| around campus | Welcome Week The 2018-2019 school year kicked off with move-in day on August 18 followed by Welcome Week, during which students became familiar with their new schedule and classes, prepared for the fall sports season, and participated in fun activities, such as jousting, a Velcro wall, and a trip to SkyZone. We welcomed back 164 returning students and 70 new students, representing 15

countries and 13 states. This diversity adds perspective to every aspect of life and learning at Saint James, and prepares students to lead in a global world. We also have the highest percentage of female students (45%, 105 girls) in the School's history, and over the summer our maintenance team worked hard to transform Onderdonk Hall into a girls dormitory to accommodate this growth.

Honor Code Signing On August 29, students and faculty gathered in the chapel to sign the Saint James Honor Code which states, "I will not lie, cheat, or steal, and I will report anyone I witness doing any of the three." This annual tradition is what makes the Saint James culture of trust and mutual respect possible.

Prior to the signing, Senior Prefect Jordan Walendom gave a chapel talk on the importance of the honor code to the SJS community.

"It is through our virtues of pride, integrity, and selfrespect championed through our honor code that makes this environment possible," he said. "The community identity at Saint James—the foundation of what allows students to excel academically, artistically, athletically, and socially—is grounded in the honor code."

SJS Named #1 Christian High School in Maryland

Saint James Chapel Choir Welcomes New Choristers On September 12, new choristers were commissioned into the Saint James Chapel Choir. One of the finest chapel choirs in the country, the choristers lead twice weekly services of Holy Eucharist and Sunday evening Compline, a student-led service. They also sing regionally at area parishes and cathedrals, and on spring break or winter weekend trips.

Saint James School is proud to be named the #1 Christian high school in Maryland by Niche, a school ranking and review site. The School is also ranked #10 (out of 114) of the best private high schools in Maryland.

Our Episcopal character is a vital complement to a broad-based liberal arts foundation and to developing a worldview that nurtures students' potential to be leaders for good in the world.

Soccer Team Volunteers at Muddy Mamas Race

On Friday, September 14, members of the Girls' Varsity Soccer team ran, climbed, crawled, and splashed through the Muddy Mamas obstacle course. The following day, the team, along with many other SJS students, volunteered at the Muddy Mamas Race, an event designed to bring awareness to issues facing girls/ women today: physical health and fitness including getting children active, building self-esteem, and promoting overall well-being.

"It was a win-win to be able to run

the course and to volunteer," said Girls' Soccer Head Coach Laurie Douglass. "The kids had a great time."

Muddy Mamas is an untimed obstacle course (almost a 5k) with mud just for girls/women held at the Washington County Agricultural Education Center each year. Two area organizations, Girls Incorporated of Washington County and Girls on the Run, partner to promote, manage, and ultimately benefit from this fundraiser. There

are 19 different muddy obstacles to challenge you along the course.

As part of their volunteer duty during the race, the students worked at a sneaker recycling center, hosing off participants and collecting discarded shoes. They were also stationed around the course to cheer on participants and give them tips for completing the obstacles.

"It was a great opportunity for team bonding and getting students out of their comfort zones," said Douglass.

College Counseling Event Series Brings College Admissions Experts to Saint James Campus This fall, the SJS College Counseling office was pleased to offer a series of programs for all Saint James students and families. Mr. Robert Harry, Director of College Counseling, planned the programs with the aim of building a current college admissions knowledge base within our community.

"Given that formal meetings and individualized planning sessions do not start until January of the fifth form year, it was my hope that these events would lay the groundwork for productive conversations among families and students outside of the school day," he said.

The series included four programs on a variety of topics relevant to the SJS community: • Considering College Athletic Recruitment: Information for Prospective Athletes and Families with Kathy Phillips, Associate Dean of Admission, Duke University and Admissions Liaison for Duke Athletics; • 2020 and Beyond: Preparing for College Admissions in the Future with Heidi Frye, Associate Director of Admission, Gettysburg College; Dylan Keene, Senior Admission Advisor, Emory University; and Kristen Pantazes, Associate Director of Admission, University of Pennsylvania; • All About Financial Aid: What Families Need to Know with Chad Spencer, Senior Associate Dean of Admission and Financial Aid, Davidson College; • The State of College Admissions: An Interactive Q&A with Julie Kerich, Director of Admission, Franklin & Marshall College, and Taylor Duvall, Admission Counselor, University of Maryland, College Park

In addition, prior to their panel discussion, the college representatives from Emory University, Gettysburg College, and the University of Pennsylvania held an essay-writing workshop with our sixth form students that focused on common pitfalls in essay writing, Common Application essay prompts, and college-specific supplementary essays.

"This was a great opportunity for our families to have access to up-to-date college information as well as the opportunity to ask questions of college admissions officers who read our students' applications," said Mr. Harry. "Events like these have the potential to create a wider dialogue regarding the academic, extracurricular, and financial preparation necessary for successful college applications in the future. I am thankful to the students and families who attended these valuable sessions."

Saint James Welcomes Three New Staff Members Ms. Molly Billings Chemistry Teacher Molly Billings arrives at Saint James with experience in both education and camps.

As a student at Wooster College in Ohio, she earned her B.A. in Chemistry, bolstered by a minor in Environmental Studies. Most recently, she taught Chemistry as part of her teaching fellowship at Cascade, Idaho’s Alzar School, where she also contributed as member of the residential life program. While still at Wooster, she gained classroom experience with several age groups as a studentteacher. A lover of the outdoors, Ms. Billings spent three summers in Maine leading wilderness trips for a girls’ camp. At Saint James, she teaches Chemistry and lives in Onderdonk, serving on the duty staff for the newly-converted girls dormitory. In the fall, she demonstrated her value as a new member of the cross country coaching staff. Of her coaching experience, she says, “I feel really lucky to have coached cross country and had the opportunity to get to know my chemistry students outside of the classroom. It was also great to quickly get to know a handful of other students whom I don’t have in class.” Ms. Billings shares her apartment in Onderdonk with her Nova Scotia Duck Tolling retriever, Zoe. Ms. Billings and Zoe have competed in obedience and agility shows in Florida and throughout New England.

Ms. Lauren Lewis Senior Associate Director of Enrollment Management Lauren Lewis joins the Saint James admission staff with ample experience in both independent schools and admissions. This is her eleventh year working in school admissions, and her eighth in boarding schools. Most recently, Ms. Lewis was the Director of Admissions and Financial Aid at Tatnall School in Wilmington, DE. At Saint James, she takes on the role of Senior Associate Director of Enrollment Management and serves on the duty staff of Coors dormitory, where she builds community with our younger girls. Her mother also worked in admissions, which helped direct her to the career path herself. Ms. Lewis emphasizes the value of working at a small boarding school like Saint James as an admissions representative, where she is able to get to know students individually at level that she might not at a larger or day school. She also finds the unique character of Saint James a powerful tool in presenting the school to future students: “I enjoy sharing with prospective families the traditions of Saint James such as our daily chapel service and family style meals.” Ms. Lewis has a background in dance—trained for ballet but also interested in choreography. She enjoys sports of all kinds, especially college football, and relishes opportunities to cook, travel, and spend time with family when she is not busily recruiting the next generation of Saint James students.

| around campus | Mr. Anthony Puca Math and Spanish Teacher The multi-talented Anthony Puca joins Saint James as a member of both the Math and Language departments. He teaches two sections of Spanish I and two sections of Geometry. As a member of the residential staff in Claggett, our largest dormitory, he is the hallmaster for Maddox Hall. In the winter, Mr. Puca will join the coaching staff for the wrestling team—a role for which he was well prepared as four-year varsity wrestler and team captain while a student at Gettysburg College in Pennsylvania. During his time at Gettysburg, he earned a B.S. in Mathematical Economics and a BA in Spanish, as well and serving as the president of the campus chapter of the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Regarding his pathway to teaching, Mr. Puca says, “Some of my high school teachers had such a great impact on my life, and now I get to pay that forward and I am having a great time doing it.” He also praises the warmth of the Saint James community boarding environment, noting that, “I feel like I’ve known everyone here for years, as opposed to just three months.” While Mr. Puca’s reputation on the wrestling mat precedes him, most don’t know that he has completed two half-marathons, one in Lisbon, Portugal and another in Gettysburg, PA. In his free time he likes to read, cook, and write.

Introducing the New Saint James School Trustees Karen Beardsley is the mother of two SJS alumni: Henry Brainard Warner ’09 and Nicholas Beardsley ’09. She is also the aunt of recent alumna Nicolette Ferris ‘18. Mrs. Beardsley holds a B.A. in History from Georgetown Mrs. Karen Beardsley University and worked as a teacher and co-director at the Outdoor Nursery School in Chevy Chase, Maryland, from 19962011. Karen has served as a trustee of the Ferris Family Foundation since 2006, has been a member of the Noyes Children's Library Foundation Board since 1993, and has served on the Holton-Arms School Alumnae Board for several terms. Karen and her husband, Jim, began their enthusiastic support of Saint James when their boys were students at SJS. They attended athletic events, school functions, and Chapel services, and were active members of the Parents’ Association from 20052009. Karen is a long-time supporter of the School and is pleased to be a member of the Board.

Tao Zhang is the father of recent SJS alumnus Neil Zhang ‘18. Mr. Zhang earned a B.S. in Electrical Engineering and an M.S. in Finance from Tsinghua University in Beijing. He also holds an M.A. and a Ph.D. in International Economics from the University Mr. Tao Zhang of California, Santa Cruz. Tao is currently an Economist and Deputy Managing Director of the International Monetary Fund in Washington, D.C. He served as Deputy Governor and Director General of the People’s Bank of China from 20042016. He was a founding member of the China Finance 40 Forum in 2008, and was vice-chairman of the China National Association of Statistics from 2010-2015. Mr. Zhang is married to Mrs. Minqi (Claire) Zeng, and they have residences in McLean, Virginia, and Beijing, China. Tao and Claire helped host Father Dunnan during his visit to Beijing in June 2016 and have been active supporters of the School.

Two New Programs Enhance SJS Mission of Building Leaders for Good This year, Saint James has introduced two new programs that challenge our students and enhance the non-academic aspects of our School. The Fifth Form Leadership Retreat is designed to give students the opportunity to further develop their leadership skills before they take senior roles on campus in their sixth form year. Choices and Connections is a new program aimed to promote healthy choices and life skills for our second through fourth form students. Read on to learn more about each program.

Taking Leadership to New Heights Climbing. Jumping. Swinging. Soaring. At the Fifth Form Leadership Retreat, students pushed themselves and tested their limits at Cedar Ridge Adventures in an effort to learn more about themselves as well as how to interact with and lead one another.

The fifth form class was broken up into three small groups (16-17 students in each) who then traveled to Cedar Ridge on separate days to complete a set of challenges. The two-day retreat was made up of low-element team building activities as well as high-ropes course challenges.

“We had people challenge themselves, and take leadership roles within the group,” said Mr. Steve Lachut, Dean of Students. “It was really quite impressive.”

Mr. Lachut is spearheading the effort to formalize leadership education at Saint James.

“We have the mission of ‘building leaders for good,’ and when I stepped into my new role as Dean of Students [last year], I recognized that leadership doesn’t just happen,” he said. “Although there are leadership roles on campus, students

need more opportunities to develop those skills.”

Many of the leadership positions go to sixth formers, and so the goal of a fifth form retreat is to give those students the skills they need before they step into those roles.

“They are going to have the ability to guide the direction of the school next year, and they seem to have really taken to that concept,” said Mr. Lachut.

Both low and high ropes courses are great for developing leadership skills because students are pushed out of their comfort zones, must communicate with and rely on their peers, and must find their voice to complete a challenge, which leads to a sense of empowerment.

Fifth former Ben Couling found the high ropes challenge where they had to walk across a platform attached to a rope with fellow students supporting them to be the highlight of his day.

“It was terrifying, but so rewarding at the end. It was a real team effort,” he said.

Couling said he was more nervous than he thought he would be, and was surprised by his classmates—many of whom were scared but everybody faced that fear and completed the challenges.

“I was put in a situation where I was uncomfortable, but I was able to overcome my fear and do it,” he said.

“This left me feeling confident and I think that will help me later on, to overcome my nerves and know I can get through it. Just don’t look down.”

a specific topic that was covered in small group settings facilitated by a faculty member.

Mr. Lachut said the initial interest in developing this program came after he attended a conference and recognized that the School could do more about addressing issues outside of academics, athletics, and arts.

“We want to talk to our students in depth about issues they face,” he said. “We want to challenge them with how they interact with one another, and how their actions affect others.”

The sessions were planned by Mr. Lachut and Ms. Angie Sievers, school counselor. During the first meeting, second and third formers discussed sleep habits, mindfulness, and nutrition, while fourth formers spent time on group dynamics and how to have effective group conversations. The second meeting focused on peer-topeer relationships and romantic relationships for the second and third formers, and happiness and belonging for fourth formers. During the final meeting, all forms discussed the effects of drug and alcohol use and ways teenagers can deal with peer pressure.

“Our faculty have been very supportive of the program, and happy to address these issues,” said Mr. Lachut. “It also gives them a chance to interact with students they don’t always see in class.”

Mr. Lachut feels the Choices and Connections program and the Fifth Form Leadership Retreat went well in their first year, and he looks to grow both programs.

“We’re going to get feedback and develop a more indepth program,” he said. “My hope is to enhance our residential life and leadership curriculum.”

Life Lessons Choices and Connections was a series of three oncampus meetings during which discussions were held on a variety of social issues that face our students both on campus and at home. This program was designed for our second through fourth form students. Each meeting had

The new 22,000-square foot, state-of-theart center is located behind Claggett Hall, overlooking the Bai Yuka. The new building will house our art and music programs. Students Attend Diversity Conference A group of Saint James students attended the Baltimore Student Diversity Leadership Conference on Saturday, November 10. The conference develops high school student leaders in the areas of diversity, inclusion, equity, and justice. This grassroots conference has existed for over twenty years under the dedicated leadership of teachers and students who are a part of the Association of Independent Maryland & DC Schools (AIMS).

Mark Spicher '19 Learns About Saving Guatemala's Cloud Forests “Come as you are but don’t leave as you came.” This was a central theme during sixth former Mark Spicher’s week-long summer trip to Guatemala where he spent time with the Community Cloud Forest Conservation (CCFC).

CCFC works to alleviate poverty and protect cloud forests through education, reforestation, academic scholarships, agricultural development, food security, income generation, and community development in approximately 110 villages in Guatemala’s central highlands.

“CCFC has educational programs for women from the villages, where they stay for a few weeks and learn about the best crops to grow, crop rotation, how to plant without destroying the forests, and how to use the trees to your benefit,” said Mark.

Cloud forests are like rain forests in that they generally receive high

levels of precipitation. Both rain forests and cloud forests produce their own precipitation. The difference is that with cloud forests, much of that precipitation comes directly from the clouds that filter through the trees.

Less than two percent of Guatemala is cloud forest, but they account for a much larger percentage of Guatemala’s water. The cloud forests are being lost as farmers use the “slash and burn” technique to clear land. This leaves the soil less fertile than before, and it isn’t long before farmers are forced even higher up the mountain in search of more fertile soil.

CCFC reforestation projects are grass roots initiatives, getting “buy in” from village families through education, field trips, and job opportunities. They are educated about the importance of the cloud forest.

people, including his mother Sabina, SJS parent Jeff Quelet, and SJS alumni parent Diana Gaviria. They spent most of their time at CCFC’s agro-ecology center, which runs on hydroelectric energy and has sawdust toilets. They also stayed one night in a remote village with the Q’eqchi Maya people who are native to the area.

“The most interesting part of the trip was staying in the village for the night. It was nerve-wracking because we didn’t speak the same language [they speak Q’eqchi],” said Mark.

“It helped that I had three years of Spanish here, and one of the men worked in Guatemala City so he spoke Spanish as well.”

Mark said they spent time playing soccer and volleyball with the children in the village, who were shy at first but enjoyed playing with his phone. They also went on a few challenging hikes that led to spectacular views in the mountainous region.

Mark said the village was selfsustaining, with the villagers relying on themselves for everything they need.

“It was such a different culture.

They were so proud of what they had, even though it wasn’t much,” said Mark. “It made me feel more thankful seeing firsthand how much they appreciate what they have.”

Emily Zhu '21 Works on Behalf of an Indigenous Population in China SJS fourth former Emily Zhu spent several weeks over the summer volunteering with an organization called Nest in the beautiful mountains of the Guizhou province in southwestern China, more than 900 miles from her home in Shanghai.

Emily worked on behalf of the Ge people, an indigenous group with a population of 125,000 not officially recognized by the Chinese government. Including the Han majority, the Chinese government recognizes 56 peoples of ethnic minorities, but the Ge are considered a sub-group of the Miao people. Having constant conflict with their neighboring Miao, they wish for a separate identity and believe with their unique custom and traditional practices, they are a distinct ethnic group.

“My biggest concern is how they are living within a majority culture (Han) and how their daily life is being interfered,” Emily said. “The younger people are leaving the villages to make money, and they are concerned about being able to preserve their culture.”

This was the second summer Emily spent studying the Ge people, visiting their villages to learn about their culture. There were 5-6 other students involved in the program with the ultimate goal of getting this population recognized by the government.

“In my first year we wrote an essay

about the Ge people,” Emily said.

“How they are different, their political views, and what they want people to know about them. This year, we learned more about how tourism is affecting them.”

To draw attention to their cause, the Ge have found that an increased production of their handicrafts attracts tourism and an awareness of their ethnic uniqueness.

HUNTER STRAUCH '14 FINDS COMMERCIAL SUCCESS Alumnus Places Third in Coca-Cola Regal Films Contest If you saw a movie at Regal Cinemas in October or November, chances are you watched a CocaCola commercial prior to your feature film that was produced by Saint James graduate Hunter Strauch ’14. Strauch returned to the SJS campus in September to meet with students interested in television and film, and discussed the process for making the 35-second commercial.

This past year, his senior year at Elon University, Strauch and fellow Elon student Patrick Wei entered the Coca-Cola Regal Films contest, ultimately placing third in the competition with the commercial airing in theaters nationwide from October 12-November 27.

The contest provided an opportunity for upand-coming film students to showcase their talent, with more than 450 scripts entered from some of the country’s top film schools. The scripts were

narrowed down to the top 15, at which point those chosen got to work with Coca-Cola to storyboard their script. At the end of that process, those with the most potential were narrowed down into the top five. Those five finalists were given $15,000

by Coca-Cola to produce their commercial. Along with Elon, schools represented in the top five were UCLA, Columbia University, Ithaca College, and the School of Visual Arts in New York City. Three of those schools were graduate programs.

Strauch actually had two films he was producing in the top 15, and found the initial process of working with Coca-Cola to be stressful as they had a lot to do in a short amount of time. He said he felt determined to get a least one film in the top five, and found out over Thanksgiving break last year his film with Wei had made it. Strauch and Wei were flown to Los Angeles to meet with executives at RED Studios Continued on pg. 22

Hollywood to learn more about the process of the competition.

“After that, we really had to hit the ground running,” he said. “We shot our commercial at the end of January, so we had to get the crew situated, find a location to shoot, and secure the actors. Everything moved incredibly quickly during that month and a half.”

As the producer, it was Strauch’s job to scout locations, secure staffing, and work with Coca-Cola to make sure they were making progress. They had a manager who handled communication between Strauch’s team, Regal, and Coke.

Strauch had primarily worked on short films prior to this, and so working on a commercial was a new experience.

“It was different working with a client, especially one of the largest trademarks in the world, who wanted to be both innovative and traditional,” he said. “We had some rules we had to follow to get approved by Coca-Cola. It makes sense – they are giving us the money, so in the end it’s their commercial not ours.”

After scouting theaters in North Carolina, where Elon is located, Strauch and his team made the decision to film in Atlanta, GA. “I thought we would have better luck working with professionals in Atlanta,” he said. “There are more camera companies to rent from and more working actors. We drove down Wednesday morning, filmed Wednesday overnight, and drove back Thursday.”

Strauch found that his background in communications helped throughout the process because he didn’t just focus on film production.

“Having that liberal arts education 22

really helped because I was able to do more than produce; I was able to manage, do public relations, and really focus on the project as a whole and not just my one job within it.”

Strauch was also responsible for overseeing the budget and how the $15,000 was used. They hired a professional director (an Elon alumnus), production designer, gaffing team, composer, and food stylist (“She knew how to make microwavable pretzels look amazing.”).

“My main goal more than anything else as I was planning out who would be on set was, whenever I could bring in a professional, I would provide a student assistant from the school,” he said. “This way they had an opportunity to work with a professional in the industry and shadow them. Nobody was left behind with the professionals doing everything – it was a very hands-on learning experience.”

Strauch is proud that they were able to give so many Elon students a chance to be involved.

“Even though two people technically won the competition, I don’t like to say that because it

was really our whole school,” he said. “We had 45 people from Elon involved in the project.”

Strauch said it was difficult being a full-time student while making the commercial, and he feels grateful to have had the support of his professors.

“My professors understood when I would rush out of class to take a phone call,” he said. “It was nice to have that support from them, and to know they wanted the project to be as good as it could be. It really pushes for what Elon stands for – learning through experience.”

When Strauch first arrived at Elon his freshman year, he was an elementary special education major. After touring the School of Communication during new student orientation, he soon after switched because he thought it would be more fun. He became very involved in the on-campus clubs, including CINELON, an on-campus, studentrun production company; ESTV, Elon Student Television, where he helped produce special projects; and the campus radio station.

producer because I like to talk and work with people,” he said. “I never would have learned that in the classroom.”

He worked on many short films on campus, and produced BFA projects for two seniors, one with a $7,000 budget and another with a $15,000 budget.

Strauch also studied abroad in London, where he interned for a small production company working on script development.

“I read three to four scripts a day, made notes on what I liked and didn’t like, and passed them along to producers,” he said. “It helped me figure out that I enjoy screenwriting.”

Strauch said two things Saint James taught him were time management and learning how to write well.

“Those are two things that Saint James does really well, and I think really helped me in my major,” he said. “I think Saint James helped me with the academic side of college as well as the film side because I can manage people and time better than most because of the schedules you

follow at Saint James.”

Strauch graduated from Elon in May with a Bachelor of Arts in Cinema and Television Arts. He spent the summer working for the Contemporary American Theater Festival at Shepherd University, his third summer working at the festival.

“I started as a marketing intern, and made my way up to event manager,” he said. “At the height of the festival this summer, I was managing 15 events per week for

patrons and guest artists.”

Strauch very recently moved to Los Angeles, where he hopes to find work in the production and development of feature-length films, though he isn’t closing doors on any opportunities that might come up.

“I know that I haven’t completely found what I love doing,” he said. “I have a lot to learn from this industry, and I know I have a lot of room to grow, and I’m excited to see where it takes me.”

A Sermon For Parents' Weekend October 7, 2018

“All scripture is inspired by God and profitable for teaching for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”

(2 Timothy 3.16)

In nomine . . .

Last Saturday, I had the pleasure of attending the wedding of a friend who was remarrying at the age of 60 after suffering a divorce some fifteen years ago.

I say that she suffered a divorce because she is a particularly sweet and kind woman who lived for her children and husband as best she could until he left her. Although she was stunned and wounded, she continued to take close care of her two sons, even though one was now in college, got a job, “downsized,” and built a social life and found new friendships in her large and loving parish.

In the eyes of the world, she was a “loser,” and her story was a sad one: she lost a great deal (her marriage to a successful man, her house in a nice neighborhood), and she was left with real challenges: her older son had some health issues and the younger some learning issues; she had to adjust financially; find a job; and she was socially isolated.

But in the eyes of God, she was blessed, because she was a selfless and loving woman, who had done nothing wrong, and to her great credit, rejected the darkness of bitterness, self-pity, anger, and revenge. With remarkable resilience, she adjusted and built a new life based on what she cared about: her children, her friends, and her faith in God. And as a result, she never ceased to be the same open-hearted, kind, enthusiastic, self-giving person I had always known her to be. She did her best not to become ugly or mean, and she did not stay a victim.

And then beyond any expectation she met a good man who loved her and announced that she was getting married, and I made a point of going to the wedding, because I was just so pleased for her and honored to be invited.

And what was interesting about the wedding was that many of the guests had grown up, as I grew up and the bride grew up, in that private school northwest Washington,

Bethesda-Chevy Chase world we have been hearing so much about in the news recently in relationship to Judge Kavanaugh’s candidacy for the Supreme Court and Dr. Blasey Ford’s stunning accusation against him.

Now, here let me say that Judge Kavanaugh, like so many people these days, is younger than I am, so I did not know him, and the Georgetown Prep/ Stone Ridge world he grew up in did not intersect with the St. Albans/NCS world that I grew up in. The link for me is Landon and Holton Arms where Dr. Ford attended, as I had many friends and neighbors at those schools, and several, because the bride also went to Holton, were at the wedding.

To be honest, the crowd at this wedding was, like the bride and me, “the good kids” and not “the cool kids” growing up, so we did not go to parties like that, and the social scene described in the press became, I gather, even more toxic after we graduated, but I sat between two women at the wedding lunch, one of

| chapel talk | whom knew Dr. Ford and the other Judge Kavanaugh personally, and this made for an animated conversation.

What I will tell you is that it was the universal view of everyone I spoke to that the press’ description of parties and gatherings for drunken, privileged teenagers in their parents’ houses and backyards was entirely accurate.

Now, lest anyone get nervous, let me be quick to say that I am making no political statement here. It would be entirely inappropriate for me to take one side or the other in what has become a highly politicized debate from which nobody has emerged undamaged, most especially the Senate.

But there are some take-aways from this sad tale which we do well to note and to consider as we gather at Saint James School and at this altar for Parents’ Weekend.

First, teenagers and alcohol do not mix well. When teenagers gather to drink, they often, if not usually, get drunk, and when they are drunk, they lose their inhibitions and therefore often act in reckless and aggressive ways, which can cause real harm to themselves and to others.

This is why the legal drinking age is 21.

Second, the consequences of these behaviors can be truly terrible personally, emotionally, and legally, particularly if the aggression is sexual.

Third, parents who host or enable such gatherings are endangering their children and other people’s children, however “safe” they may think these gatherings may be.

And fourth, they are subverting the moral purpose of their child’s school.

This is especially true in the case of a church school, like Georgetown Prep and Saint James School, where we care about the “goodness” and not just the success of our students.

It is in fact the mission of the Jesuits at Georgetown Prep to develop “men for others” and ours at Saint James to develop “leaders for good in the world.”

So let me be clear about this, and I hope that this is not a shock to you: we care more about our students’ goodness than their achievements.

We do not want them to be bullies, and we do not want them to be victims, so we do not want to set them up to be either because some parents feel entitled to break the law.

And yes, we want them to be resilient and resourceful and fulfilled in their lives and careers to come, but never at the expense of somebody else or at the cost of their souls.

We teach this lesson on the athletic field and we enforce it with our honor code: winning isn’t everything. It just isn’t. Some of you won yesterday, and some of you lost, and winning sure feels better than losing, especially when the game is a close one like the football game against Potomac, but in the end who you are and how you played the game is much more important than whether you lost or won. Further, it is this “winning is everything attitude” which is poisoning and corrupting our politics and tearing our country apart.

Certainly, I accept that the world

is a challenging and tempting place these days, and it is not good preparation to overprotect our students, but we do need – all of us - to teach the right lessons, to maintain the right boundaries, and to set the right example as the adults who love them, so we need to be on the same page on this.

The truth is that this school, like every good school, functions in the world as it really is, so we equip our students to be productive and significant in their lives as best we can, giving them the skills that they will need to succeed in college and beyond. This is why we set our standards high in every way that we engage and challenge them: academically, athletically, artistically, and socially.

But as much as we are in the world, we are not of the world, so what we really want for our students is for them to be kind and honest. And yes, we want them to be strong and courageous, but not for their own sakes, rather for the good that they will do for others, for all those people whom they will serve, protect, honor, and love.

So this is our hope for them, our dream, if you will: that they will be faithful, generous, and good – just like my friend at her wedding. Not necessarily “winners” in the eyes of the world, but servants in the cause of God. Amen.

A Chapel Talk October 23, 2018 Jordan Walendom, Sixth Form Saint James Chapel

“In every second of the day, we have the power to make others either add a positive image or a negative image to what they associate with people who come from our families, schools, and countries.”

I stood there, detached, while they threw rocks at me and called me a gorilla.

I was in fourth grade when it happened. It was a Thursday, and the school that I attended with my brother had just dismissed its students to enjoy a much-needed long weekend. The air seemed to have become lighter at the end of that day, no longer weighed down by thoughts of homework assignments and structured schedules. All that was floating through the arid, Tunisian air was the feeling of unrestricted freedom.

At home, I could tell that my older brother felt it, too. Breaks like this were rare, and to start ours off we decided to head to our local convenience store and get a snack.

The snack we were particularly looking for was a “Moulin d’Or,” a sweet, cakey muffin filled with a chocolate hazelnut filling. We headed inside the store and presented all the loose dinar coins we had saved to the friendly Tunisian man behind the counter. He handed us our muffins, and we excitedly started our walk

back home.

Across from the store, a local middle school was letting out for the day. As my brother and I were walking, a group of Tunisian middle schoolers spotted us. “Gira Gira!” they yelled at us from across the street. Despite our lack of proficiency in Arabic, my brother and I knew that term far too well. “Gira Gira” is Tunisian slang for “gorilla” and is used as a derogatory word for black people. Our parents had always instructed us to ignore situations like this. But then the middle-schoolers picked up rocks from the gravel and started throwing them at us. We were far enough away that they weren’t able to reach us, but right then I no longer wanted to ignore them. I wasn’t angry, but I wanted to show that we weren’t going to stand there defenselessly and be targets of their harassment. Just as I began to pick up a rock to start my counter, my brother stopped me and told me that it wasn’t worth it. Back then I didn’t fully understand why, but I listened.

Reflecting back, I know that I represented black people to them.

My brother was right to stop my retaliation because that would only have fulfilled their narrative of people like me being violent, angry “gorillas.” Instead, we decided to challenge and break the narrative.

We maintained our composure which didn’t provide fuel for their stereotypes, and though our idleness may have been perceived as weakness, it was actually the strongest, most effective counterattack.

The truth is, those children were victims of past ideologies fed to them. They were taught by their society not to like us, and this hatred was not by any personal interactions or opinions, but simple prejudice.

Our equanimity in the situation challenged Tunisia’s institutional racism by providing a different picture of black people—one of calmness and rationality.

Similarly, this past September I visited Swarthmore College in Pennsylvania. To get there, I had to take a train from Baltimore to Philadelphia on a cold Thursday morning. I put on a jacket, a pair of Timbs, and a pair of blue jeans,

| chapel talk | hopped in a car with Ms. Masker, and was on the road to Baltimore’s Penn Station. In the outskirts of Baltimore, before entering the business side of the city with its modern, glass office spaces, we saw beaten up brick buildings and cracked, worn-down roads. As we drove by, all the signs of poverty and underfunding were on display.

There were abandoned houses, yet the homeless and unemployed were left begging on the streets hoping to collect enough coins for a decent meal that evening. We also saw teenagers, just like me, on their way to school. It was obvious that the makeup of this neighborhood was predominantly black. Visually, I dressed and looked exactly like those kids. Other than our background and our upbringing, we were, to a stranger, one in the same. On the Forbes list for top 10 most dangerous cities in the U.S., Baltimore falls at number seven, and statistically, according to the U.S. Bureau of Justice Statistics, black males account for 37% of the total prison population despite only representing 12.6% of the population of the United States. For those reasons, there is a strong, unfair negative association with being a young black male from Baltimore, and it is something that, by association, I experienced first-hand.

Once I got onto my train, it was rush-hour and the locomotive was packed. I initially walked along the aisle, keeping an eye out for any open single seat that would allow me to comfortably sit by myself, but my efforts to do so were in vain. After I

began to see that my wish to be alone was too ambitious, I decided to ask a woman who was sitting by herself if I could occupy the relatively empty seat next to her. Her reaction was instant apprehension. She began to slowly and reluctantly move her purse that she had sitting in the seat, before she looked up and said, “I would prefer her” while pointing in the direction behind me. I turned around and saw another women who was white and seemed to be in her early thirties. In that situation, I stepped out of my shoes and analyzed the situation from the perspective of the woman in the seat. The woman behind me appeared to be friendly, approachable, and most importantly, harmless. On the other hand, I was a threat. So much so, that the mere idea of me sitting next to her was of such concern that she would be blatantly rude in order to protect herself from this potential menace.

The lady behind me told her, “I don’t know why you would say that, but I don’t think that either of us would be interested in sitting with you at this point.” Unfortunately, I did know why the lady in the seat said what she did, and it was purely because of how I looked and what she associated with how I looked. We both continued our search for a seat that would hopefully involve less confrontation.

Though this instance of racial profiling was intensely uncomfortable for me, it was significant in that I just happened to be profiled with one part of my character. In reality, I am fortunate that my family is in a comfortable socio-economic position and that

I benefit from the positive profiles in that group. I also benefit from being a student of an esteemed private boarding school that most people would profile as a school that represents kindness and respect.

If I were to have been of different socio-economic status or school, the prejudice of my character could be worse, making it even harder to represent myself without already being misunderstood.

I understand today that in all things I do, I represent more than just me. I represent what others think of my family, my school, my race, and any group with whom I identify. And in these same ways, we all represent more than ourselves.

Sometimes it can be difficult to see it, but in all situations we find ourselves in, the actions we take are bigger than us. They are actions that represent who we represent, and they become actions that add to the narratives people already have of our representative sample.

In every second of the day, we have the power to make others either add a positive image or a negative image to what they associate with people who come from our families, schools, and countries. Through these experiences, I learned that the first step to positively change the preconceived notions someone may have about me is to elevate my standard of character, and let my behavior stand in contrast to, and overpower, their prejudiced expectation. It only takes one act by one person to begin to change the direction of someone else’s expected narrative.

Catching Up With Chris Acker '99 Acker in second year as Assistant Basketball Coach at Boise State University Chris Acker ’99 recently made a visit back to the Saint James campus while on a recruiting trip on the East Coast. Acker has started his second year as an assistant basketball coach at Boise State University, and is in his 11th year coaching in the college ranks.

Acker was exceptional in his first season on the Boise State staff, helping the Broncos to a 23-9 record and a 13-5 record in Mountain West play. The 23 wins tied for the fourth most in program history as the team made it to the National Invitation Tournament (NIT). Acker is a skilled player developer and plays a vital role in defense, recruiting, and skill development for the Broncos.

Acker was also exceptional during his time at Saint James School, leading the Saints basketball team to 20-win season his senior year. Acker, along with Larry Scott ‘99 and John Hartman ‘99, became the first Saint James players nominated for the McDonald’s All-American team.

Originally from Compton, CA, Acker remembers arriving on the Saint James campus for the first time.

“I was overwhelmed. It was the first time I was going to be away from the friends and family that were familiar to me,” he said. “It all sounded good before I was leaving, but when I got off the plane and saw all trees and no buildings I thought, ‘what did I just get myself into?’”

Though he was only here two years,

he has many memories and feels he applies the lessons he learned at Saint James to his everyday life.

“I learned a lot about life and a lot about coexisting and sharing and being a part of something bigger than myself here,” he said. “I learned how to be selfless. The ups and down, trials and tribulations really molded me.”

Ironically, one memory that sticks out to Acker didn’t occur on the basketball court but on the football field.

“I hurt my shoulder playing football and Father Dunnan took me to the hospital, took me to dinner, and stayed with me the entire day,” he said. “He talked me through it. I was really stressed because I thought I wouldn’t be able to play basketball that year. He was there for me and helped me through that process

mentally. I don’t think he realized how much that meant to me.”

After graduating from Saint James, Acker played two years of community college basketball before finishing his playing career at Chaminade University in Hawaii. After a productive two seasons, which included helping the Silver Swords to an upset of Villanova in the 2003 Maui Invitational, Acker went on to a four-year professional career in China, Greece, Portugal, and the United States.

“I’ve hiked the Great Wall, I’ve been to the Acropolis in Greece, and I’ve been to some great soccer games in Lisbon,” he said. “I feel grateful to have had those opportunities.”

Acker first started coaching at Citrus College in Glendora, CA, serving as an assistant coach and the associate head coach during

| chalk talk | his six-year tenure. He helped the Owls win the 2008 California state championship and four Western State Conference championships.

During that time, he was also serving as the Youth Programs Director for the Los Angeles Clippers (NBA) and Los Angeles Sparks (WNBA).

“I was responsible for overseeing a multitude of facilities and creating NBA-sponsored programs in those facilities for kids, training professional athletes, and developing staff to maintain those facilities throughout California,” he said.

Former Saint James teammate Philip Scott is now serving in that role after being recruited by Acker to fill his vacancy.

Acker then coached at West Los Angeles College for two years before moving on to the University of Hawaii. In Acker's two seasons at Hawaii, he helped the Rainbow Warriors to the 2016 Big West title and a win in the NCAA Tournament.

He oversaw the team's defense and was the player development coordinator. His skill development highlights include helping Stefan Jankovic progress into the Big West Player of the Year and earn a freeagent contract with the Miami Heat.

Acker continues to move up the college coaching ranks, now at Boise State, where he lives with his wife and two children. He is looking forward to the upcoming season for the Broncos.

Two Former Saints Receive Preseason Recognition

Two Saint James alumni received NCAA basketball preseason recognition.

Justin Robinson (SJS '15), a senior point guard at Virginia Tech, was named to the watch lists for both the Naismith Trophy and the John R. Wooden Award. Only 50 players in the country are named to each list. He was also named second team preseason All-ACC and is on the watch list for the 2019 Bob Cousy Point Guard of the Year Award.

Grant Golden (SJS '16), a sophomore at the University of Richmond, was named preseason First Team All-Conference in the Atlantic 10 Conference. Golden was named Third-Team All-Conference and All-Rookie after last season.

We look forward to watching Justin and Grant in action this season!

SJS Welcomes New Faces to Coaching Ranks Kevin Breslin, Boys' Varsity Basketball Coach

Kevin Breslin is a Western Maryland native with an extensive background in international basketball. Most recently he served as the head coach for Fastbreak Basketball Club in Singapore, where he coached over 15 teams across all age groups in domestic club competition while also leading teams on trips to Hong Kong, Australia, and China.

Kevin has also coached collegiately at Johns Hopkins University and Washington College, his own alma mater. He was also involved in the development of Global Squad, a unique summer sports camp designed for international student athletes seeking exposure to American competition.

In high school, he excelled at St. Maria Goretti.

He then became the sixth all-time leading scorer at Washington College. We look forward to watching him lead the Saints this season.

Peyton Wallech, Girls' Varsity Volleyball Coach

A 2013 graduate of North Hagerstown High School, Peyton Wallech was a fouryear varsity starter and earned MVAL first team honors and three-time All-County First Team honors. Her team won the 2011 and 2012 3A State Championship and she was the 2012 Volleyball Player of the Year.

Peyton continued her volleyball career at Hagerstown Community College, and had a very successful freshman year, including being named 2013 First Team MD JUCO Conference.

An ACL injury moved her into coaching. Peyton has coached club volleyball and coached for Washington County Recreation Department for three years, serving as both middle school and elementary school division coach. In her first year, the Saints won the IPSL title and we know continued success will follow.

Theresa Ingram-Kuhar, Girls' Varsity Lacrosse Coach

Theresa didn't start playing lacrosse until she was a freshman in high school, but she quickly excelled and went on to play at the University of Maryland. Four final four appearances in her college career, an Academic AllAmerican honor, and a great deal of hard work and dedication led Theresa to being selected to the USA National team, where she competed at the highest level for over six years.

Theresa served as an assistant coach at George Mason and Duke before becoming one of the youngest head coaches in the Ivy League at Brown University (1998-2004). In 2010, she was inducted into the Greater Baltimore US Lacrosse Hall of Fame.

Theresa has also been a camp director on both coasts, clinician nationwide, and a mentor to athletes in her community. She will be a major asset to our program.

Dee Wolford, Assistant Football Coach

Dee Wolford is a native of Pittsburgh, PA where he was a three-sport athlete (football, basketball, and baseball).

He attended Shippensburg University by way of Geneva College on athletic scholarship where he played as defensive back and return specialist. Dee went on to play semi-professional football and was offered contracts to play arena football with several organizations. He played most recently for the Pittsburgh Power of the AFL. Dee co-owns a speed and agility company called Ball Hawks Academy which focuses on improving the overall athletic performance of athletes ranging from youth to the professional level. He has trained numerous athletes who have received athletic scholarships and have played at the professional level.

The Saints benefited from his knowledge this season.

The 2018 Saint James Cross Country team consisted of 27 runners and was led by Head Coach Katie Ellis and Assistant Coaches Ian Brauner, Molly Billings, and Barry Salisbury.

On the boys’ side, this was a rebuilding season, characterized by success from new team members, and new growth from returning members. The girls’ team saw tremendous improvement over the course of the season, placing higher in every meet that they also ran in last year, and contending strongly against local competition in the IPSL race.

Both teams performed well at the IPSL Championship on October 18th. The boys’ team placed third in a tough field of competition, and the girls’ team placed second, just edged out by a very deep Mercersburg team. Darcy Farrell (Fifth Form), Elise Bamforth (Second Form), and Morgan McMahon (Fourth Form) earned All-IPSL Honors by placing 3rd, 4th, and 5th respectively in the Varsity Girls race.

The biggest highlight of the season was the MAC/ ISL Championship in Derwood, MD on the most difficult course the team

saw all season. This year the difficulty of the course was significantly increased by challenging conditions.

Runners were competing in the mud and rain, which slowed everyone down. Regardless, the boys’ team had a top five average of of 23:14 which is the seventh fastest in

school history for this championship. The team placed 7th in the race.

The girls’ team had the opportunity to compete in the Varsity B race for the ISL, and earned their first team victory, placing first out of 17 ISL teams.

Their top five average was 23:00, which makes them

Stand-out performances by the top five girls led to this strong finish: Elise Bamforth won the race, Darcy Farrell placed second, Morgan McMahon placed third, Chaltu Watkins (Third Form) placed 11th, and Pearl Walker (Second Form) placed 16th.

Fifth Former and new runner Kevin Jin led the boys' team for the majority of the season and earned the Most Valuable Runner award at the Varsity Banquet.

He was often closely followed by Fourth Form veteran runner Jackson Pentony, who was named Most Improved Runner for his efforts this season.

Returning Fourth Former Will Zimmermann was also often in the top three for the varsity team, and he received the Coaches’ Award for his strong contributions both during meets and practice this season. Fourth Form veteran runner Mike Lau was also a big contributor for the boys’ team all season, placing third or fourth for the team in every race. Long time runner and Sixth Form leader Jack Walker was a consistent contributor to the top five this season to cap off his successful cross country career at Saint James. New runners Nicky Pank and Willson Moody (in Fifth and Third Forms respectively) rounded out

the top seven for the boys' team and made great progress this season. Notably, Moody was one of only two boys on the team to run a personal best in the challenging conditions of the MAC Championship.

Many new runners were behind the top seven pushing them to improve in every practice and race. These included Rodrigo Tejado (Third Form), Jack Weisgerber (Fourth Form), Bill Li (Fifth Form), and Will Moerschel (Sixth Form).

Returning runners — including Fifth Formers Patrick Nguyen and Evan Fulmer — also pushed themselves and their teammates this season.

Farrell, McMahon, and Watkins were consistently in the top three for the girls’ team and received the Most Valuable Runner award, the Coaches Award, and the Most Improved Runner award respectively at the Varsity Banquet.

Returning Sixth Former Kate Wu generally held the fourth position on the team in the regular season and made great improvements to her running this season. New Second Form runners Bamforth, Walker, and Kayla Handley were not

able to compete until late in the season, but once they did they were tremendous contributors to the team success at the IPSL and ISL races. New Third Form runners Audrey Johnson and Helen Jackson contributed to the top seven and team score this season, and Johnson was one of very few to run a personal best in the final race. New Fourth Former Marley Froe improved dramatically over the course of the season, and returning Fourth Form runner Venus Anani had a breakthrough season dropping over 12 minutes from her 5k personal record of last season.

Returning Fourth Former Laurelle Maubert was not able to compete this season due an injury, but she was a great contributor to the management of the team on race days. Similarly,

new Sixth Form team member Chris Chaney was not able to compete but helped out at races.

Returning Fourth Form runner Connor Port was poised to take the top position on the boys' team this season after a summer of hard work, but was unable to run regularly because of injury.

Improvement is the most important metric for determining the success of a cross country season, and the 2018 season proved to be one of impressive improvement for the team. Over the course of the season, the 11 girls who competed in multiple races dropped a total of 21 minutes and 41 seconds off of their 5K race times. The 14 members of the boys' team dropped total 20 minutes, and 52 seconds in their 5K times.

The 2018 season was a bit of a roller coaster for the Saints, but the 2018 Varsity Field Hockey team was one of the strongest in program history. The team powered through a tough schedule all season long with grit, resilience, and a sense of pride in the team and the School.

After beginning the season with a tough 3-1 loss to perennial powerhouse Foxcroft School, the Saints immediately bounced back with a 7-0 trouncing of Frederick County’s Tuscarora High school.

Captain Rosy Lin (Sixth Form) had a hat trick

and an assist, Olivia Welty (Fifth Form) scored two goals, Olivia Riser (Fifth Form) notched her second goal of the season, and Molly English (Sixth Form) added a goal, while Zoe Esterly (Fifth Form) had an assist.

Goalie Leiny Ruggiero (Fifth Form) had a handful of saves in her first shutout of the season.

This was followed by a tough overtime loss at Bishop O’Connell High

School where Captain Maddie Sappenfield (Sixth Form) had two goals and an assist, Welty had one goal and one assist, and Lin added another goal. Kaitlin Dellaposta (Fifth Form) and Riser each had an assist. After a loss to Sidwell Friends,

Saint James got back on track with a thrilling 1-0 overtime victory against Pennsylvania’s Huntingdon Area High School. Jee Yoon Kim (Sixth Form) kept the Saints in the game in regulation with a defensive save as Ruggiero recorded her second shutout of the season. Reagan Bradley (Fourth Form) scored her first varsity goal about halfway through overtime on a beautiful deflection of a pass from Riser.

Following a heartbreaking loss to rival Mercersburg Academy, Saint James won a rainy-day contest with Middleburg Academy.

Lin recorded two goals and an assist, while Riser added two goals of her own. Esterly recorded her first varsity goal and Sappenfield got in on the

With exceptional midfield play from Eliza Durham (Fifth Form), the Saints brought perhaps their best all-around effort of the season to Bullis, but were handed a 2-1 loss despite a highlight-reel goal as Durham, Sappenfield, and Lin teamed up for a penalty corner goal from Lin. After another loss to Mercersburg and a heartbreaking injury to defensive leader Maggie McFillen (Sixth Form), Saint James wound down the season by outscoring opponents 11-0 during a busy week. Behind a whopping five goals from Welty, the Saints defeated Wakefield School 6-0. Sappenfield added the final goal and Lin had three assists. Riser, Bradley, and Durham each

had an assist and Ruggiero worked with a defense anchored by Kim, Captain Victoria Vando (Sixth Form), and Jenna Root (Fifth Form) to record her third of four shutouts on the season.

Just two days later, Welty

was back at it with four goals (totaling nine in two games) as the Saints rolled past a talented team from Brookewood School. Riser tallied two goals and two assists in the game, and Sappenfield and Lin each added an assist. Newcomer Hav Mercer (Fourth Form) joined fellow fourth formers Katy Kwon and Lidwina Eyombo-Bella and sixth former Michele Yeung as key defenders to help Ruggiero record yet another shutout.

Welty ended the season with a team-high twelve goals plus an assist, and Lin finished her senior campaign with five goals and six assists.

Riser added four goals and six assists, while Sappenfield had three goals and five assists to show for her outstanding play all season. Bradley, English, and Esterly each had a goal and Bradley,

Dellaposta, Durham, and Esterly each had an assist on the season, meaning that all nine of the Saints’ forwards and midfielders recorded at least a point throughout the season.

Ruggiero reached last year’s total of 50 saves for the Saints and was supported with defensive saves from Kim and Vando, as well as strong play all season from the Saints’ defensive unit.

The Saints will lose six starters to graduation, including defensive stalwarts McFillen and Vando, but are still a relatively young team.

Thanks to the growth of the 2018 squad, 2019 promises to be a great season for Saint James Varsity Field Hockey.

Varsity Football Coach John Root MVP: TJ Quelet MIP: Steven Schwartz Coaches’ Award: Carter Bowers

The 2018 Saint James football program had to replace a large group of graduated players who had made a huge impact on the program, and without hesitation new faces stepped in and helped the team to its third winning season in a row with a final record of 7-3.

The Saints opened their season with a 38-0 home game win over new opponent Maryland Freedom. The offense was led by standout receiver Chase Osinga (Sixth Form) who hauled in three touchdown passes from quarterback Jacob Dugas (Fourth Form), who

threw for four touchdowns on the day. The ground game was led by Aiden Ensor (Fourth Form) who totaled 84 yards on only 11 carries. Defensive end Robert Purnell (Sixth Form) continually harassed the Freedom running backs and receivers. Purnell recorded six tackles and two sacks, including a safety. Andre Myers (Sixth Form) had two interceptions, Karl von Einseidel (Fourth Form) had nine tackles, and Lane Gay (Sixth Form) had 12 tackles.

Week two saw the Saints travel to Bishop Ireton to face another new opponent.

The game was played under gloomy skies and a steady downpour, but the Saints made the best of the poor conditions handing

the Cardinals their first loss of the season, 3614. The team ran for 221 yards with the strong running of Isaiah Knight (Fourth Form) and Ensor.

Knight and Lane Gay each tallied a rushing TD while Timmy Awofiranye (Sixth Form) and Purnell hauled in aerials for TDs from Dugas. The Saint James defense recorded eight tackles for a loss and had three fumble recoveries. Kicker Miles Wyndham (Sixth Form) showed his strong leg with three touchbacks on kickoffs, was 4 for 4 on point-after-touchdown kicks and booted two field goals of 44 and 43 yards to conclude the scoring.

The Saints next went on the road to face Washington County foe Smithsburg. Perhaps the rainy, muddy conditions could have been a sign to the visiting Saints that this would be a messy contest both literally and figuratively. Facing an

unfamiliar opponent with an unusual offensive scheme, the Saints defense struggled to contain the small Leopard QB and fell behind at halftime. A rejuvenated Saint James team took the field the second half but couldn’t overcome the first half miscues, falling short with a 21-28 loss.

The Frederick Douglas Mighty Ducks came into town for a week four contest. The Saints took their previous week’s frustrations out on the visitors by way of a 38-6 victory which was stopped early due to injuries on the Douglas side. Saint James was led by a bevy of running backs including Ensor, Gay and Knight.

The real damage though came behind the passing of Dugas who was 14 of 20 for 265 yards and 5 TDs (two to Osinga and three to Myers). Tanner Brandimarte (Fifth Form) led the secondary in tackles and pass break-

| chalk talk | ups from his safety position. Sixth formers Jack Guillard, Jonathan Kamto, TJ Quelet, Gay, and Awofiranye kept Douglas ball carriers in check all day long.

The mid-point of the season saw the Saints host their first MAC opponent in Sidwell Friends School.

Quelet stepped into an unfamiliar role as the go-to running back for the Saints. Quelet rushed 14 times through, over, and around the Quaker defense on his way to 162 yards. The young Sidwell team harassed the Saints all day with strong play, but in the end the Saints had the win, 34-13.

Over Family Weekend, the Saints hosted another MAC opponent, the Potomac School Panthers.

The Saints had their eyes on revenge from last season’s loss. The Saints came ready to play accounting for almost 400 yards of total offense, but the game perhaps will be best remembered

as a lesson on finishing.

With only a few minutes remaining in the contest and the Saints firmly ahead 30-22 things went south for the home team.

With the ball in hand and a short clock the ball came loose, and a Panther defender pounced on the ball. The Panthers managed to punch the ball into the end zone with just three seconds left on the clock, and then converted a two-point try to send the game into overtime. In overtime, Panthers found the end zone and went up 37-30. The Saints responded by scoring quickly. The Saints decided to try to end the contest with a two-point conversion attempt, but when the official blew the two-point try dead the ball lay at the one-foot line.

Twelve inches separated the Saints from victory.

With a short week of practice Saint James hosted new opponent, the Central Virginia Disciples.

The Saints torched the

Disciples 52-8 to push the team’s record to 4-2.

Knight led all rushers with 108 yards while von Einseidel, Myers, William Topham (Sixth Form) and Osinga accounted for 213 yards in receptions.

Flint Hill hosted Saint James for the third MAC contest of the year.

Flint Hill came into the contest undefeated and having averaged 43 points per game. The Saints managed to hold the Huskies explosive team to 38 points but could not put the ball into the end zone. Flint Hill would go on to steam roll its way through the MAC averaging almost 50 points per game.

The Saints held a Sixth Form recognition to honor the 14 graduating football student-athletes before the final home game against Maret.

Saint James dominated the line of scrimmage behind massive offensive lineman Miigwas Assance (Fourth Form), Steven Schwartz (Sixth Form), Carter Bowers (Sixth Form), Ben Couling (Fifth Form), and Tom Brow (Fifth Form). This offensive line averaged 6’3” and 292 pounds.

They pushed the visiting Frogs around as the Saints rushed for nearly 300 yards, including 227 yards and three TDs from Knight. The defense was led by Purnell, Kamto, and Quelet at their linebacker spots and

steady contributions by Daniel Peacher (Third Form), Idriss Traore (Sixth Form), Awofiranye, Brandimarte and more Saint defenders. In the end the Saints came away with a 22-19 victory.

The final game of the season was played at Williamsport. Though close neighbors on the map, the Saints and Wildcats had never played football against each other.

The conditions could best be described with three words: cold, wet, and muddy. One the first play from scrimmage Knight raced untouched 80 yards for the TD. Later in the game, Knight scored on a 90-year run. Dugas ran for a score after a bobbled snap and threw a TD to von Einseidel late in the game. The visiting Saints dominated the game offensively, defensively, and on special teams.

The Saints ended the season with a 7-3 record.

The team will lose 14 sixth formers in Rob Purnell, Timmy Awofiranye, Steven Schwartz, Jack Guillard, Jared Zhang, Idriss Traore, TJ Quelet, Chase Osinga, Jonathan Kamto, Andre Myers, John Okoro, Carter Bowers, Lane Gay, and Miles Wyndham. These young men have helped not only produce a successful season, but also to transform the entire football program into a force for opposing teams to reckon with.

Excessive heat.

Multitudes of rain.

Gusting winds. The 2018 Golf team felt the impact of each over eight weeks of scheduled competitions. After playing a well-received 18-hole “scrimmage” event at the site of the MAC Tournament during Welcome Week in late August, the Saints played one 9-hole match against Potomac the first week of classes at Beaver Creek.

Falling to the Panthers, the Saints looked to get into the win column in early September. “Mother Nature,” however, had

other plans as the Saints suffered four consecutive cancellations as a result of weather.

Rain took one more match off the Saints’ schedule in late September.

Beyond the loss of matches, weather prevented the Saints’ from getting access to courses when local venues attempted to make-up lost revenue by packing the tee sheets or didn’t want high

school golfers out on the course in “iffy,” soaked conditions where damage might be done to the course. As a result, it’s not too much of a stretch to say that the Saints’ biggest weakness this year was lack of consistency. For example, rather than have “routine” scores – i.e., relatively similar scores in relation to par in each match – the guys flipflopped between playing well and poorly.

That being said, we played our best in midSeptember when the work and routines from June, July, and August still remained fresh. Victories against Saint Andrew’s School and Clear Spring High School highlighted the Saints’ abilities. In the Clear Spring match at a water-logged Whitetail Golf Resort, the team

shot a season-best team score of 172. Fifth Former Will Hertel took medalist honors with a 4-over par score of 40, while Tripp Bagarus (Fifth Form), John Gilbert Storey (Fourth Form), and Frankie Corsi (Fourth Form) all came in under 46 strokes each. Thanks to Mr. Rich Hogan’s generous offer to have the guys out for practice, taking the top 6 players to the course prior to the Clear Spring match helped with sight lines, putting, and held off the distractions related to practice here on campus.

When the calendar changed to October, the Saints finally got consecutive matches under our belts. Unfortunately, each of these matches resulted in annoyingly close, frustrating losses.

| chalk talk | Despite John Gilbert Storey’s 39 (4-over par) against GDS and St. Anselm’s Abbey School at Bretton Woods, any momentum carried from the earlier victories disappeared. That we didn’t play better in October might be blamed on September’s weather and lack of matches, but, more likely resulted from the inability to practice off-site because of poor course conditions.

Fortunately, with a turn in weather after Fall Long Weekend, the top 6 got out to Maryland National to use that course’s “short game” area prior to the MAC and IPSL tournaments. This one practice – where the guys could putt on fast greens, chip and pitch to a proper green, and use a different driving range – made a significant difference in our final two matches. What would have happened at either of the year-end events had we not gone to Maryland National for some muchneeded work is anybody’s guess. Despite gusty winds and low temperatures, there is no doubt in my mind that the “rebound” in play by the Saints at the MAC Tournament – where we finished 5th – and the IPSL Tournament – where we narrowly lost the title to Mercersburg Academy – can be correlated to our practice session in Myersville.

Further, I suspect that outstanding individual play of Will Hertel, who earned All-MAC honors (tied 9th with an 83) and All-IPSL honors (co-medalist with a 42) – becoming the first Saint James golfer to earn this double distinction since 2013 – and Benson Riser (Third Form), who earned All-IPSL honors (4th place with a 44), would not have happened without the trip to Maryland National.

Two other golfers played in the #6 slot this season. Third Former Luke Barnes made contributions in two matches to start the season. Sixth Former Zach Crampton’s work ethic and athleticism

brought him into the starting line-up by midSeptember against Clear Spring. From this point, Zach joined the others in the line-up regularly.

The top five golfers all return next year, and Saint James Golf should find itself headed in the right direction and to higher

finishes in the MAC and IPSL in 2019 should the guys embrace the need to play and practice regularly next summer and focus on process before score. Indeed, I remain optimistic about the 2019 season!

Varsity Girls' Soccer Coach Laurie Douglass MVP: Lilly Noel MIP: Zoe Schlotterbeck Coaches’ Award: Tessa Douglass

In anticipation of the challenges and opportunities presented by the 2018 fall season of girls soccer, the team’s guiding mantra came from a commencement speech by David Foster Wallace entitled “This is Water.” “This is Soccer” served as a reminder of the power that comes from intentionally choosing one’s reaction in every situation. In a season where nearly all of our key players were plagued by injury, this empowering and unifying idea, applicable both on and off the field, allowed the team to persevere in the

face of many challenges.

Perhaps the quality I most respect about this group of athletes, is how at nearly every turn, when they could have crumbled, they always kept fighting.

An extremely talented core of returning players welcomed a small incoming class of new students, Veronica Noel (Second Form), Sabina Noel (Second Form), Emily Vando (Third

Form), Chloe HardyMoody (Third Form), Kali Mahoney (Third Form) and Amelia Shaw (Fourth Form) to the ranks. The new players quickly assimilated to the rigors of a varsity sport and made their mark upon the program in a variety of impactful and positive ways.

The season started off with a bang and a streak of five victories. Goalkeeper, Skylar Treadwell (Fifth Form) recorded two shutouts before her season ended early due to a groin injury. Center midfielder, Alli Jacobson (Fourth Form) also fell victim to an ankle injury that sidelined her for the bulk of the season. The streak included three comefrom-behind victories, a satisfying 2-0 victory over cross-town rival and IPSL foe, Goretti, and a

program defining win in which the Saints were able to rewrite the script of domination by stunning the top-ranked team in the state of West Virginia, Hedgesville High School.

Erin Miller (Sixth Form) had a heroic effort in goal tallying 19 saves and the team’s Most Valuable Player, and Captain, Lilly Noel (Sixth Form), put on a shooting clinic, recording a hat trick in the 3-2 victory. Noel would finish the season with a team leading 13 goals and 4 assists.

From there, the season cycled through a period of tough losses, with a sprinkling of decisive wins and ended with a record of 8-8. The defense was anchored

by Samantha Brown (Fifth Form), Captain Brooke Adams (Sixth Form), Abby Barnes

| chalk talk | (Fifth Form), and Sabina Noel. Zoe Schlotterbeck (Third Form), Lauren Aguila (Fourth Form) and Kali Mahoney (Third Form) rotated through as necessity dictated. The position requires players to work in tandem and the coordinated effort of these players thwarted the attacking effort of opposing teams more often than not. Thanks to her off-season effort on ball skills and fitness, combined with her ability to actively engage with and apply every coaching point, Schlotterbeck earned this season’s Most Improved Award.

Arguably the most physically demanding position, midfielders play an important role on both the defensive and offensive sides of the field. Aguila and Schlotterbeck were joined in the midfield by Captain and Coaches’ Award winner, Tessa Douglass (Sixth Form) and Maya Drabcyzk (Fifth Form).

Many players rotated through this position and the experience gained from playing multiple roles increased both their soccer IQ and their ability to be impactful both this season and in the future.

Douglass has been a fixture in the center of the field since her second form year. The leadership and intangible effects of her presence are significant.

She finished the season with 10 goals and 4 assists.

Christa Bartlett (Sixth Form) joined Lilly Noel in the forward position and the two were a dangerous scoring combination.

Bartlett led the team with 6 assists. Also rotating through were Drabcyzk, Shaw, Hardy-Moody, Jacobson, and Angie Antoine (Fifth Form). In general, the team’s goal celebrations are pretty special. Players sprint from all over the field to celebrate the collective effort that went into making the goal happen. It is the external expression

of the camaraderie and the unselfishness which is the team’s secret weapon, and by far, the most special one of the year was when Angie scored off a cross

by Amelia Shaw against Berkeley Springs.

Through sheer determination, perseverance, and will, the team earned second place in the IPSL Conference and the right to play in

the Championship game against Mercersburg.

Despite ultimately falling to Mercersburg 2-1, the hard fought battle epitomized all the traits that define Saints soccer.

Thank you to all the players who poured their hearts and souls into the team and to the faculty and parents for their support this season.

The 2018 Varsity Boys’ Soccer season began with the addition of two new coaches, Matt Snyder and Chris Plumadore.

Both Coach Snyder and Coach Plumadore came to the team with more than 10 years of coaching experience and a passion for coaching the game. As always with change came an adjustment period for all involved. The coaches had to learn about the players’ strengths, weaknesses, tendencies, and knowledge of the game and the players had to adjust to the new coaches’ philosophies, methodology, and

coaching styles. As the season began, the players as well as Coach Ben Heebner and Coaches Snyder and Plumadore went into Welcome Week full steam ahead with physically and mentally demanding three-a-day practices.

Some players rose to the challenge and some struggled. Eventually some tough decisions were made and the final varsity roster was set. With some late arrivals and a look to the future, the final roster

ended with 23 players.

As the first game of the season at Bishop Walsh approached, there was a definite sense of excitement and uncertainty for the coaches and players. Everyone was excited to see how the team would perform as the boys were learning and advancing with every practice. On the other side of the coin, several players were put in positions they did not typically play in the past.

The game resulted in a 1-0 loss with the Saints controlling the game but not finding the back of the net. This proved to be an issue for the next several games.

The Saints next won their next game against St. John’s Catholic Prep (2-1) with Xzavier Long (Fourth Form) and Spencer McNamee (Sixth Form) each tallying a goal.

They then tied Fannet Metal (3-3) in a double overtime game with Austin Grandstaff (Fifth Form) scoring two goals

and Bryce Kilmer (Third Form) adding one. Long and Gerry Tejado (Fifth Form) added an assist each and Owen Horrigan (Fifth Form) had seven saves in goal.

The following games were a loss to Martinsburg (1-3) and a tie against Spring Mills (2-2). In each of those games, the Saints controlled possession but failed to seize on several opportunities to score.

Shea Pena (Sixth Form) and Jakin Jeong (Sixth Form) each scored for Saint James in the draw with Spring Mills. The Saints completed a solid game against Hedgesville with a 2-0 win. The two goals both came on penalty kicks – one each by Kilmer and Grandstaff. The team then struggled in losses to Sidwell Friends, Clear Spring, Flint Hill, and St. Andrews.

In the game against Smithsburg, the Saints found their ability to face adversity when they overcame a deficit and

| chalk talk | finished the game with two goals in the final 10 minutes of regulation to force a 2-2 tie. Jeong and Tejado had goals for the Saints. The team followed with losses to Georgetown Day School and Maret, and then bounced back with huge wins of 7-2 against Cumberland Valley Christian School and 7-0 against Berkeley Springs.

In the game against Cumberland Valley, seven different Saints combined to create goals.

Jordan Walendom (Sixth Form) scored a hat trick and added two assists.

Grandstaff and Tejado each had a goal and an assist, while Kilmer and Jeong each scored a goal, Long had two assists, Tom Hoang (Fifth Form) added an assist, and Horrigan had four saves. In the win against Berkeley Springs, Jeong had two goals and an assist, Long had a goal and two assists, and Horrigan and Martynas Sabaliauskas (Fifth Form) combined for 10 saves to earn a shutout. Kilmer, Grandstaff, and Benny

Buah (Sixth Form) each had a goal and an assist, while Zach Zanetti (Third Form) scored a goal and Hoang added an assist.

The Saints lost their last three games against St. Maria Goretti, Potomac School, and Mercersburg Academy.

Looking back at the season the team found success and disappointment in different ways, in moments of both victory and defeat, including a frustrating loss to Goretti and the big win against Cumberland Valley. Other moments of success involved a bigger concept that will reap huge dividends in the future. The team was showing tremendous signs of improvement in many close games, only to collapse after a simple mistake was made. The team acknowledged a history of losing that had created an expectation of losing. With this understanding, the players began the process of

changing that mentality and building a bright future for the team.

Team captains Jordan Walendom, Jakin Jeong, and Austin Grandstaff set the example for the team and led from the beginning both on and off the field. Spencer McNamee, Thomas Bacon (Fifth Form), Nash Pena (Fourth Form), and Caleb Norris (Fifth Form) established themselves as dominant players on defense. Gerry Tejado was a dynamic force in the midfield. Shea Pena and Nirmal Singletary (Sixth Form) suffered injuries during the season but contributed on the field with their energy and experience when they were able. Owen Horrigan played a solid season in the goal as he stepped up to fill the vacancy. Newcomers Xzavier Long and Bryce Kilmer brought skill, experience, and creativity to the team. Griffin Almany (Fifth Form) and Tom Hoang were solid

players coming off the bench and filled in on both offense and defense, and Benny Buah was a solid contributor up front.

Tank Yanou (Fifth Form) subbed into the midfield when needed. Other new additions such as Zachary Zanetti, Berke Sertcan (Fifth Form), Felipe Avellaneda (Third Form), and Martynas Sabaliauskas showed real promise for the future. Sixth formers Ang Ngo and Dylan Weibel filled in on the field as well. Every player on the roster regardless of his playing time stepped up in every practice and pushed each other to become better players.

In the end the team finished with four wins, 11 losses, and three ties.

These numbers don’t tell the whole story about the successes the team and individual players achieved. We look forward to the future of Boys’ Varsity Soccer at Saint James.

Varsity Volleyball Coach Peyton Wallech MVP: Trinity Schlotterbeck MIP: Catherine Charlton Coaches’ Award: Caroline Bowers

The 2018-2019 Varsity Volleyball team started with former assistant coach, Peyton Wallech, stepping up to be the team’s newest head coach, with a focus on game knowledge and coaching of all volleyball positions, specifically hitting.

Coach Katherine Proctor remained as the team’s assistant coach specializing in team management and statistics. Coach Wallech and Coach Proctor took on the challenge of merging six returning players and four new varsity players (two of those being new to the sport) with only one week

until the team played its first game.

The team encountered many obstacles, most of them regarding their lineup against public schools. Even with the amount of diversity the team experienced, they ended their season with a successful 11-7 record.

Some of the highlights from the season include: • Returning from a 5-17 point gap to win the three-game set against Saint John’s Catholic

Prep; Battling for a win in the five-game set against rival St. Maria Goretti; • Defeating McConnellsburg in three games, avenging a tough loss to them in the Spartan Annual Tournament; • Battling for point-forpoint in a three-game win against Maryland School for the Deaf; • Second chance win against Mercersburg during regular season; • Two-game win against Mercersburg to advance to IPSL Championship; • Four-game win against Goretti to win the IPSL Championship for the first time in school history; and • Our never-ending team bonding over the course of the season.

Each member of the Varsity Volleyball program played a key part in this year’s season.

The raw athletic abilities of Gabby GranthamMedley (Second Form) were always present on the court. Starting off the season timid, Gabby hit a turning point where she dominated the court.

Her first season as a Saint was very successful as she finished second in kills for the team with a 187 total kills. Gabby also led the team in digs with a high of 137 digs.

Kayla Handley (Second Form) was also new to the Saints, and her natural height helped assist the front row in stopping the ball. Kayla contributed 16 single blocks for the Saints. Her attacking skills grew greatly over the season and her aggressive front row abilities were unveiled. Kayla totaled 26 kills for the Saints.

Catherine Charlton (Third Form) returned to the varsity team specializing in defense.

court. Catherine’s drive to get better showed in the last few matches of the season. She showed up to the IPSL Championship Tournament with a fire to win! Catherine ended the season with 11 aces and 22 digs for the Saints.

Caroline Bowers (Fourth Form) returned for her third starting season with the Saints.

As the only setter on the team, Caroline had a ton of pressure on her shoulders. She showed up every day ready to play and be the best she could be. Her leadership on and off the court was received well by all members of the team. Caroline ended her season with 20 kills, 27 aces, 51 digs, and a whopping 542 assists.

Nelly Xie (Fifth Form) was new to the varsity team this season, having played in the past on the JV team.

Her quickness in the back row was important to our team’s success. Nelly came to practice each day ready to take on what the coaches had planned. She grew her passing skills and provided constant support

for her team throughout the season.

Michaela Siegel (Fifth Form) was this season’s defensive punch. Whether she was in the libero jersey or subbing in for one of the middle hitters, Michaela always showed up. Her technical passing skills were hard to get by.

Michaela was not only a key passer, but a key server for the Saints. Her game against Saint John’s single handedly turned the match around and set the tone for the remainder of our season. Michaela totaled 121 digs for the Saints.

Morgan Moseley (Fifth Form) returned to the varsity team as a starting middle hitter.

Morgan led the team in blocks ending the season with 60. She also played a huge part in establishing front row attacks and gained the Saints 76 kills throughout the season. Morgan took on serving and playing back row this year and improved greatly. She showed up to every

practice and game with a drive to dominate her position.

Grace Bowers (Sixth Form) joined the Saints volleyball team as a complete newcomer. She came to the team knowing nothing of volleyball except for the few times she had played around with her sister Caroline at their home. Grace was a raw athlete and eager to learn anything and everything there was to learn about volleyball in just three short months.

Grace always tried new things and showed others the importance and fun of going outside comfort zones. She was placed into the game during critical times and always gave the atmosphere a new life.

Alessia Regazzoni (Sixth Form) returned for her fourth and final season with the Saints volleyball team. Throughout her career with the Saints, she encountered many changes to her position. She began

as a middle hitter, then transitioned to outside hitter, and then completed in her last season as a floating outside/rightside hitter. Her versatility in all positions played a key factor in this year’s success. As co-captain, Alessia always controlled the tone of the game. She ended the season with 14 blocks, 31 aces, 71 kills, and an outstanding 112 digs.

Trinity Schlotterbeck (Sixth Form) also returned for her fifth and final season as a starter. Trinity was the glue to this year’s team. When she was not hitting, she was passing; she was always in the game.

Trinity’s intense swing kept the other teams on their toes. Her competitive nature never let a ball touch the floor. She ended her season leading the team in kills with 192, and she also had 45 aces, and 135 digs.

23rd Annual "Swing for Scholarships" Golf Classic

For the 23rd consecutive year, the Saint James community came together for a round of golf in support of the Saint James School scholarhip fund. This year's Swing for Scholarships Golf Classic was held on Friday, September 21 at the scenic Musket Ridge Golf Club in Myersville, MD. The event was hosted by the Alumni Council and brings together Saint James parents, alumni, parents of alumni, and friends for a fun day of golf at a picturesque course.

"We thank all of the players and sponsors of the Swing for Scholarships Golf Classic. The overcast day provided ideal conditions for a fun day of golf, all while supporting a great cause," said Greg Wilson, Assistant Director of Development & Alumni Relations.

The rain held off as golfers made their way through the 18hole course, and after they enjoyed appetizers, a silent auction, and the announcement of prize winners. We are grateful to each player and sponsor for their generous support of this event.

Saint James Alumni at the Orioles Game On August 24, members of the Saint James community met at Camden Yards in Baltimore to watch the Orioles take on the New York Yankees. We had wonderful seats along the first-base line and had a fun night at the ballpark, capped off with fireworks and a musical performance. Thank you to all who joined us!

Former Saint James soccer players were invited to campus on September 29 for our inaugural Soccer Alumni Day. Alumni had the opportunity to cheer on the Saints JV Boys, Varsity Boys, and Varsity Girls soccer teams, who were all in action. Saint James Seeks 2019 Award Nominations During Alumni Weekend, the Alumni Council hosts a dinner and awards ceremony in honor of SJS alumni.

Three awards may be presented: the Alumni Award, the Exceptional Service Award, and the Kerfoot Society for Distinguished Faculty—all sponsored by the Alumni Council. We invite alumni to nominate deserving candidates. Below is information about each award.

Alumni Award

Each year, the Saint James School Alumni Council honors alumni who have distinguished themselves with outstanding service to the School and to society. Alumni of the School may nominate candidates for this award.

Nomination and selection criteria include: • Active service to the School. For example, someone who served, or serves as a Class Agent, Trustee, or Alumni Council Member • Or, active leadership with the School. For example, someone who has helped plan an Alumni Weekend or other alumni events; or, someone who has helped lead fundraising efforts (i.e., for the School's Annual Fund, Endowment, or Capital Campaign)

Exceptional Service Award

The Exceptional Service Award honors individuals who have provided exceptional service to the School and its alumni. Nominees do not need to be alumni or faculty of the School. The award is presented at the discretion of the Alumni Council. Nominations are considered on an annual basis. Both current and previous faculty and staff members are eligible for this award. Alumni and friends of the School may nominate candidates for this award.

Kerfoot Society for Distinguished Faculty

Established to recognize faculty members who distinguished themselves above and beyond the call of duty, the Kerfoot Society for Distinguished Faculty was originally suggested by Jeremy H. Biggs '54 when he served as President and Chairman of the Board of Trustees. He expressed that "a good part of the soul of the School is, and always has been, the wonderful and longserving faculty who have been important to its history and to the lives of its students."

Mastering the Sports World Julian Smith '06 Pursues International Master in Sport with FIFA Master Program Julian Smith ’06 discovered a unique opportunity to merge his career and his passion for soccer. Smith is one of 28 students who was accepted into the 19th edition of the FIFA Master, and he began his journey in the year-long program in September. Organized by the International Centre for Sport Studies (CIES), the FIFA Master in Management, Law, and Humanities of Sport promotes management education within the sports world.

Participants study sport at three partner universities: De Montfort University in Leicester, United Kingdom; SDA Bocconi School of Management in Milan, Italy; and the Université de Neuchâtel in Switzerland. The course has three modules that focus on various and interrelated aspects of sport, including humanities, management, and law. Once students complete the program, they receive a joint-diploma delivered by the three universities.

“I hadn’t considered working in sports, but over time that’s where my passion was,” said Smith. “I came across the FIFA Master program and that seemed like a great opportunity.

So far, it’s been amazing.”

Smith received his Bachelor of Business Administration in International Business from The George Washington University in 2010. A dual citizen of the United States and Portugal, Smith knew he wanted to work internationally and finance seemed the best career option. After receiving his degree, he started working for a bank in Portugal. Due to the unstable economic environment in the country, Smith packed up without a job lined up and moved to New York City in 2013. He worked briefly in real estate before taking a position at Moody’s Corporation.

“I worked my way up at Moody’s through dedication and hard work through a variety of roles over five years before this opportunity

presented itself with FIFA Master,” he said.

Smith has spent the first several months of the program studying the humanities portion of the program in England, getting to know his classmates, and visiting sporting sites to meet with top executives from high-level organizations. The dynamic international environment also makes the program unique. The 28 students in Smith’s class represent 21 nationalities from all continents except Antarctica with seven students holding dual citizenship.

“The group is diverse and we also represent a variety of industries,” Smith said. “Conversation is always interesting whether we’re in class or out to dinner. We each have different strengths and weaknesses, so it’s an incredible environment.”

Smith said he is looking forward to the business/finance module in Italy to see how his experience translates to the world of sports. He hopes to share his knowledge and help his fellow students navigate that course material in the same way others are helping him.

Smith’s love for soccer began in 2003 while a student at Saint James.

He started playing more seriously and his coach encouraged him to watch European soccer.

“I wanted to support a team from Portugal, and there was a good team from the Champion’s League called FC Porto that won the European Cup in 2004,” he said. “That solidified my passion for the game.”

Smith ended up at Saint James after a childhood spent in various parts of the world, including Croatia, Portugal, and Italy before his family settled in Washington, DC. He wanted to stay in one place and the idea of a boarding school appealed to him.

“It felt like Saint James was a great place for me to mature and grow,” he said. “I visited several other schools but really felt a connection at Saint James.”

In addition to playing soccer, Smith played basketball, served as a tour guide and chapel reader, The group met with Tommie Smith (pictured in back), and was a prefect, a role Olympian from 1968 Mexico City Summer Games. he took seriously knowing

he represented the students to the faculty as well as the faculty to the students.

“Saint James really helped to turn me into the successful, moral person I feel I am,” he said. “The School helped mold me and I feel grateful for that.”

Smith will begin the next part of the FIFA Master program in Milan in January before heading to Switzerland in March. The program will be complete in July, at which point Smith plans to explore career options.

“Part of the reason to do this course is to see what’s available.

Being part of FIFA Master opens you up to a world that is not always easily accessible,” he said. “By being part of this community, I’m hoping to see where my experience fits in the sports world. I’ve always been ambitious and set the bar high, and I look forward to what’s next.”

James Douglas and his wife Abigail recently welcomed their second child, daughter Charlotte Elizabeth on July 5, 2018, joining twoyear old big brother Oliver James. In August 2018, he was appointed Director of Music at St. Margaret's Episcopal Church and Day School, Annapolis, MD. One of the largest parishes in the Episcopal Diocese of Maryland, he serves as parish organist and oversees a vibrant and growing music program consisting of two adult choirs, two youth choirs, a contemporary band, and a string ensemble.

Tyler Grochot wrapped up a fantastic freshman season at quarterback for the St. Lawrence University Saints.

He set single game records for passing and all-purpose yards against Norwich, was named the Liberty League Offensive Player of the Week (Nov. 5), and was twice named the Liberty League Rookie of the Week (Sept. 10 and 24).

Class Notes In Memoriam Paul H. Knetsche '59 passed away on April 12, 2018 in South Carolina.

He was a long-time donor to the School, and supported both the Annual Fund and the ’59-’60 House project. Paul is survived by two sons, Chris and Roddy, and three grandchildren.

Carole Warfield Michael, wife of Charles "Archie" Michael '60, passed away on September 12, 2018 in Lititz, PA. Carole is survived by her husband, her sons, Charles “Mike” (partner Nidhi Dobosh), Timothy (spouse Tori), and Todd (spouse Megan), her brother Thomas Neff (spouse Cheryl), and six beloved grandchildren.

William G. Howze '64 passed away on October 4, 2018 in Texas.

Bill served in the Army and Army National Guard for more than 20 years. He is survived by his sons, William Logan and Evan Gray.

Roland Funk, father of Barbara Funk Dolson '84, passed away on August 5, 2018 in Hagerstown, MD. He is survived by Barbara and her husband Richard R. Dolson, grandchildren Nancy and Richard Dolson, long-time companion Sandra L. Ridenour, and four brothers.

Phyllis Townsend, mother of Juliette Townsend Braman '95, passed away on November 15, 2018.

Stockton Newbold Smith Former Saint James Parent and Trustee

Stockton "Stocky" Smith passed away in his Villanova, PA home surrounded by his family on August 19, 2018, at the age of 64.

Stocky had two sons graduate from Saint James: Alexander '06 and William '10. Since that time, he has been a generous supporter of the School and served on the SJS Board of Trustees.

A graduate of Eaglebrook School in Deerfield, MA; The Hill School in Pottstown, PA; and the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, VA with a degree in aeronautical engineering, Stocky began his career as an aviator in the United States Navy.

Ultimately rising to the rank of Lieutenant Commander, he attended the prestigious Navy Fighter Weapons School (popularly known as TOPGUN) in San Diego, CA, served aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Nimitz, and piloted the Douglas A-4 Skyhawk and the Grumman F-14 Tomcat.

He closed out his military service with a stint in the United States Naval Reserve, concurrently with civilian duties as First Officer aboard the McDonnell Douglas MD-80, for American Airlines.

Mr. Smith concluded his flying career as the CEO of Atlantic

Aviation, a private flight services firm in Delaware founded by his grandfather, Henry B. duPont.

A lifelong avid yachtsman, the Pennsylvania native skippered his 44-foot sloop Weather Gauge to victory in numerous East Coast races - primarily centered around his family’s summer haven of Mount Desert Island, ME - and, in his youth, accompanied his late father E. Newbold Smith on the latter’s yacht Reindeer to the far reaches of the Arctic, setting a world record for northernmost journey by private sailboat.

Stocky is survived by his wife Priscilla H. Smith; elder sister Eleuthera Grassi; younger brother Henry B. Smith; sons Michael, Alexander '06, and William '10; his sister-in-law Andrea D. Smith (widow of his late brother Lewis duPont Smith); his stepchildren Philippa K. Eindhoven and P. Augustus Klipstein; and numerous nephews and nieces.
