DR. CHERIESE PEMBERTON

Assistant Principal WESTBURY HIGH SCHOOL

Tenure Portfolio

APRIL 2024

It is an honor to prepare this tenure presentation for the Westbury Union Free School District. While tenure is a staple in education, it is most important that it does not change my unwavering commitment to serving children. I am a driven, visionary leader with a proven capacity for mission-focused culture and programmatic development. I am a highly dedicated professional with approximately 20 years of experience providing inspirational leadership and improvement to the quality of learning and development within the education sector. To date, it has been an honor to serve the children of Westbury for the past four years and I look forward to continued growth and development of our youth. This presentation will highlight some of the moments of service along my journey to date. Thank you kindly for taking the time to review the presentation!

REFLECTION FROM A WESTBURY HIGH SCHOOL SCHOLAR

High school grows you into the person you are. I have great memories, good and bad, some learning experiences and some that I’ll take with me the rest of my life. My high school experience has influenced my development as a person inside and outside of the class by making me more independent, choosing friends wisely and teachers motivating me to attend college and accomplish goal s I have set for myself. I have gained my independence slowly throughout high school. The importance of being independent is bei ng secure with who you are and what you believe in.

Freshman year I came to high school immature with the mind of a middle schooler. I struggled to find my classes and eventually ended up asking for help from several different people. I was hesitant at first because I didn’t like asking for help, but I also didn’t want to be tardier than I already was. I eventually did find my classes and I remember the relief of seeing the door numbers matching the numbers on my schedule. Eventually I adapted with the school and knew where I was going.

As the months went by I was not taking school seriously, and I was going to class late everyday: while I was on the football team. There was this one time in English the teacher was teaching and I was on my phone. The teacher told me to put my phone away multiple times but I was still on my phone so she decided to send me to Mr. Minor's office. When I got to Mr. Minor s office I explained why I did what I did but he decided to call my house. I beg him not to.

So Mr. minor s went to Dr. Pemberton asking her what should he do? Dr. Pemberton said from now on I'll take your phone in the morning and you will get back at the end of the day. At first I was upset and frustrated but I was like ok because at least I ain’t getting a phone call home. So the next day I gave Dr. Pemberton my phone in the morning. Surprisingly I was more focused in class an d as time went by my grades got higher and I was going to class on time.

Now that freshman year is about to end My grades were 80+ and my behavior got way better all thanks to Dr. Pemberton she had helped me a lot through my freshman year. I was not starting on the football team. I was on the bench the whole game and I wa s kind of unathletic but Now that freshman year is over now we get into sophomore year.

In the summer I was working construction and I was training for football. My sophomore year was better than freshman year because I was more mature and my grades were high and I was taking school seriously. Now I was starting on the football team and guess hard work does pay off. I was more involved in school activities for example My Brother's Keeper s, football team, Track & Field, and the wrestling team and I started to take sports more seriously. Me and Dr. Pemberton have this tradition where if average 85+ she will get me lunch which motivated me to keep my grades up.

As time passed by nothing really crazy happened and ended sophomore year on a great note. Summer of sophomore year I got another job as a summer camp counselor. It was great working as a camp counselor because I like to work with kids and I would like to pursue a career which includes working with kids as a pediatric nurse practitioner.
