There is no better starting point to explore the history of the windpump in SouthAfrica than Loeriesfontein in the Northern Cape Karoo.Acollection of 27 old windpumps is arrayed there, creaking and straining at their chains outside the FredTurner Culture and History Museum. Their rudder-like steel tails proclaim many brand names that have long passed into memory Here is a Gearing Self-Oiled, an Ace, anAtlas, a Massey Harris, a Conquest, a Hercules, a Spartan, a Vetsak President, a Gypsy Wonder, a Springbok, an Eclipse, a Malcomess, a North, a Beatty Pumper, a Dandy and nearly a dozen more. In the springtime, they all stand amidst the famous daisy blooms of ThereNamaqualand.aretwoother windpump museums in the world. One is outside a town called Foremost, in Canada’sAlberta province. The other is in the United States, where 53 specimens stand tethered outside the MidAmerica Windmill Museum in Kendallville, Indiana. FredTurner was a travelling Bible salesman and devout Baptist. In 1894, he settled here and built a trading store in what was then the middle of nowhere. It was Loeriesfontein’s first permanent structure, and now houses a Spar supermarket. The late museum curator, Ben Daniels, uncovered the history of FredTurner’s old smouswa (trader’s wagon) sold in 1919 to Jan Visser for £90.The Visser family used it for travelling to communion (nagmaal), for visiting friends, and for transporting sheep.That wagon made it three times over the Kamiesberg and through Bitterfontein all the way to FredHondeklipbaai.Turner’swandering life echoes that of the trekboers (nomadic farmers) of long ago, before the time of windpumps. The trekboers were subsistence livestock farmers who moved from the Dutch-colonised Cape into the Great Karoo from around 1760 onwards.They competed directly for water and grazing with the indigenous Khoi pastoralists and the nomadic San Bushmen hunters. James Walton, on writing a book calledThe Windpumps of South Africa in 1998, issued a plea that somewhere a museum be set up to preserve them. Loeriesfontein was the only town to heed his call, and now outside the old museum they stand like giant steel flowers, facing the wind.

SpaceX has significantly reduced the size of an “exclusion zone” for its Starlink Internet service in SouthAfrica in a recent update to its coverage map. AGRICULTURE, Land Reform and Rural Development Minister Thoko Didiza announced on Tuesday that all movement of cattle in SouthAfrica would be suspended due to the foot-andmouth disease outbreak.
Didiza also welcomed efforts made by farmers, communities and industries to curb the illegal movement of animals from known positive areas and to improve biosecurity on animal “Howeverholdings., the disease continues to spread, with 15 new properties and two new provinces affected in the last two weeks alone.”
Didiza said that the country is currently experiencing 116 outbreaks of foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) involving farms, feedlots and communal areas in KwaZulu-Natal, Limpopo, North West, Gauteng, Mpumalanga and Free State. She added that this decision is aimed at halting the continued spread of FMD in the country “It also means that cattle may not be moved from one property to another for any reason for a period of 21 days (reviewable weekly).”

Von der Meden’s investigation shows that there are links between human occupation and water availability in the southern Kalahari before 71 000 years ago.Around 20 000 years ago, during the Last Glacial Maximum, this link seems to break down as there are no tufas that date to this time (indicating drier conditions) although human occupation persisted. The findings are significant because this evidence challenges the thinking that humans occupied these arid regions only during wetter periods, and it may suggest aridadapted behaviours. “Tufas are not actively forming today. “This department expects the college to produce the best nurses, yet we have to study under dire circumstances. We do not have any textbooks.The college does not even have printing paper to print the work. Even worse, some classes do not have boards for the lecturers to write the work on. Some classes are hazardous and were never maintained. It is a disgrace, yet on the outside, the department boasts about having a nursing college enrolled with nursing students that will assist in addressing the shortage of staff in the Province,” they said. The students accused the department of violating their rights. “This department is oppressing our basic rights to having a safe environment to conduct our work and studies.The college lacks the basics needs.The toilets are not working. Both female and male students, including the lecturers, have to use the one toilet that is in working condition.The other toilets are not functioning and are blocked. The department does not even supply toilet paper to the college. We have to bring our own.These problems have been building up for many years and nobody seems to be taking responsibility for Frustratedanything.”

DUETO the ongoing shortages of resources and basic tools of the trade from the Northern Cape Department of Health, students and lecturers from Henrietta Stockdale Nursing College in Kimberley embarked on a protest at the office of the MEC for Health, Maruping Lekwene, on TheTuesdayprotesting students said they are currently supposed to be sitting for their examinations but are unable to do so as they do not have the necessary textbooks to study for their exams.
The head of ministry, Lorato Moleleki, told the crowd that the MEC would meet with the representatives from the college next “TheTuesdaycollege has had structural problems and defects that have hampered the accreditation. However, issues of textbooks, toilet paper and paper are not matters that require the MEC and can be resolved as the ministry does have the administration to do that.These problems have been ongoing and those who are placed in positions where these matters should be addressed should take responsibility for their work. It will eliminate such problems,” said Moleleki.
“We have been raising these issues with the ministry for many years now. We have also written several letters to the head of department, but nothing has been done.The MEC even conducted an oversight visit to the college and noted these problems, yet still, nothing has come from what he noted. It is truly frustrating to work under these “Ourcircumstances.handsare tied as we see the worsening conditions daily but are expected to motivate the students to continue and finish their studies.The worst part is that the nursing college is not accredited. However, this seems to not be a problem for the department.The Nursing Council visited the college and had not even one good word to say about the college. Urgent intervention is Frustratedrequired.”
