Winter Athletes Earn All-American Honors at NCAA Championships

The winter season for Oneonta produced three All-Americans bringing this year’s total to five with the spring season coming.

Senior Meghan Serdock and juniors Kayla Clohessy and James Bethel all took home national honors in their respective sports.

2-0. Roseberry then scored an escape before Bethel registered an escape to make the score 3-1 late in the third period. Bethel tried to attack as time was winding down, but Roseberry held him off for the final of 4-1.

Bethel and classmate Austin Sisco competed in the NCAA Division III Wrestling Championships hosted by Wisconsin-La Crosse during the weekend of Mar. 10-11. Bethel earned AllAmerican honors for the second time of his career finishing in 5th place overall at 285 pounds.

Now in the consolation bracket, Bethel lost by major decision to Adarios Jones of Augsburg who was seeded sixth, which put him in the 5th place match. In his final bout of the championships, he held on to defeat Donny Rolston of Wisconsin Stevens Point 8-6.

Bethel was seeded fourth in his bracket and his first matchup of the tournament came against Merchant Marine Academy’s Victor Raigoza. Bethel easily defeated Raigoza by technical fall, 17-0. His next bout was against the No. 5 seed, Paul Triandafilou of Gettysburg where he won by decision 5-0 to advance into the semifinals. This is where day 1 would end for Bethel, who would have to wait to get his shot at the No. 1 seed.

As the final day of the championships opened, the only thing standing between Bethel and a spot in the championship bout was Zachary Roseberry of Delaware Valley who was undefeated on the season. The two wrestlers went through the first period tied 0-0.

Serdock and Clohessy competed at the 2017 NCAA Division III indoor track & field championships hosted by North Central College in Illinois.

Serdock was the top performer with her third-place finish in the weight throw to earn her first indoor All-American honor and second overall. Serdock recorded a huge personal best mark of 18.59 meters (61’), which also established a new school record.

Clohessy matched her seventh-place finish of a year ago to earn her second straight indoor All-American honor. Her final mark in the event was 5.61 meters (18’ 5”).

SUNY Oneonta senior Killeen Martin participates in NCAA Student Immersion program Two-Sport Athlete Attends NCAA Convention in Nashville, TN SUNY Oneonta senior Killeen Martin was selected to participate in the NCAA Division III Student Immersion Program that took place during the NCAA national convention in Nashville, TN from Jan. 18-21.

Martin represented Oneonta and traveled with other representatives from the college including Athletic Director Tracey Ranieri, Vice President of Student Development Dr. Franklin Chambers, Associate Athletic Director Ryan Hooper and Dr. Jennifer Bueche, who serves as the Faculty Athletic Representative for Oneonta.

The NCAA Division III Student Immersion Program is in its second year and provides an opportunity for Division III students of color, interested in a career in Division III athletics, to attend and be immersed in the NCAA Convention. The 42 program participants were selected from a pool of applicants from across the Division III membership. Participants had an opportunity to learn from an identified mentor, participate in a DiSC assessment and goal setting, and engage with the Division III StudentAthlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) while also enjoying all the Convention programming.

“Over the last two years the Division III Diversity and Inclusion Working Group has emphasized growing the division’s pipeline of ethnic minority professionals,” said Louise McCleary, Director of Division III. “The Student Immersion Program is an excellent first step to immersing participants into the world of Division III athletics.”

Martin, who competes for both the field hockey and softball team, was one of only three student athletes from the SUNYAC to be accepted into the program that included field hockey teammate Maggie Vachris who was unable to attend and a student athlete from SUNY Geneseo. Also in attendance were several other SAAC members from the SUNYAC. Martin was absorbed into an atmosphere of collegiate

athletics and a plethora of programming that included a session dealing with Title IX and the role of the Senior Woman Administrator along with participating in a DISC assessment workshop. She was also able to sit in on the Division III Issues Forum while attending the Division III Business session, which is where voting took place on various proposals presented by member schools and conferences.

One of the programs that resonated for Martin was a seminar on mental health where she learned that one in five student athletes report struggling with mental illness. She learned that administrators and coaches always must be on the lookout and be aware of the warning signs of possible depression in students. These warning signs could affect a student athlete, diminishing their academic and athletic results and more importantly their mental and emotional well-being.

The DiSC assessment workshop allowed Martin to experience a self-evaluation tool whereby her personality strengths and tendencies would show. This information can then be used to aide her in interacting with teammates and others based on specific leadership styles. Coaches here at Oneonta periodically go through a DiSC Assessment and Martin was able to experience it for herself first hand to grow her own leadership style.

At SUNY Oneonta, branding yourself to be the best possible person in your career of choice is taught to the students on almost a daily basis. Martin was expected to present herself in a dignified fashion everyday beginning with dressing for success in business professional attire, which was required of her throughout the duration of the convention.

As Martin learned, you only have one chance to make a good first impression and it starts with conducting yourself appropriately and dressing the part.

SUNY Oneonta’s Tracey Ranieri completes term of service on NCAA Division III Management Council Ranieri served as Chair of the Management Council during final year SUNY Oneonta Director of Athletics Tracey Ranieri completed her four-year term on the NCAA Division III Management Council with the conclusion of the NCAA convention held Jan. 18-21 in Nashville, TN. During her final year on the Council, she served in the capacity of Chair, which offered her additional opportunities to share in decision making as it related to Division III, which is the largest body within the NCAA. The Management Council consists of 19 members, and includes Division III Chief Executive Officers, faculty athletics representatives, athletic directors, senior woman administrators, conference representatives and student-athletes. The council serves 439 active NCAA Division III member institutions in 43 conferences.

The Management Council reports directly to the Presidents Council and handles the implementation of policies adopted by the Association’s Board of Governors and Division III Presidents Council. The council sponsors legislative proposals; make interpretations of Division III’s bylaws; and may also handle resolution of Division III issues and recommendations from other committees and working groups throughout the Division’s substructure.

Dan Dutcher, Vice President of Division III stated, “Tracey’s commitment and service to the Council were matched only by her passion for the Division III model and student-athlete experience. Her enthusiasm was contagious!”

Louise McCleary, Director of Division III added, “It was a pleasure working this past year with Tracey as the chair of the Division III Management Council. Tracey brings a high level of passion and commitment to student-athletes that was evidenced in every meeting.”

Ranieri served in many capacities and on many important committees during her tenure on the Council. During the past year, she served on the Administrative Committee and Strategic Planning and Finance Committee while serving on the Championships Committee, Joint Legislative Steering Committee and Convention Planning Subcommittee. She was also an ex-officio member on the Board of Governors, which is the highest governance body in the NCAA and is composed of institutional chief executive officers that oversee Association-wide issues. The board is charged with ensuring that each division operates consistently with the basic purposes, fundamental policies and general principles of the Association.

During the 2016 convention, Ranieri was appointed to serve on the NCAA Board of Governors Ad Hoc Committee to Promote Cultural Diversity & Equity. This committee was comprised of presidents, commissioners and athletic directors within the governance structure from all three divisions. The committee was tasked with developing strategic and funding initiatives to increase the cultural diversity in coaching, athletics administration and national office staff. Secondarily, the committee’s work included similar and equivalent strategic efforts related to gender equity with initiatives further informed by the recommendations of the Gender Equity Task Force. Dr. Bernard Franklin, the NCAA Executive Vice President for Education and Community Engagement, led this committee.

Ranieri is in her 10th year as the Director of Athletics at SUNY Oneonta. She has served as an administrator and coach at Oneonta for 25 years. Ranieri began her tenure at the college as the Assistant Athletic Director, Senior Woman Administrator and Women’s Soccer Coach in 1991.

By Amy Lynch, Freelance Writer on assignment for NCAA Although Erika Puffer, Christopher Johnson and Lindsey Rumenapp attended the State University of New York at Oneonta at different times, the former student-athletes found common ground in their love of college sports and pursuit of careers in law enforcement.

While Puffer and Johnson knew from a young age that they wanted to become officers, Rumenapp came to the realization during her senior year of college. Nevertheless, all three agree that the lessons they learned as student-athletes play a valuable role in their jobs now.

Johnson, born and raised in Long Island, New York, wanted to continue his family’s proud lineage in law enforcement and civil service by following in the footsteps of his father, an active member of the Fire Department of New York, and two grandfathers, both of whom were police officers. Therefore, when Johnson enrolled at SUNY Oneonta, majoring in criminal justice was an easy decision.

Similarly, Puffer has been intrigued with law enforcement for as long as she can remember. Even after beginning to study elementary education at Broome Community College in Binghamton, New York, her real passion for law enforcement won out, and in 2008, she transferred to SUNY Oneonta to pursue a degree in criminal justice.

Rumenapp thought she had her career path planned. It wasn’t until she was about to graduate with honors with a degree in psychology that she started to imagine a career involving law enforcement. Rumenapp’s strong desire to help others has provided her with the solid foundation she needed for a successful career in civil service.

“It was something I was always interested in but never actually thought of pursuing until my senior year of college,” she said. “It lets me make a difference in people’s lives.”

In addition to their pursuit of professions as police officers, Puffer, Johnson and Rumenapp were also passionate student-athletes on the college’s basketball, swimming and diving, and soccer teams, respectively.

After playing soccer and basketball at Broome, Puffer joined the SUNY Oneonta women’s basketball team. Due to an injury, she managed the team as a sophomore before taking the court as a forward during her junior and senior years. She fondly remembers the rewards and life lessons that come from working with a team, such as learning to communicate and collaborate with a variety of personalities. These experiences translate well into her current career.

Oneonta while playing on the women’s soccer team. She joined the team in spring 2010 after transferring from Hobart and William Smith Colleges after one semester.

“I had a great experience,” she said. “I met a lot of good friends and learned a lot about how to work hard to reach my goals. And I learned how to balance life, school and sports.”

Rumenapp believes college sports instilled a sense of discipline, enforced a solid work ethic and taught her how to effectively deal with stress. In 2013, these lessons came in handy when she took the civil service exam but failed to receive the job offer she wanted. Knowing sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, Rumenapp took the result in stride. After taking the test again the next year, she was hired by the Oneonta Police Department.

Johnson, similar to his SUNY Oneonta peers, credits his student-athlete experience with providing a solid foundation and real-world skills that continue to serve him with the New York Police Department. While pursuing his degree, Johnson competed on the men’s swimming and diving team for four years.

“Real life is tough,” he said. “(In college) waking up early for morning practice, balancing a full class schedule and afternoon practice while completing homework assignments at night, on top of maintaining a social life, was an invaluable experience.”

Puffer, a week after her graduation in 2011, landed a job at the Otsego County Jail in New York, where she remained for four years. In 2015, she completed the law enforcement academy and became the first female deputy sheriff in Otsego County.

“There are many things I’ve encountered in a short amount of time that have changed the way I look at people and at life,” she explained. “Success isn’t about the awards you get or the accolades that come your way. Success is being able to go home every night and realize the life you have makes you happy.”

Overall, the three civil servants view their experiences at SUNY Oneonta as an incalculable benefit that has helped them grow and serve their communities better.

“I want to continue to learn and become the best police officer I can be,” Rumenapp said. “I love making a difference in people’s lives. Knowing that I personally did something to make the community a better place or helped an individual is a good feeling.”

SUNY ONEONTA STUDENT ATHLETES HOST ANNUAL KIDS IN SPORTS DAY TO RECORD NUMBERS SUNY Oneonta student athletes, representing men’s and women’s soccer, women’s and men’s lacrosse, volleyball, men’s and women’s tennis, softball and field hockey hosted over 120 children ages 5-11 for the annual “Kids in Sports Day”. The numbers this year were the highest ever for the event, as SUNY Oneonta Athletics continues to synergize with the surrounding communities. The event took place on Saturday, January 28th in the Dewar Arena of the Alumni Field House and the Chase Physical Education Building from 10:00 a.m. to 2:15 p.m.

SUNY Oneonta has been hosting this event for 18 years now and it continues to be one of the highlight community service occasions for the athletics department. “Serving the community is a year-round athletic department commitment and I am proud that our coaches and student athletes give time enthusiastically to serve children during our annual “kids in sports day”. We get as much as we give and always look forward to the event,” said Athletics Director Tracey Ranieri.

The student athletes of SUNY Oneonta enjoy every opportunity to mentor young, aspiring athletes. The typically chilly Oneonta weather on the 28th promoted indoor athletic activity and enthusiasm as the children were exposed to so many sports that they can eventually participate in when the weather turns nice in the spring. The record turnout and the smiles on so many children’s faces as they participated in the activities was joyful for the not only the kids but also for the parents, coaches and student athletes alike. Head women’s soccer coach Liz McGrail added, “It’s nice to see the event grow every year and our team members are rewarded helping others and they seem to have as much fun as the children.” Head field hockey coach Kelly Kingsbury echoed, “Field Hockey is not as popular here in the local community but our players really get a charge out of exposing the kids to a sport they don’t see every day. Some of the repeat children from last year remember some of the skills we taught them and their retention tells us they are learning a great deal.”

Head tennis coach Lonnie Mitchel added his comments, “The sport of tennis is a lifetime endeavor and is something you can share. You just never know what will resonate and maybe when any of these children pass a park with a public tennis court, they will be compelled to pick up a racquet and develop a skill that can last forever.

Tennis team manager and former player, James Garzia said, “With tennis it is accessible almost everywhere and can help a child understand the importance of being active every day.”

The children who participated in this free event were treated to loads of fun and skill learning as each team spent time teaching the skills of their specific sport. The day was split into two sessions and the children rotated to four different stations during each session that lasted 20 minutes each.

SUNY ONEONTA STUDENT ATHLETES ATTEND “SHOOT FOR SUCCESS” EVENT AT SYRACUSE UNIVERSITY

A Sunday morning on the SUNY Oneonta campus is usually fairly quiet. However, not on Sunday, February 19th when 28 female student athletes representing all the female varsity teams met at the Alumni Field House brimming with excitement before heading to Syracuse, NY to attend the “Shoot for Success” conference. The Syracuse chapter of Women in Sports and Events (W.I.S.E.) hosted the event working in collaboration with Syracuse University Athletics. The panel was designed for women interested in pursuing professional careers in sports and events, the event will feature helpful how-to guidance and personal experiences from panelists on leading a successful career in sports.

The Oneonta contingent was led by women’s soccer coaches Liz McGrail and David Ranieri, men’s and women’s tennis coach Lonnie Mitchel and Athletic Director Tracey Ranieri. The student athletes embarked on a journey of not just another networking event but a day and an occasion that might just open the door of opportunity for our students interested in exploring a career in sports. The event itself was held at the Syracuse University Carrier Dome several hours before the Women’s Basketball game between The University of Notre Dame and Syracuse University.

As part of the total experience the student athletes watched the game between Syracuse and Notre Dame in courtside comfort before returning back to Oneonta later that evening. Katie Gorman of the women’s softball team, who took a Sports Sales and Promotions Class commented, “It was absolutely terrific to see firsthand what happens in a sports networking environment, which mimicked the classroom work I did last semester.”

Afterwards the student athletes were invited to a private networking session in a meeting room just off the main corridor of the stadium. Appetizers and soft drinks were served in a relaxed atmosphere as our student athletes met and chatted with several of the professional personalities present.

About W.I.S.E. The Syracuse University chapter of Women in Sports and Events—the first collegiate chapter in the nation established in Falk College’s Department of Sport Management in 2009—includes women from all majors interested in pursuing careers in sports and events.
