Past, present, brighter future
In 2025, Griffith University celebrates 50 years of delivering a transformative education to students from around the world.
Half a century on from our origin as a single campus of 451 students, much looks different about our university. But despite the new campuses, new buildings and new ideas we’ve developed over the years, our defining, progressive spirit remains.
We know what Griffith looks like now isn’t what we’ll look like in five, 10 or even another 50 years’ time, because we’ve been evolving since the very start. And all these years, our students, staff, partners and communities have been changing and growing right alongside us.

That’s why it’s important for us to celebrate just how far we’ve come these past five decades—to honour all that Griffith is, was and is yet to be.
Throughout our expansion across South East Queensland to our new chapter in Brisbane’s heart and beyond, we’ve meant a lot of different things to a lot of different people over the years. But one thing remains our proudest constant: we’ll always be a university fundamentally committed to creating a brighter future for all.

WHERE TO LIVE
Whether you would like to live on campus or off campus, there are several options you can explore to find housing to suit your needs. Options include homestay, which allows you to experience life with a local family while you study.
Temporary and short-stay accommodation
If you are intending to organise long-term off-campus accommodation once you arrive in Queensland, it is important that you also find temporary accommodation for your first few days or weeks in the state. This will give you time to inspect your long-term off-campus accommodation before you move in. There are short-term accommodation options located near each of our campuses that are easily accessible by public transport.
Off campus
Share house
In Australia, share housing—where you share a house or apartment with a number of other students—is the most common form of off-campus accommodation.
When looking for suitable off-campus accommodation, you will need to consider:
• the cost of rent (usually advertised as a weekly amount) if utilities are included in your rent (electricity, water, gas)
• if internet is included in your rent if the accommodation is furnished
• how close the accommodation is to your campus access to public transport.
Off-campus student accommodation
There are a number of purpose-built student accommodation providers. You should review their offerings in relation to your needs and contact them directly for more information.
Brisbane: Genesis 1; Scape; Student One; UniLodge Park Central; Uniresort; Iglu.
Gold Coast: University Village; Metro on Central; University Square.

Homestay accommodation
Homestay accommodation gives you the opportunity to live with an Australian family while you study. It is a great way to develop your English language skills and experience life in Australia, and offers catered and self-catered options. Homestay is available to students at all Griffith campuses. Some homestay providers offer independent living options such as a granny flat.
Additional resources
You can find additional resources for accommodation options on the Gold Coast on the Study Gold Coast website at studygoldcoast.org.au/live/student-accommodation/
On campus
Griffith offers self-catered accommodation at Brisbane South (Nathan) campus and partners with Campus Living Villages to provide self-catered, on-campus accommodation in the Griffith University Village on the Gold Coast campus.
Living on campus is a fantastic way to meet new people, find out about new cultures and develop independence. On-campus accommodation is fully furnished and provides access to cooking facilities, laundry facilities, common rooms and internet, as well as offering a vibrant social life.
Airport pickup
International students commencing at Griffith University can apply for a free airport pickup, which takes you from the airport directly to your pre-arranged accommodation. The service is free for eligible new international students arriving at the Brisbane or Gold Coast airports. griffith.edu.au/airport-reception

How to apply
1 CHOOSE YOUR PREFERRED RESEARCH DEGREE AND CHECK ENTRY REQUIREMENTS.
If you don’t meet the direct entry requirements for a research degree, you may consider a Graduate Diploma of Research Studies or provide other evidence of your research experience, which provides an alternate pathway into such programs.
2 FIND AND CONNECT WITH A RESEARCH SUPERVISOR OR PROJECT.
Depending on your area of study and research, you may be starting at the very beginning with a unique proposal or you may be able to join an established research project.
If considering your own proposal, you are best to first identify a potential supervisor who works in your area of interest through the Griffith Experts database. Once found, you will need to contact them directly via email to discuss your research proposal.
Discover our academic and research experts now: experts.griffith.edu.au
Griffith also has a number of established research projects, to which you can apply directly. These are available particularly in areas of science and health research.
Explore our projects now: griffith.edu.au/research-study/find-supervisor-project
3 DEVELOP YOUR RESEARCH PROPOSAL.
Your research question will provide the key research focus for the full duration of your degree, so it is important that you consult a wide variety of resources and select a topic you feel highly motivated to investigate.
Narrow your focus to a single research topic. Once you have connected with your prospective supervisor, it is important that you seek their input and advice on your research proposal. If you are joining an established research project, your prospective supervisor will assist you to prepare your research proposal.
4 CONSIDER THE COST OF STUDY AND SEARCH FOR FUNDING OPTIONS.
This could include scholarships or sponsorships. You may also seek a connection with an industry partner to collaborate on your proposed research project.
5 GATHER REQUIRED DOCUMENTS.
Ensure you have all the documents you need , including a CV that uses our CV template—find this template and our application checklist at our website listed below.

“At Griffith, I felt really seen by my tutors—they saw a strength in me and a power for storytelling and gave me opportunities and challenges to step into.”
Landing the lead role of Eliza in the multi-award-winning musical Hamilton (2024, Sydney Lyric Theatre) was nothing short of a dream come true for musical theatre alumnus Vidya Makan.
“I feel like it’s the peak of my career … it’s definitely a really, really special moment in time for me,” she said.
Vidya’s love for music started early, with her parents often taking her to see musicals. She soon became an avid pianist and cellist and found her true passion in her high school production of My Fair Lady
“Studying musical theatre at Griffith helped me see my own potential and really set me up to work in this industry,” she says.
Ms Makan also recently had her composer/lyricist debut, writing a show called The Lucky Country —a musical that delves deep into the themes of identity and belonging, exploring what it means to be Australian.
