Women’s Soccer Wins Third Straight SUNYAC Crown Men’s Soccer Reaches Ten Wins For Third Straight Year Women’s Soccer Earns Third Consecutive NCAA Berth The women’s soccer team proved that there would be no stopping them in the post-Liz McGrail era as they continued their dominance in the SUNYAC en route to their third consecutive title. They ended the season undefeated in conference play for the third straight year while extending their regular season and overall SUNYAC winning streaks in the process. The Red Dragons currently have won 35 straight regular season games in the SUNYAC and 36 straight overall including the last three conference tournaments.

The 2001 season opened at the University of Rochester tournament where Oneonta dropped two 1-0 games to Keene State and Eastern Connecticut State. The initial win of the fall came the following weekend in the opening game of the Mayor’s Cup Tournament at Hartwick against Western New England College.

Two second half goals, including sophomore Megan Conboy’s (Rocky Point, NY/ Rocky Point) first collegiate goal, catapulted them to a 2-0 win over the Golden Bears. The next day Oneonta would face the defending National Champions in the College of New Jersey to decide this year’s champion of the Mayor’s Cup. The Lions scored two early goals and then shut down the Oneonta attack en route to the shut out victory.

The loss against TCNJ was the last one for a while as the Red Dragons ran off 18 straight including their two wins in the SUNYAC Tournament to earn a trip (continued, pg. 2, col. 1)

to the NCAA Tournament for a third straight year. Along the way, senior Amy Ducharme (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills) was a scoring machine. Over an eight game stretch she scored 11 goals that included at least one goal in five consecutive games. She finished the season as the team leader in goals (16), points (38) and game-winning goals (5) and was selected as the SUNYAC Most Valuable Player.

The Oneonta offense racked up 63 goals for the season and played in only three games this fall where they won by only one goal. The defense was just as outstanding with its Amy DuCharme senior leaders, Kristen Henniger (Lake Grove, NY/Sachem), Liz Grosser (Levittown, NY/Kellenberg), Hillary Pilosi (Dalls, PA/Lake Lehman) and Kristen Lynch (Columbus, GA/West (NY) Geneseo). This foursome, along with freshman goalkeeper Erin Hodges (Watervliet, NY/Watervliet), allowed only 10 goals including only one during regular season play in the SUNYAC. The run for the Red Dragons came to a screeching halt in the first round of the NCAA Tournament when they lost to Keuka College 1-0. Oneonta completely dominated play and held a decided advantage in shots at 26-1, but allowed the Storm to capitalize on their only opportunity of the contest.

Men’s Soccer Team Registers Double-Digits in Wins for Third Straight Year

Volleyball Team Reaches Twenty Wins Again

The men’s soccer team had another solid showing on the pitch this fall with their 10-7-1 overall record including a 4-2-0 record in the Atlantic Soccer Conference. The 10 wins for Oneonta was the third straight year that the squad has registered a double-digit winning season.

The significance for the program in general is that they had not had a string of seasons like this since the mid-’80’s when they put together five consecutive 10+ winning seasons from 1984 to 1988.

The 2001 season opened on the road at the Nike Classic hosted by the University of New Hampshire. The Red Dragons came home with a split after defeating the hosts 2-0 and dropping a 2-1 match to the University of Vermont. Junior Ryan Rummery (Biggin Hill, England/ Oxtego County) and freshman George Friedman (Stockholm, Sweden/Nacka) were both selected to the All-Tournament Team for their performance during the two games.

The second weekend of the season brought the opening of the College’s brand new soccer facility and the hosting of the Mayor’s Cup Tournament. UnforJme Amoako tunately Oneonta was defeated by West Virginia 2-1 in the opening game on the new field, but did bounce back the next day to defeat Mercer University 3-1 behind two goals and one assist by sophomore Jme Amoako (Brooklyn, NY/Friends).

The Red Dragons opened the regular schedule with a trip to Philadelphia University on Sep. 15 and were beaten 1-0 in overtime. Philadelphia, who would end up winning the ASC crown, scored 31 seconds into the first overtime period to pull out the win.

Oneonta would win four of the next five games including two 1-0 wins over defending ASC champion, Florida International, and Adelphi University.

The Oneonta State volleyball team had high hopes entering the 2001 campaign as the squad returned all of its starters from a year ago. The team did see many younger players contribute and gain experience and finished 24-18 overall for a third straight 20+ win season under coach Colleen Cashman.

The season started at home with the Oneonta Holiday Inn/Red Dragon Invitational on Aug. 31 and Sep. 1. The Red Dragons finished the weekend 3-1 and captured the Silver Lacey Musso Division crown while having senior Jayme Stewart (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) selected to the All-Tournament Team.

Stewart tallied 35 kills and 24 digs in leading the way for the Red Dragons in the tournament.

The next two weekends sent the Red Dragons to the Rochester area for the Brockport Invitational and the RIT Invitational. Over the two weekends, the Red Dragons went a combined 2-6 to drop their record to 5-6 entering a single match with Union on Sep. 19. Sophomore Lacey Musso (Wading River, NY/ShorehamWading River) was named to the All-Tournament Team at RIT. Oneonta dropped their match to Union and fell to 5-7 as they looked to the first weekend of SUNYAC East pool play at Cortland.

Oneonta came through their first round of conference competition with a 4-1 record with their only loss to Cortland who went 5-0. Sophomore Becky Leccese (Mt. Kisco, NY/Horace Greeley) led the Red Dragons during the weekend recording 23 kills, four aces and 14 digs.

The Red Dragons went 2-2 in Maine at the Bates College Invitational during the next weekend. They dropped matches to Tufts and Salisbury State and picked up wins over Wheaton and Plymouth State.

Next up on the schedule was the 32nd annual Oneonta State Invitational which included 12 schools competing for the top prize. The Red Dragons opened the first day with a pair of wins to advance to the championship bracket. Junior Jackie Leahy (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac)

Sophomore James Crofts (Godstone, England/Oxtego County) had the game-winner against Adelphi while senior Garvin Foster (Brooklyn, NY/Samuel J. Tilden) netted the winner against FIU. The next three games on the schedule went by without a win for Oneonta as they dropped a tough 2-1 overtime game to Lafayette, tied Iona 0-0 and lost at Cornell 2-1 to put the team’s record at 6-6-1 with five games remaining.

The Red Dragons snapped out of their skid and won four of their last five games including a season-ending 4-0 win at Howard to clinch second place in the ASC. Rummery led the way in the finale with two goals and an assist.

led the way for Oneonta. Her individual performance during the weekend earned her AllTournament honors.

The Red Dragons had a date at the Oswego Invitational during the second weekend of October and came back as winners of the Silver bracket. Musso had another solid overall weekend and earned All-Tournament honors.

The second round of SUNYAC pool play was held in the friendly confines of Dewar Arena the next weekend. Oneonta split the first night with a loss to Cortland and a win over New Paltz. The next day they clinched second place in the East with three wins to qualify for the SUNYAC Tournament for a second straight year.

The final weekend of the month saw the Red Dragons host the NYSWCAA Tournament. Oneonta was seeded 10th in a twelve team field and would be matched up with #7 Vassar in the opening round. The Red Dragons jumped out to a 2-0 lead and looked as though they would advance easily into the quarterfinals, but the visiting Brewers gained momentum to win the next three games. In the 9th place match they would be swept by Union to end their tournament 0-2.

It was on to the SUNYAC Tournament at Cortland where Oneonta would be matched up against Geneseo, the #3 team in the West Division. The Red Dragons defeated Kristine Clark the Blue Knights 3-1 to advance into the tournament semifinals for a second straight year.

Unfortunately their run would end in the next match as they were swept by Brockport to end their season.

Musso and freshman Cassandra Auth (East Patchogue, NY/Bellport) were selected to the All-Tournament Team as Honorable Mentions.

ONEONTA STATE WELCOMES NEW MEMBERS TO THE HALL OF FAME Nine Former Athletes and One Former Coach Part of Third Induction Class The College at Oneonta welcomed 10 new members to its Athletic Hall of Fame on Saturday, Oct. 13 at a ceremony in the atrium of the Alumni Field House. The ceremony was held as part of Homecoming/Family Weekend activities and this year’s class now brings the total number of inductees to 41.

This year’s class was comprised of nine athletes and one coach and included Don Axtell, Keith Benjamin ’72, Tina Diekmann Grigsby ’68, Keith McCarthy ’56, Desmond Munroe ’74, Ronald Pierce ’76, Michael Pocyntyluk ’85, Joseph Spanfelner ’57, Jennifer Willink Terwilliger ’85, and Roger Weaver ’76.

Axtell was the baseball coach at Oneonta State for 30 years and led the team to many successful seasons during his tenure. His teams won or shared 10 SUNYAC titles and Axtell is the last coach to lead the Red Dragons to a conference championship which came in 1993. Along the way he guided Oneonta to its only ECAC Championships which he did in 1974 and 1975 and was selected as SUNYAC Coach of the Year four times with the last coming in 1989.

A native of Waverly, N.Y., Axtell attended Ithaca College where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Physical Education in 1960. Previous to beginning at Oneonta State in 1965 he taught and coached for five years at Lavonia High, Clarkstown High and Delhi Tech. He retired to Hilton Head, S.C. and, this coming spring, Axtell will be inducted into the Waverly High School Hall of Fame.

Benjamin made his athletic mark in the sport of swimming where he was a dominant freestyler in all distances from 200 yards to 1,650 yards. During his four years of competition he set numerous Oneonta pool and school records while also setting records in the SUNYAC in the 200, 500, 1,000 and 1,650 freestyle.

Benjamin was a major contributor to three straight SUNYAC champion teams from 1968 to 1970 and was the recipient of the Fulton Award by the SUNYAC in 1971 for his valuable contribution to swimming. His career was highlighted by earning All-American honors in both the 500 and 1,650 at the NCAA Championships in 1971.

Benjamin graduated from Oneonta with a Bachelor’s Degree in General Education and taught at Union-Endicott Elementary from 1972 to 1977.

From 1978 to 1985 he found himself back in swimming as a competitive swim coach advisor and age group swim coach. In 1986 he began his life in the church where he has been since that time and currently he is serving as the Pastor of the First United Methodist Church in Wilkes-Barre, Pa. Grigsby was the first female swimmer to be inducted into the Oneonta Hall of Fame and was an early pioneer for that sport at the college. Her career highlight was setting a national collegiate record for the 20-yard breaststroke in 1966. She set a standard with her commitment to the swimming and diving program for others to follow during her fouryear career and served as team co-captain in 196667.

Grigsby’s professional life has been devoted to education and swimming where she has attained much success. She has spent 27 years as a teacher and coach for the Monroe-Woodbury Central School District and has had multiple State qualifiers for boys and girls while coaching an undefeated girls team in 1979.

McCarthy was the first great point guard for the men’s basketball program and was referred to by the late G.Hal Chase as “the most valuable player on the floor.” He played semi-pro basketball in the Buffalo area for three years before entering Oneonta State. During his career with the Red Dragons he

was the leading assists man and, by the end, was the player who would take the shot when the game was on the line. He returned to the Buffalo area where he taught and coached at N. Tonawanda High before returning to Oneonta where he retired after a long tenure as an instructor and supervisor.

Munroe was a two-year starter for the Red Dragons soccer team and was a member of the 1972 squad that played for the College Division National Championship. During his career he was an AllNew York State, All-SUNYAC and an All-American.

Munroe curently resides in the country of Jamaica where he and 2000 Hall of Famer Altamont McKenzie run a distillery.

Pierce was the first great track athlete during the early years of the track & field program. He was a four-year letterman and a two-year captain and MVP of the squad during his career. He was a two-time individual qualifier for the NCAA Div. III Championships in the 440-yard hurdles. He was a seven-time All-New York State track athlete and a two-time New York State relay champion while being a two-time SUNYAC champion in the hurdles.

During his four years of dual-meet competition he finished second only once while winning 50 times for a career winning percentage of .980. While working on his advanced degree at Oneonta he served as the track & field coach and helped guide the squad to a second place finish at the New York State Championships.

Pierce’s professional career has been involved in upper management positions of various companies and his current job is as the Chief Executive Officer, Director of Hire Intelligence, Inc. which provides turnkey software solutions for managing pre-recorded on-demand video applications.

Pocyntyluk is one of the all time greats in the history of men’s basketball. At the time of his graduation he was the all time leader in scoring and rebounding. His four years of honors includes ECAC Rookie of the Year in 1981, three-time ECAC AllStar, three-time SUNYAC All-Star and four-time AllNew York State while being a member of the 1,000 point club. After his graduation from Oneonta he spent time as an assistant for then coach Don Flewelling in 1984-85 and again from 1987-90. In 1985-86 he spent a year as a player/coach in Sweden where he averaged 37 points and 17 rebounds per game.

Spanfelner has a title that no other athlete can

ever claim, that of being the first captain of the men’s soccer program that began in 1955. He was the team’s goalkeeper for the very first season and his student teaching assignment kept him from playing his senior year, but the team voted him as an honorary captain.

Spanfelner was a three-sport standout with his other two sports being basketball and baseball. As a forward for the basketball team he was a two-year starter and reached double figures in scoring 25 times during his sophomore and junior seasons. During the spring he was mowing down opponents to where he completed an 18-1 career record with three straight undefeated seasons from 1955-57.

Spanfelner spent 20 years as a teacher and coach at Proctor High School in Utica, N.Y. until his retirement in 1991. In 1966 his basketball team won the Section 3, Class A championship.

Willink Terwilliger was a standout for the field hockey and lacrosse teams during the early 80’s. She is the third leading scorer all time with 114 points in field hockey including 50 goals. She was the field hockey team MVP in 1982 and was an All-New York State selection in both field hockey and lacrosse. Her academic achievements earned her the Charles W. Hunt Scholarship for distinguished academic achievement while being chosen as the first recipient of the female Scholar-Athlete Award for the SUNYAC in 1983-84.

Willink Terwilliger’s professional career has been as a teacher and coach in the Penfield and Brighton school systems. She currently is the field hockey coach at Penfield High where her teams have won the Monroe County championship five out of the last six years.

Weaver was drafted by the Detroit Tigers in 1976 in the 16th round after a stellar four-year career on the hill and in the outfield for the Red Dragons baseball program. During his career he was a SUNYAC All-Star three times and was instrumental in leading the 1974 squad to the ECAC Upsate New York Championship. His career highlight was throwing a no-hitter against Brooklyn College in 1975. He spent five years in the Tigers’ Organization and pitched for the major league team in the 1980 season where he went 3-4 with a 4.10 earned run average.

A native of St. Johnsville, N.Y., Weaver currently resides in Canojoharie where he is a Market Representative for Fulmont Mutual Insurance Company.

Women’s Tennis Team Posts Another Winning Season

Men’s and Women’s Cross Country Teams Make Strides

The women’s tennis team was reworked and reloaded and continued their winning ways in 2001 as they put together their third straight winning season. Coach Ed O’Malley used returning players and mixed in some solid newcomers to finish 9-4 in dual matches.

The squad came out of the gates strong as they won their first four matches to start the season. The first weekend of the fall took the team to Plattsburgh where they defeated Green Mountain College, Potsdam and the host. In their home opener against Russell Sage, freshman Pam Katz (Suffern, NY/Suffern) won the clinching match in straight sets to propel the Red Dragons to a 5-4 win over the Gators and keep the team’s record unblemished.

Oneonta then dropped two in a row: a 6-3 loss to Rensselaer and a 5-4 loss to Geneseo, before pulling out a 5-4 victory over Brockport to put their record at 5-2 through Libby Kent the first half of the season. The Red Dragons then won two out of their next three matches entering the Rolex Regionals at William Smith at the end of September.

At the Rolex, freshman Libby Kent (Binghamton, NY/Binghamton) advanced into the quarterfinals before having to retire up one set to the #6 seed in the tournament. Kent entered as an unseeded player and quickly advanced through the first two rounds with straight set wins. In the third round she needed three sets and over four hours to put away the #4 seed, 6-7, 7-6, 6-4. In the quarterfinals she was up one set but just couldn’t continue and had to retire.

Oneonta finished their dual match season with wins over Union and Oswego and a loss to Ithaca for their final 9-4 record. They entered the SUNYAC Championship in good shape with all their players healthy and looking to make a run at the top spot.

Despite winning two of their three final games of the season, the field hockey team found the going tough again this fall as they finished 5-12 overall and 1-4 in the SUNYAC. The major problem seemed to be on the offensive end as they lost three games 1-0 and three games 2-1.

The season opened at Rensselaer with 12 players on the Oneonta roster who were sophomores or freshmen. The team was defeated 3-0, but looked ahead to their next date at Utica College. Against the Pioneers, Oneonta got a goal from junior Brooke Thomson (Bennngton, VT/ Hoosick Falls) with less than 15 minutes remaining in the second half to tie the score at 1-1. The two teams were still tied at the end of regulation and went to 7 vs.

7 sudden victory overtime. It wasn’t until the second overtime that senior Nicole McCullagh (Camden, NY/Camden) put home the game-winner with an assist from freshman Meghan Donnelly (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy).

The Red Dragons then lost three straight including a 2-1 loss to Nazareth that was settled in penalty stroke play. Oneonta Jen Mollen recorded their second win of the season against Elmira 20 as senior Jen Mollen (Vestal, NY/Vestal) tallied both goals for the Red Dragons in leading the squad to victory.

Oneonta then dropped five straight games including two by the score of 1-0 and a third by the score of 2-1 to drop their record to 3-11 entering the final week of games. The Red Dragons regrouped and won their final two home games of the season in convincing fashion. A 2-0 shutout victory against Hamilton and a 3-1 win over Manhattanville allowed the seniors to finish on a winning note at their home-for-ayear, Swart-Wilcox Field. The season ended at Oswego with a 1-0 loss for the 5-12 final record.

Second-year cross country coach, Matt LoPiccolo, was optimistic but guarded about his team’s chances in 2001.

He returned a solid nucleus of runners on both the men’s and women’s side, but was looking for his first class of recruits to fit in and elevate the overall performance throughout the fall season.

From their opening meet at Plattsburgh, it was apparent that both teams would be improved over 2000.

The women ran third overall as a team as sophomore Jessica Tylutki Brian Suozzo (Remsen, NY/New Hartford) took ninth overall. The men ran seventh overall and were led by newcomer Brian Suozzo (Franklin, NY/Franklin) who also ran ninth.

Suozzo would end up being the top finisher in every meet during the season for the Red Dragons. His 10th place finish at the ECAC Championships would earn him All-ECAC honors to make him the first Oneonta runner to garner such an honor.

The men’s team was balanced off by senior Lee Lurie (N. Babylon, NY/N. Babylon), junior Eric Duffy (Montrose, NY/Hendrick), sophomore Dan Verdi (Savannah, NY/Clyde-Savannah) and freshmen Anthony Cordero (Port Jefferson Station, NY/Comsewogue), Bryan Reles (Cicero, NY/Cicero-N. Syracuse) and Matt Valcik (Latham, NY/ Shaker).

The leading runner on the women’s side was just about split down the middle as Tylutki and senior Sara Snyder (Schenectady, NY/ Sara Snyder Schalmont) went back-and-forth during the season. Tylutki ended up being the top finisher for the Red Dragons five

Men’s Cross Country

have two individual SUNYAC Champions. Kent held her top seeding at second singles to take the title while classmate Catherine Lodico (Elmira, NY/Elmira Free Academy) used her #1 seeding and swept through third singles to win the title.

The Red Dragons qualified for the NYSWCAA Tournament for a second straight year and competed as one of the sixteen teams during the second weekend of October. Unfortunately, Oneonta tied for 11th place overall with no individual advancing past the quarterfinals in the tournament as the season ended.
