for the highest execution and artistry scores. When asked what her first thoughts were when she won the cup Maia said: “It felt like I deserved it. I went in thinking I had to do my job like every other competition.” Maia’s comfortable win at NZ Gymsports National Championships puts the cherry on top of a very successful competitive year for her. To compete at Gymsports Nationals she had to reach a qualifying score at a minimum of two sanctioned competitions. The qualifying score depends on the level or step at which a gymnast enters. When the heats were held on Thursday, October 1, the top athletes, who made it into the finals, competed again on Saturday, October 3. In order to compete Maia had to travel to Auckland and back three times in one week. Maia belongs to Aspire Aerobix, a sports aerobics club with a studio at St Johns in Auckland and every school holiday she goes down to Auckland to attend workshops there. When she competes she is regarded as representing Auckland. “Maia did a fantastic job. She won firsts all year and wasn’t beaten once. She is an Energizer bunny,” said Maia’s instructor Amy Nield, owner and director of Aspire Aerobix in Auckland.
