Cooler autumn weather leads us into the school holidays, Easter celebrations and the gateway to another exciting month in Onehunga. The team at the centre are starting to plan for the ‘Common Ground’ celebration during youth week, which takes place between 19 and 27 May 2012. We are also pleased to be supporting the Onehunga Library team as they plan exciting, youthful activities during music month through May. The Onehunga Community Centre provides many opportunities for people to shine. Our place is all about people, place, participation. If you have not accessed our term calendar, pop in to the office and pick up a copy or visit our website www.onehungacentre.org.nz to see all of the great activities that the Centre has to offer. To encourage greater respect and understanding of all cultures, especially our Maori culture, planning is also underway for Matariki@Onehunga Festival 2012. Matariki is the Maori New Year, when the star cluster called "The Pleiades" rises in the north-east in the evening twilight. Like Easter, the precise date depends on the moon. This year we celebrate Matariki between 26 June to 26 July. Come and enjoy the many activities that this wonderful community centre complex and Library bring to you. We welcome your ideas and feedback so come and share. Jenny McKay, Manager Onehunga Community Centre

‘Mana Onehunga’

An intergenerational art project In the spirit of ‘Whanaungatanga’, artists Helen Satele and Desiree Alexandre are delighted once again to be part of the Mana Onehunga project involving local and community groups. Helen and Desiree have been busy planning for the third instalment of the Onehunga Community Centre’s five intergenerational art project 'Mana Onehunga'. Like the previous murals, 'Kotahitanga' (unity, inclusiveness) which has the koru symbol, and the heart symbol for 'Manaakitanga' (caring, appreciation), another symbol reflecting Whanaungatanga (relationship building, connecting) is to be incorporated into the third mural during the Matariki Festival in June and culminating in its presentation at the ‘Through our eyes’ Matariki Art Exhibition, 16-20 July.
