New Watco Safety Award Goes to Alabama Track Inspector

Ian Price, of the Alabama Southern Railroad (ABS), is the 2024 recipient of Watco’s newly developed Safety Person of the Year award.

Price expressed gratitude and indicated he represented others at Watco who promote and practice workplace safety. “It is a big honor to be recognized for coming out here and doing what everybody’s doing for safety. I don’t know if I deserved it more than anyone else, but I do appreciate being nominated and getting the award.”

Joining the celebration were members of the ABS team; Safety Manager Todd Johns, Safety Directors Todd Hamilton and Randy Burington; Price’s wife, Lindsey; son, Joe, 13; and daughter, Ady, 9. Hamilton presented Price with an engraved crystal award.

ABS General Manager Cain Greene said Price was honored in part because of his safety leadership.

“When we hire a new team member – conductors, engineers, or someone in maintenance of way – before they ever work in the field, I put them with Ian. This was his idea, to deepen their awareness of why it’s critical for us to have safe track to run on. We put them in the truck with Ian for a week so that they can understand what he’s looking for and learn to look for that, too. The track laborers understand why they’re out there fixing defects. The conductors learn to see things more as Ian does, so that while they’re on an engine in the field, they can spot any flaw and report it before the track inspector even sees it.”

Greene said that Price promotes the team’s safety initiatives and has been averaging one safety suggestion each week, adding that Price is one of the most highly regarded members of his team. “A conversation I had with one of his track department team members illustrates this,” he said. “My track department is super-close. They hang out together outside of work. They’ve all given each other nicknames. But Ian doesn’t have a nickname. Instead, they call him Mr. Price, and I asked someone why. Their answer was: ‘Because he deserves all our respect.’ This is what everyone on the team thinks of Ian, not just the track department — our trainmasters, our office administrator, all 60 plus of us.

“To me, Ian is an irreplaceable team member. He is exactly the kind of person to represent Watco.”

Brad Walker, a vice president of safety whose focus is railroads, agreed with Greene. “Ian is a real asset, and we’re fortunate to have him at the Alabama Southern Railroad.”

Watco Brings Dedicated Freight Car Repair to Wellington, Utah

Go where the customer takes us. That’s the Watco way, and it’s our team’s go-to strategy to grow business across all of Watco’s services, including repair and maintenance.

So, when moving railcars to repair facilities became cost-prohibitive for some customers, Watco adjusted its strategy and added mobile repair teams to the mix. These teams travel to customer facilities in and around DeRidder, Louisiana; Richmond, Virginia; Paducah, Kentucky; and Houston, to inspect and repair railcar fleets.

In 2016, Watco introduced a new segment of this business: dedicated freight and tank repair locations. It started with one mechanical team on-site at a customer facility in Hondo, Texas. This customer would later add two more Watco repair teams at their facilities in Dallas and Mill Creek, Oklahoma.

As word spread about this service offering, Watco expanded its dedicated repair locations to Wisconsin, West Virginia and, most recently, Wellington, Utah.

“These teams interact with the customer in person every day,” said Bubba Lundy, director of operations for Mechanical Services. “They go to the customer’s safety briefing and review the agenda with them. They know and trust us, and they sleep well at night knowing their fleet is safer due to our team’s frequent inspections and repairs.”

To help launch operations in Utah earlier this year, four team members from Watco’s Coffeyville (KS) Repair and Maintenance Terminal traveled west to help out. They stayed for two months to start inspections and mechanical repairs for a Class I railroad customer as well as train four new team members.

Director of Mobile Repair Richardjames Drummondo said, “Thanks to the Coffeyville team, we were able to start air brake testing and repairs right away. Having boots on the ground on Day 1 was important to meet the customer’s needs without delay.”

Because the terminal is located 125 miles from Salt Lake City and 400 miles from Denver, mechanical support has previously been hard to come by. Before turning to Watco for a solution, the customer relied on its conductors and engineers to perform air brake tests and make minor repairs before railcars could leave the terminal, which often led to service delays.

That’s when they turned to Watco for a solution. Now, our team inspects between 30 and 90 railcars a day at the terminal. Additionally, they complete at least one extended haul air test a day and make repairs as needed.

Lundy said, “Like all our other mechanical services locations, the Wellington team is doing a fantastic job supporting this customer. With their help, railcars are moving on time without delays.”

Among the team members gathered at the Coffeyville Repair and Maintenance Terminal for a recent steak cookout was Welder David Bidleman, who has been with the terminal since the year it opened: 1985. The team got together May 22 to honor the 40th anniversary of this location and also celebrate having achieved a stellar Google review rating of 4.9 out of 5.

Two Fryburg Team Members Bid Farewell

This month marked a bittersweet milestone at the Fryburg Dedicated Terminal in North Dakota as two cherished team members, Kenneth Berg and Perry Thomas, retired. Surrounded by colleagues and friends, the retirees enjoyed a potluck courtesy of the team.

Kenneth, who served as a switching engineer for six years, is known for his versatility and dedication, having filled nearly every role at the facility. Perry, a crew supervisor for over 11 years, holds the distinction of being the longest-serving team member at the terminal.

What they did made a big difference in how the terminal works and to the people they worked with.

Kenneth’s resourcefulness and ability to step into any position ensured the terminal ran seamlessly, while Perry’s mentorship and steady guidance helped many navigate transitions and grow within their roles.

In their retirement, Kenneth envisions days spent fishing at the lake, while Perry looks forward to cherishing moments with family and embarking on new travel adventures.

Terminal Manager Alan Cheek said, “Both will be missed, not just for their skills but for the camaraderie and leadership they brought to the team every day. They left some big shoes to fill.”

Retirees Perry Thomas (l) and Kenneth Berg (r) congratulate each other on successful careers.

Refugio Retiree Leaves Legacy

Juan (JJ) Garza’s 10 years at the Refugio Transload Terminal in Texas left a lasting impression on his team and their customers.

“He’s an amazing team member, but JJ’s an even better person,” said Hilda Morin, terminal manager. “When we’re shorthanded, he always pitches in. He’ll help anyone without hesitation.”

Garza joined the team in 2015 and quickly established himself as a dependable jack-of-all-trades. He became more than an equipment operator. When Refugio needed it, he was a switchman, mechanic, transload operator, and even regularly cleaned up the facility. He also recently retired as a county constable. He and his wife plan to travel together following his retirement on June 30. The team will host a farewell luncheon for Garza and present him with travel accessories to help with their adventures. He’s also looking forward to spending more time with his grandson.

“The thing we’ll miss most is just him being here,” Morin said. “He helps in everything. We’re very excited for him but sad to see him leave.”
