Warwick Estate’s £1m

HAVE YOUR SAY Warwick Ahead includes every resident on the estate in a ten year project to improve the community and making it a better place to live. Based on community research and consultation over 18 months at lots of local events – a Community Plan has been written by the Warwick Ahead Board and just been gone into Big Local – Local Trust our funder.

The Community Plan includes lots of exciting projects that will start this year including a Community Bus for Knottingley, a Credit Union based on the estate, a new Community Venue on Pinewood Place, environmental projects, Luncheon Clubs, events and lots more.

If you are worried and think that your thoughts for the estate are not getting included or you are keen to have your say then PLEASE get involved. For any decision to be made on the £1m for the estate – residents need to approve it, that means come forward, have your say and help change things for the better.

There are lots of ways you can get involved. There is a monthly Community Board meeting which you are welcome to attend. There are also Interest Groups for Events, Evaluation & Publicity, Transport, Luncheon Club and Community Jobs, The Hub (new community shop in Pinewood Place).

Breakfast Meetings at The Addy

This group meets regularly and is hoping to inspire other groups to set up through the estate.

Chance to talk about anything local together with residents and agencies. Great networking opportunity. Breakfast included!

The next meeting is Monday 29th July at 7.00pm at the Addy The Group have recently launched a Junior Neighbourhood Watch Group called Warwick Watchers – run for and by young people.

Knottingley Food Bank The Churches Together Group with the support of The Trussell Trust Foodbank Network are launching a Food Bank at the Elim Church, Tithe Barn Road, Knottingley. It is hoped that the Food Bank will be up and running in the Autumn. In order to get going the Food Bank want: The Food Bank will be totally reliant on food and monetary donations and carrier bags and boxes.

Volunteers are needed to help with – food collections and distributions of food and volunteer commitment can be as little as 1 supermarket collection per year up to 4 – 6 hours per week.

Special thanks to everyone who supported the Dragon Boat Race. Addys Army raised over £500 to help fund trips for young people from the estate and came a respectable 4th.

Warwick Community Group

Former Chairman of the Adventure Playground was given a life time achievement award for his dedicated community service to the Addy. The Knottingley Angels performed brilliantly and the Warwick Ahead Community Plan film was shown.

The Shop has regular activities and meetings going on. In the spring the Group ran a very successful Family Day – the African drumming was a bit hit!

Another family event is being planned for Sunday 1st September – call into Pinewood Place for more details.

Warwick Ahead Big Local Training Courses at Northern College

Governance – 14th November 2013

Open to any residents who want to get involved with Warwick Ahead, Free including travel and childcare (limited places only) Measuring Impact & Evaluation – 23rd September How do you evaluate the work you are doing, and the impact the Big Local Programme is having in an area? This workshop will cover establishing baselines, measuring performance and impact, what criteria should be used to measure the effectiveness of your Big Local programme. How can we evolve the feedback we receive in to further action?

Community Research – 5th & 6th October The aim of the Community Research course is to train local people to carry out their own community engagement. The course looks at questionnaire design, household surveys, and focus group work.

The course will explore the skills needed to become an effective interviewer and introduce a code of good practice. You will have the opportunity to consider how you make community research a continued process and how it can help you collect evidence to help you to monitor the effectiveness of your work. The final, third day, would be held after some community research has taken place and help in data collection, analysis and presentation. This course will be delivered over three days.

The first two days being held residentially at the College and would include an overnight stay with bed, breakfast and evening meal included.

Preparing Your Big Local Plan – 12th October What should, or could your Big Local Plan look like? This workshop will cover the Big Local guidance, principles, identifying partners and project

What are the options in terms of governance arrangements for your partnership? This workshop will cover Big Local requirements in terms of governance, and accountability. How do you deal with large amounts of money, what is the role of your lead body and officers, what information do you need to gather/receive to make sure you can explain decisions you make. Are you open and transparent? How do you demonstrate good leadership, compliance with legal and moral responsibilities? Are you safeguarding your reputation and that of your big local partnership?

Zumba at the Addy Monday 1pm – 2pm - Delivered by a fantastic zumba teacher. Enjoyable, fun with lots of healthy benefits! £1 for the session. (stops during school holidays)

The Addy School Holidays FREE Open Access Play Sessions for children aged 5-16 (unless otherwise stated) The Old Quarry adventure playground also known as The Addy is on Sycamore Avenue, Knottingley. Over the summer holidays we will be running 2 x 2 hour sessions a day where children can come and go as they please and it’s free of charge.

There will be a varied range of activities from den building, arts and crafts, cooking indoors and out. Sports and team games, this may include using other green spaces locally, water play, etc.

We are also looking for a set of wheels such as wheelbarrow to make into “The Addy Cart” to help us collect loose material and junk that we can use on the playground to make dens and go carts etc. If you have anything to donate that you think we may find useful, please ring Michelle on 01977 670953, we can use pretty much anything, if in doubt give us a call.

We hope that with the support of the local community we can show you how children can play positively in and out of the playground. Feel free to join in too!
