Winter 2005-2006

WOMEN’S TRACK AND BASKETBALL CAPTURE ECAC TITLES Five Track Athletes Earn All-American Honors The 2005-06 winter season turned out to be an overall success for the Red Dragons. Oneonta had numerous conference, ECAC and NCAA qualifiers along with two team ECAC championships to go along with its participation in post-season competition. Individually, Oneonta totaled eight SUNYAC champions, three ECAC champions and five All-Americans.

Women’s Basketball The womenʼs basketball team was supposed to be in a transition of sorts this winter as coach McGraw replenished his roster by bringing in nine freshmen to go with his upperclassmen. Along the way someone forgot to tell the new players that they were supposed to play like “rookies”, whom at times they did, but in the end these newcomers were key contributors to bringing the first ECAC title to the womenʼs program. During Oneontaʼs run to a 21-8 record the team only lost two successive games once while putting together a winning streak of six games during the month of January. Oneonta could have folded after being upset in the quarterfinals of the SUNYAC tournament, but instead used it as a motivator for the ECAC tournament. The season began at the Skidmore Invitational where Oneonta dropped its opener to Middlebury 61-60. The Red Dragons bounced back on day two to defeat the hosts 61-41 to finish third. Senior Gabriel Doemel (Latham, NY/Holy Names) was selected to the AllTournament Team.

Oneonta won its next four games before falling in overtime to Fredonia at home 63-59 during the first weekend of December. The next weekend, the Red Dragons brought home the big trophy from the Holiday Inn Classic hosted by Hartwick. Oneonta beat Mount St. Mary in the championship game 61-48 the day after out lasting Hartwick 79-75 in double overtime. Freshman Shannon Weir (Oneonta, NY/Milford) was selected as the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. Oneonta closed the year with a pair of games in Tennessee where they went 1-1 at the King College Tournament. They lost to the hosts 54-47 before defeating Union of Kentucky Gabrielle 71-48. Doemel The Red Dragons opened the New Year with a convincing 81-39 win against Manhattanville. Oneonta went 13-5 the rest of the way and finished third in the SUNYAC with a 12-4 record to earn a home game in the conference tournament quarterfinals. In the conference tournament against Brockport, the game went back-and-forth before the visitors slammed the door shut late in the game en route to a 68-56 win. Oneonta was chosen as the top seed for the ECAC tournament, which meant that as long as they kept winning they would be playing at home. The Red Dragonsʼ quarterfinal opponent was Keuka College from the North Eastern Athletic Conference. Despite being out rebounded 58-37 and shooting only 29 percent from the floor, Oneonta won the game 55-47 to advance to the semifinals against SUNYAC foe Fredonia, who had beaten Oneonta twice during the regular season. Round three between Oneonta and Fredonia would go to the Red Dragons, who left no doubts with an opening 11-2 run to start the game. The hosts never let the Blue Devils back in the game en route to a 23-point win 67-44. Senior Beth Branham (Norwich, NY/Norwich) would lead the onslaught with a season-high 20 points that included a perfect 6-for-6 from behind the arc. In the championship game against Elmira, it would be Doemel who would lead Oneonta to a 79-73 win. Doemel saved her best for last with 25 points and seven assists on her way to being selected as the
