Fees, scholarships and financial assistance
Course fees
Most domestic undergraduate students are enrolled in a Commonwealth supported place (CSP), which is subsidised by the Australian Government. A CSP is a place at university where the Australian Government pays part of your fees and you pay the remainder through a student contribution payment. Eligibility conditions apply.
To be eligible for a CSP, you must meet the citizenship and eligibility requirements. Visit our Commonwealth supported places webpage for more information.
deakin.au/csp-fee-paying
Different courses have different fees which are subject to change each year. The Australian Government sets the student contribution amounts for CSPs based on which study discipline the unit relates to. You can find the study disciplines in the table below or by looking up the course you’d like to study on our website.
deakin.au/undergraduate-courses
HECS-HELP
HECS-HELP is an Australian Government loan that covers the student contribution of your tuition fees if you have a CSP and meet the eligibility requirements. You repay your loan through the tax system when you start earning an income over the HELP repayment threshold. Payment of the student contribution amount for your course fees can be deferred through HECS-HELP for eligible students. To view more information and check your eligibility, visit our HECS-HELP page online. deakin.au/-hecs-help
Study-related costs
There may be a number of costs other than tuition fees that you need to factor in, such as living and transport costs as well as course-related expenses, including computer equipment, text books, and special equipment or clothing (if relevant to your course).
Scholarships
A Deakin scholarship is not simply a financial boost, but our chance to acknowledge and reward your accomplishments and hard work. Some scholarships are based on academic merit, community contribution, access and equity, regional and rural, indigenous Australian descent, extracurricular achievement, or perseverance and achievement despite hardship. Use our online search tool to explore all our scholarships and submit one application to be considered for scholarships that you are eligible for.

Key terms
ATAR and lowest selection rank
The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is a number between 00.00 and 99.95 that indicates your rank relative to all students in your age group (i.e. students aged 16 to 20 years), not your Year 12 group. As per Australian Government guidelines, the ATAR published in this guide is the lowest ‘adjusted selection rank’ for which an offer was made in 2025 at the time of publication of this guide. The ‘selection rank and its corresponding ATAR’ is an applicant’s ATAR, plus any adjustments applied.
Deakin Guaranteed ATAR
The Deakin Guaranteed ATAR provides the opportunity for eligible Australian Year 12 students who are from an under-represented cohort to secure a place at Deakin with a lower ATAR.
Selection rank
The selection rank considers your ATAR or equivalent rank plus any adjustment factors you’re eligible for. Where an ATAR is ‘NP’, it means the ATAR was not published. deakin.edu.au/find-a-course-by-atar
Major
A group of six or eight related units in a particular study area or academic discipline.
Minor
A group of related units in an area of study or academic discipline. Minors are shorter than majors and are usually four units long.

Medicine
Top 250 for clinical and health subjects1
OVERVIEW CAREERS
Doctor of Medicine H911
Apply to the Doctor of Medicine and set yourself up for a range of rewarding careers, from general practice to pathology, paediatrics to surgery. The course has a unique focus on rural and regional medicine, Indigenous health and patient-centred communication skills.
Not only do our students develop the foundational skills essential to a career in medicine, but they are also given the opportunity to explore multiple specialist areas. Our Doctor of Medicine has an emphasis on rural and regional medicine and aims to satisfy the critical shortage of doctors in regional areas, which makes graduates highly employable.
Start your journey with foundations of medicine, encompassing medical sciences, clinical capabilities, public health, medical ethics and law, and Indigenous health. You’ll learn to solve the kinds of problems you’ll face in your future career in a supportive environment. You’ll also develop your confidence in foundational clinical skills, clinical reasoning and the high-level human capabilities necessary for excellent person-centred care.
In third and fourth year, you’ll be immersed in the clinical environment at clinical schools in Ballarat, Geelong, Melbourne, Warrnambool and/or the Rural Community Clinical School, where you’ll complete programs that span from general medicine and surgery to specialised programs. deakin.edu.au/med-clinical-schools
You will also spend time in third year following patients as they transition between hospital and community care, gaining a broader appreciation of the healthcare system and the patients’ healthcare journeys.
Across third and fourth year, you’ll complete the Research Scholar Program, gaining foundational skills in analysing evidence and designing research programs that are important for future careers in medicine.
You will be provided extensive opportunities for feedback on your progress, with a program of assessment and self-evaluation that occurs in the clinical workplace. There is also the opportunity to complete a rotation of your third-year studies in the Northern Territory, to gain a greater understanding of rural and remote medicine and Indigenous health.
The course concludes in year four with a pre-internship hospital rotation in which you’ll experience the day-to-day life of an intern. deakin.edu.au/course/H9112

Adjustments
Adjustments applied via educational access schemes don’t change the ATAR, they change an applicant’s selection rank for a course that the applicant has listed as a preference. This results in the applicant moving up the course selection list. It also means that an applicant’s selection rank can be different for each course listed in their course preference list. If the applicant is allocated sufficient adjustments, the applicant might receive an offer for a course even though their ATAR is below the published lowest selection rank. delta.vtac.edu.au/coursesearchtools/ bonuscalc.htm
Associate degree
An associate degree provides flexible pathways into tertiary education and can be used as a guaranteed pathway into a range of targeted degrees at Deakin. Completion of an associate degree may give you up to 18 months’ credit towards one of these target degrees. deakin.edu.au/associate-degrees
Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR)
The ATAR is a rank from 0 to 99.95. It indicates a student’s performance in relation to other students.
The ATAR is calculated by using an aggregate produced by adding:
• scaled study score in English, English Language, Literature, or English as an Additional Language (EAL)
• the best three VTAC scaled study scores, and • 10% of the fifth and sixth study scores that are available.
Bachelor degree
Usually three or more years of full-time study or equivalent part time. In some courses, you may choose one or more majors in specialised areas. It is the minimum tertiary requirement for many professional careers.
Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP)
A university place for which the Australian Government pays part of your tuition fees.
Credit point
For each subject you successfully complete, you will receive the credit point value of that subject towards your studies. You must complete a specified number of credit points to obtain your degree. The number of credit points required varies for each course and is outlined online. deakin.edu.au/courses
DeakinSync
DeakinSync is your personalised digital study hub, where you access your unit sites, email, calendar, enrolment details, study tools and more.
Defer
The approved postponement of study for a specified period prior to enrolment in a course. Most Deakin courses allow you to defer your studies for up to two years. deakin.edu.au/defer
Direct entry
When applications can be made directly to a higher education provider rather than through a tertiary admissions centre, like VTAC.
Double degree
A double degree, sometimes referred to as a combined degree, allows you to study two degrees at the same time e.g. Bachelor of Arts/ Bachelor of Laws. This means you graduate with two degrees in less time than it would take to complete them separately.
Entry requirements
These are requirements that you must meet, in addition to minimum tertiary entrance requirements, to qualify for entry to a course. Information about entry requirements is best accessed via individual course webpages and on the VTAC website (vtac.edu.au).
Equity and Inclusion Division
The Equity and inclusion Division is always working towards creating an environment of inclusion where we value and celebrate diversity, embrace difference and nurture a connected, safe and respectful community. We want everyone to feel a sense of belonging at Deakin.
Graduate entry
A course that requires prior completion of an undergraduate degree for entry. Deakin’s Doctor of Medicine is a graduate-entry course.
Higher Education Contribution Scheme-Higher Education Loan Program (HECS-HELP)
HECS-HELP is a government loan scheme to assist eligible CSP students with their tuition fees (student contributions). Repayments are made through the Australian taxation system once your annual income exceeds the minimum threshold for repayment.
Honours
Honours is an additional year of specialised study, usually taken after you complete a bachelor degree, or embedded as part of a bachelor degree. Honours may provide you with a competitive edge in the job market or a pathway into a higher degree by research.
Indigenous Access Scheme
The Indigenous Access Scheme is a pathway to undergraduate study that recognises the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students. By looking beyond your ATAR and academic results to consider all the skills, experience and community work that make you unique and prepare you for study, we may reward your hard work with a place at university. deakin.edu.au/ias
Level
The year level at which units in your course are studied. Level 1 is equivalent to your first year of full-time study, level 2 is equivalent to your second year of full-time study, and so on. You can usually tell what level a unit is by looking at the first number in a unit’s code.
Lowest selection rank
The minimum ATAR including adjustments that must be achieved to be considered for admission to a course.
Major
An approved group of at least six (and up to 10) credit points of related units, normally taken in sequence at each level of a course.
Minor
A minor is a group of related units in an area of study or academic discipline. Minors are shorter than majors and are usually four units long.
Glossary
Non-Year 12 applicant
There are three categories under which non-Year 12 applicants may apply to Deakin.
• Higher education study – applicants whose highest level of study enrolment since leaving secondary education is a higher education course, whether at a university or non-university provider.
• Vocational education and training (VET) study – applicants whose highest level of study enrolment since leaving secondary education is a VET course.
• Work and life experience (includes less recent secondary results) – applicants who left secondary education more than two years previously and have not undertaken VET or higher education study since then.
Offer round/s
Refers to the series of dates on which offers of higher education places are issued to applicants throughout the year, whether through a tertiary admission centre or directly by a higher education provider.
Pathway
Pathways provide alternative entry options for getting into a course at Deakin if you do not meet the requirements for entry. Pathways to Deakin courses can include options such as Deakin College, TAFE courses or starting your course at a different campus. deakin.edu.au/pathways
Personal statement
The personal statement is used in the admission process by university applicants to highlight any relevant factors or circumstances that cannot be included in the application itself. For example, motivation to study, work experience, community experience, academic performance or languages other than English. The personal statement can be accessed online once you have registered with VTAC. You can only submit one statement, so you should address all your course preferences and provide details to support your application, such as relevant work experience and your reasons for applying. It is also important that you submit the form by the specified closing date at vtac.edu.au. If a personal statement is required or will be considered, it will be listed in the VTAC course detail online. deakin.edu.au/preparing-your-application
Postgraduate degree
A course of study beyond bachelor level, including graduate certificate, graduate diploma, masters and research degree. In many cases, eligibility for entry to a postgraduate course requires you to have completed an undergraduate degree and/or have significant work experience.
Prerequisites
The VCE subjects or other requirements that applicants must complete to be eligible for selection into a course. Information about prerequisites is best accessed via individual course webpages and on the VTAC website (vtac.edu.au).
Recent secondary education applicant
Current Year 12 (2025) applicants and Year 12 graduates from 2024 and 2023.
Recognition of prior learning (RPL)
RPL is an assessment process used to evaluate a person’s prior learning and experience to determine whether credit can be granted in a course to shorten the length of the degree. There are two aspects to recognition of prior learning:
• credit may be transferred to your Deakin program from completed or partly completed studies you have undertaken at other accredited institutions; and • credit may be granted on the basis of knowledge and skills acquired through informal learning, e.g. in the workplace. deakin.edu.au/rpl
Scholarships
A scholarship offers support to help a student with their education. Deakin offers a range of scholarships for commencing students that recognise and reward many accomplishments, from leadership skills to academic success, extra-curricular achievements and commitment to study while experiencing personal hardship. deakin.edu.au/scholarships
Selection rank
The ranking that tertiary admission centres and most universities actually use to assess admission to a course. A person’s course selection rank can include their ATAR, any adjustments they are eligible for, such as equity or subject adjustments, other contributions calculated on the basis of work experience or previous non-secondary study, portfolio assessments, results of specified entrance tests, etc.
Semester
The teaching period for the Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Medical Imaging and Bachelor of Optometry.
Seminar
A class where a small group of students discusses study materials and ideas with a member of the teaching team.
Single unit (non-award) study
Single unit (non-award) study provides access to a wide variety of university-level units, without students having to study a full degree. Some units have prerequisites or special requirements but many are open to all potential students and on completion can lead to further pathway options. deakin.edu.au/single-unit
Special Entry Access Scheme (SEAS)
SEAS is an umbrella program of special entry schemes governed by VTAC, and conducted by participating tertiary institutions, including Deakin, that provides special consideration for entry into undergraduate courses. vtac.edu.au and deakin.edu.au/access-equity
Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) Multiple Choice
The STAT Multiple Choice (MC) is a test developed by the Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER) to assess an individual’s ability to analyse information and think critically. If you don’t meet the course academic entry requirements, or haven’t completed Year 12, or don’t hold any relevant qualifications, the STAT MC may be an option for you to meet course entry requirements. If you are unsure whether or not you need to sit the STAT Multiple Choice, or would like more information on non-Year 12 course entry requirements, please visit vtac.edu.au or contact Deakin.
Student contribution
In a Commonwealth Supported Place (CSP), the Australian Government pays some of your fees and you pay the rest. This is called your ‘student contribution’. If you’re enrolled in a CSP, you may be eligible for a HECS-HELP loan to cover your student contribution amount.
Glossary
Student Services and Amenities Fee
This is a fee higher education providers can charge for non-academic services and amenities, such as advocacy, sporting programs, legal advice and referral, health and welfare, and disability support.
Study score
A score of 0–50 that shows how a VCE student performed in a particular subject compared with others in the same year. It is calculated from your results in assessments and examinations in that subject.
