Virginia Beach United Methodist Church SANDBRIDGE BEACH: This quaint, quieter seaside town is a great place to unwind and relax, and features five miles of sand dunes and sea oats. From KOA, turn left onto General Booth Blvd., go three miles south, turn left onto Princess Anne, stay straight onto Sandbridge Road to end, follow signs to municipal parking lot ($). The nearby marshes and open waters of Back Bay National Wildlife Refuge and False Cape State Park make for great kayaking, hiking, and fishing. CROATAN BEACH: The locals, especially surfers, love Croatan Beach, which is three quarters of a mile long. It has two designated surfing areas, one at the north beginning at Rudee Inlet and one at the south at Camp Pendleton. From KOA, turn right onto General Booth Blvd. and go 1.5 miles. Just after Virginia Aquarium, turn right onto Croatan Avenue, then right onto Vanderbilt Avenue to the municipal parking lot ($). CHESAPEAKE BAY BEACH: Gentler waves, better seashell collecting and great views greet visitors to Chesapeake Bay Beach, where they build sand castles, swim, play volleyball and much more. From KOA, turn right onto General Booth Blvd. Follow this road (it will change names several times), turn left as it becomes Shore Drive. Park at First Landing Visitor Center ($) (2500 Shore Drive, Virginia Beach), or drive farther and find street or lot parking anywhere around Lynnhaven Pier.

That’s what Virginia Beach locals affectionately call the Navy’s F/A-18 Super Hornet fighter jets that fly overhead. If you’re lucky, you’ll see them while you’re here! The F/A-18s are the world’s most advanced highperformance strike fighters. In Virginia Beach, they fly out of Naval Air Station Oceana, a U.S. Navy Master Jet Base, located west of KOA on Oceana Blvd. NAS Oceana is home to nearly 20 fighter/ attack squadrons. There are more than a quarter of a million takeoffs and landings at Oceana each year.
