Africa Must Be Priority If Humanity Is To Conquer Hunger The world wants to end hunger, malnutrition and food security by 2030, in accordance with the UNmandated Sustainable Devlopment Goals. But it is only moving further away from this goal, according to a new United Nations report. Despite all efforts, Africa, the world’s second-largest continent, is getting hungrier instead of improving, the report’s findings show.

Read World is not doing enough to end hunger by 2030: UN Africa is only continent where the number of hungry people will increase, according to the State of Food Security and Nutrition in the World 2022 (SOFI 2022), released July 6, 2022. Some 310.7 million (46 per cent) of the 669.1 million undernourished people worldwide in 2030 will be in Africa.

The report also revealed Africa’s grim picture in 2021, when it bore the heaviest burden of hunger globally. One in five people in Africa (20.2

per cent of the population) or 278 million people faced hunger in 2021.

Sub-Saharan Africa accounted for close to 94 per cent of these 278 million people. This is an increase by 84.8 million since 2015.

In 2021, 136.4 million undernourished people live in eastern Africa, followed by Middle Africa (60.7 million), western Africa (57.3 million) and southern Africa (6.3 million).

East Africa is experiencing its worst drought spell in four decades. According to recent Oxfam estimates, one person is likely dying of hunger every 48 seconds in drought-ravaged east African countries such as Ethiopia, Kenya and Somalia.

The Sustainable Development Report 2022, the annual assessment of progress of all UN Member States towards the Sustainable Development Goals had also warned about the slow progress being made to end hunger globally, including Africa.

Three factors — conflict, climate change and economic slowdowns including those triggered by COVID-19 — are responsible for the rise in food insecurity and the number of hungry people SOFI has used the Prevalence of Undernourishment (PoU) to estimate the extent of hunger in the world. Thus, ‘hunger’ may also be referred to as

undernourishment. PoU is the estimate of the proportion of the population that does have access to adequate dietary energy.

SOFI 2022 was jointly published by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, the International Fund for Agricultural Development, the United Nations Children’s Fund, the UN World Food Programme and the World Health Organization.

UK Trade Visit Highlights Benefits of SA Raisins Key figures from the South African raisin industry have visited UK suppliers to develop trading relationships and explain the benefits of the dried fruit.

The trip in May saw industry body Raisins South Africa visit four of the leading UK dried fruit suppliers, highlighting the quality and low residue credentials of the country’s products and exploring opportunities to grow the market further.

“The experience was incredibly valuable,” said Ferdie Botha, chief executive of Raisins South Africa. “It’s been a while since we’ve caught up with UK suppliers because of the pandemic, so meeting face to face was an excellent opportunity to gain an understanding of the current UK dried fruit market and establish areas where we can offer support.”

Suppliers rate premium South African raisins highly for their clean and excellent quality, with the country a global leader

in reducing residue levels. The hot, dry climate of the Orange and Olifants River regions means disease and pest pressure is lower, and thanks to good biological practices and control, fewer chemicals are needed.

South African raisins are natural and sundried, with growers having invested in farming techniques and developed corporate strategies aimed at protecting the environment, public health and local communities.

The UK visit comes amid a challenging production season in which crop losses of 20% were experienced due to flooding and above-average rainfall. Despite that, the total marketable volume for the season is estimated at 67,000 metric tonnes, which is slightly above last year’s figure. South Africa is furthermore a source of prized golden raisins, which are difficult to obtain from other sources.

This past Saturday KYDP hosted our first Work Readiness Training where we trained 18 youth between ages 18 – 35 focusing on The Importance of Work Readiness,

After the training, the youth will then receive a work readiness attendance certificate as many of the youth has no work experience or qualifications.

Minister Mantashe Namaqualanders Need Permits In an effort to address illegal mining activities in the Namakwa District along the coast especially focusing on Oubeep, Kleinsee, Nuttabooi and Bontekoei, a joint operation was executed on 06 July 2022 and 07 July 2022.

Wednesday morning, 06 July 2022, when the police closed in on illegal miners in the Nuttabooi mining area. Approximately 300 illegal miners were found digging at the identified site where the operation was executed.

The joint operation was aimed at disrupting illegal mining activities, arresting illegal miners, the identification and processing of undocumented persons, and the confiscation of mining equipment and implements used.

The ground forces were assisted by two Squirrel helicopters from the Free State and Western Cape respectively as well as the Northern Cape fixed wing Porter aircraft that offered air support to members by monitoring the movement of the miners from the air and directing the ground forces.

Various SAPS components, the Namakwa District office, units, police stations and the DPCI assisted by the Department of Home Affairs, the Police Secretariat, State Security Agency and the Department of Minerals participated in the execution of the operation under the operational command of the Acting Deputy Provincial Commissioner for Policing, Brigadier Hennie van Rensburg.

YET ANOTHER ‘Turnaround Strategy’ To Improve Health Services scans and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans.

RMSH is the only tertiary hospital in the Nortehrn Cape, providing specialised services to the entire Province.

Lekwene said that health care is quite a challenging sector and that the Northern Cape is no exception.

“We don’t report our challenges, there are so many. We just issue reports of what we have done as a facility. The success stories,” said the MEC. “We must also thank our healthcare practitioners for the work they have done.

“This facility towed the Province for a very long time under tremendously fragile conditions, but our people are being serviced.

“We pride ourselves that 87% of the people in this Province get their health-care services from public facilities.”

The Provincial Hospital Services was allocated a budget of

Lekwene highlighted that the Province has the highest recovery rate of Covid-19 patients in the country.

He said the department tries its best, regardless of the fact that the budget did not grow at the same pace as the services expected to be rendered.

He pointed out that RMSH is gazetted for 604 beds with a total of 32 specialities and employs just over 1,600 personnel.

Of the personnel, 195 are medical doctors, 596 are nurses and 383 are allied health professionals and pharmacists.

Lekwene elaborated that there are more than 110,000 outpatient appointments recorded and 50,000 accident and emergency attendances every year.

“There are 17 out-patient clinics servicing 5,420 patients per month. The hospital also records 21,000 patient admissions to the wards annually. The average length of stay currently stands at eight days,” said Lekwene.

“In terms of maternity cases, the hospital delivers more than 3,800 babies. More than 650 babies, children and adults are admitted each year to the intensive care units.

According to Lekwene, the department is currently undertaking a comprehensive review of the health service delivery model as part of “resetting” the health system.

He said the department is introducing a new service focusing on optometry services.

“The hospital is in the process of establishing a vision centre and optic laboratory for spectacles to be made on site. This will be the second vision centre set up in the Northern Cape.

“Theatre services will be increased over the next three months by operationalising an additional theatre in the Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe Hospital.

This will increase theatre output and decrease the waiting times and backlog.

“We do so mindful of the fact that about 87% of the population of the Northern Cape is uninsured and depends exclusively on public health care.”

The facility has introduced radiation oncology services through a partnership with Icon oncology services based at Lenmed hospital in the last three years. A total of 251 patients were scanned and 183 patients have successfully completed treatment.

The MEC explained that many of these patients presented at an advanced stage of cancer.

He made a commitment for the establishment of a radiation oncology centre, which will be built as part of the department’s strategy to in-source the service.

The centre will increase the accessibility to radiotherapy services in the Province and provide convenience and shorten the waiting period for treatment. He said the hospital prides itself on the established partnership with the Smile Foundation to operate on

children with cleft lip and/or palate birth defects, of which 120 children have benefited from this partnership since 2017.

The institution also prides itself for having attracted five specialists in the internal medicine, orthopaedics, radiology and obstetrics and gynaecology disciplines.

“In addition, five medical specialists have been appointed on contract as a short-term strategy, while permanent specialists are being trained via the Registrar programme (ear, nose and throat; maxillo-facial; paediatrics; and obstetrics and gynaecology).

“Over and above these appointments, we have appointed in the last few months in excess of 160 staff for the tertiary hospital, mainly consisting of doctors, nurses and allied health personnel.

Drilling At Orion’s Prieska Supports Early Production Dual-listed Orion Minerals says it has received “highly encouraging” initial assay results from an in-fill drilling programme designed to upgrade the existing shallow inferred resource in the +105 Level Crown Pillar area at its flagship Prieska copper/zinc project, in South Africa’s Northern Cape province.

Fourteen in-fill holes were completed for a total of 917.87 m, designed to upgrade the existing inferred supergene resource of 630 000 t at 2.2% copper and 1.8% zinc to the higher-confidence indicated category as part of ongoing feasibility studies on the early production strategy.

This supergene inferred resource forms part of the overall resource of 1.76-million tonnes at 1.5 % copper and 2% zinc for the +105 Level Crown Pillar area.

The ASX- and JSE-listed company reports that drilling intersected higher-thanexpected copper grades in

several of the holes.

Once final results are received, the orebody model will be updated and the resource re-estimated.

The sampling density achieved is anticipated to allow an indicated classification, adding to the existing indicated resource of 620 000 t at 1.54% copper and 3.05% zinc.

The drilling programme was designed to in-fill an inferred resource area in the +105 Level Crown Pillar supergene mineralised zone to upgrade it to indicated resource classification.

Fourteen holes successfully intersected the mineralised zone, while five holes were abandoned owing to poor ground conditions and unacceptable core loss.

Assay results have been received for 13 of the 14 holes, with final assays for the last intersection expected shortly.

confirmed the presence of enriched copper and gold mineralisation in the previously drilled supergene mineralisation, which is currently classified as an inferred resource owing to the wider-spaced drilling.

The zinc grades confirm that zinc is depleted in the supergene zone.

The orebody model is currently being updated and the resource will be re-estimated and re-classified where appropriate.

An area of geotechnical collapse into underlying mining voids was also confirmed as being confined to a small zone with less than 10% of the mineralised strike affected.

“The in-fill drilling has confirmed and exceeded our expectations, returning outstanding widths and grades of high-grade copper sulphide mineralisation within the +105 Level Crown Pillar.

“This is a great result for our

team. At face value, the grades intersected to date mostly exceed that of the average grade of the standing inferred resource estimate, making the early start of mining via an openpit an increasingly attractive opportunity,” CEO and MD Errol Smart says.

Orion’s early production strategy aims to target the openpit and remnant pillars while dewatering is undertaken on Prieska Deeps.

“These results provide strong support for that strategy, with the higher-than-expected grades also opening up the possibility that we may be able to undertake shallow underground mining in the early phases of the development, further optimising financial returns.

Consultations between the Department of Water and Sanitation and key stakeholders across the country are underway to determine bulk water tariffs for the 2022/23

financial year.

Department's Director for Institutional Establishment in the Northern Cape, Tenda Rasikhanya, said two stakeholder engagement meetings, are scheduled for the Northern Cape.

"We are meeting with stakeholders in Upington at the Desert Palace on 20 July 2022 and the Kimberley engagement is scheduled at the Kimberley Garden Court for the 21 July 2022," Rasikhanya said.

Rasikhanya noted that supplying water to all people at an acceptable level of assurance and quality, costs money, both in terms of capital investment in infrastructure, and the operation and maintenance associated with water treatment, bulk water distribution and reticulation in human settlements.

In terms of the National Water Act of 1998, the department is required to establish an annual raw water pricing strategy after

consulting widely with different water users, including mines, industries, agriculture, energy and domestic users.

The Act states that the Minister of Water and Sanitation is required to establish a pricing for raw water charges.

The pricing of water is based on the Pricing Principles, including user pay, polluter pay, ecological sustainability, differentiated charges, accountability and governance.

SPU’s Talent Pipeline Programme For N.Cape Matrics The TPP was launched in October 2021 and aims to identify the topperforming high school learners in grades 10, 11 and 12 from a broad range of schools across the province.

These learners are invited to enrol in school holiday programmes at SPU during which they receive refresher courses on their school curriculum and take part in psycho-social educational enrichment programmes to prepare them for tertiary studies.

The 23 learners from the 2021 TPP intake who are now in grade 12 and will soon sit for their National Senior Certificate (Matric) examinations.

These learners received certificates and medals at the TPP Farewell and Closing Ceremony held at the SPU Multi-Purpose Hall on South Campus on Friday, 8 July 2022.

The learners included top performers from Danielskuil High School in Danielskuil, Umso High School in Colesberg, De Aar and Monwabisi High Schools in De Aar, and Hoerskool Diamantveld, Kimberley Boys’ High
