Car theft in Onehunga car parks Constable Don Allan has alerted us to the fact that there has been a group of youths breaking into cars in car parks in Onehunga and stealing them. If you do see anything suspicious, please contact Satia immediately on 02 0401 13040.

Private Rubbish Bins If you do pay for an industrial size rubbish bin outside your property, please be considerate to your neighbours and have the bin emptied on a regular basis. Bins that are overflowing attract rodents, smell and are an eyesore in our streets — not a good look for visitors. Thanks for your cooperation.

Illegal Rubbish Dumping If you witness anyone dumping rubbish illegally or see large items that have been dumped, please call the office on 636 8535. We have had a number of couches and other furniture dumped in carparks and at the back of businesses.

Free Graffiti Services for OBA members Please call us on 636 8535, if you spot graffiti anywhere in the OBA district so that we can get rid of it as quickly as possible with Graffiti-Guard.

Window Etching Several businesses have had their windows etched which is a significant cost to repair. As an insufficient number of retailer members were interested in this service at the time, the extra graffiti cover was not added to Graffiti-Guard‟s contract. However, one company that provides an etching removal service is GSL GlassGuard — contact Therese Kilpatrick on 027 533 7382.

Welcome to 2013! After a short break, it‟s great to be back in Onehunga. After time away, you really notice the great vibe we‟ve got going on in Onehunga — how vibrant and unique Onehunga is and the great contribution the business community make to the district.

We understand that business continues to be tough but we want you to know that we are here to support your efforts to achieve business success. Whether it is acting as an advocate to local government; putting on events; providing a security and graffiti removal service or connecting with the community — these are just some of the things we do to make Onehunga a desirable shopping destination and one that people come back to.

Over the next week, former OBA committee member and previous owner of Jukes Café, Denise Jukes, will be coming around to hear how things are going for you — please take time to make comments and raise any issues.

We‟ve got some fantastic events coming up, including the Lunar New Year celebrations and a CEO breakfast — great opportunities to get involved in the community and find out more about the business outlook for 2013.

Onehunga Foreshore Restoration and Bay Festival Bay Festival to be delayed until foreshore completed

In conjunction with a representative of the local board, we have decided that we will not be delivering the Bay Festival until the foreshore is available again. We do not want to compromise the integrity of the event by holding it at an alternative venue so will wait until the foreshore is back in action.

On 17 January, Fulton Hogan‟s contractor‟s Smith & Davies commenced the construction of bunds as the first stage of the restoration of Onehunga Bay. This is the first stages to turn the compromised shoreline into a quality environment which will provide a major recreational benefit to the wider Auckland population. This could not have happened without the support of NZTA and Auckland Council.

Onehunga Business Association invites members to the second in our CEO Breakfast Series. Phil O‟Reilly, Chief Executive of BusinessNZ, will share with us the outlook for business in 2013.

BusinessNZ is New Zealand‟s largest business advocacy group, representing thousands of businesses of all sizes.

Lunar New Year Celebration What’s Happening in Onehunga

There will be a range of exciting activities and celebrations as part of the Lunar New Year in Onehunga. From Friday 1 February to Sunday 17 February, kids will have the chance to become a „Zodiac Explorer‟ and find 6 of the 12 Chinese zodiac signs in shops on Onehunga Mall.

All completed entries will be in to win $500, drawn at our offices at 1.00pm on Tuesday 19 February.

Phil works with companies, organisations and political and other decision makers, advocating for New Zealand‟s success through sustainable economic growth. He is a member of the Board of the Business and Industry Advisory Committee to the OECD and is New Zealand‟s employer delegate to the International Labour Conference.

We will be offering shops the chance to participate in the promotion from Monday 21 January.

Participating shops will have a Chinese lantern, poster, entry forms and an entry box for this promotion.

We hope you‟ll be able to join us for a cooked breakfast, and hear first hand the outlook for business in 2013.

Saturday 16 February will be a day of celebrations for our Chinese community. Onehunga Library is holding a Lunar New Year story time at 10.30am followed by entertainment until 1.30pm including traditional performances.

Orpheus 150th Anniversary Commemoration New Zealand’s worst maritime tragedy

There will also be games and crafts for kids in the grounds of St. Peter‟s Church from 11.00am.

At 1.30pm, you can experience the spectacular sight of a Lion Dance on Onehunga Mall, as the lion blesses businesses for the Year of the Snake.

We will also be delivering lucky „red packets‟ in the weeks leading up to Saturday 16 February. Shops who want to be blessed by the lion should place a donation in their red packet and tape it above their doorway from 1.30pm — just before the lion dancers come around.

We will also bring additional envelopes on the day just before the Lion Dance.

Along with other communities around the Manukau Harbour, Onehunga is commemorating the 150th anniversary of the Orpheus disaster.

Orpheus was wrecked off the coast of the Manukau Harbour on 7th February 1863. Out of 259 crew on board, 189 died in the disaster. It was, and still is, New Zealand‟s worst maritime tragedy.

A church service will be held at St. Peter‟s Church, 184 Onehunga Mall on Thursday 7 February 2013 at 11.00am (St. Peter‟s Church graveyard is where the Chaplain from the Orpheus is buried.)

There will also be an Orpheus Exhibition at the Onehunga Community Centre & Library, from Friday 1 February to Sunday 10 February.

Featuring maritime exhibits, Orpheus books, artwork from local children and historic images, the display is a fascinating glimpse into 1860s New Zealand and the historical context of the disaster.

The Library will also have a maritime-themed story time for children on Saturday 9th February at 10.30am.

Onehunga Night Market Wants Local Businesses Market due to start in 2013

Following on from the success of the Westfield Pakuranga and Glenfield markets, a night market will be held at the Dressmart Onehunga on Thursdays. The market was due to open on Thursday 24 January but due to compliance issues, the opening date has been postponed until these issues have been rectified.

The man behind the markets, Paul De Jonge, says the Thursday events will be low key, family friendly and refined. Paul has had a lot of interest from businesses wishing to be stallholders but wants to give priority to local businesses.

“I see the markets in Onehunga as being more exclusive and trendy as they will be smaller than the other markets in Pakuranga and Glenfield,” Paul adds.

Onehunga Business Association Town Manager, Amanda Kinzett, had a positive meeting with Auckland Council last week to express her concerns relating to the street signage for businesses. “ I felt we had a positive response to our issues and shortly we will hear the outcome of this discussion — watch this space,” Amanda says. “ Until then, keep to what the OBA negotiated with Auckland Council : up to the end of January, businesses are allowed one sandwich board per business and 60cm for product displays on the street.”

Samoa Red Cross Requires Relief Supplies Help out the TC Evans Recovery Operation

The Samoa Red Cross are collecting vital supplies to support ongoing relief distributions for the TC Evans Recovery Operation.

The following items would be much appreciated:  Blankets  For hygiene kit — Hand sanitisers, soaps, tissue paper, toilet paper, combs, hand towels etc  Mosquito nets, tarpaulins, collapsible water containers (10L and 20 L)  Bottled water  For shelter tool kit—Draw hammer, axe, hand saw, box of 4” nails, 10M rope, machete, tin cutter, 5M tie wire, shovel  For kitchen set — cooking pot, 6 plastic plates, 6 plastic cups, 6 sets of plastic utensils For further information and delivery details please urgently contact.
