James (Santiago in Spanish) in Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain. The group began their trip exploring the city of Porto, Portugal and then joined the Portuguese Coastal Route of the Camino in front of a 12th-century monastery in Oía, Spain. In total, the group walked about 100 miles over seven days, staying in hotels in cities along their route.

Buen Camino

Dan King '98 Reflects on Spiritual Trek This past September I had the great fortune and privilege to walk over 500 miles across northern Spain along the Camino de Santiago, or the Way of St. James. The Camino, as it is often called, is an ancient Christian pilgrimage to the city of Santiago de Compostela in Galicia, the lush green part of Spain that sits just north and east of Portugal. It is the third most popular Christian pilgrimage site after Jerusalem and Rome. According to legend, the apostle St. James the Greater (sorry folks, not “our” St. James) preached the gospel in both the Holy Land and later in modern-day Spain.

When he returned to Jerusalem, he was martyred by Herod Agrippa.

What exactly happened after that is a matter of conjecture, but popular legend has it that his followers recovered his decapitated body, and with the help of miracles and angels, made their way by sea to the northwestern coast of Iberia, where they landed and a stone encased his remains. These remains were later taken inland to the small city of Compostela, from the Latin “field of stars,” already an important place in ancient Celtic traditions where it was said the souls of the dead gathered to follow the sun across the sea. It would be nearly 800 years before these remains were “rediscovered” by a local hermit and entombed at the site of the Cathedral that now sits at the center of the city. St. James would be elevated as the patron saint of Spain in medieval times, and became immensely popular with

Christians throughout the Iberian peninsula during the Reconquista.

How these early origins translate to the pilgrimage of today is a long story. The reasons for undertaking such a journey vary as widely today as they did over 1000 years ago.

In 2019, almost 350,000 people reached Santiago and received their “compostela,” or certificate proving that they had walked at least the last 100 km to the city. For me, I had been thinking about making this pilgrimage for almost 10 years, after having seen the excellent film, The Way, starring Martin Sheen and written and directed by his son, Emilio Estevez. In the film, Emilio plays an estranged son who essentially gives up his fancy job to

walk the Camino. In the first five minutes of the film, he has a tragic accident and dies in the Pyrenees.

Sheen plays his father, who travels to collect his son’s remains and return them home. Once there, though, Sheen becomes determined to complete his son’s pilgrimage and scatter his remains along the way, meeting fascinating characters and discovering himself as well. This was my first introduction to the Camino, and I fell in love with the idea of it instantly.

I came to discover that I had many connections to the Camino. Daniel is the name of Estevez’s character (a fact I didn’t remember when I first showed the movie to my mother before starting my trip!). Our school

| around campus | obviously was a big one; it wouldn’t be until a bit later that I discovered it was the “wrong” St. James, but nevertheless my connection to the school made me feel connected to the Camino somehow. My mother’s side of my family, maiden name “Ortiz,” is actually from Galicia. The more I learned about it, the more my heart ached to go. But taking 5-6 weeks to walk across Spain isn’t an easy proposition, so this idea stayed in the back of my mind for many years.

Fast forward to about March of last year. I would be turning 40 in September and was not at all looking forward to that. I was, and still am, dealing with the death of my father, who passed away a few years ago from cancer. Maybe there was a bit of a “mid-life crisis” there, but I had this deep-seeded desire to just get away from it all for a little while, and the

Camino came to mind. Being a freelance tour guide has a lot of perks, and one of them is the ability to just randomly take as much time as I want off from work. I thought if I didn’t take this opportunity now, then I might never get a chance. So, I began planning for a six-week slow walk along The French Way of the Camino, the oldest and most traditional of the seven most well-established pilgrimage routes leading to Santiago.

| around campus | miles, focused on helping pilgrims, and it reminded me a lot of the school. Everyone is charting their own course, just like at Saint James, but there is this amazing support system always within reach, no matter what happens. Food is a central and reinforcing part of this community, just as it is at Saint James; albergues will often host group dinners, an incredible opportunity to learn about other pilgrims and share the day’s stories, and restaurants often have “pilgrim dinners” which are much earlier than the typical 10:00 p.m. Spanish dinner-time. There is also an extraordinary honor system at work on the Camino. Some albergues are “donativos,” meaning you donate what you can to stay there. There are often people who set up food tables along stretches where there aren’t many towns, incredible spreads of homemade food with nothing but a cup out to ask for donations. In the town of Irache,

there is even a free wine fountain!

Yes. Free wine. The monks of Irache stock it with up to 1000 liters of their wine a day, and pilgrims may take what they like. Remarkably, this does not turn into a bacchanal. This spirit of generosity and kindness permeates everything about the Camino, and I think our school’s community as well.

I arrived in Santiago after about five weeks of walking. I purposely did not plan much on my walk, choosing instead to let fate take me where it might. Interestingly enough, I arrived quite accidentally at the Cathedral on October 4th, which I came to learn was the Feast of St. Francis. Though St. Francis probably didn’t actually write the prayer I had kept with me on my journey, it still felt like a powerful connection for me. The prayer ends, “O Master, let me not seek as much to be consoled as to console, to be understood as to understand, to be loved as to love;

for it is in giving that one receives, it is in self-forgetting that one finds, it is in pardoning that one is pardoned, it is in dying that one is raised to eternal life.” I discovered a lot about myself on the Camino, lessons that echo much of this prayer, and I find that I am still learning its lessons months later and probably years into the future. Though technically the “wrong” St. James, there are many parallels between my experiences on the Camino and my experiences as a student. I highly encourage current students and alums to find a way to walk this walk, and find your own connections. (Special thanks to Fr. Dunnan and, of course, Ms. Sherman who first introduced me to Spain on a spring break trip and whose Spanish lessons somehow stuck with me over 20 years later!)

Why I Teach at an Episcopal School The Revd. Brandt Montgomery, Saint James Chaplain, wrote a piece for the Mid-Atlantic Episcopal School Association (MAESA) newsletter in which he reflects on how just one year at an Episcopal school as a young man set him on a path for life.

Twenty-two years ago, I enrolled as a 7th-grade student at Saint Peter’s Episcopal Day School, opened by the Episcopal parish under the same patron in my hometown of Talladega, Alabama. Unlike most Episcopal schools, most of the students at EDS (which numbered a little over 20) were Episcopalians, with me and several others coming from other Christian traditions.

Although it was only in its first year of operation, the school’s academic standards were high and the faculty’s expectations were demanding, all with intentions for growth, both intellectually and for the whole of the person. I only attended EDS for one year, but I look back on with great fondness, for the academic and personal standards I was exposed to were the beginning of the instilling within me values synonymous with Episcopal school education.

Spiritually, EDS was my introduction to Anglican Christianity. The liturgy was structured and calm. The music was traditional and stately. The prayers were short, yet heartwarming, coming from this book called “The Book of Common Prayer.” The more that academic year progressed, the more I grew to love Anglican Christian worship. My growing fondness for Anglican Christianity was the impetus of me developing a closer relationship with Jesus and praying more. And even though EDS’s chapel services were compulsory, they became the best and most important time to me, drawing me closer to Jesus and him becoming the best friend I have ever known. Because of those EDS 20

chapels 22 years ago, I embarked on the journey of “intentional Christianity.”

As one of many past students fortunate to receive the benefits of an Episcopal school education, I feel humbled, privileged, and honored to be in my sixth year in such ministry as a priest-educator. What drew me to my current ministry at Saint James School in Maryland was its foundation as an Episcopal school steeped in the high church, sacramental tradition of the Oxford Movement. As one deeply influenced by the Oxford Movement fathers and mothers and Anglo-Catholicism’s liturgical heritage, I felt God calling me to aid Saint James in its mission to raise up men and women of virtue who can be “leaders for good in the world.” Their mission reflects that of my own to proclaim Jesus Christ in my preaching and teaching, sacramental care, and pastoral care through Anglo-Catholicism’s liturgical heritage. As once described

by James Barrett Kerfoot, Saint James School’s first Headmaster, I feel like I am in “the flower of my years” and look forward to doing God’s work among the faculty and students of Saint James School for hopefully many years to come.

Yet, Saint James’s Anglo-Catholic heritage is a particular expression of the many ways in this world God is praised. Though Episcopal schools should honor the tradition upon which they stand, never should they convey their beliefs upon others in a forceful way. Just as Saint Peter’s Episcopal Day School did for me all those years ago, all Episcopal schools should allow space for each person to discern for themselves what Christianity is about and who Jesus is to them.

I am an Episcopal priest-educator, firstly, because I share with all Episcopal schools and educators the

goal of helping foster environments that are faithful to their Christian heritage, yet also are inclusive, inspiring, and nurturing of people from various backgrounds. I live this out in my life and priestly ministry by engaging with those things that have always been taught by Christians while, leaving space open for those of differing opinions, encouraging open dialogue, and respecting the place one is at in his/her life.

The call that not only I share as an Episcopal priest, but all engaged in Episcopal education do is to offer safe spaces that are both encouraging and nurturing of all the students we teach and serve.

But the ultimate reason for my priest-educator vocation is Jesus.

It was at an Episcopal school that I came to the realization that Jesus loves me and that God’s love is larger than all of that of humanity put together. Through the love and support I was shown as an Episcopal school student 22 years ago, I realized that Jesus Christ came “that [we] may have life and have it abundantly.” (John 10.10) This is our God who is, has been, and always will be with us.

I count myself glad and fortunate to be an Episcopal priest-educator.

I pray for all my fellow Episcopal school educators, that through their ministries all who they teach will see the value of doing good in this world.

SJS Choir Sings at MAESA Evensong On Sunday, February 9, the SJS Chapel Choir joined more than 370 students from ten upper school choirs at Washington National Cathedral to sing in the Mid-Atlantic Episcopal School Association (MAESA) annual service of Choral Evensong alongside the Cathedral Choir. It was a beautiful service and a remarkable opportunity for our students!

Play Day Recital Some of our talented students taking private music instruction performed at an informal Play Day recital before spring break. It was the first time performing for some of these students, and all of the musicians did a fantastic job putting their skills on display!

SJS Visual Arts on Display Ryan Scott '22 had a color pencil drawing selected by the Maryland Art Education Association (MAEA) to be on display at the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore. He was recognized at a reception in December along with SJS art teacher Mr. Jeremy McDonald, who was celebrated for Excellence in Art Education as a Career Art Educator by MAEA at the reception. Mr. McDonald also had his work selected for display at the 10th Annual Washington County Art Educator's Show.

On January 23 at the Washington County High School Juried Art Show reception Olivia Riser '20 earned first place in the painting category for her watercolor, “Trust the Rust.” Ryan Scott '22 earned third place in the drawing category for his color pencil drawing, “Benny.”

The Saint James tradition of having our youngest students involved in theater stretches back many years and is a bonding experience as they challenge and support each other throughout the process.

Mary Poppins

The magic and mystic of Mary Poppins, this year’s winter musical, blew in with the wind to the Kellam Auditorium stage the weekend of February 21 and 22. Based on the children’s books by P.L. Travers and the 1964 Disney film, the famous nanny, umbrella in hand, arrives to help the Banks’ family at their London home.

The production included much-loved musical numbers such as “A Spoonful of Sugar,” “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” “Chim Chim-Cher-ee,” and “Let’s Go Fly a Kite.”

Alli Jacobson ’21 starred as Mary and noted the character development was a group effort, with Ms. Nicole Ruark (choreography), Ms. Charlotte La Nasa and Mrs. Melanie Regan (codirectors) helping her learn Mary’s mannerisms, accent, and singing.

The London accents, in particular, from the cockney of Bert to the upper class of Mr. Banks, were a

challenge for the cast to learn but added an authenticity to the final production.

“I always considered myself to have a good British accent just joking around with family and friends, but when it actually came time to do it, I was hearing Jack [Weisgerber, who played Bert] with the cockney and my vowels and accent were too close to that, so I had to switch it because there are a lot of variations of British accents,” said Jimmy James ’21 who played George Banks.

Alli said the cast also spent a lot of time practicing outside of rehearsals, particularly on nailing down the tricky “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” but she’s proud of how the show came together.

“Before tech week we were all really nervous, but the more we rehearsed it, it all just came together and we were really happy with the final product,” she said.

Admiral James L. Holloway, III '39 Laid to Rest at Naval Academy Admiral James L. Holloway, III, Saint James School Class of 1939, was laid to rest on December 18, 2019 at the Naval Academy Cemetery after a full honors military funeral at the Naval Academy Chapel. Father Dunnan presided and gave the homily, the SJS Chapel Choir sang, the SJS sacristans served, and Senior Prefect Will Hertel read from the Epistle of Saint James. Wrestling teams from Saint James and the Naval Academy were in attendance, as well as many SJS administrators and trustees.

Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Gilday and Naval Academy Superintendent Vice Adm. Sean Buck spoke at the service, and retired Adm. Bobby Inman, who served with Adm. Holloway on the SJS Board of Trustees,

offered personal reminiscences.

The Naval Academy Honor Guard led a procession from the chapel to the cemetery, where Adm. Holloway received a 19-gun salute and a flyover by F-18 jets in a missing man formation. A flag was presented to Mrs. Dabney R. Holloway, Adm. Holloway's wife of 77 years, as well as his daughters, Jane Holloway and Lucy Lyon, and grandson Graham Eynon-Holloway.

May he rest in peace and may light perpetual shine upon him.

Admiral James L. Holloway, III By the Revd. Dr. D. Stuart Dunnan In the Naval Academy Chapel 18 December 2019

"Count it all joy, my brethren, when you meet various trials, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness.

And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing." (James 1.2-3) In nomine ...

I first met Jim Holloway in the spring of 1992, when he drove up to my parents' house in his Jeep and picked me up to drive me to Saint James School. I was a finalist to be headmaster, but was still the Chaplain of Lincoln College, Oxford and only 33 years old, maybe even 32. It depends if I visited in February or March, and I can't remember.

In any case, I was way too young and not a likely candidate, but the prospect was an interesting one, as I was from Maryland, and Saint James was only an hour or so away from my home. At the very least, it was a nice chance to visit my parents.

He was fit and elegant in a tweed jacket, corduroy trousers, spit­ polished brown brogues, a buttondown blue and white striped shirt with a maroon Saint James tie, and remarkably youthful. We talked all the way up, and after a 24-hour visit, all the way back.

I remember how bright he was and how full of love for his school, his concern about its present situation, and his hope for its future. And I remember two very specific topics that we discussed. First, I remember that he agreed with me right away and enthusiastically that the school needed a new, more substantial library, and secondly, something he said as we drove by the football field on our way back down the central drive caught my attention. He looked

left to the field and then right to me and told me something which he obviously considered to be very important: "I learned how to run the Navy by playing football at Saint James School."

And so he did - with remarkable results.

He learned that a team played best when it played together, and that every player counted, and that with the right attitude and a healthy dose of foolish confidence, even the smallest school can beat the odds and win the game.

And over the years, I discovered and came to understand that he had learned some other lessons at Saint James as well: the gift of friendship, the importance of honor, the value of service, and the power of leadership. He also acquired his love of history and of all things English, especially short stories by Saki and plays by Noel Coward, and his devotion to the Catholic tradition within the Episcopal Church. Like our school, he was decidedly "high church," as he called it, and he even told me once that he had considered becoming a priest, but we can only be very grateful that he chose a different uniform and pursued a different vocation.

It is not my purpose today to praise Admiral Holloway, although it is almost impossible for me not to, as I owe him such a tremendous debt, but rather to point out to you as his priest and friend, as we gather

here to bury him, the power, depth, and sincerity of his faith, and of how it inspired, directed, and sustained him through all the "changes and vicissitudes" of his remarkably heroic and substantial life.

And my assertion is simply this: he would not have endured what he endured, achieved what he achieved, and won what he won for us without his belief in the God of Love revealed in Jesus Christ and made real for us in scripture and in the sacraments of the Church.

And here I must acknowledge Dabney, his wife of 77 years, who raised their children when he was at sea, cared for his officers' wives, and presided over his household when he was Commander of the Seventh Fleet and CNO in Washington. Jim always referenced her deep faith and great courage as anchoring and inspiring in his life, especially after they lost their son.

Indeed, Dabney often described herself as the "slave in his chariot" whispering in his ear at his many triumphs: "remember that thou are mortal." When they retired to Bishop Goodwin House, I asked why they did not choose a naval facility; her answer was fierce and immediate: "I don't want him in some place where people are saluting and calling him admiral all the time. He needs to get over that. We need to prepare him to meet God." And so, she has, even choosing to move into the Alzheimer's ward with him three

| chapel talk | years ago, so that she could be with him, and he would not be alone.

In this time of Advent as we prepare for Christmas, we contemplate the great miracle of the Incarnation: the coming of God into the world, the word of God, the purpose and the will of God revealed to us in a human being, Jesus of Nazareth, so that we who believe in him and see in him the way of life can pursue that purpose and reveal that will ourselves.

So, at the end of Jim's life with us, the question for us to consider is simply this: How was Christ revealed in him? How was he faithful? And how did he reveal the purposes of God for us to see and to follow?

And this is not to claim that this great man for whom we grieve and give thanks today was Jesus himself, or indeed a saint. None of us would claim that title for Jim Holloway, any more than we would for ourselves.

This is why we pray for him, and indeed why we miss him; he was a very human being with his fair share of human vanities and foibles.

Happily, God did bless him with a lively sense of humor, so he was very capable of laughing at himself.

But it is to recognize that he did his best to follow Jesus, and ordered his life accordingly. And it is to claim further that we can see in his life especially that there is such a thing as a Christian leader, warrior, and patriot, just as there is such a thing as a Christian husband, father, and friend, because he was in all these roles quite particularly faithful.

Because, as a Christian, he worshiped and served God, all the loves of his life were ordered and pursued accordingly. This is why he was a compassionate leader, a measured warrior, and a thoughtful, balanced patriot, and why he was a faithful husband, a loving father, and a generous, loyal friend.

This is why he devoted not just his remarkable career, but also his very active "retirement" generously and vigorously to the causes and

communities he loved, most especially this grand academy and our little school. I once asked him how he stayed so young, and he answered that he did not play golf.

And this is why he looked to his past with such gratitude, to his future with such hope, and to his present with such courage. He lived in the hand of God, and he gave his life as a gift from God to others, just as Saint James asks us to: "Every good gift and every perfect act of giving is from above," which is the motto of our school. (1.17a) When Jim and I planned this service over ten years ago, he particularly wanted us to sing the hymn Thaxted with the words by Sir Cecil Spring Rice. As I am sure many of you know, Sir Cecil served as the British Ambassador in Washington during the First World War, and he wrote his poem as an ode to his country, expressing his frustration that he was not able to join the fight against his country's enemies, so it spoke to Jim who did join the fight in World War II when he was a very young man, and stayed to fight again in two more terrible wars.

But that is only the first verse. In the second verse, Sir Cecil reminds us that there is "another country, I've heard of long ago:" Most dear to them that love her, most great to them that know; We may not count her armies, we may not see her King; Her fortress is a faithful heart, her pride is suffering; And soul by soul and silently her shining bounds increase, And her ways are ways of gentleness, and all her paths are peace.

And this of course is the point of the hymn, and why we sing it in church. Jim Holloway loved his country and offered his life for his country multiple times in extraordinary and terrifying ways, and even relived those moments in the last few years of his life when those battles became real and present again in his mind. He offered that

sacrifice, and there is no greater patriot.

But he also believed that all of this passes away, and that all who serve, serve under judgement, that the only legitimate purpose of war is to pursue justice and to restore peace, because the spirit that inspires us in all of our struggles can only be the Holy Spirit himself. This is why we pray for the Kingdom of God, and not for our own kingdoms, just as Christ himself has taught us.

A former colleague of mine, Chick Meehan, came to Saint James as a second former, grew up at Saint James, and then returned after college to teach for 48 years, and he used to tell a story to the students in chapel just before Parents' Weekend, encouraging them as a former student himself to greet their parents warmly and proudly.

He told them that when he first came to school he did not think that it was "cool" to hug his mother in front of his friends, but he saw Jimmy Holloway, a prefect and older boy whom he greatly admired and Admiral Holloway's son, rush down the Claggett steps and greet his mother with a big hug.

So Chick then did the same thing when his mother came, who was so shocked that she asked if he had been expelled.

Surely now, Jimmy Holloway is greeting his father with that same enthusiasm and that same embrace, and he will greet his mother and his sisters in just the same way when they join him too—not because his dad was the great hero that he was; he has left those medals and that uniform behind, for they have no place where he is now.

No. Jimmy is embracing his father because he loves him; he is overwhelmed with joy to see him; and he is welcoming him home.

For the wars are over now, and all his battles are done.

SJS Wrestling Captures Fourth Consecutive MAC Title

For the fourth consecutive year, the Varsity Wrestling team dominated MAC competition, capturing both the MAC Dual Meet Championship and the MAC regular season championship. The Saints earned their first wins over both Landon and Georgetown Prep in at least 10 years. Three wrestlers placed at the Maryland Independent School (MIS) State Championships — Tade Omisore '21 (6th, 195 lbs), Jacob Dugas '21 (8th, 220 lbs), and Ben Couling '20 (7th, 285 lbs). Omisore also competed at the national championships at Lehigh University.

Morgan Moseley '20 Joins 1,000-Point Club Congratulations to Morgan Moseley '20 for scoring her 1,000th career point for the Saints! She is only the third female player in SJS history to reach the 1,000 point mark, along with Heather Lowery '08 and teammate Skylar Treadwell '20. We look forward to watching her play at East Carolina University next year!

Tucker Almany '17, a junior at Saint Joseph's University who is a goalkeeper on the men's lacrosse team, was the recipient of the 2019 Dorie Leahy Award at the eighth annual Face-Off Dinner. The award is "presented to the studentathlete who possesses a real love of learning, is faith-filled, dedicated and loyal to their team/ school. This student-athlete has the courage to fight the good fight."

Congratulations to Grant Golden '16 who was named to the All-Atlantic 10 Second Team, his third straight season earning All-Conference honors!

Golden averaged 13.4 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 3.4 assists per game this season for the University of Richmond Spiders.

Saint Place Third at Holloway Tournament The Admiral Holloway Wrestling Tournament has been a Saint James School tradition for nearly two decades. The 2019 tournament was a special event as we honored the life of Admiral James L. Holloway III '39 who had passed away only two weeks prior.

Admiral Holloway was a member of the National Wrestling Hall of Fame and felt wrestling taught important life lessons.

This year's field comprised of 12 teams from independent schools from Washington, DC, Maryland, Virginia, and Pennsylvania. In their first

competition of the season, the wrestlers of Saint James finished in third place out of 12 teams. Three Saints won their individual weight classes to help the team to the strong finish: Colin Green '22 won the 120lb class, Griffin Almany '20 won at 132lbs, and Tade Omisore '21 won at 220lbs. Also placing for the Saints were Vince Anani '21 (3rd), Nicklas Pank '20 (2nd), Nathan Nguyen '20 (4th), Jacob Dugas '21 (2nd), Ben Couling '20 (3rd) and Daniel Peacher '22 (4th).

Varsity Wrestling Coach Steve Lachut MVP: Colin Greene MIP: Tade Omisore Coaches’ Award: Griffin Almany

The 2019-2020 Saints achieved their number one team goal for the season and won an outright MAC Championship for the third consecutive year. It was their fourth straight year with at least a share of the title. No Saint James team, in any sport, has won four straight MAC titles.

The Saints were led through the season by a group of seasoned sixthformers: Griffin Almany, Ben Couling, Austin Grandstaff, Tom Hoang, Nathan Nguyen, Nicklas Pank, Gerry Tejado,

and Tank Yanou.

Almany, Couling, and Pank were elected captains by their peers, while the rest of the sixthform provided valuable leadership especially with each of the three captains missing some time due to injury.

The Saints opened the season with a third place (out of 12 teams) finish in the Admiral Holloway Tournament. Although the Saints did not achieve the team finish they would have liked there were

several performances worth highlighting. The Saints had nine wrestlers finish in the top four in the respective weightclass. Taking fourth were Nguyen (160 lbs) and fourth former Daniel Peacher (285 lbs).

Finishing in third were fifth former Vince Anani (138 lbs) and Couling (285 lbs). Reaching the

finals, but finishing in second were Pank (160 lbs) and fifth former Jacob Dugas (220 lbs). Three Saints were crowned champion of their weight class: fourth former Colin Greene (120 lbs), Almany (132 lbs), and fifth former Tade Omisore (220 lbs).

This promising start was eventually derailed by key injuries to the sixth form

| chalk talk | which forced a season of high hopes into one of development, especially in the middle part of the season. Luckily, as the season drew to an end the Saints were much improved and ready to prove themselves. The first opportunity to do so came at the MAC Dual meet championship where the Saints went 4-0, with their closest competition coming in a 42-34 victory over Sidwell Friends. The Saints used that valuable experience to defeat Mercersburg Academy 45-34 just four days later, earning their second consecutive victory over the Blue Storm. Leading the way for the Saints this day were fourth former Benson Riser, Greene, Yanou, and Tejado who all notched important pins to help earn the victory.

After the big team victories, it was time for the Saints to prove themselves individually.

The Saints got their chance when they traveled to Georgetown Day to participate in the MAC Tournament. Intent on meeting their goal, the Saints wrestlers delivered another impressive performance, winning the title with a score of 128 points. Sidwell finished in second with 95 points and Potomac third with 93 points.

The Saints crowned champions at four of the 14 weight classes: Colin

Greene (120 lbs), Gerry Tejado (170 lbs), Jacob Dugas (220lbs), and Ben Couling (285 lbs).

This was Couling’s third MAC title. Another five wrestlers finished in second place: fourth former Felipe Avellaneda (113 lbs), fourth former Asa Hammer (145 lbs), Tank Yanou (160 lbs), fourth former Sean Rowe (182 lbs), and Tade Omisore (195 lbs).

After the MAC Tournament, the Saints turned their attention to the Maryland Independent School State Championship. For the second season in a row, the Saints had three wrestlers finish in the top 8 of their respective weight, earning “All-State” honors.

First-year wrestler Jacob Dugas finished in 8th place in the 220-pound class. Ben Couling finished in 7th place at the 285-pound class for the second consecutive year. Tade Omisore finished in 6th place at the 195-pound class, which qualified him to participate in the National Prep Championship. Also winning matches at the state tournament were Felipe Avellaneda (113 lbs), Colin Greene (120 lbs), Griffin Almany (132 lbs).

An impressive eight Saints finished with records of .500 or better on the season and doubledigit wins. Greene led the

team in victories with a record of 33-12 at 120 lbs.

Joining Greene with more than 20 victories were: Omisore (28), Dugas (26), Avellaneda (24), Hammer (22), and Tejado (21). Others with double digit winning records were Almany (10) and Couling (18). Almany finished his career, which was impeded twice by injury, with 88 career victories.

Although the Saints will

have to replace several starters, the coaching staff is excited by the promise shown by many of the younger wrestlers including returning starters Avellaneda, Greene, Riser, Anani, Hammer, Rowe, Omisore, and Dugas. There are many other JV and Varsity wrestler who are ready and capable to make an impact next season.

Varsity Girls' Basketball Coach Nate Naylor MVP: Skylar Treadwell MIP: Kayla Turner Coaches’ Award: Morgan McMahon

The Varsity Girls’ Basketball team played their way through another successful season in 20192020. The Saints again emerged as one of the region’s strongest teams, finishing the season with a record of 13-7. The Saints played a tough schedule, matching up against some of the top teams in the region, and even playing three top teams from Canada. A huge part of the team’s success were the results of the players' continued hard work on their individual skills during the off-season.

As a result of that hard work, three players earned a chance to play at the Division I collegiate level.

Fifth former Morgan McMahon made a commitment to Colgate University while Skylar Treadwell (Sixth Form) has signed to play at Seton Hall University and Morgan Moseley (Sixth Form) has signed to play at East Carolina University next year.

Aside from going 13-7, team highlights of the season included winning their bracket of the Title IX National Tournament in Washington, D.C. for the second straight year.

This tournament features 1,200 players on 74 teams from 24 states, the Virgin Islands, and Canada, and we were honored to

represent Saint James.

The Saints also traveled to North Carolina to play in the Independent Schools National Championships where some of the top teams from the United States and Canada participated.

The Saints went 1-2 but gained valuable experience during their time in

| chalk talk | North Carolina. The team also earned another invite to the Bishop Walsh Invitational Tournament, although the tournament was canceled.

While the team’s collective accomplishments were impressive, so were their individual achievements. Of interest is the fact that four Saints averaged double figures in scoring--McMahon, Moseley, Treadwell, and third former Gabby Grantham-Medley.

Each one of the four had games where they scored more than twenty points.

As such, the Saints were especially challenging to defend because they had so many dangerous scorers.

The Saints gained many Herald-Mail honors, led

by County Co-Players of the year, Skylar Treadwell and Morgan Moseley.

Treadwell, our a cocaptain, averaged 18.2 points per game along with nine rebounds, and three assists. Moseley averaged

15 points and 11 rebounds per game.

Grantham-Medley, earned All-County First Team honors as a third former and averaged 15 points, eight rebounds, and three assists per game. Grantham-Medley also earned MVP honors during the Title IX tournament in D.C. McMahon earned the title co-captain and really came into her own this year, perfecting the point guard position and leading the Saint’s offense night in and night out. She averaged six assists per game along with 10 points and four rebounds and was named All-County Second Team.

Deja Hamilton (Fourth Form) rounded out the starting group with relentless defense game after game, and she also provided a lot of the skills necessary for victory that don’t always show on the stat sheet.

Off the bench, one of

the team’s top performers was Amelia Shaw (Fifth Form), a solid shooter who broke open a few games with her threepoint shooting and flashy ball handling. Kayla Turner (Third Form) started a few games and also came off the bench as a very strong rebounder and defender who could guard any position. Elise Bamforth (Third Form) showed great improvement as a ball handler, shooter, and defender, and was also a model of consistency in terms of her hard work and dedication throughout the season. Finally, fourth formers Chaltu Watkins

and Linda Wang worked hard each day in practice and showed commendable improvement as players along with Madison Yates (Third Form) and Chole Jung (Fifth Form).

At the end of the season the coaches voted Skylar Treadwell as Most Valuable Player, Kayla Turner as the team’s Most Improved Player, and Morgan McMahon was awarded the Coaches’ Award.

We wish our graduating players continued success and look forward to another great season next year.

Varsity Boys' Basketball Coach Kevin Breslin MVP: Berke Sertcan MIP: AJ Ayibotele Coaches’ Award: Isaiah Knight

The 2019-2020 Varsity Boys' Basketball team featured nine players gaining their first Varsity experience. With that inexperience came a lot of growth as the team demonstrated progress throughout the year while challenging themselves against some of the best competition in the country.

Our two returning sixth formers, Martynas Sabaliauskas and Berke Sertcan led the way for the team and garnered personal accolades

for their achievements.

Martynas was named First Team AllWashington County by the Herald Mail while Berke, our team's Most Valuable Player as voted by our coaching staff, earned Second Team All-Washington County and was selected to the All-MAC team by the coaches in our conference.

While it was great to see them honored for their

performance in games, they made a larger impact on the basketball program through their consistent efforts to better themselves in practice, in the classroom, and throughout their life on campus. Both students set a great tone for how student-athletes

in our basketball program should carry themselves and I am grateful for their diligence.

I will remember this year for the work ethic this team possessed. No matter the outcome of our game the previous day each player began our

practices with a positive attitude and worked to improve himself and our team. The highlight of our season came in a tournament in the Philadelphia area that we participated in just before Christmas break. Due to injuries and international departures we traveled to The Hill School for a

three-day tournament with only eight students. In games against prep schools from three different states we managed to pull out two wins against more experienced competition.

It was clear that our will to persevere and compete was stronger than the other schools we played during our second round victory

over Western Reserve Academy from Hudson, Ohio.

In a double overtime win by a score of 108106 we received key contributions from all eight of our players with Third Former AJ Ayibotele knocking down clutch free throws to seal the win. To that point in the season AJ had not received much playing time but he calmly made shots that provided the best memory of our season. For that performance and for his consistent commitment to improving himself AJ is our team's Most Improved Player for this season.

Another positive memory of our 20192020 season is the example set by Fifth Former Isaiah Knight.

This was Isaiah's second season on the Varsity

team and his role was diminished this year as new students stepped in to fill his shoes from last year. Isaiah handled this with maturity and continued to work hard and perform whatever the coaching staff asked of him. In the SJIT Isaiah made huge contributions to our win over Scotland Campus by anchoring our zone defense. Following his performance in the tournament he continued to do everything asked of him in leading our defense and earned his way back into our regular playing rotation. His positive attitude and willingness to listen make Isaiah the recipient of our annual Coaches' Award.

Nation's Best Take the Court at the 34th Saint James Invitational Tournament (SJIT) The 2020 SJIT brought some of the country’s most elite high school basketball players to Alumni Hall, and they did not disappoint. Capacity crowds were entertained by highlight-reel dunks, countless 3-pointers, and monstrous blocks, as the eight-team field battled it out over the course of the three-day tournament.

This year’s SJIT teams included Montverde Academy (FL), the #1-ranked team in the country, and IMG Academy (FL), last year's national champs. Those two teams battled it out in the SJIT championship game, with Montverde coming out on top, 67-46.

In anticipation of the many fans who would want to watch these teams compete, an extra set of bleachers was brought in to add seating to the far side of the court. Alumni Hall was filled each day, and the championship game 42

on Saturday was a standing-room only sellout with an estimated crowd of more than 1,200.

“The best thing about being a part of the SJIT is connecting local kids with the highest levels of basketball,” said Kevin Breslin, SJS basketball coach. “As a kid growing up here in town the SJIT was my favorite event to attend each year. I hope kids today enjoyed having that same experience watching the best play right here at Saint James.”

SJS alumni also came out to watch, with more than 40 attending the reception held before the championship.

Jimmy Sutch '07 James “Jimmy” Sutch was a threesport star for the Saints in football, wrestling, and baseball. He was the first wrestler in school history to amass 100 victories and was ranked the #2 wrestler (171 lbs) in the state of Maryland his senior year. On the football field, Jimmy rushed for over 3,000 yards and 48 touchdowns, was 3x All-MAC, 3x All-County, and as a senior garnered Maryland AllState honors, Washington County Offensive Player of the Year, and was nominated to participate in the NIKE elite combine for top recruits.

“I believe competing in various sports enhances your skillset and prepares you for the next level,” Jimmy said. “The sports requirement initiates action for students to extend themselves into uncomfortable situations which encourages growth.”

After SJS, Jimmy accepted a scholarship to play football at nationally-ranked D-II Shepherd University. There, he was one of two true freshman to play and was named “Rookie Player of the Year”

for the Rams. He finished with over 2,000 yards from scrimmage and 30 touchdowns as a Ram and Shepherd made the NCAA D-II Final Four his senior year.

When Jimmy reflects back, he feels that prior to his arrival at Saint James he put too much emphasis on sports and not enough in the classroom.

"When I arrived at SJS that narrative began to change," he said.

"Not only did I remain focused on my athletic goals, but I balanced that with more commitment to the classroom. I learned the meaning of “student-athlete” at Saint James which gave me an enormous advantage as I transitioned to college."

Jimmy feels the value of his Saint James experience cannot be boiled down to a single conversation, lesson, or sermon, but all of it combined.

“When you arrive at a place like SJS, you are immersed in a highlyproductive environment,” he said.

“So, I often tell people – Saint

Jimmy earned his BS and MBA degrees and is now a financial advisor for Abeles Flurie Wealth Management Group, living just outside Shepherdstown, West Virginia.

"This attitude transitions easily into anything I do. It creates a sense of urgency and effort which has led me to successes professionally as well."

Make A Difference Campaign Progress Report The most visible sign of the progress of the school's $35 million Make A Difference Campaign sits behind Claggett Hall and overlooks the Bai Yuka—the new Pohanka Fine Arts Center. Finishing touches are being added to this building that beautifully signifies Saint James School's commitment to arts education.

We are disappointed that we will not be able to officially open the building over Alumni Weekend as originally planned, but a new date will be scheduled at a time when our community can travel safely and celebrate with us.

The site plan for the Turner Athletic Center has been approved by the Washington County Planning Commission and the school is in final negotiations with a general contractor. With the COVID-19 pandemic, construction could begin as soon as it is deemed safe to do so. The building will connect with Alumni Hall and will be a great enhancement for our basketball and wrestling programs.

Leader For Good: Max Adjei-Dadson '17 Takes Mission Trip to Dominican Republic Last summer, Maxine “Max” Adjei-Dadson ’17 spent two weeks on a mission trip to the Dominican Republic to volunteer with Haitian refugees working on sugarcane farms.

Max is a first-semester senior at California Baptist University in Riverside, Calif., and she was able to participate in this lifechanging experience through CBU’s International Service Project (ISP) program. Each year, ISP teams are sent to various parts of the world to serve in many capacities. Max joined the Dominican Republic ISP group a year prior to her trip and throughout the year the group raised funds and participated in cultural trainings to prepare them for their time in the Dominican Republic.

During the mission trip, her group, which comprised of five other CBU students and two faculty members, worked on the construction of three houses in the batey (sugarcane workers’ town).

“Our first interaction with the people we were there to serve was

“We would spend time just talking with her about life on the batey or her kids and it was really cool to have her open up to us,” she said.

On their last day, they officially dedicated one of the completed houses which was meant for her little friend Max and his family. By the end of the day, there was not a single dry eye as they waved goodbye to the children running after the bus and drove away from the batey for the last time.

Max said the experience gave her a new perspective on how to approach service to others.

“We went into it with this kind of concept that we were doing them a favor, but it wasn’t like that at all,” she said. “It was a collaboration with them to make sure their lives could continue at a standard that they needed them to.”

Max said she and her team learned even more how not to take what they have for granted, and most importantly to reduce waste, be it food, household items, clothing, etc.

Barbara Dolson '84 Reconnects with Saint James School Mrs. Barbara F. Dolson ’84 recently made the decision to make a bequest for Saint James School as part of her estate plan. Barbara feels that Saint James School prepared her for her life in a way that her undergraduate and MBA experiences did not. At Saint James, Barbara says she learned the study habits, the ability to break down a project, and time management skills that became the foundation for success in college, graduate school, and her professional career. Barbara says that she connected with the school in a way that was unique. “I found a sense of belonging [at Saint James], everyone wants that.”

Her Godfather’s son, Mr. John P. Psillas ’76, was Senior Prefect.

The sense of pride and purpose she saw in John made a tremendous impression. “I want that!” she thought to her ten-year-old self.

Her parents agreed and she enrolled at Saint James three years later.

Barbara has many fond memories of her time at Saint James School: meeting Nancy Reagan at the White House Easter Egg Roll and visiting the Washington National Cathedral as well as having Mr. Hoyer count the laps students walked around campus to work off demerits earned in the preceding week. Barbara earned just two demerits during her five years at Saint James; the girls had a very strict dress code and she had worn the wrong color sweater. She laughed recounting the story, “It couldn’t have been very noticeable because I had to point out to Father Owens at dinner that I had worn the wrong color!”

career was just getting going and she had small children it had been difficult to travel to Saint James from her home in Georgia (now Florida).

It was the fact that her classmate was traveling from Saudi Arabi to attend Alumni Weekend that prompted her to return. Though initially nervous, she felt very welcome. Barbara assures fellow alums that “you can pick up at any point; there doesn’t need to be a particular time [to return]. There is always someone [at Saint James] to connect with.

It might be a teacher, a former classmate, [or] new Saint James friends.”

She now returns to campus regularly as a member of the SJS Alumni Council.

Both Barbara and her husband both support the Annual Fund because Saint James laid the foundation for her adult life and they both “want to ensure that the school can continue to do for students today what it did for her.”

Barbara felt she wanted to do more. She loved Father Owens and his legacy. She has also admired Father Dunnan and the way he has carried that mission forward.

Making a gift through a bequest in her will allows Barbara to make a bigger impact than she otherwise could. Barbara hopes that her bequest to the Saint James School general endowment fund will help the school endure whatever the future brings; that in “another 100 years the school is still Saint James [and] the mission of the school is still an active, going concern.”

Class Notes 1950

Last spring, Jack Efird continued his travels around the world, flying to Abu Dhabi and Singapore before taking a 12-day cruise to Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Hong Kong. He then spent time in Hawaii, having now visited all 50 states as well as 118 countries.

1951

Jordan C. "Mike" Waite and his wife Nancy reside in Columbia, SC and have four great kids, three chosen great kids, and six lively and precious grandkids.

1962

Tony Ridgway, who owns several restaurants in Naples, FL, recently published a memoir and cookbook summarizing his years in the business.

His daughter Caroline was the book's editor and his wife Wynne was an unofficial editor. The book

is dedicated to his late son Will. You can find a copy in Owens Library!

1970

John McGowan reports that he has esophageal cancer and would appreciate your prayers as he receives treatmant.

He is looking forward to attending his 50th class reunion whenever the celebration is rescheduled.

1975

Jeff Bohman celebrated 25 years with Warren Averett, a regional public accounting firm where he is employed as a Certified Information System Security Professional in the Security Risk and Controls Group. He also helped to co-found a nonprofit more than 15 years ago, supporting and feeding rural public school children in Honduras, and continues to serve as the Treasurer and Board Finance Committee Chair.

Sandra Pollock met up with Leanne Ludwick '16 and Zach Crampton '19 at Haverford College in January while representing Southern Teachers at the school's job fair.

celebrated their 38th anniversary in September.

Their wedding was held in the Saint James Chapel with Father Owens officiating. Their two children, Sarah and Bobby, have professional careers and are enjoying life in Atlanta.

Purim Jung Choi recently made a visit to the SJS campus with her nephew and stopped by Mr. Camp's classroom to reminisce with her favorite history teacher.

1994

Karl Zierfuss and his wife Erin live in Chestertown, MD with their three children, Mackie, Tills, and Bo. He started a new company, Shore Window Systems, LLC, while still owning and operating Zierfuss Painting and Restoration, Inc.

1979

Lee Rath was married to Kathleen Christian on December 31, 2019 in Gatlinburg, TN. Lee and Kathleen reside in Falling Waters, WV.

Beth Hansen Kara and her husband Brendan welcomed their second son, Jerome William, on May 23, 2019. Beth teaches History and English at the Barrie School in Silver Spring, MD.

We were pleased to welcome two special alumni back to campus for the SJIT. Dr. Kasey Kesselring '86 is the Headmaster of Montverde Academy and Dave Rath '85 is Montverde's Associate Head of School and Dean of Admission. They cheered on as their Eagles won the SJIT championship!

Class Notes In Memoriam

William R. Howard, Jr. '43 passed away on January 22, 2020 at the age of 95.

A WWII veteran, William graduated from Washington and Lee University before beginning his banking career at the former Equitable Trust Co. He is survived by his loving wife Annette Reynolds Howard of 65 years; his two daughters Michelle H. Dase and her husband Randy and Kristin H. Forster and her fiancé Mike Jaeger; and four grandchildren, Austin Dase, Hunter Dase, Colin Forster.

Lynn was preceded in death by his wife Nancy. He is survived by two sons, Isaac L. Flory, IV and his wife, Lisa, and William Flory and his wife, Sheryl; and three grandchildren, Carole, Erika, and Zack.

Isaac "Lynn" L. Flory, III '55 of Harrisonburg, VA passed away on December 29, 2019.

After serving in the U.S. Army, he began his career as a co-owner of the Elkton Lithia Bottling Company.

After the sale of the company in 1991, Lynn served as a deputy in the Rockingham County Sheriff's office until he retired in 2000.

Rachael Peisen Parks '89 passed away on January 26, 2020 at the age of 48. She is survived by her children, Alison “Alix” and Josephine “Josie” Parks; and former husband, James “Jay” Parks of Hagerstown, MD. Rachael earned her BA from William Smith College and worked as a graphic designer at Hagerstown Community College.

Donald “Bobby” Frush, Jr. '74 passed away on March 14 in Hagerstown, MD. Bobby graduated from Washington College and worked at the Pentagon for more than 20 years. He is survived by his mother, Nadine Frush, his daughter, Allison Frush, and his step-daughter, Dawn Taranto.

Her funeral was held at the Saint James School chapel with Father Dunnan officiating.

Mr. William A. Hopkins, a former SJS teacher who served as Master from 1954-1957, passed away in February. Mr. Hopkins lived in Annapolis, MD and would frequently visit during Alumni Weekend.

The Rt. Revd. A. Theodore Eastman, former trustee and friend of Saint James, passed away in April 2018. He served as bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland from 1986 until his retirement in 1994.

Verdell Robinson, father of Justin Robinson '15, passed away on March 21 in Manassas, VA. He is survived by his wife Alyse; five sons, Java, Denard, Leonard, Brandon, and Justin; one brother, Albert Scott Robinson; and three grandchilden, Jarva, Demari, and Amaani.

ALUMNI WEEKEND 2020 CANCELLED

See You Next Year!

Alumni Weekend is an event that we look forward to all year, as do many of you, and while we are greatly disappointed, its cancellation was necessary to protect the health and safety of our community.

We hope to host an Alumni Dinner in the fall to present the Exceptional Service Award to Adna Fulton as well as the 2020 Alumni Award.

We also look forward to rescheduling the dedication of the Pohanka Fine Arts Center and the site dedication of the Turner Athletic Center, as well as celebrating the 50th anniversary of the Class of 1970.
