“It is easy to get typecast and play similar roles. I always try to portray roles that I have never portrayed before. I want roles that will make me grow and bring another side of me because we have so many layers as human beings. As I grow older and becoming mature, I am willing to explore. But I still want to play roles that challenge emotionally and further tell more stories about mental illness and gender-based violence.”

Warrenton Police Now Investigating Culpable Homicide as 4 Die in Crash “It is believed the taxi was transporting mine workers” The Warrenton police are investigating a case of culpable homicide following an accident that claimed the lives of four men, when the taxi in which they were travelling plunged into a dry water canal along the N12 on Sunday.

The four men succumbed to their injuries and were declared dead on the scene, while another eight people, including the driver, were rushed to various hospitals for medical treatment.

The accident happened just after the N12 main bridge on the road to Christiana.

The injured were attended to by ER24 and provincial emergency medical services (EMS) personnel.

Police spokesperson Captain

Olebogeng Tawana said the accident happened at approximately 21.45pm.

“It is alleged that the driver hit a stray cow, which was roaming on the N12, and, as a result, lost control over the taxi and plunged into the dry canal,” said Tawana.

It is believed that the taxi was transporting mine workers.

Albert Hensberg from ER24 said they found the passengers outside the vehicle upon arrival at the scene.

Rapists in Kimberley and Postmasburg Arrested by SAPS after Public Info A 23-YEAR-old suspect who allegedly kidnapped and raped an 18-year-old woman was arrested in Kimberley on Tuesday after he tried to evade the police.

“The suspect allegedly assaulted and kidnapped four women aged between the ages of 26 and 35 years old on separate occasions in Postmasburg.”

Tawana said the suspect was expected to appear in the Postmasburg Magistrate’s Court on May 31.

The acting deputy provincial commissioner for crime detection, Brigadier Nicky Mills, praised the tracking team for bringing the wanted suspects to book.

We Visited These Schools In 2013. We Went Back Last Month. Here’s What We Found challenge. The classrooms typically have between 80 and 100 learners.

Toilets are disgusting and dilapidated. Sometimes young children relieve themselves in open fields because the pit latrine toilets are too dangerous for them. Both mud and prefabricated classrooms are dilapidated.

There is often a shortage of teachers, school cleaners and textbooks. Vandalism has worsened the situation.

In 2013, a delegation of eminent activists, academics, authors and political analysts including Archbishop Thabo Makgoba and author Zakes Mda joined Equal Education on a visit to several schools in the Eastern Cape. What they found was horrifying. Nearly ten years later, GroundUp went back to four of the schools. Here’s what we found.

Lwazi Mantantana was in Grade 12 when Anglican Archbishop Thabo Makgoba visited Nyangilizwe Senior Secondary School in Mthatha in 2013. The archbishop was part of a delegation led by Equal Education to highlight poor conditions in Eastern Cape schools. Today Mantantana is a teacher at the same school - and conditions if anything are even worse.

In 2013, the delegation found 23 teachers teaching 730 learners.

Each matric class had 60 learners, according to principal Vuyani Zembe, and there was a shortage of textbooks. GroundUp accompanied the delegation, and we saw unfinished muddy classrooms, with no windows or doors, and eight toilets in an open field of grass. Mantantana says despite these challenges they are doing their best to improve their matric results.

“From Monday to Sunday we have extra classes. In 2019 our matric pass rate was 59% then dropped to 53% in 2020. Last year it increased to 76%,” he said.

Grade 9 learner Zizipho Macobana says there are 86 learners in her classroom. “I can’t concentrate because there is too much noise.”

Learner Lathitha Majubana says, “Our toilets are filthy and we share them with boys. When we go to the toilet we escort one another. If you want to relieve yourself you have to ask another girl to hold the door for you because it is broken.”

Mothlabane said there was a lack of political will to deliver appropriate school infrastructure and a lack of capacity in the Eastern Cape Department of Education to monitor delivery.

OUTA Applauds Reduction in General Fuel Levy The Organisation Undoing Tax Abuse (Outa) has welcomed the latest fuel price reprieve by government, saying poor people are bearing the brunt of rocketing prices.

The Mineral Resources and Energy Minister Gwede Mantashe and Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana announced jointly that they will approach the National Assembly for an extension of the reduction in the general fuel levy until the 2nd August 2022.

The move softened the petrol price increase to a still substantial hike of between R2.33 and R2.43 a litre.

Diesel goes up by as much

as R1.10 cents a litre.

Wholesale paraffin will increase

by R1.56 cents a litre.

Outa’s executive director of accountability, Stefanie Fick says the petrol price has become a big issue in South Africa.

“The impact it has on the less fortunate is even worse.

Because we all know, the minute the petrol price goes up, transport costs go up. If transport costs go up, what we pay for food and all the essential stuff, it all goes up.”

“Our economy is not what it is supposed to be, we have an unemployment rate that is skyrocketing. We are struggling with the oil prices going up, [fuel price reprieve] it is good news,” explains Fick.

Hera Telescope Shows Benefits Of Radio Astronomy In SA South Africa’s Hydrogen Epoch of Reionisation Array (HERA) telescope has attracted over R74 million direct financial investment since 2013. This is according to the South African Radio Astronomy Observatory (SARAO), which has undertaken a local impact study of SA’s hosting of HERA. The HERA telescope is an array of 350 antennas situated next to the MeerKAT radio telescope on the site that hosts the Square Kilometre Array in the Northern Cape.

HERA is a US-led project that forms part of a large international collaboration representative of institutions from Europe, SA, the UK and US. The goal is to observe how the first structures formed in the very early stages of the Universe, as the first stars and galaxies lit up space.

Construction of the telescope began in 2015, with the full array reaching completion in 2021.

SARAO managed the construction of the infrastructure in close collaboration with US institutions. The instrument is now undergoing commissioning and validation of its data.

Peak of construction efforts The findings from the financial assessment of the impact study indicate the total direct investment made towards the HERA project is well over R70 million (R74 090 948), which was invested by the three countries from 2013 to 2021.

This represents the annual direct investment towards HERA from all contributing countries.

An increase in the direct financial investment is observed from 2015, which marks the start of construction of the instrument

These initiatives were supported throughout the construction of HERA, which has led to increased participation of researchers based at local universities in the collaboration, ensuring SA’s representation in world-class research conducted with this instrument, it concludes.

The objective of the engagement with Kolomela mine was to introduce UNDRIP and foster a long-term relationship.The United Nations Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous People (UNDRIP) was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly on 13 September 2007 with 144 countries in favor. UNDRIP is the most comprehensive instrument detailing the rights of Indigenous People in International Law and policy, containing minimum standards for the recognition, protection, and promotion of these rights.

UNDRIP recently visited Vanzylsrus as part of a provincial campaign to launch this global organization. A delegation from UNDRIP has also been in talks with Orion Minerals recently and further discussions are currently in the pipeline for Namaqualand.

A follow-up meeting is currently scheduled between Kolomela mine and the provincial executive council of UNDRIP.
