| around campus | Saint James School's 177th Year Kicks Off with Welcome Week On August 17, students arrived to campus with their parents and were greeted by faculty and staff to move in to their new dorms rooms and officially start the 2019-2020 school year. New for this year, Welcome Week included the start of classes, with students partaking in sports practice in the morning, a half day of classes in the afternoon, followed by sports again in the early evening. This allowed students to ease into their academic schedule and added more instructional time during the hottest part of the day.

We welcomed back 157 returning students and 67 new students, representing 13 states and 18 countries, the most diverse group of students in recent memory. Countries represented include Lithuania, Nigeria, Nepal, Malaysia, Turkey, Rwanda, and Slovenia. This diversity adds perspective to every aspect of life and learning at Saint James, and prepares students to lead in a global world.

| around campus | Choristers Participate in Summer Training Course at Washington National Cathedral

Saint James choristers had the opportunity to sing in residence at Washington National Cathedral in July as part of the Royal School of Church Music Choir Training Course for Advanced Choristers. SJS alumni Noel Patterson '17 and Claire Zimmermann '17 were proctors for the week. The course director was Michael Kleinschmidt, Director of Music at St. Mark's Cathedral in Seattle. SJS Welcomes New Faculty and Staff We are happy to introduce ten new faculty and staff members who have joined the SJS community this year. We would also like to officially welcome John Tucker (Director of Admissions) and Father Brandt Montgomery (Chaplain, pictured below) whom we wrote about in the spring following their appointments. Both have been major assets in our community since starting over the summer. Kevin Breslin has also stepped into the Assistant Director of Athletics role, in addition to serving as the Varsity Boys’ Basketball head coach.

Jamie Campbell, RN, BSN, earned her "stripes" as a candy striper in the old Washington County Hospital, volunteering more than 500 hours while still in high school. Now, she is the new school nurse working out of Laidlaw Infirmary and ensuring Mrs. Jamie Campbell the health of our students.

School Nurse Jamie worked in a hospital setting for years, gaining valuable experience working in a large setting, but was ready for a change of pace. So far, she loves the sense of community at Saint James.

"I wanted to work somewhere smaller, more family and community-oriented," Jamie said. "God answered my prayers, and I'm blessed to be here at Saint James."

She enjoys working with our students and likes how Saint James brings different cultures together into one community.

Jamie lives in Falling Waters, WV, with her husband and three children.

Kira Harding spent last year teaching English and Music on a Fulbright Scholarship at a boarding school in India. She earned her BS in Cell and Molecular Biology from the University of South Florida, and also spent time as a counselor at a music camp.

Ms. Kira Harding At Saint James, she teaches Science Teacher IPS and Biology, assists with JV Field Hockey, and lives in Coors Dormitory. Kira says the community is what drew her to Saint James.

"The seated meals, the way students looked adults in the eyes and shook their hands, and the way teachers called out to students by name as they passed each other in the hallways or on campus made it feel like a place where people took the time to get to know each other," she said.

In her spare time, Kira enjoys traveling, reading, and forcing her friends into helping her answer crossword puzzles.

| around campus | SJS alumna Kerri Kline '14 joined our staff at the beginning of November as the Assistant Director of Admissions. In addition to her duties in Admissions, Kerri lives Holloway Hall and serves as an assistant coach in girls’ basketball and lacrosse.

Ms. Kerri Kline After her five years at Asst. Admissions Director Saint James, Kerri went on to St. Mary’s College of Maryland, where she played varsity basketball and lacrosse, and graduated in four years with a BA in Political Science and a minor in Educational Studies. She has worked for the last year as an Employment and Career Counselor at the ARC of Washington County.

"I am so grateful to have the opportunity to return to Saint James," she said. "My time here left an indelible impression on me and I am excited to use my experiences as a student here to connect with prospective students and assist in the admissions process."

Caitlin Kline is the most recent addition to our staff, having joined us as the Development and Communications Associate in mid-November. She will assist those two offices with their needs, including gift tracking, event planning, graphic design, and social Ms. Caitlin Kline media.

Caitlin is a recent graduate of Towson University with a BS in mass communication, and she also holds an Associate of Science in graphic design. She has worked as an event planner at Green Hill Farms in Sharpsburg, MD, and she completed an internship at the Washington County Public Relations Office, where she honed her skills with the Adobe Creative Suite.

Caitlin and her fiance are planning a wedding for May 2020.

Erika Marks teaches Writing and Reading Fiction and has been a working author for the past ten years, publishing women's fiction for Penguin.

"I’ve been writing since high school, but didn’t have my first book published until I was 39, which is Ms. Erika Marks why I’m a big proponent of English Teacher sticking with your passion to make your goals come true—no matter how long it takes," she said.

Erika is the wife of Dr. Ian Brauner, Science Department Chair, and mother of two daughters, Evie '24 and Murray. Her favorite part of teaching is watching students develop and share their stories.

"The best writing comes from a place of honesty, and I’ve been so impressed by the students’ willingness to take risks in their work and be open to sharing those pieces, and those ideas, with one another, which isn’t ever easy—at ANY age," she said.

Kara Newman has a BA in Public Policy, Latin American Studies as well as a Master of Public Policy from the College of William and Mary.

Kara spent last year on a Fulbright Scholarship as an English teaching assistant in Colombia. She was a Ms. Kara Newman Resident Assistant for Spanish Teacher the Virginia Governor's Spanish Immersion Academy and volunteered at Avalon Center for Domestic and Sexual Violence, where one of her duties was translating counseling sessions.

At Saint James, she teaches Spanish I and Spanish III and lives in Coors. She has been impressed by the tightknit community.

"I love living with the girls in Coors and having an opportunity to interact with them outside of the classroom, and just getting to know them as people," she said. "I also LOVE the carillon bells! Hearing versions of hymns I grew up with while walking across such a beautiful campus is really, really lovely."

| around campus | Dr. Joseph Regan has joined the SJS staff as the Assistant Director of Development for Planned Giving and Donor Relations.

Joe is quite familiar with our community, having married an alumna, Melanie Z. Regan '00. He has also taught voice lessons since Dr. Joseph Regan 2009 and directed the Assistant Director of orchestra in the musical.

Development Joe has a bachelor's and master's in Music from the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins, and a Doctorate of Music from the University of Maryland at College Park. He is a professional singer and has taught voice at the university level since 2006, most recently at Bowie State, and he has accumulated a great deal of administrative experience in the process.

Joe, Melanie, and their two sons live in Hagerstown.

"I have been fortunate to come to know and love Saint James since first visiting the campus 16 years ago, and I am excited to help the school further its mission," said Joe.

Melanie Zayas Regan, SJS class of 2000, has taught voice at Saint James since 2006 and co-directed the musical. She has become a full-time voice teacher and the Associate Chair of Fine Arts, a position added in anticipation of the growth that will come with the Mrs. Melanie Regan Assoc. Chair of Fine Arts opening of the Pohanka Fine Arts Center and the new participatory Fine Arts requirement.

“I look forward to having the facility to grow our current program and to create new learning and performance opportunities for our young artists,” she said.

Melanie has a BM and MM from the Peabody Institute of Johns Hopkins University. She is married to Dr. Joseph Regan, and they have two sons. She has enjoyed getting to know students and faculty in her new role.

“The change to being a full-time member of the faculty has given me a deeper appreciation of the community that is at Saint James,” Melanie said.

From Ibagué, Colombia, Andrea Santos joins the SJS community as a Spanish teacher. Andrea holds a BA in Modern Languages and International Business and has worked previously in the Colombian office of Firmenich, the world largest privately-owned fragrance Ms. Andrea Santos and flavor company.

Spanish Teacher Andrea finds the SJS students to be very creative and hardworking, and enjoys teaching them about culture in addition to language.

"I like that the Spanish textbook includes information on the countries in the Spanish-speaking world," she said. "I hope the kids enjoy reading and learning about the culture so that one day in the future they can travel and visit those places."

Andrea is married to fellow Spanish teacher, Camilo Fiore, and the couple lives in Mattingly.

"I have really enjoyed going to chapel on Sundays and spending time with the students at meals," said Andrea.

Ellie Schmucker comes to Saint James from Cornell University, where she earned a BA in Mathematics and German.

At Cornell, she served as a class assistant and tutored at Mathnasium for two years.

At Saint James, Ellie teaches BC Calculus and Ms. Ellie Schmucker Linear Algebra, assists with Math Teacher varsity field hockey, and will coach tennis in the spring. She lives in Onderdonk.

Ellie says that Saint James appealed to her because of its smaller size and the chance for everyone to be known.

"So far, I have really enjoyed the seated meals," she said. "In an age of constant busyness, I appreciate the time we have to take a break together and meet people on campus that we wouldn’t otherwise know."

In her free time, Ellie enjoys trying new baking recipes, which are greatly appreciated by the boys in Onderdonk!

Saint James Board of Trustees Adds Three New Members Dr. David Hein’s familiarity with Saint James goes back nearly five decades, but he is not an alumnus or a past parent. Dr. Hein has demonstrated his interest in Saint James over many years by presenting papers at the annual Saint James Conference, attending events and Dr. David Hein chapel services, teaching occasional classes in history and literature, and giving the Baccalaureate address in 2018. With Chip Prehn, Father Dunnan, and Ted Camp, Dr. Hein is collaborating on a history of the school.

Dr. Hein received his BA from the University of

Virginia, MA from the University of Chicago, and returned to UVA to earn a PhD in Religious Studies.

He had a distinguished 34-year career at Hood College in Frederick, MD where he served as a humanities professor, department chair, and interim dean. Dr. Hein is currently a Senior Fellow at the George C. Marshall Foundation in Lexington, VA. Dr. Hein is the author of an impressive number of books, articles, book reviews, op-ed essays, and other published works. He is an experienced public lecturer, has served on boards and advisory committees at several organizations, and has received many honors and awards for his work throughout his scholarly career.

Mr. John B. Hoke is a proud Saint James alumnus of the Class of 2003. During his time as a student, John played on the soccer and lacrosse teams, served as a tour guide, was a member of the Brass Ensemble, and was a prefect. John’s more recent service to the school Mr. John B. Hoke '03 includes two terms on the Alumni Council, from 2011-2017. John was recruited to join the Board of Trustees as part of the new Young Alumni initiative.

John earned a B.A. (with Honors) from Davidson College in 2007 and his J.D. (magna cum laude) from the College of William and Mary in 2013. After

graduating from Davidson, John worked as an intern for Senator Kennedy and then as a legal assistant for White & Case. He currently practices law as an Associate in the Charlotte office of the international firm McGuireWoods.

John specializes in the non-profit sector, mergers and acquisitions, and securities law.

John is a regional board member for Out Teach, a national non-profit organization that works to encourage outdoor experiential learning programs through education programs for teachers. John also does a significant amount of pro bono work for educationrelated nonprofits, and he is a very active member of his church, St. Peter’s Episcopal.

John and his wife Patricia live in Charlotte, NC with their two young sons.

Mrs. Sabina G. Spicher is the mother of four Saint James alumni: Callan ’10, Carrie ’12, Ethan ’16, and Mark ’19. She works as the Director of Business Strategy and Accounts for her family business, Spicher’s Appliances, based in Hagerstown, MD. Sabina holds Mrs. Sabina G. Spicher a BS in Computer Science from Shippensburg University and is currently pursuing her MBA there.

Sabina has served the School in many ways since her first child began as a student in 2005, including serving two 2-year terms as the Parents’ Association president.

Sabina has been the Head Coach for the Girls' Varsity Tennis Team for 11 years. She has also served on several school-wide committees over the years, and is currently on the Make A Difference Capital Campaign committee.

Sabina's professional career includes work as a software engineer for DOD contractors. She founded a part-time computer system consulting business which was sold in 1993 following the birth of her first child. In the years to follow, Sabina worked on several local boards and non-profits, including Breast Cancer Awareness of the Cumberland Valley, Girls on the Run in Washington County, and Muddy Mamas of Maryland. Most recently, Sabina has been invited to serve on the Board of the Washington County Community Foundation.

Saint James Completes AIMS Reaccreditation Evaluation Saint James School recently completed the 10-year reaccreditation process for the Association of Independent Maryland and DC Schools (AIMS) and the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, using the AIMS instrument.

AIMS believes that successful schools must periodically take the time for an in-depth look at current practices – not only to assure compliance with association standards of good practice, but also to be certain that the school’s written mission truly informs every aspect of school life, both in and out of the classroom.

“It’s basically a year-long process of self-reflection,” said Assistant Headmaster Marc Batson. “It’s an opportunity to look at areas where we may excel or come up short.”

The accreditation process includes three phases: a written self-study by the school, which is comprehensive and widely inclusive of the various school constituencies; a three-day exhaustive visit by a team of outside peer educators that results in a written report to the school; and a school Action Plan that responds to recommendations made by the visiting team.

Mr. Batson led the charge on the self-study beginning in 2018, with various teams across campus contributing to the thorough report.

At the end of October, an AIMS visiting team comprised of seven individuals from other AIMSaccredited schools visited the Saint James campus for three days.

“The team was amazing and a great

group of people who were open and honest with us about our school, and impressed with all that we do,” said Mr. Batson. “Overall, I think things went smoothly, and they were a very insightful group.”

Family Weekend

On September 27-29, we welcomed Saint James families and gave them a taste of what their student's life is like on campus, including following a mini class schedule, artisitic performances, and athletic games. The Parents' Association hosted a cocktail reception on Saturday evening and the weekend was capped off with chapel and brunch on Sunday.

SJS Hosts 'Serious About Science: College Admissions in the STEM Fields' On Wednesday, October 2, the SJS College Counseling Office hosted "Serious about Science: College Admissions in the STEM Fields." A panel of experts discussed the application process for STEMrelated majors in college with students and their families. The panel included: • Kathleen Voss, Mid-Atlantic Regional Director of Admission at Georgia Tech • Brianna Braswell, Assistant Director of Admissions at Lafayette College • Capt. Russell Verby, JAGC, US Naval Academy Blue & Gold Officer • Sterling Yates, Assistant Director of Admissions at the University of St. Andrews (Scotland) "With the diversity of institutions represented, our students were given a valuable insight into the myriad pathways towards earning a STEMrelated degree as well as the necessary

steps to take now so they can be competitive applicants in the future," said Robert Harry, SJS Director of College Counseling.

Last year, 25 percent of the Class of 2019 chose to study engineering or science-related majors in college. With such a high level of interest, Mr. Harry, thought it important to host an event to educate families about the specifics of applying for STEM-related majors.

"I very much appreciated that the speakers addressed the importance of 'fit to major.' Saint James offers our students many opportunities to do this by way of our certified FAB Lab as well as independent research conducted alongside myself and Dr. Weibel," said Dr. Ian Brauner, Science Department Chair.

The STEM event was part of a series of events hosted by the College Counseling Office throughout the year to educate families on the college search and application process. Additional events include a financial aid presentation by a representative from Davidson College, a college essay workshop hosted by American University for seniors, and "The Admissions Game" with noted author and former Admissions Dean Peter Van Buskirk.

SJS Announces New Academic Schedule for 2020-21 For more than a year, Assistant Headmaster Marc Batson and Saint James administrators have been exploring options for the school’s daily schedule.

“Recognizing that boarding school life is very hectic, we sought to find a schedule that could help with the students’ homework load and allow for some more meaningful study breaks during the day,” he said.

Mr. Batson spent significant time researching schedule options, speaking with administrators from other schools from California to Massachusetts. Evidence from several studies reveals that a schedule change itself has no impact on academic performance, but it can impact morale.

“For instance, I interviewed one school in California, and they found that while academic performance was not affected at all by the schedule change, the community simply likes that there seems to be more

collaborative time for students and teachers alike,” said Mr. Batson.

After many conversations with faculty, students, administrators, and other schools, Mr. Batson has recently announced the new daily schedule that has wide support in the Saint James community.

“Essentially, the goal was to create a schedule where only a portion of the seven possible class periods would meet each day,” he said. “This would mean that on any given day, students would not have to prepare for every class. We have also been able to “even out” the schedule by having every period meet for 55 minutes, rather than our current schedule where classes meet for 40, 45, or 75 minutes, depending on the day — the students who were polled praised the regular meeting time.”

In addition to the daily schedule change, Saint James is also switching from trimesters to a semester system.

“Two years ago, we moved to having just two exam periods, so we do not need a big adjustment there, but we are also looking to add semester-long options for courses,” Mr. Batson said.

Top of the list will be adding a semester-long course in health for third form students. Administrators and faculty are also in the beginning stages of creating a more “elective” feel to the English curriculum.

“For instance, the American Literature year-long experience could be fulfilled by taking two semester electives, both of which maintain the focus on the American canon, i.e., Literature of the Sea for one semester; The Slave Narrative for the second semester,” he said.

Other departments are looking at how the semester system could enhance their offerings, too. Grade reporting will be done on a “quarter” system.

Timmy Brooks spoke about poor decisions that led to him being incarcerated and how he has turned his life around.

Bobby Petrocelli spoke to SJS students about tragedy in his life, forgiveness, and living moment by moment.

Guest Speakers Share Powerful Messages with Saint James Community The Saint James School community was fortunate to hear inspiring words from two motivational speakers who came to campus in October.

On October 16, SJS students heard from Timmy Brooks, who, at age 19, was sent to prison for selling drugs.

After serving his time and much introspection, he was able to turn his life around. In May, he graduated Summa Cum Laude from Cabrini College with a degree in business management. He was a two-time USILA All-American in lacrosse and his team won the Division III National Championship this past season. Timmy was also presented with the Girard-Goodwin ScholarAthlete Award for the highest GPA of all male athletes at the school.

Timmy had an important message to share about the choices that led him on a path to being incarcerated and the relationships and process that have allowed him to maintain

sobriety and excel as a student, athlete, brother, son and friend today. Timmy discussed the small, poor decisions he made that led him to make bigger and worse decisions.

He also spoke about the importance of trusted adults in the life of teens and how students should know who to go to for help and listen to those who care for them.

Next up was Bobby Petrocelli, a coach, educator, motivational speaker and author of several books, including “You Matter; It Doesn’t” and “10 Seconds Will Change Your Life Forever.” On October 23 he shared his powerful story with our students and faculty.

Bobby’s story is one of personal triumph and hope following a devastating tragedy in his life. One night he went to bed in suburban America, a happy man with a loving wife. But that night a pickup truck driven by a drunk driver crashed through his bedroom wall, leaving

him badly injured and his wife dead.

“My life did not change in one day,” he said. “My life changed in one moment.”

As he told the story of the fatal crash, he mixed in observations and life lessons.

“Success and failure just don’t happen. They happen because of patterns, habits and routines that eventually lead to success, that eventually lead to failure. Moment by moment you’re making either a good or bad decision,” Petrocelli said.

Bobby shared how he fought through the darkness to triumph; how he drew upon his faith and friends; and how he came to love again. Throughout the talk, Bobby emphasized two words to our students: You matter.

“You matter. We all matter.

Everybody needs to know that. And you’re not defined by what happens to you,” he said.

Volunteering In Our Local Community Students had several opportunities this fall to offer a helping hand at events in our surrounding area. On Saturday, October 5, a group of students volunteered at the Freedom's Run for Health and Heritage in Shepherdstown, WV. SJS parent Dr. Mark Cucuzzella is one of the co-founders of the race. On Sunday, November 3, 15 SJS students went to Big Cork Vineyards for Generosity Feeds, a community volunteer event where 10,000 meals were packaged for children in Washington County. Our students had a great time while helping to fight child hunger in our local area.

Students Take Learning Off Campus

In September, students in second-fifth forms took advantage of our proximity to Washington, DC, and Civil War historic sites for a day of off-campus learning.

• Second formers traveled to the National Air and Space Museum, Steven F. Udvar-Hazy Center near Dulles airport.

• Third formers visited the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History.

• Fourth formers took a self-guided tour of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum.

• Fifth formers traveled to both Gettysburg and Antietam for tours of the battlefields.

SJS Academic Team

On October 8, the Saint James Academic Team competed in the Centennial Invitational Tournament at Centennial High School in Ellicott City, MD. The team went 5-5 in the standard division, and Jack Weisgerber '21 was recognized for scoring the 13th highest points per game in the morning session. He was presented with a shark tooth fossil as his trophy.

Artwork Selected for BWI Exhibit Jenny Cheng '20 was recognized for her work, “Discarded Narrative,” which is being featured at the Maryland Youth Art Exhibit at BaltimoreWashington International (BWI) airport. The show's theme is “See Through My Eyes.”

Jenny’s artwork is one of 24 works selected from nearly 200 entries from around Maryland. It will be on display at the BWI Observation Gallery for the next six months.

SJS Students Spread Sunshine in Jamaica Over the summer, two Saint James students and four recent graduates had the opportunity to travel to Jamaica for a mission trip. The group was led by SJS parent Kris Mahoney (Jaret ’17, Jamie ’20, and Kali ’22), whose nonprofit, Spreading Sunshine 4 Students, makes twice-yearly trips to the island.

Mahoney spent a week in Jamaica in 2016 with a church group, and founded the nonprofit in 2018 because she wanted to do more to make a difference in the lives of the people she met there.

“I just couldn’t get past wanting to do more,” she said. “I wanted people to see there is a great, big world out there with people who really are trying their best and just need some support. The people in Jamaica are so happy and they have nothing. So, for me to be able to take teenagers is huge; I think every kid should experience that.”

of equipment that is left out. With that in mind, she brought swing seats with her, purchased chains and carabiners in Jamaica, and they then created swings that could be easily removed and stored away when not in use.

Mahoney asked the Saint James students to bring along a book that they remembered their mom or dad reading to them as a child. The students then read the books to the children at each of the five schools and donated copies for them to keep.

Interacting with the children was the favorite part of the trip for our students.

“I loved reading with them, and we also got to play and eat lunch with them,” Drabczyk said. “It was awesome; they were the cutest children I’ve ever seen.”

Another school they visited was the Montego Bay Autism Center, started by Mrs. Adama Blagrove in her basement in 2010 when she realized there was no facility in western Jamaica that catered to the needs of autistic children. As a special education teacher, it was a visit to this school in 2016 that really sparked Mahoney’s interest in providing additional support.

Lauren Aguila '21: Service in the Sacred Valley Lauren Aguila ’21 had the unique opportunity to take a two-week service trip to Peru’s Andean highlands over the summer. Aguila said she wanted to study abroad while gaining service hours, so she researched various programs.

“I went with an organization called Global Leadership Adventures (GLA), which is an organization for high school students who want a service experience similar to the Peace Corps,” she said.

GLA’s goal is to provide lifechanging experiences that will cultivate a global perspective and open-mindedness in students that will ultimately inspire them to become great leaders and global thinkers and seek positive change in their own communities. Programs are offered in Africa, Asia, Latin America, and Europe.

Aguila ultimately applied for the GLA program in the Sacred Valley of Peru, was accepted, and spent two weeks in a region called Ollantaytambo with 11 other

teenagers from across the United States. They worked with a group called the Sacred Valley Project to empower Peruvian girls by improving access to education in rural communities. Poverty in Peru is deepest among people of indigenous origin living in remote, rural areas. Aguila said they worked on a dormitory—painting, cleaning, and various other tasks—that housed middle and high school age girls so they could attend school during the week.

“The girls lived in the rural part of the high mountains of Peru, so they couldn’t go to school every day,” she said. “So that dormitory offers them housing during the days they go to school, and then they go home on the weekend.”

In addition to their manual work, the group took time for service learning, discussing how projects can bring meaningful and sustainable change to rural areas.

we could do to help our own communities,” Aguila said.

The group also took excursions to learn more about Peru, its people, and its culture. Aguila said they visited a well-known Peruvian artist, went to a chocolate factory, and went rafting.

“The most culturally-immersed experience was going to a weaving community up in the mountains,” Aguila said. “We got to be involved in their rituals and ceremonies.

They do a ceremony with alpacas, the Alpaca Wedding, and they painted the alpacas with their homemade natural dyes. We also got to make bracelets and eat one of their meals which was delicious.”

Another highlight was a two-day high-altitude hike on the Lares trek through the Sacred Valley. The group spent the night in tents surrounded by the beautiful Andean mountains.

Overall, Aguila said she had an amazing experience and really enjoyed learning about the Peruvian culture.

“I had never been to South America before, so it was cool seeing the different culture,” she said. “It’s more down to Earth, people aren’t worried about rushing through everything, and it’s simple living. I liked experiencing that and getting to know the people there and their culture.”

Pohanka Fine Arts Center Nears Completion Construction work continues on the Pohanka Fine Arts Center, as the future home of SJS art and music programs nears completion.

Members of the Board of Trustees were on campus in October and took a tour of the space. The state-of-theart facility is being built as part of the $35 million Make A Difference campaign and will include a recital hall, art studios, ceramics lab, digital media lab, choir rehearsal room, and more. Construction is expected to be completed in January with the official opening of the building during Alumni Weekend 2020 (April 24-26). We are excited that we have raised $7.2 million for the arts center, surpassing our $7 million goal. We thank all of our generous donors! Saint James Theater Presents Almost, Maine

For this year’s annual Fall Play, SJS Theater presented Almost, Maine, a play

by John Cariani that is comprised of nine short plays that explore love and loss in a remote, mythical almosttown called Almost, Maine. Mr. Cariani describes the play’s subject as ‘falling in and out of love.’ Each of the scenes were beautifully structured and included surprise endings, some joyful and others painful, as love can be.

The selection of this play was purposeful by drama teacher and director Charlotte La Nasa. Ms. La Nasa remembered the play from her own high school days and considered Almost, Maine for her first production at Saint James in 2017.

“I put it on the backburner specifically because I wanted to first work with a play that would build an ensemble and keep everyone on stage at the same time (Twelve Angry Jurors, 2017), and then I wanted to work with poetic text (Tennessee William One-Acts, 2018),” she said. “After we built group dynamics and the ability 22

to really speak on stage, I decided we were ready to do something that was directly connected to the teen spirit.”

The student actors did a magnificent job of bringing their characters—and their issues—to life on the stage, transporting the audience to the snowy town in Maine.

"I’m so impressed with how brave the cast was in being vulnerable on stage,” said Ms. La Nasa. “It was a lot of stories that really forced them to bare their soles and the stories were very mature. I was really touched with how they supported each other and how they were not only willing to take those risks, but also became excited to share those risks.”

Sixth former Maya Drabczyk got involved in theater at Saint James last year, and played Marcie opposite Fifth Former Jackson Pentony’s Phil, a couple whose marriage was falling apart in the scene ‘Where It Went.’

“I liked watching everyone step out of their comfort zones,” she

said. “This was such a challenging play because it dealt with love, so it was hard for teenagers to grasp some aspects of it, but I loved watching everyone step into their characters.”

Fifth Former Jack Weisgerber previously appeared in two musicals (Brigadoon and The Addams Family) but this was his first play. He portrayed Steve while Fourth Former Audrey Johnson played Marvalyn in the scene ‘This Hurts.’ The two strike up an unlikely friendship after Marvalyn hits Steve in the head with an ironing board at a laundromat (and yes, Jack said he did occasionally get hit for real during rehearsals).

“I think my favorite thing about this play was that it had the same energy and team spirit as the musical, but it wasn’t quite as big a production,” Jack said. “It was a more contained type of theater experience and I really enjoyed that.”

Fourth Former Holly Butcher had supporting roles in last year’s play and musical, but in Almost, Maine she took on two parts.

“I’ve never really had monologues before and I had to put all of this emotion into what I was trying to convey and I got to experience what it’s truly like to act and get into a scene and work with your scene partner,” Holly said.

She played Hope opposite Rodrigo Tejado’s Daniel in the scene ‘Story of Hope,’ returning to Maine in search of a lost love.

“Both of the characters I played were from out of town, not part of the Almost, Maine community," she said. "They were both trying to find closure by coming to this town and I think that was a big parallel between the two of them."

In Holly’s other scene, ‘Her Heart,’ she played Glory while Fifth Former Nash Pena played East. Glory finds herself in East’s yard, waiting for the Northern Lights to appear so she can scatter her dead husband’s ashes and say goodbye.

The lighting in the production, and in particular the depiction of the Northern Lights, played an important role in the atmosphere of the show. Fifth Former Emily Zhu was the Lighting Designer and worked closely with Ms. La Nasa on how to express emotion with color and lights.

"For the Northern Lights we agreed that was the most important thing, especially for Holly and Nash’s scene because that was the moment that she releases all of her love," Emily said. "We discussed how to do it – not go too fast, not too slow, and not have the color gradient go to purple, but stay green. I really enjoyed seeing how the different kinds of light helped to express what was

happening on stage, the emotions and the intensity.”

As Stage Manager, Fourth Former Olivia Rosenthal was in charge of making sure everything was in order— from props and costumes to calling cues and changing scenery.

"I think it’s really cool because there is so much going on backstage that not many people think about when they go to watch a play, and I find it all really interesting,” she said.

The involvement of students in every aspect of theater is part of a holistic approach to theater education that was a goal of Ms. La Nasa’s when she started at SJS. “My number one goal as an educator and a leader in the arts is to build a collaborative environment,” she said.

“My primary role is to teach projectbased learning, give and take, and establishing a safe space to take risks.”

She feels the success in a show is how much agency and ownership the students take in production mode, and each show she does the students get closer and closer to taking the full reins.

“They learn how to make their own choices in building the to-do lists, and I try to let them delegate as much as possible after they know what needs to get done,” Ms. La Nasa said. “If I’m not the one calling five minutes to places and it’s the stage manager calling it and everything happens in order because students are hitting their marks, that’s a success. And I think that’s what we were able to do this fall.”

A Life of Service With the passing of Admiral James Lemuel Holloway III, USN (Ret.) ’39 on November 26, Saint James School mourns the loss of one of its most notable alumni. If you are a member of the Saint James School community, you’ve heard the name Admiral Holloway before—perhaps being vaguely aware that he was a high-ranking Navy official who had a wrestling tournament named after him. But to truly know of his accomplishments that came from a life of service to our country is aweinspiring.

Holloway was born in Charleston, SC, on February 23, 1922, the son of James L. Holloway, Jr., a career naval officer who also attained four-star rank. The Holloways were the only father-son duo to become four-star admirals while on active duty.

Holloway arrived at Saint James in 1937 under headmaster Adrian H. Onderdonk. While at Saint James, Holloway was a member of the football, tennis, and basketball teams; a sacristan in chapel; treasurer of the Irving Society; business manager of the Bai Yuka yearbook; co-chairman of the Social Committee; and prefect in Maddox Hall. He was one of 15 graduates in the Class of 1939.

After graduating at age 17, Holloway entered the Naval

Academy, graduating with the first war-accelerated, three-year class of 1942.

Aboard the new destroyer the USS Bennion during WWII, Holloway served as a gunnery officer and participated in operations that seized the key islands of Saipan, Tinian, and Peleliu. During the battle of Surigao Strait in October 1944, he fired possibly the last torpedo that hit the Japanese battleship Yamashiro that finished her off, and then subsequently sank the Japanese

destroyer Asagumo with gunfire.

This was the last naval battle on the high seas in which aircraft played no role.

In a 2007 video interview, he recalled having “a ringside seat” to history, launching five torpedoes at the Yamashiro battleship before facing “a scene of absolute devastation,” with “sheets of flame and sheets of sparks.”

on to play a pivotal role in combat, departing for flight school to train as a pilot. When saying farewell, his skipper, Commander Josh Cooper, asked him to reconsider, to remain a career surface line officer. In response, Holloway said, “Captain, in the past week as a destroyer gunnery officer, we’ve silenced three shore batteries, shot down two Zeros, battled a Japanese cruiser, sunk a destroyer by gunfire, and scored a torpedo hit to help sink a Japanese battleship. What is there left to do?”

Holloway proved as heroic as a Navy flier as he was a Navy sailor.

During his aviation career, he had about 2,700 flight hours (1,000 jet and 1,700 prop) with 202 fixed wing carrier landings. Lieutenant Commander Holloway made two combat cruises to Korea flying F9F Panther jet fighters aboard the carriers Valley Forge and Boxer during which he was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross on one of the very last combat missions of the war. Even after the Korean War, Holloway was never out of the cockpit for long, and in 1958, he assumed command of Attack Squadron 83 aboard the carrier Essex, tasked to support the Marine Corps landing in Lebanon. He also flew missions in the Taiwan Strait and developed a program of

standardized operating procedures, still in use today, credited with “substantially reducing naval aviation accidents.”

Back ashore in 1962, Holloway continued to strive for distinction, studying under Adm. Hyman G. Rickover, the father of the nuclear Navy. From 1965 to 1967, Captain Holloway commanded the first nuclear-powered carrier, the USS Enterprise, which was also the longest (1,123 feet), the tallest (250 feet), and, with its eight nuclear reactor engines and four propellers, the mightiest warship in the world.

Captain Holloway and his crew launched more than 16,000 sorties against the North Vietnamese. He was awarded a Republic of Vietnam award personally presented by South Vietnamese President Thieu and a Legion of Merit, for which it was noted: “Through Captain Holloway’s sound planning, organizational skill, and meticulous preparations for combat, Enterprise was able to

launch a series of highly effective airstrikes immediately upon its arrival in the South China Sea. Captain Holloway continuously demonstrated aggressiveness, dynamic leadership, superior technical knowledge, and skillful seamanship as he directed the operations of the first nuclear ship to engaged in combat.”

Holloway later established the

Navy’s Nuclear Powered Carrier Program at the Pentagon and commanded a carrier force in the Mediterranean.

As the commander of the Sixth Fleet’s Carrier Striking Force in 1970, Rear Admiral Holloway was deployed in the Eastern Mediterranean, where his team provided constant air cover over Jordan in response to the Syrian-

backed PLO invasion. Taking command of the Seventh Fleet in 1972, Vice Admiral Holloway played a major role in the final days of the Vietnam War. As a part of the intense joint-service effort to bring about a cease-fire, he directed more than 150 ships in bombing operations against North Vietnam that helped end hostilities.

He was appointed Chief of Naval Operations (CNO) in 1974, the first nuclear-trained officer to become CNO. As CNO, he was a member of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, serving under three presidents: Nixon, Ford, and Carter. During his four-year term, Adm. Holloway faced challenges including inflation, defense-spending cuts, the aftermath of the Arab oil embargo, and a standoff at the Korean demilitarized zone. He pushed to modernize the U.S. fleet and develop new aircraft, including the F/A-18 Hornet, while competing against the Soviet navy in the aftermath of the Vietnam War. Adm. a crucial weapon for Navy destroyers, cruisers, and submarines — as part of the Strategic Arms Limitation Talks with the Soviet Union. He also oversaw a new fleet organization plan that created tactical “battle groups,” generally centered around an aircraft carrier.

After retiring from the Navy in 1978 after 36 years of service, he chaired the Special Operations Review Group convened by the Department of Defense to investigate the aborted 1980 Iranian hostage rescue attempt. From 1980 to 1988 he was President of The Council of American-Flag Ship Operators (CASO), an association of US Merchant Marine companies engaged in the foreign trade. In 1985, he served as Executive Director of the President's Task Force on Combating Terrorism. In 1986, he was appointed by Vice President Bush as Special Envoy to the Middle East to resolve a territorial dispute between Bahrain and Qatar.

In 1980 he became President of the Naval Historical Foundation (NHF).

He served for 28 years as President and then as Chairman, and upon his retirement from that position, he was elected chairman emeritus and awarded the Distinguished Public Service Medal by the Secretary of the Navy. He was appointed Chairman of the U.S. Naval Academy Academic Advisory Board in 1986, and in 1996 at the request of the Superintendent of the Academy, established the U.S. Naval Academy Foundation, serving as its first Chairman of the Board and President until retiring in 2003 as chairman emeritus.

In 2007, Holloway published Aircraft Carriers at War, and was instrumental in the online publishing of the Naval History and Heritage Command’s Dictionary of American Naval Fighting Ships project. He also drew on his inflight experience to serve as an adviser to the movies “The Bridges at Toko-Ri” (1954), where he flew the lead aircraft in the filming of the movie, and “Top Gun” (1986).

During his lifetime of service, Holloway received 28 American

military personal decorations, unit awards and campaign and service medals and ribbons. He received 20 foreign decorations as well. As a civilian, he received the Distinguished Public Service Medal for his service as president of the NHF.

Holloway is survived by his wife of 77 years, Dabney Rawlings Holloway; two daughters, Mrs. Lucy Lyon (Estero, FL) and Ms. Jane G. Holloway (Washington, DC); and a grandson. His son, James L. Holloway, IV, graduated from Saint James in 1963, and died in an automobile accident in 1964 while a student at the University of Virginia. He also had two nephews who attended Saint James, Cmdr.

One of Saint James School’s most significant alumni, Holloway truly loved the school and was grateful for the time he spent here, crediting the study habits he learned at Saint James for his success as a naval officer.

He served as Chairman of the SJS Board of Trustees from 1989-1999 and stepped in to take bold and decisive action in the early 1990s when the school was under-enrolled and in financial trouble. He led the search for a new headmaster and appointed the Revd. Dr. D. Stuart Dunnan in 1992.

us stronger by reasserting our commitment to our distinctive mission and culture—chapel every morning, the honor and dress codes, rigorous academics, challenging sports, and a stronger sense of community where everyone counts," said Father Dunnan. "I always remember his first instructions: get rid of hazing, save the wrestling program, and make sure they use forms, not grades."

Holloway worked closely with Father Dunnan and administrators on two capital campaigns that transformed the campus—adding the Bryon-Bowman Fine Arts Building, Kerfoot Refectory, Coors Hall, and Owens Library.

The second girls’ dormitory, Holloway House, was named as a tribute to him and his son "Jimmy," and each year Saint James hosts the Holloway Wrestling Tournament in his honor. He had a great love for the sport, felt it taught important life lessons, and was the perfect sport for a small school. While at the Naval Academy he was on the varsity intercollegiate team and was never pinned in his career. In 1999, he was elected into the National Wrestling Hall of Fame in Stillwater, OK.

Father Dunnan will be presiding and preaching at Admiral Holloway’s funeral on December 18 at the Naval Academy Chapel, where he will receive special military honors. The Saint James School Chapel Choir will sing and sacristans from Saint James will be serving, so Admiral Holloway's beloved Saint James School will be well represented.

Admiral Holloway’s contributions to Saint James were many, and the impact that his distinguished life of service had on our country cannot be measured.

May he rest in peace and may light perpetual shine upon him.

A Son's Tribute to his Father Geordie Newman's '93 Eulogy for his father, Dr. George C. Newman, II Saint James Chapel July 27, 2019

Dr. Newman was the School Doctor from June 1989 to 2000, a trustee of the School from October 1995 to July 2010 and elected trustee emeritus in October 2010. He and his wife Judy, who was the School Nurse from August 1988 to June 2000, received the Exceptional Service Award from the Alumni Council in 2013.

He will be greatly missed.

To quote the classic film Tommy Boy, “There’s not much more we can say, really. We lost someone we love; it hurts. Even though George is gone, he will remain in our lives forever, comforting us, making us laugh, watching over us.” My father loved his family, his patients, and washing cars.

His love for Judy, his wife of 47 years, my sister Megan and her husband Taylor, me and my wife Mandy, all his grandchildren, Emma, Will, Tucker, and Charlotte, was unconditional and, trust me, we all tested it.

I remember being little and every day when he would return home from work, he would honk as he passed the house to put his car in the barn. He would walk in the back door and give my mother a hug and a kiss as she finished preparing dinner before he did anything else. My father was not an overly affectionate person as a result of his medical training, so this daily gesture was big for him. If I ever questioned why we were doing something, my father would say, “keep still, you know your mother.” Every time my father greeted me as I returned home from college, he would shake my 30

hand and say, “shave, get a haircut, and call your mother more often.”

He was always more concerned about Judy than himself. My parents had a wonderful relationship, experiencing many eventful trips together, spending time at their golf villa, family gatherings, and just enjoying life together. While no relationship is perfect, theirs is one we should all strive to have.

My father’s love for Megan and I was unconditional. He never showed favoritism as far as I know.

He attended ballet recitals for one of us and dug the Bavarian Inn laundry vehicle out of Beaver Creek on Easter morning for the other.

He watched one of us graduate from medical school and follow in his footsteps, while for the other he had the conversation about the appropriate age to consume beer.

Obviously, it would have been very difficult for my father to pick a favorite child. Even with his busy schedule seeing patients, board meetings, and hospital obligations, he always found quality time to spend with his family.

I was at Rotary a few weeks ago having breakfast with Dr. Harrison and Rich Diamond. Rich told me

about when he would meet with my dad as a drug rep, and my father would already know everything about the new medication and the disease it was created to address and asked very specific questions. My father never stopped learning about medicine. Not many people read the New England Journal of Medicine for pleasure. Recently he provided me with an article from it about a study on the homeless population.

It was cute that he thought I would comprehend it.

Dr. Harrison told me about working with my father at the Community Free Clinic. At the time, my sister was in medical school and volunteering with my father.

Dr. Harrison spoke about how my father took the time to explain the importance of connecting with the patients and that “bedside” manner was a very important aspect of medicine. He was very proud of my sister and often told me stories about how she cared for her patients in the same manner as he did. Patients were friends to my father, not charts.

I remember countless times being in town with my father and a patient would come up and speak with him.

He would greet them by name and

| chapel talk | have a brief discussion with them. As we would walk away, my father would tell me who they were and about their jobs and if they had interesting hobbies.

As intelligent as my father was, the concept of retirement escaped him.

His first retirement lasted only a few months. He spoke to me about an opportunity to be the chief medical officer at the Western Maryland Hospital Center that needed some assistance reorganizing. I questioned him on this and suggested he enjoy retirement and take the time to do things he wanted that he never had the time to do. His response was his concern about mom playing mahjong at Fountain Head a few days a week and he couldn’t afford to retire. I was pretty sure the quarter games she plays and the $10 he spent for a sandwich and iced tea wasn’t the true reason he decided to come out of retirement. Rather he truly enjoyed working with patients and his colleagues. If he didn’t need a double knee replacement, he would have never retired a second time. He truly loved medicine; it was his way to help people.

I washed cars with my father shortly after birth on a weekly basis.

In the winter, he would give me surgical gloves so my hands would stay dry; frozen, but dry. Washing cars was our time to talk about anything and everything. In the film Tommy Boy, Tommy was a bit of an underachiever in college and wasn’t successful until he applied the life lessons his father instilled in him.

Pretty easy to make the connection here. My father and I showed the 1929 Packard his father gave him at many car shows. We won many trophies, but it was the time cleaning the car and being at the shows that was the real win. My father sold the Packard to pay for my undergraduate philosophy degree at Gettysburg College, where he also graduated.

Clearly, he wasn’t concerned about

the return on investment, but it was an incredibly selfless act by my father; something he did all the time.

Another valuable lesson my father taught me was after making a mistake, you fix it, because as he said, “it isn’t going to fix itself.” This lesson was the result of me scratching his Corvette with the snowplow on the ATV. Knowing my father’s love for cars, I decided I would perhaps wait to tell him. He took me down to the barn, pointed at the torn car cover and scratch, and asked me if I thought it was going to fix itself? He went on to let me know I was always going to make mistakes, but it is how you deal with those mistakes that makes you who you are.

My father had many sayings.

“Strong as a bull and twice as smart” was one of my favorites. We spent countless hours raking leaves, painting fence boards, mowing, and many other manual labor tasks at our home, Chreshiem. He would be splitting wood and when the axe would go thru the log, he would turn to me and say, strong as a bull and twice as smart in a comical voice.

Looking back on it now, it was my father teaching me that regardless of the task, you do it to the best of your ability and you finish it. It may require rolling up your sleeves and getting dirty, it may require thought, or it may require both.

Another thing he always said to me out of nowhere was, “you are a good man, Geordie Newman.” Again, he wasn’t overly affectionate, and this was his way of saying, “I love you and I am proud of you.” We both understood. I have always been close with my father; we are the sensitive members of the family. Several years ago, I had to address a situation and I sat my parents down and told them about how I would handle things and it was going to be fine. But if I was a little distant, it was nothing to do with them. My father’s response, “we are too close; your problems are

my problems and we will handle it together.” He did exactly that.

My father listened to Taylor Swift, not relevant at all, but a fun fact.

Judy, Megan, and I spent days reading the wonderful comments on Facebook that people posted about my father. It was clear everyone that worked with him enjoyed his professionalism and humor. His patients were grateful for the care he provided and how he made them each feel like they were his only patient. My brother in-law Taylor probably said it best. My father thought highly of Taylor and referred to him as “a smart cookie.” Taylor wrote: He was so many things to so many people, but regardless if you knew him as George the father-in-law, as I did, George the friend, Dr. Newman, PaPa, dad or husband, we all saw the same thing: A brilliant, great man who took tremendous pride in improving the lives of those around him. The community and our family lost a true great one. He was the best father-in-law a man could ever ask for. I loved him like my dad. RIP George.

Unbeknownst to me, my father had many conversations with Fr. Dunnan and my mother about being ready to move into the afterlife, and he was at peace with that decision. He believed deeply in God and that there is an afterlife that he was looking forward to. While on vacation with Megan’s family earlier this month, he had a dream about his father, which he never did. He said his father was ready for him and my father was ready to go if that was God’s will.

It was only my father and I in the hospital room as I said good bye to him for the last time. I held his hand and told him that I loved him, how much he meant to me, and that I would take good care of mom and Megan. I choose not to remember my father as he was at the hospital; rather I will always remember him as strong as a bull and twice as smart.

Catching Up with SJS Alumni

Leanne Ludwick '16, a senior at Haverford College, earned first-team All-Centennial Conference accolades. Her 30 points were the second-highest mark in the conference. She was named Centennial Conference Offensive Player of the Week in September and has been named three times to the Centennial Conference Academic Honor Roll.

Grant Golden '16, a junior at the University of Richmond, was named to the Preseason All-Atlantic 10 Second Team.

Tyler Grochot '18 was named All-Liberty League Honorable Mention after his second season at quarterback for the St. Lawrence Saints. He tied a program record with six touchdown passes in a win over Rochester and his 26 touchdown passes on the season rank second all-time.

In the first start of his career at Butler University, Bryce Golden '18 delivered with career-highs of 17 points and 8 rebounds.

John Metchie '18 was one of the Student-Athletes of the Week for October 10 for the University of Alabama football.

After being signed as an undrafted free agent following the conclusion of the NBA draft on June 20, Saint James graduate Justin Robinson '15 officially scripted his name on a Wizards contract on July 14. He saw his first NBA action on October 23 and has seen playing time in several games.

Olivia Riser '20 was selected to play in the Field Hockey Coaches' Association of Maryland's annual senior game, becoming just the second Saint James field hockey player to receive that honor. She had a big fan club of teammates travel to Archbishop Spalding on November 13 to support her.

National Signing Day On National Signing Day (November 13), Morgan Moseley '20 signed her letter of intent to play Division I basketball at East Carolina University next year. We look forward to watching her on the court in her last season with the Saints and as she continues her playing career with the Pirates.

Austin Grandstaff '20 and Gerry Tejado '20 were selected to participate in the 4 Diamonds Senior All-Star Game comprised of senior soccer players from Washington County, MD and Franklin County, PA. The game was played on November 6 and and the Washington County team claimed a 2-1 victory.

Varsity Boys' Cross Country Coach Katie Ellis Most Valuable Runner: Matthew Trott Most Improved Runner: Drew Weisgerber Coaches’ Award: Will Zimmermann

The 2019 Saint James Boys’ Cross Country team consisted of 20 runners and was led by Head Coach Katie Ellis and Assistant Coaches Molly Billings, Alex Gould, and Barry Salisbury. This season was a big growth year for the team, and they made great improvements in both individual and team performances throughout the season.

The team started the season with a strong effort at the Brunswick Invitational, which was the first 5k race for many of the runners on the team.

A very large race in Virginia, Oatlands Invitational, presented the team with a new challenge of competing on a tough course in a very crowded field of talented teams from around the country; the boys fought hard to beat seven schools in a race that had more than 400 participants. An early season highlight was the myriad personal best performances at the 6th Annual Progressive Physical

Therapy Invitational in Cumberland, MD. As the season progressed, the top runners became more consistent, and team performances continued to improve in later meets.

The highlight of these later races was the trip to Disney World in Florida over fall long weekend.

The team raced at the

ESPN Wide World of Sports and placed 10th of 16 teams in the small school division, a race that featured teams from around the country.

The biggest success of the season was at the MAC Championship in Derwood, MD on the most difficult course the team saw all season.

The boys’ team had its

| chalk talk | best performance in recent history, beating two teams (Potomac and Maret) to place 5th in the championship race.

Strong performances in the JV and 9th/10th Grade Championship races rounded out the day.

Nearly every boy ran a personal best time despite the many hills on this challenging course. Standout performances included a 22nd place finish from Fifth Former Will Zimmermann, a 20th place finish from Fifth Former Connor Port, and a 12th place finish from Fourth Former Matthew Trott. Trott’s performance was particularly exciting because he ran a time of 17:47, a new school record.

Trott led the boys’ team for the majority of the season and earned the Most Valuable Runner award at the Varsity Banquet. He was often closely followed by veteran runner Connor Port, who had a breakout season, running personal bests on a weekly basis.

Returning Captain Will Zimmermann was also often in the top three for the varsity team, and he received the Coaches’ Award for his strong contributions both during meets and practice this season. New runners Ege Cimok (Fifth Form) and Povilas Cereska (Fourth Form) were frequently in the top five for the team

this season, and returning runners Jackson Pentony (Fifth Form) and Kevin Jin (Sixth Form) rounded out the top seven for the team.

Veteran runner and Sixth Form Captain Nicky Pank led by example in daily practice and made significant improvements this season, pushing the top seven and setting several personal bests. New Third Form runner Drew Weisgerber developed tremendously over the course of the season, finishing third for the team at the Mercersburg race and earning the Most Improved award for his impressive efforts. Fourth Former Sam Fonss, also new to the team, was right on the heels of the top seven. Fifth Form veteran runner Mike Lau was also a big contributor for the boys’ team all season, setting several new personal records.

Many other runners were behind the top seven pushing them to improve in every practice and race. Among these were many new runners including Second Formers Jeremiah Gorham and Drew Martin, Third Former Chris James, Fourth Former Raul Peniche, and Fifth Former Ian Stimson. Returning runners—including Fourth Former Rodrigo Tejado, Fifth Former Jack Weisgerber, and Sixth

Formers Patrick Nguyen and Bill Li—also pushed themselves and their teammates this season.

Improvement is the most important metric for determining the success of a cross country season, and the 2019 season proved to be one of notable improvement for the team. Over the course of the season, the 20 members of the boys team dropped a total of 33 minutes, and 17 seconds in their 5K times.

The 2019 Saint James Girls’ Cross Country team consisted of 12 runners and was led by Head Coach Katie Ellis and Assistant Coaches Molly Billings, Alex Gould, and Barry Salisbury.

This season was the most challenging in this team’s short history as the team faced many injuries and setbacks, and the team’s success in the face of these challenges was a mark of their resilience as a group.

The team started the season with a strong showing at the Brunswick Invitational, placing 11th of 15 against some

of the largest public schools in the area. A very large race in Virginia, Oatlands Invitational, presented the team with a new challenge of competing on a tough course in a very crowded field of talented teams from around the country.

The girls’ team had the opportunity to compete in the Varsity B race for the ISL, and earned a sixth place finish out of 16 ISL teams. Nearly every girl ran a personal best time despite the many hills on this challenging course.

Stand-out performances included a 20th place finish from Second Former Evie Brauner, a 6th place finish from Third Former Pearl Walker, and a second consecutive individual championship from Third Former Elise Bamforth.

Bamforth’s performance

was particularly exciting because she ran a time of 21:56, a new school record.

Sixth Former Darcy Farrell and Fifth Former Morgan McMahon led the team as captains this season, and while McMahon was injured for the entire season and Farrell for half, both made tremendous contributions to daily practice and meets as captains. Once Farrell was sidelined, Bamforth led the team in every race and earned the Most Valuable Runner award at the Varsity Banquet. She was often closely followed by returning runner Pearl Walker, who made great improvements this season. Returning Fourth Former Chaltu Watkins

was also often in the top three for the varsity team before an injury shortened her season. Fourth Form veteran runner Audrey Johnson was also a big contributor for the girls’ team all season, placing fourth or fifth for the team in every race. Other runners who scored in the top five for the team this year included new runners Camilla Power (Fourth Form) and Sophia Bristol (Third Form) and veteran runners Helen Jackson (Fourth Form) and Venus Anani (Fifth Form); Anani had a tremendous season dropping more than six minutes on her 5K time, and was named Most Improved

Runner at the Varsity Banquet for her efforts.

Veteran Fifth Form runner Elle Maubert had a fantastic season of growth, running a significant personal best time at the Mercersburg race, and new runner Evie Brauner, while not able to compete in every race as a Second Former, was a significant contributor, particularly in the ISL race.

Improvement is the most important metric for determining the success of a cross country season, and the 2019 season proved to be one of unprecedented improvement for the team. Over the course of the season, the 11 girls who competed in multiple races dropped a total of 23 minutes and 47 seconds off of their 5K race times.

Varsity Field Hockey Coach Molly Lachut MVP: Jenna Root MIP: Kaitlin Dellaposta Coaches’ Award: Reagan Bradley

The 2019 season was a challenging one for the Saints, who had to overcome a handful of unforeseen, impactful moments while battling a relentless schedule all season long. The story of the season was resilience and pride in the face of adversity. It was also about enjoying being part of a team and finding little victories to celebrate along the way.

After powerful preseason practices and adjusting to the loss of senior goalie Leiny Ruggiero for the entirety of the season to an injury, the competitive part of the

season kicked off with a scrimmage at Madeira, field hockey’s first trip to visit the Snails in several years.

Despite being down 1-0 for most of the game, the Saints scored three goals in the final six minutes to cap off the preseason. Olivia Welty (Sixth Form) scored once and Reagan Bradley (Fifth Form) scored twice for the Saints.

The regular season began with a string

of losses to perennial powerhouses Foxcroft, Flint Hill, and Oakdale, but the Saints demonstrated their unity and perseverance with a 3-0 victory in the rain against Tuscarora. This time, Welty scored twice and Bradley scored once

to lift the Saints to victory.

Zoe Esterly (Sixth Form) nabbed her first point of the 2019 campaign with an assist and Page Bacon (Third Form) recorded her first career point with an assist of her own. This game marked goalie Olivia Rosenthal’s (Fourth Form) first varsity win – a shutout, no less!

The Saints lost last year’s top scorer, Welty, for the season due to injury after she scored yet another goal against Mercersburg, but others quickly rose to fill the void. Eliza Durham (Sixth Form) scored her first goal of the season against Huntingdon, and Esterly scored hers against Walkersville, assisted

by Olivia Riser (Sixth Form). Bradley continued her strong season with another goal against Winters Mill. Throughout

| chalk talk | the tough middle portion of the season, the Saints’ defensive corps was unshakable. Led by Jenna Root (Sixth Form), Katy Kwon (Fifth Form), and Hav Mercer (Fifth Form), defense was a highlight all season for the Saints, but especially during the grueling schedule the Saints faced from late September through early October. Root, Kwon, and Mercer, along with halfbacks Coco Zhang (Fifth Form), Jessica Geng (Fifth Form), Chloe Jung (Fifth Form), and Molly McFillen (Fourth Form) anchored the team on and off the field.

Impressively, the defense held Francis Scott Key to one of their lowest-scoring games of the season – an outstanding feat against a team that played in the

state championship game just two years ago and lost in the state semifinals last season. Midfielders Durham, Bacon, and Kaitlin Dellaposta (Sixth Form) had perhaps their best game of the season, seamlessly tying the forwards to the halfbacks into one unit on the field.

The season ended with three consecutive victories for the Saints, all shutouts. Perhaps the most exciting moment of the year occurred against Brookewood School.

After battling all game, the teams were tied 0-0 when the Saints earned a penalty corner with just 15 seconds remaining in regulation. In field hockey, if time expires on a penalty corner, the corner is played out despite the clock

reading 0:00. A failed corner would have meant overtime; a successful corner would lead to a Saint James victory with time expired. After inserting the ball, Durham received a pass from Mercer and scored the game-winner in front of a jubilant crowd at Turner Field. The Saints brought that momentum into a 7-0 rout of Brunswick, where Bacon continued her first season with a hat trick, and newcomer Francine Diaz (Fifth Form) recorded her first career assist. Riser added two goals to her season total, while Durham added one. Forward Lizzy Miller (Fifth Form) and halfback Kwon came remarkably close to adding their own goals. Bradley had an assist and, perhaps most notably, Root scored her first varsity goal on a

rare penalty stroke. The Saints’ season ended with a victory at Catoctin, a 1-0 grind that saw Bradley cap her season with another goal and helped Rosenthal top 50 saves in net on the season – the third year in a row that Saint James goalies have hit this benchmark.

Excluding the goalie, seven out of ten Saint James starters recorded at least one goal this season, and eight out of ten had either a goal or an assist. Though the team will lose seven seniors to graduation, eleven members of the team are expected to return for the 2020 campaign, so Saint James Field Hockey has much to look forward to next fall.

The 2019 Saint James School football season was filled with new faces, a daunting schedule, struggles, and ultimately growth as a team. A loss of 17 players that saw significant playing time from the 2018 team presented challenges that would have to be met head on by a small group of returning starters and many young players.

The Saints opened the season against a new opponent, National Christian Academy. NCA boasted an impressive roster with 13 different players holding Division I scholarship offers. From the get-go it was obvious that the Saints, who were starting six Third Form,

three Fourth Form, and seven new players, would have a difficult road.

New Second Former Rhys Staley guided the Saints offense against the stout NCA defense. Fifth Formers Lliam Horrocks and Lucas George led the team in tackles while Tanner Brandimarte (Sixth Form) tallied an interception. When the final buzzer sounded, Saint James was on the losing end of a 33-0 score.

Week two brought another new opponent in Kiski Prep School. Kiski boasted a senior-laden roster but were more

closely matched with the Saints. Saint James had no issue chewing huge chunks of yards on the ground behind a mammoth-sized offensive line (Fifth Former Sahil Bhular, 6’6 ½ 303lbs; Fifth Former Miigwans Assance, 6’5 ½ 367lbs; Sixth Former Ben Couling, 6’4 300lbs; Fifth Former Chris Weber, 6’7 354lbs; and Third Former Riley Bishop, 6’3 221lbs).

Isaiah Knight (Fifth

Form) rushed for 272 yards with three TDs on the ground and another through the air. Quarterback Jacob Dugas (Fifth Form) was 15 of 33 for 181 yards with two passing TDs and a rushing TD. First-year player Jesper Hagberg (Fifth Form) was also on the receiving end of a touchdown. Fifth Form kicker Jimmy James was 6-of-6 on extra-point trys, but the Saints had difficulty all day stopping Kiski’s offense. Third Formers Kyle SimonGuerin and Will Gisriel led the team in tackles, while Simon-Guerin and Knight also chipped in with pass deflections.

Fourth Form linebacker Sean Rowe also registered a caused fumble for Saint James. As good as these individual efforts were, the Saints could not keep pace with Kiski and fell to 0-2 by a 56-42 decision.

The Flint Hill Huskies were next up on the Saints

| chalk talk | schedule. The Saints once again faced a veteran team.

Knight was an offensive bright spot for the Saints, rushing for 114 yards.

Simon-Guerin tallied the only Saints score with a defensive interception that he returned 30 yards for a touchdown. Rowe, Couling and Dan Peacher (Fourth Form) each tallied a sack.

The Saints dropped their next four games against Williamsport (3914), new opponent Bullis (35-6), Potomac (48-27), and Boonsboro (66-33).

The storyline for each of the games was the same.

Saint James had no issue moving the ball with Knight running for 507 yards and Dugas passing for over 664 yards, but the defense struggled stopping opposing offenses. The team did improve each week, although not enough to earn their first victory.

Players like Gisriel, Rowe, Lenton Davies (Third Form), Omitade

Omisore (Fifth Form), Ezra Burdette (Third Form), and Chase Dotson (Fourth Form) showed flashes of great promise.

Week eight saw the Saints traveling to familiar MAC foe Sidwell Friends School for that team’s homecoming. Although both teams had similar records, it became apparent from the opening kickoff that the visiting Saints were ready to get into the win column.

Knight ran over, around, and through the Sidwell defense for 338 yards.

Behind the blocking of Couling, Weber, Bhular, Bishop, and Assance, Knight shredded the defense for big yards while quarterback Dugas completed nine of his throws for 138 yards.

Simon-Guerin hauled in 108 yards in receiving with Staley, Dotson, and Brandimarte also adding catches. When the final buzzer sounded, Saint James earned its first

win of the season in convincing fashion, 4421.

Up next was Maret, the final MAC rival on the Saints schedule. The game was a back-andforth contest with each team finding the endzone.

The Saints were able to put on several long and methodical drives ending in scores while Maret was able to break some big plays against the young Saints. Ultimately, too many failed short-yardage conversion attempts spelled doom for Saint James. Maret pulled ahead for a 48-35 victory.

Saint James was left scrambling when its game 10 opponent abruptly canceled, leaving not only a hole in the schedule, but no opportunity to recognize the hard work and dedication of Sixth Form athletes Joel Martirano, Brandimarte, William Topham, and Couling. Miraculously, Royalty Institute, a school from the Washington D.C. area, had an opening and graciously filled the spot.

The game was one for the ages, played at home in front of an enthusiastic Saint James crowd as both teams traded the lead back and forth.

With Knight out with an injury, quarterback Dugas led all rushers with 100 yards, repeatedly dicing the Kings defense for big gains. He also managed to throw for 165 yards. Brandimarte

made the most of his last time in a Saints uniform by leading the team in tackles, causing two fumbles, and intercepting two passes. Offensive lineman Couling had the opportunity show his talent when he lined up in the backfield and bull rushed his way into the endzone for his first-ever touchdown. The game was won with under two minutes left to play when Hagberg, a player who had never played the game prior to this year, caught a pass and outraced several defenders to score the go-ahead points. Royalty Institute had one final opportunity with 1:30 left in the game, but the Saints defense was up to the challenge with Bishop ending any hopes of a comeback with a gameending sack to seal the victory.

Although the Saints season ended with a 2-8 record it will be defined by other metrics. Our four Sixth Form players, Martirano, Couling, Topham, and Brandimarte showed the character and leadership throughout the season that Saint James student-athletes are known for. The team was comprised of many young players who never gave up, never stopped working and always gave it their best effort. The coaches witnessed phenomenal growth as individuals and, more importantly, as a team.

Given that many of the teams we played this season – whether conference or nonconference – have almost daily access to a PGA Professional and nearly all have a stable of players who compete in golf yearround, I’m proud of what we were able to accomplish in 2019.

After starting the season 3-0 with quick wins against St. Maria Goretti, Linganore High School, and Tuscarora High School, we finished the year with a nonconference record of four wins against only two losses. In our MAC

regular-season matches, we garnered a win against a well-coached but shorthanded Flint Hill team at home at Beaver Creek Country Club, but suffered three close, tough defeats at the hands of GDS, Saint Andrew’s, and Maret, and a blowout loss to eventual MAC Tournament champion Potomac on the championship course.

In retrospect, our early

September defeat of this year’s public school 2A/1A state tournament finalist, Linganore High School, which lost the state title in a 4-hole playoff in early November, was the signature victory for the 2019 season. Only one of

our six players had played at Musket Ridge Golf Club previously, and we defeated Linganore and Tuscarora by a score of 172-176-182 (lowest score wins). In this key match, Fifth Former Frankie Corsi took co-medalist

honors for low individual score with Linganore’s top player, and our #2 player, Fourth Former Benson Riser, finished only one stroke off the lead in third place. Saint James’ #3 and #4 players – including Sixth Former Will Hertel – carried us to victory as each beat or tied Linganore’s next best three golfers. While the Linganore victory was perhaps our signature “W,” our team’s best performances came in a second win against Goretti where the Saints tallied just 167 strokes at Beaver Creek in mid-September and in the very next match against Boonsboro at Black Rock Golf Course, where all five of the starters scored in the 40’s in another close loss.

With the exception

of Fifth Former John Gilbert Storey, who shot an impressive 39 last year against GDS, each of our players beat or tied their previous low score for 9-holes at some point this season. Corsi shot the previously mentioned score of 40 several times this season, while Riser matched Corsi at that same number at Bretton Woods against GDS. Hertel offered his best score of the season – a 42 – in the second Goretti match, while Fourth Former Reichen Storey carded a 43 – an astounding 27 strokes better than his firstever golf match

in late August – against Boonsboro. John Gilbert Storey’s low round of 42 came against Mercersburg at Whitetail Golf Resort.

In reaching these milestones, Corsi took medalist or co-medalist honors – again, first place overall – in three matches, and led the team in scoring in 2019. Riser

took medalist honors in the first match of the year at Fountain Head Country Club while improving his stroke average by an astounding 5.34 strokes compared to last season.

With the anticipated return of four starters in 2020, the Saints’ potential once again appears bright!

Legendary Coach John Wooden said, “Success is a piece of mind which is a direct result of selfsatisfaction in knowing you did your best to become the best you are capable of becoming.”

That is what the Saint James Girls’ Varsity Soccer team dwelled on for the 2019 season. With new head coach, Breezy Kretzer, and many new players, this team started laying a new foundation to move forward. The season had its ups and downs but by the end of the season this team figured out what they are capable of becoming.

The team welcomed in a bunch of newcomers.

Danielle Brown (Second Form), Lily Cucuzzella (Third Form), Mackenzie Grossnickle (Third Form), Deja Hamilton (Fourth Form), Quinn Nguyen (Third Form), Dokyung Oh (Fourth Form), and Nina Ross (Third Form). They quickly learned what it would be like joining a varsity sport and found

their place among the rest of the team.

The season started off strong with win in a scrimmage against Williamsport High School, but soon after the team struggled to win games and the Saints ended with a record of 2-10-2.

Although the season does not look great on paper, this team learned that they are more than that. The team defined John Wooden’s quote of success during one of the last games of the season.

The team traveled to play Catoctin High School at the end of October on a very cold and windy night. The game did not start great for the Saints as they saw themselves trailing 5-0 at the half.

Instead of getting upset with each other, the team stuck together and remained positive. The

beginning of the second half the team was behind 6-0 when the Saints were awarded a penalty kick.

Alli Jacobson (Fifth Form) got the Saints on the scoreboard and made it 6-1. Not soon after the Catoctin Cougars scored a penalty kick and the score was 7-1. With a lot of time still to play, Jacobson scored again and made it 7-2. Later on the Saints got a corner kick and newcomer Quinn Nguyen used the wind and scored from the kick to make it 7-3. Nguyen would record another goal and Jacobson two more to make the score 7-6 with five minutes left to play.

With the team working together to come back, Captain Maya Drabczyk (Sixth Form) received the ball out wide and scored from 30 yards out to even the score and send the

| chalk talk | game into overtime. Both teams played into a second overtime period and with the wind on the Saints backs, Jacobson scored the golden goal and the Saints won the game. This game showed what this program is capable of and what is to come in the next season.

This team was built up with a lot great individuals to form an amazing team.

Our defense was formed with our goalkeeper Isabella Bottner (Fifth Form); Captains Samantha Brown (Sixth Form) and Abigail Barnes (Sixth Form) as our center backs; Kali Mahoney (Fourth Form) and Sabina Noel (Third Form) played as our outside defense; and newcomers Brown, Oh, and Hamilton saw the field as outside defenders as well. Hamilton started the season never having played soccer before and by the end of the season she amazed everyone with her skills and ability to play as an outside back.

She also demonstrated a will to win and fight for

the team and because of this she received the Most Improved Player recognition.

Our midfield comprised of Drabczyk, Lauren Aguila (Fifth Form), Zoe Schlotterbeck (Fourth Form), Amelia Shaw (Fifth Form), Veronica Noel (Third Form), Ross, Cucuzzella, and Emily Vando (Fourth Form).

Schlotterbeck recorded one goal and two assists, while Noel recorded one goal. Drabczyk received the Coaches’ recognition because of her amazing and honest leadership on and off the field. Drabczyk also scored two goals and had four assists.

Our forwards were made up of Captain Angie Antoine (Sixth Form), Captain Skylar Treadwell

(Sixth Form), Jacobson, Nguyen, and Grossnickle.

Treadwell was lethal in free kicks this season and scored four goals and had two assists. Rookie Nguyen tallied four goals this season. Jacobson received the Most Valuable Player recognition for scoring 11 goals and four assists.

Remember success is not defined by your wins or your losses. Your

value as a human being is not defined by your accomplishments. Your success is defined by a peace of mind that you did your very best to become what you are capable of becoming. I am proud of our team for always carrying this lesson with them.

The 2019 Varsity Boys’ Soccer season was filled with peaks and valleys. It began with the traditional challenges of Welcome Week. Students coming back from summer vacation with varying levels of conditioning.

Some having played and practiced consistently since last fall and others touching a soccer ball for the first time in months.

It also brings new and veteran players to the pitch vying for a spot. All with hope and expectations for making the team.

team of Matt Snyder, Ben Heebner and Chris Plumadore back for a second year. After a tough week of multiple practices a day, some players rose to the challenge and some didn’t.

Eventually some tough decisions were made, and the final varsity roster was set. The roster was filled out with returners: Sixth Formers Owen Horrigan, Thomas Bacon, Austin Grandstaff, Gerardo

“Gerry” Tejado, Caleb Norris, Bryce Kilmer, Griffin Almany, Tom Hoang, Sertcan Berke, Martynas Sabaliauskas, and Tank Yanou; Fifth Former Nash Pena; and Fourth Formers Felipe Avellandeda and Zachary Zanetti. New additions to the team were Sixth Formers Nathan

Nguyen and Jamie Mahoney; Fifth Formers Jaka Prevodnik, Khoi Nguyen, Isaac Akinniyi, and Evan Ndahiro; and Third Formers Bruno de Lozanne, Phillip Aguila, and William McMillan.

With the team set, players and coaches were looking to build upon the foundations established

during the 2018 season.

The task would prove to be difficult but not without successes. The 2019 season would be the first season in several years that the team would have a full MAC schedule— playing each MAC team at home and away. This presented a daunting task for the players and coaches considering the team had not beaten a MAC foe in about ten years.

The team started its season playing MAC powerhouse St. Andrews at home. Unfortunately, they suffered a frustrating loss. However, this loss was followed up with a well-fought 2-1 win against Williamsport at home. Over the next several weeks, the team lost against South Hagerstown High School, Georgetown Day School, Potomac, Flint Hill, and Sidwell Friends. They

picked up victories against Fannett Metal and Berkley Springs.

Then on September 26, on a turf field in Washington D.C., the team changed history and put the MAC on notice.

The Saints earned a hardfought, decisive win over Maret thanks to strong play from goalkeeper Prevodnik and the Saints defense lead by Horrigan, Norris, Almany, and Khoi Nguyen. The first 10 minutes were all the Fighting Frogs. Prevodnik was peppered with shots, stopping each attempt in amazing fashion.

Eventually, Maret broke through to take the lead.

Once the Saints settled down, the momentum began to shift towards the maroon and white. With the defense now playing their best game of the year and Prevodnik playing like a man possessed between

the pipes, the Saint James offensive attack was free to press for goals. The first goal came on a great sequence of passes that started from the back.

Horrigan connected with Kilmer who fed the ball to a streaking Grandstaff.

Grandstaff beat his man to the end line and centered the ball against the grain of the defense, finding Kilmer alone in front of the net. Kilmer's shot found Zanetti for the tap in, and the Saints tied the game at 1-1. The second goal was the result of a nice play by super sub Ndahiro, who flicked the ball over his man and found Kilmer open just outside the 18-yard box. Kilmer hit an absolute beauty of shot from distance that caromed off the goal post, past the outstretched hand of the keeper, and into the back of the net. The Saints defense held fast and the

team earned a signature win, 2-1, in thrilling fashion. It was the team’s first MAC win in ten years!

The team went on to finish the season with a 6-14 record and played in its first MAC playoffs in years. They entered as the bottom seed and played the number-two seed Potomac. They played a great first half with the score tied at zero.

Ultimately, they were unable to win the game and finished the season with the loss.

As the team looks forward to the future, we say goodbye to our Sixth Formers, Horrigan, Berke, Bacon, Grandstaff, Tejado, Norris, Almany, Hoang, Yanou, Mahoney, Nguyen, and Sabaliauskas.

We also look forward to building on the successes of the 2019 season.

Varsity Volleyball Coach Terri Pryor MVP: Gabby Grantham-Medley MIP: Michaela Siegel Coaches’ Award: Kayla Turner

The season started off with the Saints under the leadership of a new head coach, Terri Pryor, and assistant coach, Brooke Crawford. Coach Pryor and Crawford’s focus for the whole season was on mental toughness. The volleyball squad was small, with only nine players, one of whom was a JV player who helped the varsity team out as needed.

With a short bench, everyone on the team saw significant playing time.

Leading the Saints were our four returning Sixth Formers: Nelly Xie, a defensive specialist;

Hannah Moerschel, a rightside hitter; Michaela Siegel, a libero; and Morgan Moseley, a middle blocker. The two Fourth Formers on the squad were Emily Zhu, a defensive specialist who also played JV, and Catherine Charlton, an outside/ right side hitter and setter.

Three Third Formers rounded out the varsity squad: Pennie Willis, a right side/outside hitter;

Kayla Turner, a middle blocker; and Gabby Grantham-Medley, an outside hitter and setter.

The first thing the coaches needed to do was identify new setters to fill that vacated position.

Very quickly the coaches identified both GranthamMedley and Charlton as two very good options, which would allow the team to be versatile enough to keep six hitters.

Both setters held their own, as they did a great job taking on a new skill and working outside of their comfort zones. Charlton had 450 setting attempts with 103 assists for the season and Gabby Medley had 383 setting attempts with 107 assists for the season.

We ran a 6-2 line up that worked very well.

Our middles, Turner and Moseley, were a blocking force not to be reckoned

with. Turner, only a third former, had 46 total blocks for the season, and Moseley had 43.

Not much got past them without being blocked or touched. Our put-away hitters on the outside were Grantham-Medley, Willis, and Charlton, giving us Moerschel as our kill-shot player on the right. Our defensive specialist was Xie and Siegel was our libero. The libero is also a defensive specialist who cannot block or attack the ball when it is entirely above net height. When the ball is not in play, the libero can replace any back-row player, without prior notice to the officials. You will notice the libero because she wears a contrasting jersey color from her teammates.

As the season started, we figured out that our weaknesses were team cohesiveness, court

awareness and team passing, which we set to work on improving. At the beginning of the season, our passing percentage was less than 40 percent but by the end of the season the team stats were much higher, with team passing above 75 percent.

Willis, Xie, Moseley, and Grantham-Medley were all passing above 70 percent with Siegel passing over 80 percent. Both Xie and Siegel really stepped it up on defense. Xie became a very important part of our defense on the left side, picking up some tough hits, and Siegel earned her spot in middle back where she received more than 65 percent of all hits and serves.

Our serving was consistently strong all season, with all players serving above 80 percent.

Wilis, Xie, Siegel, and

Turner all had serving percentages in the eighties.

Grantham-Medley, Charlton, Moerschel, and Moseley had serving percentages in the nineties.

Our hitting percentage was also very solid, with Moerschel, Willis, Turner, Grantham-Medley, and Moseley all hitting in the 80-percent range. Our kill leaders were Turner with 55, Moseley with 56, and Grantham-Medley with 104 total kills.

The Lady Saints ended the season with 27 set wins and 33 set losses. Even though the season was less than .500, the team as a whole improved 150 percent. We played some tough teams in Goretti, South Hagerstown, Hedgesville, and Clear Spring. Even though we did not win against those teams, we held our own

and the games were close, even taking many sets from them.

We ended the season taking second place in the Mercersburg Academy tournament, where we lost in the finals against Goretti.

Our team award winners this year were: Most

Improved Player, Michaela Siegel; Coaches’ Award, Kayla Turner; and Most Valuable Player, Gabby Grantham-Medley.

The Saints have many talented young players and we are excited for what next year will bring.

Hal continued his education and played lacrosse at Sewanee: The University of the South, where he set records for the Tigers, was named All-SAA First Team three consecutive years, and was captain of the 2015 SAA Champion squad.

He graduated cum laude with a BA degree in history and a minor in political science.

Hal found that the time management habits instilled by Saint James’ rigorous schedule were instrumental in his transition to college life.

“Boarding school fosters a healthy sense of independence that is important for adjusting to living away from home,” he said.

Hal said another important lesson he learned at Saint James is that ‘failure is good’ as you are encouraged to try things outside of your comfort zone.

“Saint James provides a safe and supportive environment to be comfortable with trying new things

and the right mindset to deal with setbacks,” he said.

Hal is currently the Associate Media Director at Realtime Media, a startup digital advertising agency in Manhattan. He previously worked for a political consulting firm in Washington. D.C., executing digital media buying campaigns for senatorial, gubernatorial, and congressional races.

“Being a good team player and having strong leadership skills are extremely important in the professional world—skills that are best honed on the playing field and not in the classroom,” Hal said.

Randy Screen retired from BB&T Insurance Holdings, Inc. in Raleigh, NC on June 30th of this year, ending a 41 year insurance career.

Aaron Chatkin is excited to announce that he has retired after spending 33 years in Manufacturing Operations Finance. For the last 25 years, he served as a Controller for TE Connectivity. He and his wife, Dawn, will remain in Gastonia, NC. The future will continue to include friends, traveling, hiking, and enjoying “every day being Saturday”!

Kristen (DiGirolamo) Walsh and her husband Davis welcomed their second daughter, Madelyn "Maddie" Rose Walsh on April 30, 2019. She joins big sister Emma.

Luke Hilton and his wife Aly welcomed a daughter, Claire Michelle Hilton, on July 25.

She joins big brothers Joshua and Connor.

Kathryn Davis DeLoose and Chris DeLoose welcomed their first child, Davis Henry DeLoose on July 12, 2019.

Claire O'Connell moved to Jackson Hole, WY in September and is working for the St. John’s Hospital Foundation as the Marketing and Special Events Manager.

Her team is finishing a capital campaign in which $19.2 million was raised for a new senior living center. Claire credits the phone-a-thon with Father Dunnan her senior year as her first fundraising experience!

Morgan Stephens married Dylan Stoneham on September 7 in Chatham, MA. They were married at Saint Christopher's Episcopal Church and had the reception at Eastward Ho Country Club. SJS friends, including Mr. and Mrs. Batson, were in attendance. The new Mr. and Mrs. Stoneham reside in Raleigh, NC.

Hannah Lee was inducted into the Order of the Gown at Sewanee: The University of the South in September 2019. Members of the Order wear their gown as a badge of academic distinction, and are charged with the maintenance and promotion of the spirit, traditions, and ideals of the University.

In Memoriam Lt. Col. John M. Caffery, III '58 of Conroe, TX passed away on June 26, 2019. John is survived by his wife of 25 years Susan McLarin Caffery, daughter Elizabeth Caffery Kowalik (Wayne), granddaughter Morgan Farrar, sister Hannah Caffery Cox, and stepsons Charles Christopher Johnson (Audrey) and Jonathan Glen Johnson (Katie) and their four children.

Albert L. Wallace, III '67 passed away on October 18. He is survived by this loving wife, Donna, and his two children, Surely and Albert, his sister Joan, and many of Donna’s grandchildren who call him grandpa. He was featured in the Spring 2016 Review for his hike on the Pacific Crest Trail.

Colton Repp '16 passed away on September 1. He is survived by his loving family: Jeremy, Sara, Cortney, Cylie, Nathan, and Elias.

Class Notes In Memoriam (Con't) Edward W. Harris, Jr., father of E. Wesley Harris, III '81 passed away on April 18, 2019. Rae C. Harris, Wesley's mother, passed away on March 30, 2017. The Harris' were loyal supporters of Saint James, giving to the Annual Fund for more than 20 consecutive years. They are survived by Wesley and his wife Suzanne and granddaughter Anica Harris.

Dr. Gary S. Grover, father of Arvin S. Grover '06, passed away in January 2018. He is survived by his loving wife and two sons.

Nana Akua, the mother of Kofi Agyeman '17 and Abena Agyeman '14, passed away in August 2019 at the age of 49.

Dr. George C. Newman, II, past parent and Trustee Emeritus, passed away on July 21, 2019. He is survived by his wife of 47 years Judy Newman; daughter, Dr. Megan J. Troischt and husband, Dr. Taylor Troischt of Morgantown, WV; son, Geordie C. Newman III '93 and wife, Miranda of Hagerstown, MD; grandchildren, Emma S. Troischt, William H. Troischt, Tucker Newman and Charlotte E. Newman; sister, Clara Buck; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Read Geordie's tribute to his father on page 30.

Jane Howard-Jasper, mother of James M. Jasper '75, died of a stroke June 19th, 2019. Her ashes will be interred at the Darnestown Presbyterian Church on June 27th, 2020.

Carew C. Lee, wife of Robert E. Lee, IV, former SJS trustee, and stepmother of Robert E. Lee, V, ’82, passed away in May 2019.

Carl Brindley, step-father of former school nurse Aimee Deweese passed away in November at age 67.

The Revd. Milo G. Coerper Trustee Emeritus

The Revd. Milo G. Coerper, Trustee Emeritus and friend of Saint James, passed away at his home in Chevy Chase, MD on July 20, 2019.

Father Coerper was born and raised in Milwaukee, WI. He graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy with the Class of 1947 and served in the Navy for three years. He then entered the University of Michigan Law School.

He returned to naval service during the Korean War where he met Ensign Wendy Hicks in Norfolk, VA. They were married at the Norfolk Naval Base Chapel in 1953. Milo completed law school in 1954 and began practicing in Washington, DC. He earned a PhD in political science and philosophy from Georgetown University.

In 1960, he joined the international law firm Coudert Brothers, eventually becoming managing partner in Washington. His international clients included German interests in wine and steel for which work he was honored with the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany.

While still practicing law, Milo was ordained an

Episcopal priest and served a small parish in Clear Spring, MD. He later became a voluntary chaplain at the Washington National Cathedral where he helped establish the Center for Prayer and Pilgrimage. He helped found and served several other Christian organizations and served on several boards, including at Saint James School.

He is survived by his wife of 66 years, Wendy Hicks Coerper; sister Vicky Hampshire of Millbridge, ME; son, Milo W. “Kip” Coerper and wife Becky Coerper of Skeneateles, NY; daughters Allison Lee Coerper of Chevy Chase, MD and Lois C. Randall and husband Michael Osborn of Southport, NC; five grandchildren: Jeremy, Ben, Claire (SJS '07), Riley, and Quinn; and three greatgrandchildren, Drayden, Rosemary and Dylan.

Saint James Seeks 2020 Award Nominations During Alumni Weekend, the Alumni Council hosts a dinner and awards ceremony in honor of SJS alumni.

Three awards may be presented: the Alumni Award, the Exceptional Service Award, and the Kerfoot Society for Distinguished Faculty—all sponsored by the Alumni Council. We invite alumni to nominate deserving candidates. Below is information about each award.

Alumni Award

Each year, the Saint James School Alumni Council honors alumni who have distinguished themselves with outstanding service to the School and to society. Alumni of the School may nominate candidates for this award.

Nomination and selection criteria include: • Active service to the School. For example, someone who served, or serves as a Class Agent, Trustee, or Alumni Council Member • Or, active leadership with the School. For example, someone who has helped plan an Alumni Weekend or other alumni events; or, someone who has helped lead fundraising efforts (i.e., for the School's Annual Fund, Endowment, or Capital Campaign)

Exceptional Service Award

The Exceptional Service Award honors individuals who have provided exceptional service to the School and its alumni. Nominees do not need to be alumni or faculty of the School. The award is presented at the discretion of the Alumni Council. Nominations are considered on an annual basis. Both current and previous faculty and staff members are eligible for this award. Alumni and friends of the School may nominate candidates for this award.

Kerfoot Society for Distinguished Faculty

Established to recognize faculty members who distinguished themselves above and beyond the call of duty, the Kerfoot Society for Distinguished Faculty was originally suggested by Jeremy H. Biggs '54 when he served as President and Chairman of the Board of Trustees. He expressed that "a good part of the soul of the School is, and always has been, the wonderful and longserving faculty who have been important to its history and to the lives of its students."
