Chicago reFramed Artist-centric residential building with living spaces, studios, and public exhibition areas 319 Lower North Water St.

This studio explores the design of a new 20 story tower along the banks of Chicago River sited amongst many other towers. While one of the historic impacts of Chicago on the tower typology was the frame, as defined by Colin Rowe, the studio will reconsider the inviolability of a repetitive structural pattern in favor of strategically breaking the frame at key moments. The challenge of the design problem is to manage multiple conditions including a transformation of the urban dynamics, the invention of a creative vision of Chicago’s skyline, and a series of interior communal spaces. The project will engage in a critical conversation on the civic dimension of the site and within architectural discourse.

The new tower emerges as the catalyst for blending private and public realms into the deterritorialization of restricted urban life.

319 Lower North Water St., which is the existing NBC Tower South Parking lot. The site is bound by the Chicago River on the south side, N. Columbus Drive on the east side, the NBC tower on the north side and the Cityfront Plaza on the west side. The new tower will emerge from the existing contextual influence of view corridors, daylight, wind flow, pedestrian access, car access, boat access and other dynamic political forces that embrace the site conditions of Chicago.

Massing model study where organge signifies public space. The idea to to have open floor exhibition spaces and an interactive base for the public. The trapezoidal pieces on the sides have light go through them. The pieces on tbe base are pathways to the inside.

The blue strips would create spaces that people can interact with, whether it be lounge seats to potential pathways. The yellow pieces begins the blue strips’ paths at the cornered edge and ends them when the strips interact with another yellow piece.

Final massing incorporated with the site.

The interior follows the same geometric characteristics as the facade. The large atrium exhibition spaces offer more verticality to artwork. The blue strips from the facade also transform to walkways for people to explore these large atriums to view artwork in a different perspective.

The curved shape of the building offers large outdoor balcony spaces for people to view art and the city. The yellow oval pieces are used at spaces that extrude out of the building for residential purposes or public use in the form of shops, exhibitions or resturaunts/cafes.

The base consists of small modular structures that have grass patches for people to rest in and view exterior sculpture art. Some of thes structures offer ampitheater spaces for performance art. The inside of these modules are shops for local artists to sell and expose their work.

The gate at the base are sourced from the facade which divides the busy public scenary to a more closed and quiet park. The gate above divides the roof to public and residential sections.

Biodiversity and Technology Biodiversity Research Center: Reptiles and Amphibians St. Louis, MO 63110

In this studio, our primary focus revolves around the intricate relationship between biodiversity and technology. We explore the dynamic interplay between these two seemingly contrasting forces, delving into the ways in which technology can both deplete and enhance biodiversity. Through our architectural endeavors, we seek to unravel the complex narrative that unfolds when human innovation intersects with the natural world. This project showcases our commitment to understanding and harnessing the potential of technology to not only mitigate its negative impact on biodiversity but also leverage it as a tool to promote ecological richness. Through innovative design solutions, we aim to strike a harmonious balance, ensuring that the built environment not only coexists with but actively contributes to the preservation and enhancement of our planet’s precious biodiversity.that embrace the site conditions of Chicago.

Nestled in the heart of St. Louis, Missouri, the Jewelbox is situated at the intersection of elegance and innovation. Enveloped by the city’s vibrant energy, this architectural gem graces the urban landscape, bordered by bustling streets and iconic landmarks. The site is north of the Jewel Box having the entrance face the Northeast so the pond in the Southwest can be both equally shaded and bright. Ponds would be made surrounding the site to research reptiles and amphibians in an natural habitat while the controlled one is next to the research center.

A concrete pavillion surrounds the building for giving the public an outdoor meeting place in the front. The back with the pond has the floor with grass.

Casting Containers An artist residence for living, making, and exhibiting art 2104 Cherokee St St. Louis, Missouri

Delving into the rich history of the private home as both subject and object of artistic exploration, we draw inspiration from groundbreaking projects like Rachel Whiteread’s “House” and Gordon Matta’s “Clark’s Building Cuts.” Our journey focuses on conceptualizing and designing an artist’s studio, residence, and gallery, challenging traditional notions of interior and exterior spaces. Using cast modules as foundational building blocks, our approach centers on dichotomies like inside versus outside and public versus private. Our exploration navigates blurred boundaries between living, working, exhibiting, and storage. Embracing innovation, we challenge conventional display and storage methods, forging fresh connections between programmatic and formal elements. Our ambitious objective is to create holistic environments, considering interiors and exteriors as realms for living, crafting, and exhibiting. Through inventive arrangements, multi-height spaces, and diverse material palettes, we aim to blur the boundaries between art, architecture, and functionality, paving the way for visionary design solutions that defy the status quo.

Cherokee Street in St. Louis features a diverse architectural mix, combining historic redbrick storefronts with various styles like Italianate and Romanesque Revival. The street is known for its eclectic atmosphere, adorned with colorful murals that add a modern touch to the historic charm. The artist client is Enresto Neto, Because of his large scale yarn work, a massive exhibition space would benefit his projects. A variety of shaped spaces would also help him experiment with work that encourages public interactivity.

Design to Thrive in a World Affected by Climate Change Bivuac Shelter Futuristic Submerged NYC

This freshman studio focuses on the experimentation of design that bridges the body and the world. The studio focuses on drawing and observing the world and creating narrative drawings that work as foundational design proposals. The overall theme is to design gadgets and structures with the goal of surviving in a world affected by severe climate change. The class begins with reading a short story/text from a book that describes a world with a hazardous climate. We are then tasked to create line drawings and photo montages to represent the world that was described in the text. The next project then asks us to create a piece of clothing that can aid in navigating the land. Finally, the studio ends with creating a bivouac shelter in the landscape of the story.

For the final project, I had to create a bivouac shelter based off of a series of previous deisgn pojects. For the landscape, I took a more conceptual approach to designing it by mimicking the submerged skyscrapers with tall natural pillars. I still followed the grid system of Manhattan by placing naturally shaped holes in a similar pattern. For the Bivouac, I had the shelter be separated into different structures that extend across the landscape with bridges. The structures are elevated to prevent the rising sea levels.

Personal Projects Arch Engage This is a design and build club I am part of where we take on different types of on and off campus service projects. These projects consist of either art or architectural design.

Year End Show 2023 Design Competition This design competition is held by the school every year where applicants are given the opportunity to design an exhibition space for graduating students. The space would be used to celebrate students’ works they have made throughout their years in the school.

Arch Engage: Burning Kumquat Greenhouse This project was requested by the WashU campus community garden organization, Burning Kumquat. A team of 15 students organized, designed, and built this for the students to use during the winter. Below is the construction process.

We wanted to provide as much leg space for people in wheelchairs or casts.

Year End Show 2023 Competition A peer and I created a space with the idea of a “Ritual of Exploration” that encourages people to explore. Instead of creating traditional cluttered walls, we designed hanging panels for the space to feel open and elegant. This would also make people curious to see the other side of these panels.

Colour + Color While working with a freelance interior designer, I designed interior elevation drawings while also editing floor plans. I mocked up and designed interior spaces within residential and public projects. I also used 3D modeling for diagrams and photoshop for displaying paint options.
