KYDP Visits The Northern Cape Provincial Government's Services Fair Last week Tuesday to Thursday 14th to 16 June 2022, KYDP was invited and funded by the Office of the Premier to attend the Northern Cape Provincial Government's Services Fair in Camden outside of Kuruman.

Our board members and project team built capacity as well as relationships and learned valuable and critical information for a more successful organisation.

We had the distinct honour of meeting Northern Cape's MEC for Department of Sports, Arts and Culture, Mrs Desiree Fienies as well as MEC for Department of Social Development, Mrs Nontobeko Vilakazi.

The cultural experience of riding on a donkey cart was not left behind.

We are thankful for the Office of the Premier that believes in us and for not only funding us but investing in the success of our organisation.

Grape Grower Goes Global Elize Beukes (63) is a Northern Cape farmer with global reach.

She farms grapes which are turned into raisins.

According to the department, raisin grapes’ peak season provides employment for 30 000 to 35 000 seasonal workers.

Beukes exports her raisins to the United Kingdom. Situated in Eksteenskuil just outside of Upington in the Northern Cape, Beukes has an eight-hectare farm. Two hectares are dedicated to growing grapes.

The MEC for Northern Cape Department of Agriculture, Environmental Affairs, Rural Development and Land Reform, Mase Manopole says raisin grape farmers like the Beukes family contribute about R2 billion annually to the country’s economy.

In January she harvested 93% and 73% of the expected yield from her choice-grade raisin grapes and golden raisin grapes, respectively.

The raisins are exported thanks to an offtake agreement she has with processing company Red Sun-Dried Fruit and Nuts.

Wine grapes and lucerne are also produced, says Beukes, who is grateful for the donation of lucerne seedlings from the Northern Cape Department of Agriculture, Environmental Affairs, Rural Development and Land Reform.

He says the global trend towards healthier eating provides an opportunity to grow the industry even more. “Raisins are versatile and can be used in a wide variety of food products, such as a natural sweeteners,” he adds.

Manopole says Beukes hires 12 people during harvesting season, and two seasonal workers during planting season.

Ritchie Taxi Official Resigns After Shooting Incident THE DEPUTY chairperson of the Ritchie Taxi Association (RTA), Ben van Rooi, has resigned after several shots were fired on his property on Friday evening, where one of his vehicles was damaged.

Elections were held for the leadership of the RTA over the weekend and Van Rooi was reelected as deputy chairperson.

He indicated that he resigned on June 19 following the shooting incident.

“Being shot at, living in constant fear and losing your life is not worth a position,” Van Rooi said.

He stated that he was asleep at his home in Ritchie on June 17 when he heard several shots being fired into his yard at around 11pm.

“My taxi was damaged on the driver’s side along with the rearview mirror. It will cost me between R15,000 to R19,000 to repair and I do not have any insurance. The same vehicle was petrol bombed not so long ago.”

He added that other members of the taxi association were also targeted, where acid was poured over their vehicles while the wheels of another taxi was deflated.

“There were concerted efforts to prevent the previous leadership from contesting the elections.”

Van Rooi believed that members

of the RTA who were vying for positions could be involved in the shooting.

Dit was die onderliggende vraag by 'n baie emosionele ontmoeting tussen NIEMAS en UNDRIP onlangs in Concordia, Namakwaland toe die twee Inheemse groepe mekaar vir die eerste keer ontmoet het om brandende vraagstukke te bespreek rakende die oorsprong, regte en ekonomiese voortbestaan van inheemse mense in die breër Namakwaland.

UNDRIP is die mees omvattende instrument wat die regte van inheemse mense in internasionale reg en beleid uiteensit, wat minimum standaarde bevat vir die erkenning, beskerming en bevordering van hierdie regte.

Radio Riverside Youth in Broadcasting Training Radio Riverside on year to year invites young people and gives them an opportunity to be trained in radio broadcasting, this project is done as a contribution to the up skilling young people in our community, the training is aimed at providing the young people an opportunity to have a certificate in broadcasting opening a path for them to be employable by any other station that might need their services. We invite youth aged 15-24 years and 25-30 years to be part and parcel of the training. Successful youth that complete the weeklong training are awarded with certificates at a gala dinner.

The participants of this program have no experience in radio and therefore we start from introducing radio basic skills, sharing concepts and models, and we give participants a chance to be involved in learning and improving their knowledge.

The training will use “learn by doing” methodologies to support theory lessons. The training is interactive, and it involves, discussions, hands on activities, presentations, planning.

This year it was 16 young people that were participating, the 16 was the best that was chosen after screening interviews were done; the training took two

weeks from the 6th to the 16th when the you lads were on air presenting shows they produced themselves.

Our Objective is to give the young people a chance at being employable. We want to give a qualification to youth in radio broadcasting. We want to create future leaders in the community.

The programme ran smooth, and speakers were knowledgeable and informed about what they were deliberating. The Radio Riverside Marketing Manager Ms Baker, Mr Williams from DKM and Ms Prins from GCIS contributed to the training.

Nadat hy in 2000 op Elsenburg gestudeer het, was die plaas sy voorland, darem uit vrye keuse en veral omdat die grond voorheen deur sy oupa en daarna sy pa geboer is.

MEC Manopole To Establish Nursery For Indigenous Plants Constantly Under Threat Of Theft From Overseas Interests THE NORTHERN Cape MEC for Agriculture, Environmental Affairs, Land Reform and Rural Development, Mase Manopole, said a nursery would be established to return and cultivate indigenous plants that were stolen from the Province.

During her budget speech, which she delivered in Kathu on Tuesday, Manopole stated that the Namakwa District had become extremely vulnerable to the poaching of endemic plants and reptiles.

“An amount of R700,000 has been allocated for the protection of the Province’s fauna and flora in the Namakwa District for the 2022/23 financial year,” said Manopole.

She added that confiscated plants were currently kept at locations outside the borders of the Province.

“It is important to have it returned to its rightful habitat due to its endemic status and cultural value.

“The department will partner with stakeholders to collect and conserve seeds of these endemic plants that are being poached to ensure we combat the risk of extinction of our plants. The seeds will be collected, treated and stored.”

“The establishment of a working group will ensure engagements with Conservation South Africa, appointment of monitors and continued engagement and working together with the SAPS stock theft and endangered species unit.

“Community engagement forms an integral part of the anti-poaching effort and Conservation South Africa (CSA). A non-governmental organisation operating in the Namakwa District will be engaged as a strategic partner due to its proximity to identified hot spots.”

She added that the department would continue with its engagement with the SAPS in the management of cases reported and with its participation in Operation Phakisa to ensure a coordinated response to illegal activities reported.

She added that a working group comprising of a research and development, biodiversity management and an environmental quality management unit would be established.

She pointed out that the natural resources in the Province could provide many opportunities in the immediate and near future.

Manopole added that harvesting of raisins had been very difficult during the 2020/21 and 2021/22 harvesting seasons, where the Northern Cape produced 88 percent of the country’s raisin supply.

“Both the Orange and Vaal rivers were flooded due to above average rainfall upstream of the catchment areas. The region also experienced above average rainfall that has severely impacted production.

“Increasing inputs such as doubledigit increases in electricity, fertiliser, pesticides and labour costs will impact the financial position of our raisin growers and the local economy.”

Manopole stated that waste management programmes would be rolled out across the Province in an effort to improve waste collection and disposal.

“This will be done by rolling out pilot household recycling initiatives, implementing community-based waste collection services where waste services are not currently rendered. Dustbins will be provided at parks.”-DFA

Labat Africa Majority Shareholder of Upington Cannabis Operation Launches Study On Management of Chronic Pain LABAT bought a majority share in Leaf Botanicals Upington which received a licence from the South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (SAHPRA) is expected to export the medical marijuana to Canada.

Biodata, a subsidiary of Labat Africa, a medical cannabis firm that is dual-listed on the JSE and Frankfurt stock exchanges, has launched a research project to test whether cannabis can replace opioids in the management of chronic pain.

The study will provide insight into the link between cannabis genetics and patient outcomes.

JSE-LISTED Labat Africa was on a high as it announced that, at long last, South Africa’s first ethically-approved cannabis clinical trials had kicked off.

Labat Africa said Biodata was the brainchild of Dr Shiksha Gallow, a cannabis clinician and the principal investigator in the trials, which took more than 18 months to get official clearance.

“Ultimately the study will involve 1,000 participants who have been taking opioids for pain management for at least three months and are prepared to switch to cannabis as an alternative,” it said.

The study would provide insight into the link between cannabis genetics and patient outcomes.

The study would also assist doctors across the globe with a safer alternative for their patients to treat chronic pain, Gallow said.

She said the chemovars currently being used in the study were Tallyman and Exodus, which were being sourced from Labat’s Sweetwaters Aquaponics South African Health Products Regulatory Authority (Sahpra)licensed facility in the Eastern Cape.

Other strains “specific for pain” were undergoing research and development at Sweetwaters.

Gallow told Cannabiz Africa: “We are currently recruiting patients, and data-capturing all the questionnaires and feedback from the patients for the live study. It has been fairly slow.

“Once we reach the sample size required and all of the relevant data has been collated, the results of the study will be published. We have currently renewed this study for another year, due to the initially slow uptake of research participants,” it said.

“The patients who smoked the cannabis had relief almost immediately, while the oil took some time to alleviate their pain,” it said.

Labat also said it was expanding its retail footprint over the next few months with the introduction of CannAfrica kiosks in major shopping malls and believed these would be the “ideal locations for physical-sign-up points for the study”.

In May the firm said it had secured an off-take agreement with buyers in Europe, particularly Switzerland and Germany as well as Australia, for the supply of cannabis products.

Labat said the kiosks would also serve as Biodata dispensaries and it was engaging with a number of vape stores to do the same, although these would have to be subject to Sahpra’s pharma-ethics requirements.

The pilot results of the study were promising as it showed 98 percent of the patients had some sort of pain relief from the cannabis, Labat said.

“We were able to wean these patients off their opioid treatment. In the pilot group of patients below the age of 55, it was shown this group preferred to smoke the cannabis, and patients older than 55 years preferred the oil.

Labat has been growing its horizons steadily.

Earlier this year, Labat announced that it had inked a memorandum of understanding with South Africa’s central research and development organisation, the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR).

The agreement aimed to solidify collaboration and cooperation between the CSIR and Labat across the value chain of cannabis and hemp production for industries ranging from pharmaceuticals to textiles to energy.
