2018 Graduate Kayla Clohessy Receives Dr. Delores Bogard Award Culminating honor after decorated four-year track & field career 2018 graduate Kayla Clohessy was the recipient of this year’s Dr. Delores Bogard Award from the State University of New York Athletic Conference. The award recognizes a cumulative academic and athletic career while a student athlete in the conference.

Clohessy becomes the fourth woman in school history to receive this prestigious honor and the first since 2006 when Athletic Hall of Famer Adrienne Jackson-Buckner was chosen.

Clohessy was also Oneonta’s nominee for the NCAA Today’s Top 10 Award which recognizes former student-athletes for their successes on the field, in the classroom and in the community.

Recipients completed their athletics eligibility during the 2017-18 academic year and will be recognized at the Honors Celebration in January of 2019 during the NCAA Convention.

“Kayla has always shown a strong commitment to both academics and athletics since she first arrived here at Oneonta,” said her coach Chris Wilber. “Her accomplishments in the classroom and as a school record holder, conference champion, and All-American, demonstrate her desire for success. We are proud of her and thankful that we were able to support her during her time here at Oneonta.”

Clohessy graduated in May with a degree in Fashion and Textiles while achieving a 3.52 GPA for her four years. Her academic and athletic accolades are numerous and include the following: Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Team MVP in 2016 & 2018 Three-time NCAA Division III All-American (Long Jump) Five-Time NCAA Qualifier SUNYAC Indoor Long Jump Champion, 2016 ECAC Outdoor Long Jump Champion, 2016 Six-Time All-Conference Six-Time SUNYAC Medalist (top 3) Indoor and Outdoor Long Jump School Record Holder Inducted into Chi Alpha Sigma National Athlete Honor Society SUNYAC All-Academic Team & Commissioner’s List Dr. Joseph Heissan ‘63 Senior Achievement Award

“It’s such an honor to receive the Dr. Delores Bogard award,” said Clohessy. “Four years ago, as a freshman I never thought that I would be able to achieve what I have as a student athlete at SUNY Oneonta.

As a recent graduate, I have quickly learned how special the athletic department is and how the relationships I built with my coaches, staff, teammates and professors helped to shape the person I am today. I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to be a part of SUNY Oneonta’s track and field team and I will cherish the memories, friendships, and accomplishments forever.”

The award is named after Dr. Dolores Bogard, who was an administrator and coach at SUNY Cortland for over twenty years. She served as SUNYAC President during the 1987-88 year.

The Bogard Award is given annually to a senior athlete who exemplifies the best combination of academic and athletic ability as voted upon by the membership body. In addition to needing to be a senior, the nominee must show evidence of outstanding academic and athletic achievement while having a cumulative GPA of 3.30 through the spring semester.

Tyler O’Bryant competes at NCAA Championships Junior sprinter earns All-Region honors Junior sprinter Tyler O’Bryant competed this spring at the NCAA Division III Outdoor Track & field Championships held on the campus of the University of Wisconsin La Cross. O’Bryant was the lone qualifier for the Red Dragons competing in the 100-meter dash.

O’Bryant entered the meet seeded 11th after posting a time of 10.60 seconds at the SUNYAC championships, which was a personal best mark and a time that won him the conference title. At the NCAA meet, he ran a time of 10.94 seconds placing 11th overall just .02 seconds out of qualifying for the finals in the event.

All-Region distinction, in addition to each of the members of the region’s top-3 relay teams. The regions used for this award – Atlantic, Central, Great Lakes, Mideast, Midwest, New England, South/Southeast, West – match those used during the cross country and indoor track & field season.

On the men’s side, a total of 743 athletes from 192 programs earned 948 All-Region honors. Five programs had 19 or more All-Region selections with George Fox leading the way with 23 out of the West Region. Rowan was close behind with 22 out of the Atlantic Region, followed by North Central (Ill.) with 20 in the Midwest Region, while Christopher Newport and Mount Union each had 19 in the South/Southeast Region and Great Lakes Region, respectively.

O’Bryant was an All-American during the indoor season after placing fourth in the 60-meter dash. O’Bryant didn’t lose a race that he competed in during the regular indoor season and carried that performance over to the outdoor season where he had the fastest time in the Atlantic Region.

His outdoor ranking in the 100 earned him All-Region honors from the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).

James Bethel attends NCAA Career in Sports Forum INDIANAPOLIS, IN – One of 230 current and former student-athletes selected to participate in the NCAA Career in Sports Forum, SUNY Oneonta senior James Bethel, a member of the Red Dragons wrestling team, spent May 30-June 3 in Indianapolis at the NCAA Hall of Champions networking, polishing her career skills and exploring various professional tracks in collegiate athletics.

In its ninth year, this unique, four-day forum is designed to assist student-athletes in charting their career paths, as well as provide an opportunity to network and learn from current athletics professionals.

The cutting-edge topics during the forum are presented by industry experts and include: how personal values intersect with career opportunities, how behavioral styles impact individual effectiveness, the key professional and career development information that assists with transition from a student-athlete to a professional, and the role of the intercollegiate coach or athletic administrator. Attendees will also network with their peers, as well as the key decision-makers at the campus, conference and national level of college athletics.

Bethel was selected from amongst individuals who expressed an interest in pursuing a career in sports, and who were viewed as leaders on their campus being nominated by their athletics administrators at their respective schools. Many current and past attendees are members of their Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC), the studentathlete voice within the NCAA governance structure. The selection committee is comprised of administrators and coaches within the NCAA, many former forum participants themselves.

Bethel will be entering his final season of wrestling in 2018-19 where he has enjoyed a tremendous career thus far. This past winter, he became Oneonta’s first, three-time All-American finishing as national runnerup at 285 lbs., which was the highest finish ever in program history.

His accolades are numerous with one year remaining as he tracks towards leaving Oneonta as its greatest wrestler in terms of wins and achievements.

“I was unsure as to what I was coming into when I first arrived at the Career in Sports forum,” commented Bethel. “But shortly after my arrival in Indianapolis I realized that it was just a continuation of the basic principles such as professionalism and accountability that I was taught here at SUNY Oneonta.”

When speaking about what he took away from the forum Bethel stated, “The most influential presentation that I attended was given by Penny Semaia, who is the Senior Associate Athletic Director for Student Life at the University of Pittsburgh. In his panel, he spoke to us about chasing our “err” every day. This “err” that he was referring to was “the continuation or pursuit” of our desire to be smart(er) and bett(er), to work hard(er), or to keep going for long(er). This reinforced what our MC, Clyde Doughty from Bowie State, had been telling us from the beginning of the forum, that “now is the moment that never ends”.

These two ideas brought to me the notion that now is the time to act, that now is the time to better ourselves, because now is the moment that never ends, and if we better ourselves now, that it will propel us into our futures.”

Sophomores Daniel Ioos and Kevin Mackin selected as SUNY Chancellor Scholar Athletes Albany – SUNY Oneonta sophomores Kevin Mackin of the basketball team and Daniel Ioos of the men’s soccer team were recognized this spring as SUNY Chancellor Scholar Athlete Award recipients. The two were honored for their work in the classroom as student athletes in SUNY. Both student athletes earned the Scholar Athlete of the Year awards from the SUNYAC in their respective sports.

The announcement of the 84 recipients was made by State University of New York Chancellor Kristina M. Johnson. The winners of the award, which recognizes individuals for outstanding academic excellence and athletic achievement, are chosen from a list of nominees that are forwarded from the respective athletics conference offices throughout SUNY. “It is my pleasure to congratulate our Scholar Athlete awardees for their achievement in the classroom, and on the playing field,” said Chancellor Johnson. These student athletes balance a challenging workload, while demonstrating leadership and service.”

Ioos has been a starting player for Oneonta during his first two seasons with the men’s soccer program, which has made consecutive NCAA tournament appearances. This past fall, he started 16 of the 18 games he played in and contributed a pair of assists.

Academically, Ioos carries a 3.97 GPA majoring in Business Economics. He has received the Provost’s, Susan Sutton Smith and Richard Siegfried Awards for Academic Excellence along with being named to the 2016-17 SUNYAC Scholar Honor Roll.

Ioss’ academic accolades this past year included being selected by CoSIDA as Third Team Academic All-American ®, which recognizes academic and athletic accomplishments. Ioos was also the recipient of the SUNYAC Elite 20 Award for men’s soccer, which goes to the student athlete with the highest GPA at the conference championship site.

Dana Del Genio earns Academic Honors from CoSIDA Junior selected to Google Cloud District 3 First Team

“Daniel encompasses all the values we look for in a Division III studentathlete,” stated Head Coach Iain Byrne. “He is a true leader on and off the field and he involves himself in various campus and community activities, is popular in the locker room and across the campus. All our best captains have led by example, and Dan is cut from that mold and we will be counting on his leadership in the next two years.”

The Red Dragons finished the season with an overall record of 15-2-3 while capturing the SUNYAC title. Oneonta qualified for the NCAA Tournament where they advanced to the second round.

Mackin followed up his outstanding 2016-17 rookie season with another tremendous year. He led the team in scoring with 334 points that included 82 three-point baskets, one shy of tying the program’s single-season record. The Business Economics major, who also is minoring in Sports Management, had a GPA of 3.86 in the fall of 2017 to bring his overall GPA to a 3.59.

Mackin is a Dean’s List student who was named to the SUNYAC Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll last spring. He is part of Oneonta OPROS (Oneonta Players Reaching Other Students), which is a group of student athletes who are peer educators on campus as part of an NCAA Choices grant that athletics received last April.

“Kevin is the complete package,” said Head Coach Camron Conover. He embodies what it means to be a studentathlete. He excels in the classroom and excels on the court. Kevin works extremely hard, and we are very proud of him and all his accomplishments.”

The Red Dragons finished the season with an overall record of 14-14 while playing in the championship game of the SUNYAC tournament for the second straight year.

Claire McMahon selected as the SUNYAC Elite 20 Award recipient in women’s outdoor track & field

SUNY Oneonta junior softball player Dana Del Genio earned academic honors this spring from the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). Del Genio was selected to the Google Cloud Academic All-District 3 First Team, which earned her automatic consideration for national honors.

Del Genio is earning District 3 First Team accolades for a first time. District 3 is made up of all the colleges in the state of New York. Each athlete is nominated by their respective Sports Information Offices who are members of CoSIDA. Del Genio had another solid spring for the Red Dragons on the field leading them in runs (39), triples (4) and stolen bases (23). She finished the season hitting .371 collecting 46 hits and driving in 18 runs. She had an on-base percentage of .439 and a slugging percentage of .516. Her performance earned her first team All-SUNYAC honors for a second straight year.

As a criminal justice major with a sociology minor, Del Genio currently carries a 3.82 cumulative GPA. She is a NFCA Scholar Athlete, the recipient of the Susan Sutton Smith Award and has been inducted into both Alpha Kappa Delta and Chi Alpha Sigma national honor societies.

Junior Claire McMahon was the recipient of the SUNYAC Elite 20 Award in the sport of outdoor track & field this spring. The announcement came during the 2018 conference championship meet at SUNY Geneseo.

McMahon posted the top performance in the two-day meet with her third-place finish in the 10K crossing the finish line with a personal best time 40:34.04.

Her performance earned her Oneonta’s only medal and selection to the AllConference third team.

The SUNYAC Elite 20 award is modeled after the NCAA Elite 90 program, which recognizes the true essence of the student athlete by honoring the individual who has reached the pinnacle of competition at the conference championship level in his or her sport while also achieving the highest academic standard among his or her peers.

SUNY Oneonta names Chris Wilber interim coach of cross country and track & field program Chris Wilber has been named the interim Head Coach of the men’s and women’s cross country and track & field programs for the upcoming year. Wilber assumes the reins after serving for the past four years as an Assistant and Associate Head Coach for the Red Dragons.

During his tenure at Oneonta, Wilber has performed a myriad of administrative duties in addition to coaching the jumpers and multi-event athletes. Wilber was involved in all recruiting for both programs, travel and budget preparation along with home meet management and program evaluations. He also was responsible for mentoring and supervising new members of the coaching staff.

As the jumps and multi coach, Wilber has mentored his athletes to numerous accolades at the conference, regional and national level. Wilber has coached three NCAA AllAmericans, 10 NCAA qualifiers, six SUNYAC champions and 65 conference scorers.

During his tenure with the Red Dragons, the men claimed the indoor team title in 2015 while the women won both the indoor and outdoor titles in 2016.

As an undergraduate, Wilber completed his B.S. in Health Education and Physical Education at Ithaca. He also competed for the Bombers track & field program, competing as a jumper. After graduation, he returned to Ithaca to complete a M.S. in Health Education while working as a graduate assistant coach. Wilber spent 2 more years as an assistant coach with the Bomber Men’s Track & Field program, working primarily with the jumpers. During this time, the men won six Empire 8 championships and 1 NYSCTC championship.

Wilber is a USA Track and Field Level 1 Certified coach and also a USTFCCCA Specialist in the Jumps and Combined Events.

Ashley Coyle named Head Volleyball Coach at SUNY Oneonta Coyle was named the head coach of the women’s volleyball program after spending the last 15 months as the interim coach.

Last fall under Coyle’s direction, the Red Dragons finished 14-18 and solidified a berth into the 2017 SUNYAC tournament. In the classroom, the team earned 2017 AVCA Team Academic honors and eight players received the 2017-2018 SUNYAC Commissioner’s Academic Honor Roll.

“I want to extend my thanks and appreciation to Tracey Ranieri, Associate Athletic Director Ryan Hooper, and the search committee for granting me the opportunity to lead the SUNY Oneonta volleyball program,” stated Coyle. “In the time I’ve spent on campus, I’ve sensed a lot of positive energy and I see immense potential in this program. SUNY Oneonta is an amazing place to call home and I feel extremely proud to be at a place that honors competitive excellence, academic achievement, and a commitment to community and service.”

Coyle joined the coaching staff at SUNY Oneonta in March of 2017 after spending two seasons as the assistant volleyball coach at the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, CT. Previously, she was an assistant with St. Lawrence University for two years (2013-15).

At both the Coast Guard Academy and St. Lawrence, Coyle was actively involved in all aspects of the volleyball program. At both stops, Coyle coached All-Conference, All-Region and All-American players. While at St. Lawrence, she also served as an assistant compliance officer for the Saints’ Division I men’s and women’s ice hockey programs Coyle is no stranger to the SUNYAC Conference. During her career at SUNY Cortland, Coyle enjoyed a winning percentage of .838 with a combined record of 140-27, highlighted by a 42-2 season and an NCAA Elite Eight appearance in 2011 where she led the Red Dragons with 3.29 kills/set, 71 service aces, and 3.31 digs/set. She finished her career with 1,803 kills (2nd in school history), 1,778 digs (4th in school history), and 614 single season kills during her sophomore season (1st in school history).

Coyle’s list of awards includes being a three-time AVCA All-American, three-time SUNYAC conference champion, 2011 NCAA regional champion, being named first team All-Conference three times, two-time SUNYAC East Division Player of the Year, three-time SUNYAC All-Tournament team, and in 2011, Coyle was named the SUNYAC Tournament MVP as well as the NCAA Regional Most Outstanding Player. Along with her on court accomplishments, Coyle earned a spot on the Dean’s List in 2010, 2011, and 2012.

Coyle is originally from Orange County, New York and holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Criminology from SUNY Cortland and her Master of Education in Educational Leadership from St. Lawrence University.

SUNY Oneonta tabs Brandi Lusk as its new women’s lacrosse coach Brandi Lusk has been selected as the new head coach of the women’s lacrosse program. Lusk becomes the 12th head coach in the history of the program that started in the spring of 1974.

Lusk is no stranger to the area having grown up in East Springfield and attending Cherry Valley-Springfield High School. Lusk also returns to the SUNYAC where she enjoyed success as the head coach of both the field hockey and lacrosse programs at Oswego State for eight years collecting a combined 103 wins. She most recently was the head lacrosse coach at Hartwick College where she spent the past two years.

“I am very excited for this opportunity to work at SUNY Oneonta and be a part of the women’s lacrosse program,” said Lusk.

“Oneonta is coming off a winning season and has a solid foundation in place from which to continue to build upon for even more success moving forward. This will be an exciting new beginning that I think the players and myself will be very happy to be a part of!”

While at Hartwick, Lusk guided the Hawks to back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in over a decade including an 8-6 record this past spring. In 2017, her first season with the Hawks, she guided the squad to a 10-6 mark. In addition to her duties as head coach, Lusk also served as the coordinator of physical education and advisor to the Student Athlete Advisory Committee.

Under Lusk’s tutelage seven individuals earned All-Empire 8 honors while the program earned academic honors from both the Empire 8 and the Intercollegiate Women’s Lacrosse Coaches Association earning a team GPA of over 3.0.

While at Oswego, Lusk was responsible for recruiting, budget planning, practice planning, game scheduling, tactical preparation, fundraising, monitoring grades and team building for both Laker lacrosse and field hockey programs.

In 2016, she guided her lacrosse team to one of the most successful seasons in program history, tying a program record with 12 victories to go along with its first SUNYAC playoff appearance since 2005.

The win total included a 13-12 upset of nationally ninth-ranked

Brockport in the regular season finale.

Lusk’s Oswego athletes earned 33 All-Conference selections, three SUNYAC Rookie of the Year awards, three All-Regions selections, and one athlete was named an IWLCA All-American.

As the head coach for HCCC in 2007, Lusk guided the Hawks to an appearance in the regional championship game while earning a berth to the NJCAA national tournament where the team placed third.

That spring, she was selected as NJCAA Region Coach of the Year.

As a student-athlete, Lusk attended HCCC, where she played lacrosse for two seasons in 2004 and 2005. She was a member of the school’s inaugural women’s lacrosse season and helped the Generals to a 12-1 record the following season. She was a two-time NJCAA Academic All-American, a two-time NJCAA All-Tournament Team pick, named the HCCC Female Athlete of the Year, as well as a SUNY Chancellor’s Scholar Athlete.

Lusk graduated from Herkimer with an Associate degree in Science in Physical Education. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Physical Education in May 2007 from SUNY Cortland and earned her master’s degree in Science and Education from SUNY Cortland in 2010.

Alumni Association honors Dr. Jane Grastorf, Timothy Distler and Dr. William Vining Former physical education instructor and synchronized swimming coach, Dr. Jane Grastorf, 2018 graduate Timothy Distler and Dr. William Vining, Chair of the Chemistry Department were honored during Reunion Weekend as recipients of Alumni Association Awards.

Grastorf was honored with the Emeritus Faculty Outstanding Service Award, Distler received the Student Leadership Award and Dr. Vining received the Current Faculty Outstanding Service Award.

Timothy Distler Distler was a four-year member of the men’s tennis team serving as a Co-Captain this past year. He was a two-year starter for the Red Dragons and collected career marks of 23-17 in singles and 30-25 in doubles.

As the student liaison between the Alumni Association and School of Economics and Business, Distler helped to coordinate the 2018 Backpacks to Briefcases program. He served as the site coordinator for VITA (Volunteer Income Tax Assistance), which helps the elderly and lower income families prepare their tax returns, was the Student Representative on the President’s Advisory Council for Sustainability, the President of the Student Advisory Council for the School of Economics and Business and is a member of the national leadership honor society, Omicron Delta Kappa.

Dr. Jane Grastorf After earning her undergraduate degree in Education from Cortland in 1962, Grastorf went on to earn a Master’s Degree from the University of Toledo in 1967 before receiving her Doctorate Degree from the University of North Carolina-Greensboro in 1980. She spent six weeks at the University of Oslo in Norway taking graduate classes as well as participating in a six week institute at the University of Michigan for administrative advancement paid for through a grant from the Ford/

Grastorf began her association with the college in 1968 when she was hired as an assistant professor in the physical education department. She was promoted to an associate professor in 1977 before being elevated to a full professor in 1995.

During her tenure as an employee, Grastorf taught classes in the physical education program, was the synchronized swimming coach, the Director of intramurals and recreation, facilities coordinator and the aquatics director. She was involved in various professional associations and organizations including serving as the President of the National Institute for Creative Aquatics from 1975-1978.

Since her retirement in 1998, Grastorf has continued to be a passionate supporter of the student athletes and the athletics department. She has been a volunteer for many NCAA events, announced at swimming & diving meets while being available as a mentor to the present coaching staff.

Additionally, she was College Senate secretary, the Panhellenic Association advisor for eight years, served on the Oneonta Mayors Cup Soccer Committee, was an esteemed judge for the Student Research and Creative Activity (SRCA) day and was advisor to both the men’s and women’s Rugby teams.

In 2011, Grastorf was inducted into the SUNY Oneonta Athletic Hall of Fame. She also endowed the Dr. Jane E. Grastorf Honor’s Room in 2006 located in the Chase Physical Education Building. Since then she has endowed a scholarship for women who are non-traditional students and continues to volunteer for the Alumni Association.

Dr. Bill Vining Dr. Vining graduated from SUNY Oneonta in 1981. He earned his Ph.D. in inorganic chemistry at UNC-Chapel Hill in 1985 and worked several years in the industry as a “laundry scientist” at Johnson Wax. Dr. Vining returned to Oneonta in 1988 as an assistant professor at Hartwick College. In 1996, he moved on to UMass Amherst, and directed their General Chemistry program, which serves 1400 students every semester. He was awarded the University of Massachusetts Distinguished Teaching Award in 1999, and the UMass College of Natural Sciences Outstanding Teacher Award in 2003. At UMass, he also ran a research group dedicated to developing interactive educational software, which included 15 professionals, graduate students, undergraduates, post-doctoral students, programmers, and artists. 100,000 chemistry students a year across the country now use the OWL interactive electronic homework system, authored by Dr. Vining and his UMass collaborators.

In 2005, Vining came back “home” to his alma mater SUNY Oneonta.

He thoroughly enjoys the high level of personal interaction possible with students and faculty in a small-to-medium department like ours.

Dr. Vining’s students have opportunities to undertake independent study projects under his guidance. And he continues his research efforts to incorporate the latest innovations in computer technology to create superior methods of chemistry education.

Vining currently serves on the Intercollegiate Athletics Board, a position he has held since 2013. The purpose of the Board is to oversee athletics and advise the President on matters pertaining to the operation of athletics with regards to budgeting, policies and participation. Vining also serves on the College at Oneonta Foundation Board.
