ONE YTH @ONEDOTYOUTH
Hey Friend,
Welcome to the One YTH Family!
We are so excited about your interest in serving students in our community at One Church. There is something special that happens when members of a community make the decision to serve and build the local church. I believe your decision in serving students will not only impact the next generation and the lives of families in our community and city for Christ, but I also believe that it will have a transformative impact on your own life and spiritual development. As you serve, be encouraged that you are fulfilling the commission that Jesus left with his followers in Matthew 28:19-20:
“Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”
As followers of Jesus, we are commissioned by Christ to love the Lord our God with all of our heart, soul, mind and strength, and also to love our neighbor as we would our self. Your willingness to serve brings glory to God and also shows the love of God to your neighbor. It is our hope that this playbook equips you with all the necessary information and guidelines to set you up for success as you grow deeper in relationship with Jesus, and with students at One YTH. Know that you are not alone, and have a team who cares deeply about you, and above all is for YOU!
Do not hesitate to reach out to any member of our team if you have ANY questions at all.
The best is yet to come!
Everyone Pulling in the Same Direction.
Alignment simply means everyone pulling in the same direction. Disunity causes confusion, wastes energy, and limits effectiveness Our goal is for ONE CHURCH to be both unified as believers and aligned with God’s purpose for our church. Different churches appeal to different people. That doesn’t mean that one is right and the other wrong, it just means that they’re different. If ONE CHURCH is not your particular flavor or style, no hard feelings, in fact we would love to help you find a church that better fits you.
Belong and Contribute.
ONE CHURCH is not a place to just sit and watch. No matter where you are on your spiritual journey we have a place for you to belong and contribute. You were crafted with a purpose. Your passions, abilities, and experiences uniquely qualify you for a specific role in the kingdom of God. When you become a part of One Church, we’ll help you find what that is. Imagine being part of a church where you can discover your calling, and be used by God to bless others. That is ONE CHURCH. Together, there is no limit to what God can do through us.
Healthy things grow, and growing things change. If you are resistant to change then ONE CHURCH is probably not the place for you. Our church will never be static, not now or 20 years from now. As culture evolves and our church grows, we may alter the methods, but we will never change the message. An openness to change is deeply ingrained in our identity and philosophy. God has called us to be a movement, not a monument.
If somebody broke into your house to steal, kill, and destroy your family, what would you do? Would you attack your brother? Of course not, you would join with your family and fight off the enemy. Why does the body of Christ waste energy competing with each other instead of working together? ONE CHURCH is all about building bridges with other believers, churches, and our community to make an eternal difference. It’s time for the body of Christ to work together.
It’s tragic that so many Christians reduce their relationships with God down to a set of mundane rituals, and unimaginative routines. The Christian life should be an exhilarating quest…a fulfilling adventure. Jesus doesn’t call you to play it safe…He calls you to live on the edge! Taking calculated, spirit-led risk is, and always will be, a part of our DNA. The God of the universe has called us to take part in His mission. We invite you to join us on the adventure of a lifetime
In Acts 1:8 as Jesus sent His disciples out to reach a disconnected culture He said, “You will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.” Jesus Himself set up a model for multiplication that we follow still today. One Church will always be a church that is focused on reproducing leaders, planting churches, and spreading the gospel. Igniting a movement happens through multiplication!
We don't just tolerate our differences, we celebrate them and fight for unity in the midst of diversity. In our world, there is so much polarization and divide Now more than ever it is critical for the body of Jesus the local church to exemplify His mission to bring together all people and celebrate the uniqueness He designed us with God calls us to come together in our diversity and build His church in His image, from every tribe, tongue and nation (Revelation 7:9).
Your Baby Is My Baby
If you have a problem, I have a problem. When you succeed, I succeed. We win and lose as a team.
See It and Say It
We don't blow smoke. We ignite fires. We are intentional with providing truly genuine and specific affirmation and encouragement. Anything less feels fake and is ineffective.
Battleship not a Cruise Ship
We're on a battleship, not a cruise ship. We're dealing with life and death. We are all fiercely committed to the mission. It's not about personal ego or ambition, it's about the mission of Christ and of One Church.
Two SuperPowers. Super Unoffendable & Super Approachable
We need the truth, for the sake of the mission. We need honest and ongoing evaluation to continue to improve, because the mission is too important!

1. WE ARE BUILT ON PRAYER. If God is not leading, there is no point. We are reliant upon the power and wisdom that comes from God through communion with Him. We look for every opportunity to pray for, and with, students. We also look to follow 1 Thessalonians 5:11 NIV and “encourage one another and build one another up” within our One YTH team as well.
2. WE WANT EVERY STUDENT TO FEEL SEEN AND KNOWN. We want to build a culture of trust and honesty. When we’re with students, we’re WITH students, they are our first priority. Any student gathering or event we have, we look to spend every moment with students. This is not the time to hang out and chat with other servant leaders, this is precious time for students.
3. WE GIVE STUDENTS OUR ABSOLUTE BEST. We don’t lower the standards because we are working with teenagers. But because of our belief in building the next generation, we look to continue to raise the bar in our culture of excellence. Practically, this means we show up on time to meetings, bring our best energy to student events, communicate in advance on availability, hold each other accountable, look to serve always, and are engaged with students first during student ministry events.
4. WE DON’T REMIND STUDENT OF THEIR YOUTH, WE REMIND THEM OF THEIR PURPOSE. 1 Timothy 4:12 NIV tells us “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young. But set an example for all believers in your speech, conduct, love, faith and purity.” The worst leader is the one that always reminds students of how young they are. We want to be leaders that call out the giftings and callings on every student’s life, and point them in the direction God is leading them. We want to leave students with more hope and encouragement than we found them with.
5. WE BUILD UP FOLLOWERS OF JESUS, NOT FOLLOWERS OF OURSELVES. We don't seek our own popularity, we want to make Jesus popular amongst students. We look for every opportunity to share the love of Jesus with students This could look like simply being a consistent presence in their lives, listening well, prayerful moments, scripture memorization, addiction accountability, speaking truth over students, and much more.
6. WE GET INTO THEIR WORLD. John 1:14 MSG tells us that “The Word became flesh and blood, and moved into the neighborhood.” We follow the way of Jesus by “moving into the neighborhood” of students' lives We seek to develop a deeper understanding of who they are, what they enjoy doing, who their family and friends are, and what they are passionate about. This means attending their extra-curricular activities, grabbing lunch/coffee, getting to know their family, and much more
Specific guardrails are in place to protect leaders and students and to promote healthy ministry. These guardrails are firmly in place and are never to be crossed at any time.
1. OPPOSITE SEX PRAYER: Male leaders should seek to minister in prayer to male students and female leaders should seek to minister in prayer to female students. Any exceptions to this must be conducted in a public setting with the partnership of another adult leader.
2. DATING/ROMANTIC RELATIONSHIPS: Guy/girl relationships (i.e. -dating or going out together on a social level) between adult leaders and students is forbidden There are no exceptions to this rule
3. TRANSPORTATION: Only screened and approved adult student ministry leaders may provide transportation for students. We strictly prohibit any leader to drive alone with a student of the opposite sex There must be at least 2 leaders/students with you as a leader in any transportation of the opposite sex. Driving alone with a student of the same sex can be allowed, but must be approved by a member of the One YTH staff. Prior permission for a leader to drive a student in any case must be requested by the student and approved by the student's parent/legal guardian and the One YTH staff.
4. SEXUAL ABUSE: Any and all allegations of sexual abuse directed toward a leader will be thoroughly investigated. Leaders must use discretion in terms of physical contact of any kind. Avoid full body hugs with students of the opposite sex.
5. STUDENT/LEADER CONFIDENTIALITY: If any student confides in a leader about any sexual or physical abuse happening directly to them, from them, or about someone else, they are required to immediately tell a member of the One YTH staff. Also, if any student confides in a leader about any suicidal ideation, they are also required to tell a member of the One YTH staff We are mandatory reporters, which means that we are not allowed to keep that specific information to ourselves, but must report it. This is in the best interest of the leader, student and the student’s family.
6. APPROPRIATE RELATIONSHIPS: There is a big difference between being a “friend” and being a “leader.” Although we believe that a part of being a leader to students does come with a certain type of mentor/friendship, it is expected that adult leaders will cultivate healthy adult relationships in addition to the relationships they have with students. It is not healthy for student ministry events to be the primary outlet for the social needs of an adult team member.
7. TWO OR MORE ADULTS AT ALL TIMES: Two or more screened youth ministry paid staff or servant leaders should be present at all times when student ministry activities are conducted. All paid staff and volunteers are strictly prohibited from having sole custody of a student. Any room doors should remain unlocked and with visibility inside at all times.
8. DISCIPLINE GUIDELINES: Never touch any student in a disrespectful manner or make derogatory remarks. Corporal punishment is never allowed at any time. The only acceptable time to physically restrain a student is when you believe a student is attempting to do bodily harm to self or another student. 1st Strike: Corrective conversation with a leader 2nd Strike: They must sit with a leader during service. 3rd Strike: Call Parent/Guardian
9. SOCIAL MEDIA: We want to make sure we are being good role models for our students Therefore, if you allow students to have access to your online presence we ask that you be judicious with what you post on any social media sites. It is also important to be aware of what other people post about you on social media sites Please use wisdom when messaging or posting on a student’s page Avoid private messaging when possible. The One YTH staff does not function as “social media police ” However, we do address anything questionable that comes to our attention on both student and leader pages.
10. DISCRIMINATORY LANGUAGE: We have a zero tolerance policy on any language, actions or communication that is discriminatory or oppressive on the basis of race, ethnicity, age, disability or sex We encourage healthy accountability amongst all leaders and students in making sure there is zero discrimination in our community, and if there is, it must be immediately reported to a member of the One YTH staff.
11. COMMUNICATION WITH STUDENTS: For your safety, and the safety of students, we ask that you would be above reproach in communication to students. This includes refraining from one-on-one text conversations, social media DM’s, or any form of virtual communication to happen with students of the opposite sex. Any text with a student of the opposite sex must be with another leader or student in a group message format. This rule applies also for in-person conversations, as a YTH leader and a student of the opposite sex are strictly prohibited to have an isolated one-on-one conversation behind closed doors, or out of the view of others. If a conversation with a student of the opposite sex is deemed necessary, we encourage you to always find one other person to join you.
As teams and individuals develop we want to make sure there is a path to continue to advance in leadership. Our desire is to see each leader take on more responsibility and continue to grow. This is not for hierarchy but instead for clarity and to offer opportunities for more and more leadership! Towards that end, here are the levels of leadership in our leadership pipeline:
The point leader is a leader that acts as the point person for the entire ministry on a specific service depending on the organization of the ministry. Supports and helps lead the Team, Group and Servant Leaders on a service.
Point leaders will commonly be a part of the Directional Leadership Team (DLT) of the ministry they are a part of.
Team Leaders will directly lead a specific team within a ministry and lead all of the servant leaders on that specific team.
This leader will work closely and report to the point leader.
Group Leaders are the official lead of a specific Group in One YTH
They may, or may not, have a co-Group leader who will assist them in leading a Group This leader directly reports to the Group Team Leader
A servant leader is anyone serving on any team within any ministry of One Church. We are all leaders and we are all servant leaders.
Our One YTH Directional Leadership Team (DLT) is comprised of a team of faithful leaders who have specific oversights over the totality of the One YTH ministry. They provide leadership and care to all servant leaders and students. They meet on a regular basis all together to pray, plan and problem solve for all things One YTH.

Connector - Your primary job is to connect with students. Our goal is that by the time students have walked in our doors to the point where they have left, they have connected with a member of our One YTH team

Planning Center - Planning Center is the system in which we know who will be at service. It’s a more formalized RSVP in the ministry world. It also shows where you are serving, service order, times of arrival and events coming up. Download the app, get familiar with it, and please help us by getting as far ahead as possible in letting us know your weekly availability through Planning Center
Mullet Nights - We call our regular One YTH Adult Team Nights “Mullet Nights” because it's always “business” in the front, “party” in the back. Cringy.. I know. But these nights are so important as we gather to plan and pray for the upcoming months and share important team updates, while also having intentional time to hang with each other on the team and have fun! These Mullet Nights happen 3x a year, and communication of these happens in our One YTH Team GroupMe and RSVP’s happen on Google Calendar. We STRONGLY encourage your attendance at these nights.
Team Hangs - In months where we aren’t having a Mullet Night, we will have a One YTH Team Hang. These nights there are no official “business”, but all “party”. Some examples of this could be a Top Golf hangout or pizza party at a team members home. The goal of these nights is solely community and to enjoy time with one another. Like Mullet Nights, the communication of these Team Hangs happens in our One YTH Team GroupMe and RSVP’s happen on Google Calendar.
GroupMe and Google Calendar - GroupMe is our main channel of team communication. We encourage you to never mute the chat, but always have an openness to reading new and important messages so you don’t miss out on what's happening. Google Calendar is the place where we send official RSVPs for our Team Hangs and Mullet Nights.
I Will be Faithfully Present – Leadership is a privilege. We “get” to do this, not we “have” to do this. But with that privilege comes responsibility. We ask that you show up when you’re scheduled to serve, that you arrive on time (on time meaning 5 minutes early), and that you over communicate whenever you’re unable to make it. Leading with integrity means “letting your yes be your yes, and your no be your no'' (Matthew 5:37).
I Will Represent Jesus and One Church Well – As a servant leader, you’re a part of something bigger than yourself. Not only are you representing One Church, you’re representing Jesus and his church. We ask that you do everything with that reality in mind. We don’t want to be overly prescriptive here, but be mindful of what you post on social media, watch what you say, and seek to be a person of character and integrity.
I Will Provide Ongoing, 360° Feedback – We need to know how we’re doing as a ministry and how you’re doing as a person. Please don’t wait until something is broken before you say something. Your insight and input matters; it makes us better and allows us to care for you as well. We won’t get it right all the time, but if you play your part we’ll try our best to play ours.
I Will Seek to Multiply Myself – Not only is multiplication a core value of ours, it’s also an essential part of what it means to be a follower of Jesus. Leaders should always seek to involve others, working yourself out of a job if you will. When you invite others to serve, you’re not just asking them to do a job; you're helping them find their people and their purpose. Always be praying about who in your social circle or Group could serve alongside you.
I Will be a Culture Carrier – The work God has given us to do is so important, which means we should do it well. Our culture is how we keep things consistent and aligned with the mission of our church. You should know our Core Values and Culture Behaviors and allow them to inform your leadership and decision making. Culture is nourished and multiplied when it’s embodied by our leaders.
I Will Lead Sacrificially – Let’s be honest; leadership isn’t always easy or glamorous. There will be many days where you don’t exactly “feel” like leading. But regardless of how you feel, what remains true is that Jesus is always worthy. David said, “I will not sacrifice to the Lord that which costs me nothing” (2 Samuel 24:24). Leadership should cost you something: your time, your talent, your resources.
I Will Choose Joy – Negativity is toxic and can kill a team. Instead of negativity, we want to choose joy and gratitude. We’re not asking you to be “fake”; we’re asking you to be positive, always believe the best, and fulfill your role with optimism. C.S. Lewis said joy is the serious business of heaven. We believe joy is the serious business of One Church as well.
