abangg continued its dream run at awards season but the battle of the Khans was won by the Badshah of Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan at the Zee Cine Awards in Singapore. Dabangg scooped up nine awards in all at the Zee Cine Awards in Singapore. It won Best Film, Best Debut Director for Abhinav Kashyap, Best Female Debut for Sonakshi Sinha, Best Music for Sajid-Wajid and Lalit Pandit. Item number Munni Badnaam scored Best Song. SRK won Best Actor by Popular Choice for his role in My Name Is Khan. Frenemy Salman Khan went home empty handed. Vidya Balan pulled off a hat trick, winning her third Best Actress award this season for Isqhiya. Guzaarish couple Hrithik Roshan and Aishwarya Rai Bachchan won the acting honours in the Jury category. Guzaarish is Ash's third film with director Sanjay Leela Bhansali after Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam and Devdas clearly, it's a match made in cine-heaven. Small Screen Star From dancer-actor to anchor SHVETA SALVE You were last seen on the second season of Khatron ke Khiladi in 2009. What has kept you busy? I did not find anything interesting on television, so I have taken a while to get back. I wanted to do something new and different after Khatron ke Khiladi. I spent all this time travelling across the world - it helps me recharge. Why did you decide to host Dance India Dance Doubles, a dance-reality show? The primary reason is that it is a dance show and I love dancing. People loved me in Jhalak Dikhla Jaa. So what better than hosting DID. I also love the format of the show. You were a regular on fiction shows. Will you be doing one anytime soon? I would love to, but only if something I haven't done before comes along. The role has to be interesting and challenging.

How is your chemistry with co-host, Jay Bhanushali? Jay is funny. He has made a place for himself on the show and has an amazing rapport with Mithunda. He is a great person to work with. What are your favourite shows on TV? I am addicted to 24, Friends, How I Met Your Mother and Boston Legal. Of all the roles you have played, which one's your favourite? I can never choose. This time for her fiction show on Zee TV, Ram Milaayi Jodi. With her Punjabi character Mona getting married to a Gujarati chhora Anukalp, there's a wide array of multi-cultural bridal finery in store for Sara's nuptials. With both families on the show fairly insistent on having the marriage rites performed "their way", viewers get to see Sara first don the garb of a typical Gujarati bride and then quickly slip into the fine threads of a Punjabi dulhan with equal aplomb! It all started off when Punjabi Kudi Mona's (Sara) Maama got the groom Anukalp drunk. "I was too stunned for words.", said a visibly upset Daksha - Anukalp's mother. "What kind of people drink on weddings? They dare they make our son drink? Nobody in our family has ever touched alcohol - there's a limit to everything." Mona's side had a different angle to it. "Well, Anukalp was part of the group. Mona's Maama simply offered him a drink. He could have declined itĂ&#x2013; he had a choice."

"I forgave Vivek because you know whether someone is serious or not in wanting to apologise, and whether he seriously felt bad for his actions. When asked if he would forgive Shah Rukh if he came to him and said sorry, Salman said, "I would rather stay away from such people." Industry insiders say it's time the two buried the hatchet. magine Dil Se's new drama produced by Reliance BIG Productions has been confirmed as 'Pardes Mein Mila Koi Apna'. The show set in Mumbai is a unique love story about Nirupama Yadav (Niru) and Chandu Bhonsle. It revolves around Niru who comes from UP to Mumbai for her father's medical treatment, all alone in a new city. She finds help in a friend by the name of Chandu (a Maharashtrian boy). However, the bitter rivalry between Chandu's brother - Sarje Rao and Albela Suman - Niru's suitor, threatens the blossoming love between Niru and Chandu. Will their love story overcome the hurdles thrown up by this enmity? Will their love weather the clash of cultures?

n the first half of the last decade, Shweta Tiwari as Prerna was television world's ideal bahu and perfect lover. Once her dream ride with Kasautii Zindagii Kay came to an end, she had to take on a new character. That's when Tiwari learnt to shimmy and entered reality shows such as Nach Baliye on Star Plus, followed by Iss Jungle Se Mujhe Bachao on Sony. Her ultimate boon from reality television came when she emerged victorious from the Bigg Boss house and Rs 1 crore richer. In recent years, the popularity of reality shows has grown manifold. Along with that its power to make television stars has also risen. A case in point is Ashmit Patel, Tiwari's housemate on Bigg Boss. The almost written-off actor who ushered in his birthday in style in Mumbai admits to the power of reality television. He even claims to be sifting through film and TV show offers currently. Not just Patel and Tiwari, recent years have proved that reality TV can make a star out of everyone, be it Mr India Pravesh Rana or television's bad boy Rahul Mahajan, who was facing drug abuse and wife-beating allegations, or motormouth Rakhi Sawant. Indian Idol, one of the first reality shows to gain huge popularity in India, has given India several stars, even though their star power didn't always last long. After Abhijeet Sawant and Prajakta Sukre, we now have Meiyang Chang. Even though Chang didn't win the contest, he went on to become the most popular face of Indian Idol 3 and hosted its next season. He even acted in Badmaash Company. "I haven't come across anyone who would say that reality shows haven't benefited them. The trick is to not over-expose yourself. I am what I am today because of Indian Idol but I make it a point to not do more than one reality show in a year," says Chang, who is currently taking part in Jhalak Dikhla Jaa. Last year, he hosted The Chair and later this year he is likely to be back on Indian Idol as its host. Though his film career has not really taken off, reality TV will ensure that he has a busy calendar. That's the case with most reality TV favourites. Once they have gained recognition, most of them keep taking up new shows. Rakhi Sawant has virtually created a career out of it. So has Rahul Mahajan, who was in Bigg Boss, Swayamwar and Chhote Miyan. Now his wife Dimpy Ganguly is ready to follow suit. She is likely to take part in Zor ka Jhatka on Imagine. This will be her third reality TV outing after Swayamwar and Emotional Atyachar. After portraying the bushy-eyebrowed Jassi in Jassi Jaisi Koi Nahi, Mona Singh found a place for herself in dance reality show Jhalak Dikhla Jaa that she went on to win and has ever since played the role of the boisterous host for reality shows and is currently the host of JDJ 4. The popularity of these shows lies in their ability to make stars out of nobodies.

our debut film was a roaring hit, what is it like to taste success at the first shot? It feels great to make a debut in a film that went on to become one of the biggest hits in the history of Indian cinema. However, this is just my first film and I have a long way to go. I have definitely been fortunate to get an opportunity to work in a film of that magnitude and to have been accepted by the audiences like I have been is very overwhelming. I believe strongly that success shouldn't go to your head and failure shouldn't go to your heart. What has "Dabangg" taught you? I've had three great mentors. Arbaaz always made it a point to add little tips to help me perform better. Abhinav (Kashyap) is the best director to have started off with. And Salman helped me right from the start. He pushed me to lose weight, encouraged me to get into acting, chose me for this role and has been a great teacher. This has actually taught me that the film industry is a wonderful place to be in. What's your role in "Race 2" like? Given that "Race" has been a stylish film, what's the makeover you will have to go for the role? It's too early to talk about "Race 2" But my look will definitely be glamorous! You've two films with Salman in the pipeline, why this attachment to your debut hero? I guess filmmakers have seen our chemistry and know that we make a great pair on screen. Salman is a great co-star to work with e share a great rapport and I'm comfortable with him. What's your action plan for 2011? My action plan for life has become my gym routine! Also, I'd want to do good work.

Rishi Kapoor will be doing something he has never done in his 40-year career - he is going to undergo a 'looks test' to see whether he fits the part of the villain in the film. This decision to try out a particular get-up to see if he fits into the meanie mould was taken by Rishi Kapoor himself. After the 'looks test', if Rishi is not convinced about looking the part he will say no to it. Rishi confirms the 'looks test' for "Agneepath". "Yes, I've voluntarily asked for a looks test to see whether I will be convincing in a mean part. If I look convincing I'd be confident enough to plunge into the baddie's persona," says Rishi, adding, "This is the first time in my entire career that I'm doing a looks test. Says an eyewitness, "Shah Rukh had planned a gig around Bollywood heroines over the years and he wanted it to conclude with Aishwarya's performance. He had planned to dance with her to "Kajra Re". But Aishwarya refused. Her argument was that "Kajra Re" was a family song and that she performed the number in "Bunty aur Babli" only with her father-in-law Amitabh Bachchan and husband Abhishek and that she will not dance to that song with anyone else. No amount of persuasion from the organisers helped her change her mind. Finally, Shah Rukh had to scrap this plan." Volatile Vidya Everyone's talking about ego tussles between you and Rani, while both of you are denying it... Because it's unbelievable for people that two actresses can get along. Firstly, I don't think boys believe that girls get along. And, we are not claiming to be friends. There was a good working equation between us. And I'm not the kinds to have a fight, I just withdraw. When you invest that much, in a friend, man, director, or anyone, you react also like that. Are you volatile in relationships? Yes. As much as I'd like to believe that I'm very calm, I think the truth is that I'm quite volatile. So, in a confrontation, one should steer clear of vases? (Laughs) Volatile as in, I'm not confrontational, like I will not indulge in raving and ranting, but I shut down, which is worse. Have you tested this on someone? Actually, on quite a few people. With dada, that is Pradeep Sarkar, I've had the most volatile equation - it's love-hate. Beyond my family, he's one of those with whom I've shared such a relationship and it continues to date. elina Jaitly is on cloud nine ever since her engagement to Dubai-based hotelier Peter Haag. The two have been engaged since Durga Puja last year, but only went public after some publications reported that they were secretly married. Celina and Peter Haag, who is an Austrian by nationality, exchanged rings at a very private ceremony in Mumbai last year. "There were just my parents... no one else. Yes, Peter and I exchanged rings during Durga Puja. It was an auspicious time and we had my parents' blessings. We don't call it an engagement because that term is not auspicious in our family. fter 50 years of its black and white release, Dev Anand is all set to bring his classic Hum Dono to screens in colour this month. "This time it will be in colour - Cinemascope and Dolby Digital," says the veteran actor. The global release of the film was scheduled last month while the Indian release is this month. "Cinema is a medium that touches emotions irrespective of language or culture. I am sure that the film will create a similar magic not just in India but across the world," says Anand. Patiala House Strict disciplinarian Sikh patriarch

atiala House, which stars Akshay Kumar and Anushka Sharma along with the evergreen jodi of Rishi Kapoor and Dimple Kapadia, tells the story of a joint family set in Southall, London. Patiala House's patriarch is Gurkreeat Singh Kalon (Rishi Kapoor) who rules and runs his family life just like a prime minister would run a government. He is a strict disciplinarian whose authority and rules are not questioned by anybody in Patiala House. Every addition in the family, be it a cousin or a cousin's cousin, all get accommodated in Patiala House and every new wedding results in the house and family getting bigger and bigger. Director Nikhil Advani says Patiala House is not a comedy. It is the story of an Indian Sikh parivaar living in England. A very dramatic story of a Sikh father (played by Rishi Kapoor), who thinks it is unpatriotic of his British-Indian son (played by Akshay Kumar) to play cricket for the British team against India. How the son's emotions and career takes shape is what the film is all about. Advani says the essence of Patiala House is pursuing your dream when life gives you a second chance. In this pursuit. Akshay happens to be a cricketer, but he could have been a musician or a poet. It can be your story or mine. Dhobi ghat Portrait of two Mumbais

iran Rao's script in Dhobi Ghat captures parallel sub plots. Pretty NRI girl Shai (Monica Dogra) comes to India on a sabbatical and sets off to shoot arty snaps of downtown Mumbai. She finds a guide in Munna, (Prateik Babbar) the deal being she will shoot his portfolio in return. There's Arun (Aamir), successful artist who stumbles upon a pile of video tapes on moving home, left by the ex- tenants. As Arun plays the tapes out of curiosity he discovers the narrator Yasmin (Kriti Malhotra) who, it turns out as the tapes roll, is suffocated by a loveless existence. Rao is impressive in the way she captures two Mumbais through the lenses of Shai and Yasmin. In essence, Mumbai itself is the fifth hero of the film as Rao draws a portrait of class divide. In a neatly canned shot, Munna reveals to the pretty NRI girl Shai that he landed in Mumbai from Darbhanga jilla because he wasn't getting enough to eat at home. He wants to be a filmstar - the next Salman Khan - and coyly asks the girl, a hobby photographer, if she'll shoot his portfolio. It is one of the zillion Slumdog moments in Dhobi Ghat. One could note the way Prateik acts in the scene. He isn't overjoyed, he isn't scared. What you take back from the shot is the silent hesitation in his eyes, which projects a sort of consciousness of the class divide between him and the uptown Shai who offers him a cup of chai and lets him sit on her living room sofa. The scene, as well as the film, tells you one thing: get used to Prateik Babbar. In Dhobi Ghat, an actor is born. Kiran Rao's film is just a sneak peek of the talent minehouse at hand.

Two women's resolve for justice

o One Killed Jessica is a poignant story of two women's resolve for justice. It's a remarkable blend of facts and fiction inspired by a series of real-life episodes, which has thankfully not been presented as a tedious biography or in a mind-numbing docu-drama format. It's more of an engaging thriller which has the right doses of histrionics, tautness, anguish and thrills. The emotional and disturbing journey, the strength of the common man and the relentless endeavor of the media have all been most compellingly put together on moving picture. Script-wise, director Raj Kumar Gupta has tried to remain faithful to the episode that occurred during a fateful night in Delhi and also what transpired subsequently, but besides depicting reality on celluloid, he adds the thrill element to the plotline, which makes it very viewerfriendly. Gupta put together the best and most appropriate cast. Vidya Balan has been basking in the glory of films like Paa and Ishqiya lately, which gave her ample opportunity to prove her dexterity. Vidya plays the iconic Sabrina Lall brilliantly, reliving some very stressful and arduous chapters of Sabrina's life. Balan is poignant yet controlled and projects an imposing figure of maturity, refinement and veracity. This film completes a hat-trick of her commendable performances. In the role of a spirited and audacious journo, Rani, who smokes non-stop, flings swear words every now and then and who rebuffs being a voiceless spectator when the culprits go scot-free, is simply exceptional. She sinks her teeth into the character, giving it the much required pragmatism that it necessitates.

In this interview, Karan Johar reveals why he's destined to remain a wedding planner all his life. So many hats. Now you're a wedding planner for Imran Khan? I happily helped Avantika and Imran with their wedding. They're friends. And considering there's no wedding in my own life, helping others with their shaadi is my way of living that experience. So, would you say that you are one of those sad wedding planners who have nothing for themselves? No, I aspire to be a wedding planner. I live out my own wedding vicariously. There's no shaadi in my kundli. Why the finality? I love my single existence. I love the fact that I live with my mother. I feel like I'm married to her. You are launching three new actors in your film "Student of The Year"? Yes, two of them - Aliya Bhatt and Varun Dhawan - are industry kids, while the other guy Siddharth Malhotra has no connections with the film industry. Siddharth and Varun were assistant directors on "My Name Is Khan". How do you cope with so many Malhotras at Dharma Productions? There are two Siddharth Malhotras, there's Karan and Punit Malhotraâ&#x20AC;Ś I think I was a Malhotra in my previous life. We actually have a Malhotra wing at Dharma. There's Dharma Productions. Then there's Dharma-Malhotra Productions. I think there's a karmic connection between the Johars and the Malhotras. How did it happen? I didn't go looking for Malhotras. Your chat show "Koffee With Karan" got embroiled in a controversy when Deepika Padukone and Sonam Kapoor bitched about Ranbir Kapoor. It has been controversial; sometime the show gets a little tabloid-friendly. I do the show with good intentions. I never meant to cause any distress or discomfort to any of my guests or their loved ones. The Deepika-Sonam episode created unnecessary controversy. But then enough has been said about it already. Will you continue doing your chat show on television? Not when I am directing. But then "Koffee With Karan" will always be a part of my life. Even kids call me 'Koffee Uncle'. "MNIK" is one of the contenders for nominations for the Oscars. Does that make it a competitor to Aamir Khan and Anusha Rizvi's "Peepli (Live)"? I don't think so. "Peepli (Live)" is India's official entry to the Oscars. I am not sure of the modalities. • Cilantro (fresh coriander leaves), chopped 1 tablespoon • Soy sauce 2 teaspoons • Bean sprouts 250 grams • Unrefined oil 2 teaspoons • Spring onions, diagonally sliced 3 • Carrots, cut diagonally 1 medium • Ginger, sliced 3/4 inch piece • Green capsicum, diced 1 medium • Sea salt to taste • Bean curd, cubed 100 grams • Spring onion greens, 1 inch pieces 2 stalks • Fresh coriander leaves, chopped 1 tablespoon • Black peppercorns, crushed 5-6

INGREDIENTS

Heat ghee in a pan. Add sweet potatoes and saute for two to three minutes. Add milk and cook. As the sweet potato gets cooked the milk will thicken. Add half the rose petals and green cardamom powder and stir and cook till the mixture thickens slightly. Add sugar and stir and cook till you get the desired consistency. Set aside to cool and place in the refrigerator to chill. Pour into serving bowls, brush the top with rose syrup, sprinkle the remaining rose petals and serve.

Heat milk with sugar, stirring till the sugar dissolves. Transfer into a bowl. Add saffron and mix till it dissolves.Add green cardamom powder to the milk and mix. Set aside to cool to room temperature. Add rose syrup and mix. Chill in the refrigerator till required. Pour into individual glasses. Crush a malai burfi and sprinkle over the top of the milk in each glass. Garnish with almonds and pistachios and serve chilled.
