From the Chief Executive Officer Dear friends, I know why you are here tonight.

You are here because you want to be part of a powerful movement that brings justice to life.

I’m with you! That is why I am here, too.

You and I know that there are too many Californians facing pressing legal problems. Veterans, children, families, and seniors experiencing these problems don’t necessarily call them legal issues. They just know that they have a housing problem, when they are living with terrible mold, raw sewage, and appliances that don’t work. They just know that they are living in fear of a violent abuser.

They just know that they are scared to apply for the immigration relief they need.

We know that they need a lawyer. And tragically, we also know that our system will probably fail them.

OneJustice supports a network of over 100 legal aid nonprofits around our state.

Despite our hard work and best efforts, the statewide legal services system can only serve one-third of the Californians who need help. Sadly, too many are suffering – needlessly – from legal problems that are often quite simple and completely solvable. And the situation is even worse in rural and isolated communities that often don’t have any access to legal aid at all.

No help. No hope. No justice. But we can do better.

Cooley LLP has challenged us all to raise $40,000 tonight to bring life-changing legal help to four counties with incredible legal needs and limited on-the-ground resources. Every dollar raised during our Rural Justice Challenge this evening will bring life-changing legal services to residents of San Joaquin, Solano, Tulare, and Butte Counties over the next year.

You can bring help, hope and justice to those in need.

And that is ultimately why we are here tonight. So raise your hand during this evening’s Rural Justice Challenge. Your donation will make all the difference for those in need.

From the Board Chair Dear friends, Thank you for joining the OneJustice network at our annual Opening Doors to Justice awards reception. Tonight, we gather to celebrate the work of two exceptional leaders in our sector: Suk Lee and Chris Schneider. Both of our honorees this evening have made significant contributions to California’s legal services and pro bono delivery systems, and we are delighted to have the opportunity to recognize their accomplishments.

We are so pleased to honor Suk Lee for his commitment to pro bono in his role as Senior Counsel at Electronic Arts Inc. (EA), and also as the Co-Chair of the Bay Area Pro Bono Committee of the Association of Corporate Counsel (ACC). Suk leads the ACC’s Pro Bono Committee in encouraging its members to engage in pro bono activities by identifying, promoting, partnering, and facilitating pro bono opportunities for inhouse counsel. Suk has also spearheaded EA’s pro bono participation in OneJustice’s Justice Bus Project, which brings mobile legal help to rural and isolated areas of the state – thank you, Suk! Chris Schneider has devoted his entire legal career to advocating for rural communities in the Central Valley. For the past 22 years, Chris served as the executive director of Central California Legal Services, Inc. (CCLS) until his recent retirement in 2015. A recipient of the State Bar of California’s Loren Miller Legal Services Award and a graduate of OneJustice’s Executive Fellowship Program, Chris truly exemplifies what it means to be a champion of justice.

Congratulations to our two honorees, and thank you for being a part of this evening’s celebration. I am both humbled by and grateful for all of you who are here tonight. I know you are here because you also care deeply about bringing help, hope, and justice to Californians in need, and we cannot be more thankful to have you in our network.

Suk Lee Electronic Arts Inc. Suk Lee is Senior Counsel, North America Products and Publishing, at Electronic Arts Inc. (EA), a leading global interactive entertainment software company, where he serves as business counsel for several of EA’s popular sports games. Suk likes to think of his role as being in the business of “fun.” Suk started his legal career as a patent attorney at Blakely Sokoloff Taylor & Zafman LLP, then he moved in-house to Accuray Incorporated, serving as IP Counsel.

Suk’s pro bono service has been focused on rallying and mobilizing the in-house community.

Since 2013, Suk has been serving as co-chair of the Pro Bono Committee for the San Francisco Bay Area Chapter of Association of Corporate Counsel, which provides events and resources for the in-house legal community throughout the greater Bay Area. ACC-SFBA, in partnership with Bay Area law firms and nonprofit social service groups, organize at least 4 pro bono clinics per year. Suk also co-chairs the pro bono working group at EA, which participates in a variety of pro bono projects, including OneJustice’s Justice Bus Project.

Suk earned his B.S. from Stanford University and received his J.D. from Santa Clara University School of Law. Suk is also a registered with the United States Patent and Trademark Office. He lives in San Carlos with his wife and two kids (nine and six).

OneJustice is incredibly honored to have such a committed pro bono partner in Suk. Suk’s personal dedication to access to justice is truly inspiring. With Suk’s leadership, EA has now participated in three Justice Bus trips since 2015, bringing vital legal help to individuals and communities in need.

Chris Schneider Fresno Attorney Chris Schneider served as the Executive Director of Central California Legal Services (CCLS) headquartered in Fresno (with offices in Visalia and Merced) from May 1993 through November 2015. From 1996-1997, Chris oversaw the merger of CCLS and Tulare/ Kings Legal Services. Prior to his role at CCLS, Chris served two years as Directing Attorney of the California Rural Legal Assistance Delano office and two years as a staff attorney in the Madera office of CRLA. Immediately before his legal aid career, Chris worked with the law firm of Lyons, Eggers, Beer, Macri-Ortiz, Schneider, Dunphy & Camacho, d/b/a Farm Worker Law. The firm was formed by members of the United Farm Workers of America, AFL-CIO (UFW) Legal Department to provide legal assistance to the UFW and related entities as well as individual farm workers.

From 1973 through 1988, Chris worked in various capacities with the UFW including boycott organizer, administrative assistant to UFW President Cesar Chavez, contract administrator, paralegal, and attorney. Chris was admitted to practice law in 1986 after having completed a legal apprenticeship program conducted by the UFW Legal Department.

Chris has been active in legal aid issues on a statewide basis through the Legal Aid Association of California and the California Project Directors Association, the Health Consumer Alliance, and the Bench Bar Coalition. Chris is married to Magdalen Beltran Schneider and has one adult son, two adult daughters and a young daughter who is a senior in high school.

As an alumnus of OneJustice’s Executive Fellowship program, Chris has dedicated his entire career to advocating for and serving California’s most vulnerable communities.

His unwavering commitment to justice and extraordinary leadership empowered CCLS to prosper and thrive.
