Essay on Mahatma Gandhi Mahatma Gandhi, also known as Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, was an Indian lawyer, politician, social activist, and writer who spearheaded the anti-British nationalism struggle in India. He was born in Porbandar, India, on October 2, 1869, and died in Delhi on January 30, 1948.

He became known as the father of his country. Gandhi is well-known around the world for his nonviolent protest (satyagraha) concept of political and social progress. Gandhi was the Mahatma (“Great Soul”) in the eyes of millions of Indians.

Gandhi was the youngest of all in the family. His father, Karamchand Gandhi, was the chief minister of Porbandar, the capital of a tiny principality in western India under British suzerainty. He was a capable administrator who knew how to navigate the tumultuous princes, their long-suffering citizens, and the power-hungry British political officers.

Putlibai, Gandhi’s mother, was entirely involved in religion, did not care much for finery or jewellery, split her time between her home and the temple, fasted frequently, and wore herself out nursing when the family was sick.

The educational facilities in Porbandar were very traditional; youngsters at Mohandas’ primary school wrote the alphabet in the dust with their fingers. In one of his assessments his report was, “Good at English, fair in Arithmetic, and weak in Geography; behaviour very good, bad handwriting.” He was a shy kid who didn’t shine in the classroom nor in sports field. He enjoyed taking long, solo walks.

He took to ahimsa (non-harming of all living beings), vegetarianism, self-purification fasting, and mutual tolerance amongst devotees of various creeds and sects for the benefit of every human being in the society.

He was known as the “Father of the Nation” or “Bapu” for his contributions to Indian freedom struggles and his advocacy of nonviolence. Gandhi pushed for many nonviolent protests and demonstrations during the Indian independence struggle.

These demonstrations were held in the spirit of nonviolence (ahimsa).

Some of the movements headed by Gandhiji were: Champaran Satyagraha(1917) – Indigo cultivators in Bihar’s Champaran area were suffering under the Tinkathiya regime. Cultivators were required to cultivate Indigo on the best 3/20th of their land, and they were forced to sell it at a lower price. Mahatma Gandhi took a civil disobedience method, organising protests and strikes against the landlords and then the demands were fulfilled.

Khilafat Movement (1919): The Ali brothers founded the Khilafat Movement to demonstrate their dissatisfaction with the treatment of Turkey following World War I. Under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi, a movement was begun against the British administration in order to restore the Caliph’s crumbling status in Turkey.

Non-cooperation movement (1920): The Jallianwala Bagh Massacre prompted Mahatma Gandhi to establish the Non-Cooperation Movement in 1920. Gandhi ji persuaded Indians to initiate a nonviolent non-cooperation movement with the support of the Congress, which proved vital in achieving India’s independence.

There are many such initiatives that were led and successfully completed by our Father of the nation to be able to achieve freedom from any kind of rule. All these movements were peacefully conducted under the leadership of Mahatma Gandhi and many other freedom fighters.
