This February, Maidstone Town Centre was host to the first ever Maidstone Light Up Festival. The event, brought to you by OneMaidstone BID and Cohesion Plus, included a lantern parade, street entertainers and a light show finale outside the town hall.
Ahead of the event 9 local schools and some 600 children took part in free artistic workshops, delivered by Same Sky Arts, to create their own unique lanterns which they showcased during the parade. The festival welcomed thousands of visitors to Maidstone Town Centre and was a wonderful community event.
We would like to extend a huge thank you to the event partners, performers, schools and all of the incredibly creative children who made the hundreds of lanterns that lit up our streets so beautifully.
You can watch our Maidstone Light Up Festival highlights video here:
“We welcomed in the light to the County Town of Maidstone with schools and community groups coming together to enjoy the family friendly festival atmosphere created by our partners Cohesion Plus and supported by Maidstone Borough Council, Kent County Council, and Mid Kent Mind. For a first-year event, we are delighted with the support and look forward to the opportunity to help grow the event next year, pending a successful term two ballot at the end of June. Thank you to the business community for making this type of event possible.”

OneMaidstone BID have been conducting a series of consultation sessions with the businesses of Maidstone Town Centre. The purpose of the consultations is to give the businesses of Maidstone an opportunity to share their thoughts, ideas and concerns with the OneMaidstone BID team.
Business Improvement Districts (BIDs) across the UK exist to serve the businesses within their district. At OneMaidstone BID, we serve our businesses by providing a variety of services which improve the town centre and provide a stable, enjoyable and safe environment for our local economy to thrive.
Our consultations each covered a specific topic, allowing our businesses to deep dive into the topic and speak with us directly. We would like to thank all of the businesses who attended our consultations, your suggestions are helping us to shape our proposed business plan for the future of our town.
If you would like to learn more about what OneMaistone BID has been doing for Maidstone town centre, you can watch our video here!
ABusiness Improvement District (or BID for short) is a business led partnership which is created through a ballot process to deliver additional services to local businesses. As these services are outside the scope of the local Councils’ responsibility, the services that a BID provides would not exist in a town if the BID was not in place. If you’re a business in Maidstone town centre, this is where your vote will count.
OneMaidstone BID provides, amongst other things: the town centre business crime reduction partnership, town centre Ambassadors, CCTV monitoring, town centre events, the Christmas lights scheme, promotional materials including a seasonal magazine, enhanced and responsive cleansing.
Maidstone voted yes for its BID in 2018. BIDs normally operate on a five year term, and Maidstone’s first term will conclude in September 2023.
If you’re a business in Maidstone Town Centre and would like to find out more about the ballot process and what OneMaidstone BID has done for you during the 2018-2023 term, please visit www.onemaidstonereview.co.uk

Throughout Septmeber 2022, Maidstone was host to The Knife Angel. An 8.5m high sculpture, made from over 100,000 blades, weapons and knives surrendered from knife amnesties across the UK.
Facilitated by OneMaidstone BID, Maidstone became the 25th location to host The Knife Angel on it’s national tour, raising awareness and providing accompanying educational resources for the community. As part of our work, we committed to hand delivering the pledge book to 10 Downing Street.
This March we had the honour of representing the community of Maidstone by knocking on the famous door and giving Maidstone’s book to our government.
Thank you to everyone who signed the pledge book and to those who contributed to The Knife Angel while we were hosting.
Aspart of OneMaidstone BID’s ‘Maintain’ work, this March we were happy to facilitate another deep clean on the streets on Maidstone. The latest location for our ‘deep clean’ programme was Bank Street.

Let me introduce myself, I’m James Marsh, the proud owner of Blackwell Jewellers. I have been in the jewellery business for over 30 years and I have finally opened my third shop in the lovely town of Maidstone. And to celebrate our grand opening, we are offering you an unbeatable deal. Yes, that’s right, 30% off all jewellery repairs and a FREE Silver gift - no strings attached.
Now, I know what you’re thinking, “Why should I trust this guy?” But first a quick story..
Picture this: 1990, the days when the world was untouched by the internet and mobile phones. I dove headfirst into a jewellery apprenticeship under a boss who could’ve won “Britain’s Grumpiest Boss” award. But, like the diamonds I was learning to craft, I thrived under pressure and dreamed of owning my own sparkling shop.
Ten years of learning and grit later, I took a leap of faith and set up my own workshop. Oh, the lessons life threw at me! But, as they say, “When the going gets tough, the tough start making jewellery.”
Three years of burning the midnight oil later, I had saved enough to open my first store in Gravesend. Sure, it wasn’t the best location, I couldn’t afford A1 location, but Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither was my jewellery empire.
Are you tired of the same old boring jewellery stores? Does your jewellery need some T.L.C? Well, look no further than Blackwell Jewellers! Get your
Fast forward another three years, and there I was, proudly opening my store on the main High Street. But I didn’t stop there, oh no. I kept pushing forward like a relentless jeweller’s hammer, and in 2014, I added another gem to my crown: a store in Bexleyheath.Along the way, I forged a great team who shared my passion for creating beautiful things.Together, we conquered Maidstone with our third store.
So, there’s my 30-year journey condensed into a bite-sized tale. But rest assured, the sparkle is far from over. My Maidstone store and I are ready to dazzle you with the wisdom and craftsmanship I’ve gained through the years. Are you ready for your next treasure? And if you have some old jewellery lying around that you no longer wear, why not sell it to us? We will pay over the odds because selling second-hand jewellery is our bread and butter. Plus, if you’re ever in a financial bind, we also offer a Pawnbroking service.
But enough about us, let’s talk about you.You deserve to treat yourself to some beautiful jewellery, and we want to make it as easy and affordable as possible. Just bring this advert with you when you visit us in Maidstone, and we will give you 30% off any repair. And don’t forget to scan the FREE gift code for a little something extra.
So what are you waiting for? Hurry down to Blackwell Jewellers and add some sparkle to your life. And if that’s not enough, we’ll even put the kettle on for you.
Thank you for your time and see you soon at Blackwell Jewellers.
