Showing that cares Welcome to Darlington One Darlington I hope you had a relaxing Christmas and are looking forward to the challenges and opportunities a new year brings.

If you are still deciding what your New Year’s resolution could be, why not think about becoming a volunteer? Dedicated volunteers are the lifeblood of many charities, clubs and other organisations.

As a volunteer myself, I was pleased to be asked to be guest editor for this edition. But what is a volunteer? A definition of a volunteer could be “a person who renders aid or performs a service without requiring anything in return”.

The truth is that, although volunteers do not require something in return, they often use the word “rewarding” when people ask them about their voluntary work. I have certainly found my activity as a Busy Reader very rewarding.

In 2014, I joined the Busy Readers project, run by Darlington Cares and attended an interesting halfday training session. After I received my Disclosure and Barring Certificate I was welcomed by Red Hall Primary School and began helping in September 2014.

Since then I have looked forward to my weekly sessions with children of varying abilities. Some struggle with reading and are very happy to receive some one-to-one help. Others just love to read to someone and discuss the content of their books, often learning something in the process.

This month, there’s the chance to nominate someone who has gone the extra mile, whether as a volunteer or otherwise, for a Best of Darlington award. See page 9 for more details.

To get started as a volunteer, you could simply contact the organisation you want to help. There’s a Volunteer Fair at the Dolphin Centre on 7 February – see the back page for details, where you can also read the inspiring stories of some of Darlington’s volunteer heroes. Talk up the town There’s lots to love in Darlo and we’re looking for people to share their love of the town.

We are looking for friendly, approachable people who can volunteer their time to help greet visitors to the town.

Working as part of a team, you will help to provide information on the attractions Darlington has to offer as well as information on what’s on in the town. Full training will be given.

If you are over 18 and willing to offer a few hours a week to help promote your town we would like to hear from you. Please email katie.greenwood@darlington.gov.uk for more details and to register your interest.

Cuppa with a copper Pop along to the Cornmill Centre atrium area and enjoy a free cuppa with a copper on Monday 14 January between 10am and noon. Age UK ambassadors will also be on hand to offer friendship and company.

Bobbies on the beat will also be there to talk about any issues you may have about local policing and it’s a great chance to meet up with others who need a bit of company and a chat. Cuppa with a Copper is in partnership with the Cornmill Centre, Age UK North Yorkshire and Darlington and the Mercure Darlington King’s Head.

Say NO to Blue Monday It’s the middle of winter, the excitement of Christmas and New Year are a distant memory – it’s no wonder then that Monday 21 January is often called Blue Monday.

Parc life – Ingenium begins Work has started on a new business park that could create more than 2,000 jobs in the coming years.

Ingenium Parc, behind Cummins, off Yarm Road, aims to attract high-quality industrial businesses to the borough to build on our growing economy.

The first phase of work on the site – which will cost £5m - has been funded by the the Tees Valley Combined Authority and the Department for Transport.

Works to be carried out as part of the first phase include highways improvements (including changes to the Yarm Road/McMullen Road roundabout – see page 30), the installation of utilities and a new access road into the site.

Keeping the development green The site has been recognised for its bio-diversity and a large amount of work has already been done to protect the wildlife in the area, particularly great crested newts.

Phil Roxby, the council’s ecology and landscape officer, says: “This site is about the balance between development and environment. To make sure both can exist side-by-side, we did nearly 12 months of thorough wildlife surveys, including specialist surveys for species including great crested newts and bats, to understand the impact of any development.

“We took a robust approach and made sure land was set aside and a high quality scheme was created for a variety of wildlife as part of the wider site masterplan.”

The project team has worked with Natural England to identify the best way to mitigate any loss of habitat. Works that took place in the autumn meant dozens of newts and other creatures were moved to a safe, specially created habitat on the edge of the site.

Once complete, the 12 hectare plot, which sits alongside the existing eight hectare Maidendale Nature Reserve, will become the town’s second largest nature reserve.

Fourteen ponds have been created, alongside species-rich grasslands.

It is also expected that, as the industrial site develops, each plot will include green landscaping to help benefit wildlife and complement the extended nature reserve.

The Friends of Crown Street Library are working with the council to gather your views and help inform the future of the library service at Crown Street and Cockerton.

Who are db symmetry?

Why did you choose this site?

We are a highly responsible developer and selective in the locations in which we choose to develop. Our decision to bring forward this site in Darlington comes at a time when there is a strong level of demand but limited availability of high-quality logistics space in the north.

We are one of the UK’s largest and most active logistics developers with a landbank of more than 3,100 acres. Nationally over 1,000 acres/15.4 million sq ft is already earmarked for logistics use and a further 2,074 acres is being promoted through the planning process for logistics use.

Before starting on site there were many months of positive working with the council and stakeholders to create a scheme that addresses the shortage of modern logistics space to support business growth and, as a result, create economic benefits to the region.

We have one of the most active speculative development programmes in the country, with eight buildings totalling over 1.2million sq ft across six sites under construction last year.

We see great potential in Symmetry Park Darlington due to its proximity to the motorway and Teesport and its employment catchment, which is shown in the major deal we secured with a multinational online retailer.

Since signing an option to exclusively promote Symmetry Park Darlington, we have secured planning consent to deliver 1.6 million sq ft of logistics accommodation. We are also progressing an application to gain consent to develop a further 550,000 sq ft to the front of the site which will include public amenities.

We are currently on site delivering a building of 1.5 million sq ft for a multinational company.

Firthmoor & District Community Association

The association provides services for the community including a nursery, youth programme, community cafĂŠ, foodbank, health and wellbeing sessions and an over-50s group. When winter bites... how Potholes can appear in road surfaces at any time of year but numbers reach their peak in late winter.

The condition of our road network is one of your top concerns, whether you’re a driver, passenger or cyclist, and our highways maintenance teams have been working hard to repair the damage from last year and carry out preventative work.

After the heavy snow and freezing temperatures we had in March last year, we repaired almost 2,500 potholes in less than two months.

And over the summer, we spent more than £1m on a programme of resurfacing and micro-surfacing more than 100 roads and residential streets to improve the borough’s road network ahead of this winter period.

A survey of the condition of the network in November saw the number of roads in need of attention drop from 22% to 16%, thanks to the summer programme of works.

The work this summer was part of a four year programme, after Cabinet agreed additional funding of £2m (£500,000 a year) – on top of existing maintenance budgets – to tackle the condition of our roads.

That work will continue this summer, with the next programme of maintenance works being put together now.

As well as the extra funding from our own resources, the council was also awarded £770,000 from the Department for Transport in November – part of a national pot of £420m – to spend on roads maintenance, pothole repairs and bridge maintenance.

A programme of micro-surfacing was carried out over the summer – a preventative measure used on roads to treat them before potholes can form.

When it melts, traffic running across the road surface impacts on the spaces left by the ice and causes it to collapse, creating a pothole.

The aim of micro-surfacing is to repair cracks and other minor defects before the road gets into a poor condition, restore grip and texture and create a more waterproof surface.

do we tackle potholes?

HOW DO WE REPAIR POTHOLES (and which ones do we repair?)

In the middle of winter, the main concern is to keep the roads as safe and driveable as possible.

There are 355 miles of roads in the borough of Darlington.

Our pothole filling team is out on the network every day of the week – on average they fill in 7,000 potholes a year

When temperatures are still very low and there is a risk of ice and snow, or heavy rain, repairs to a pothole will be a temporary fix because poor weather conditions mean the new material and the edges of the pothole can’t be properly sealed and the new material is likely to come out again.

We’ll still do these temporary repairs when it isn’t safe to leave the pothole and wait until the weather turns for the better.

For a permanent repair the base of the pothole needs to be dry and the temperature above zero so no ice can form and there is no running water.

To carry out a repair, the base of the pothole is treated with a tack coat, which binds the new material to the base. The vertical edges of the hole will be painted with a bitumen emulsion to seal the joints.

If a pothole on a road is less than 40mm (1.6in) – or less than 20mm (0.8in) on a footpath – and is not considered dangerous it will not be repaired; however we will keep inspecting it to make sure it does not get worse.

HELP US TO HELP YOU Inspectors are out on the network every day but they can’t spot every pothole that appears.

You can help us by reporting potholes – once we receive a report an inspector will go out to look at it within 24 hours and determine what kind of repair it needs

WHAT DO WE NEED FROM YOU?

As well as reacting to requests to fix potholes, we inspect the roads for potholes. This is done every three months on urban roads and every 30 days on rural roads, as well as roads in the town centre.

Once it is logged by our inspectors a pothole will be repaired within five-20 days, depending on its size. The most dangerous potholes will be repaired in 24 hours or less.

Helping hands - our fant At County Durham and Darlington NHS Foundation Trust, we’re lucky enough to have almost 200 people volunteering across our services and hospital sites, bringing a wide range of skills for the benefit of our patients, their relatives and carers.

Volunteers are an invaluable part of #TeamCDDFT, often acting as an extra pair of hands or eyes, freeing up staff to prioritise delivering clinical care. For example, in our outpatient departments, it can be a volunteer who escorts the patients from the waiting area to their appointment or, on a ward, a volunteer can offer companionship for patients who may not have other visitors. We’re enormously grateful to them.

Our charity team has a number of volunteers who attend events or support our fundraising in other ways and we’re keen to recruit more. Charity development manager, Pat Chambers, said: “We rely on the generosity and goodwill of local people, organisations and businesses to make donations and run fundraising events for us.

Since the launch of our appeal to bring MRI scanners to Darlington Memorial and Bishop Auckland Hospitals almost two years ago, we’ve been absolutely bowled over by the goodwill people have for their local NHS service. Many people have made donations as a way of saying thank you for the care they or a loved one has received.

Join our team Tracey Hutchison offered to volunteer her time for the Trust’s charity following treatment for breast cancer. “I was diagnosed in March 2017 and underwent lengthy treatment. The thing that impressed me most about the people I came into contact with during treatment was how kind everyone was. Clinically, the care was everything I expected it to be and I’m now in recovery, but it was their sensitivity to how I was feeling that struck me most. I jumped at the chance to become a regular volunteer and have been involved in all kinds of things – for instance, I helped out behind the scenes at the Trust’s charity ball and also run a regular second hand bookstall.

“I was a science teacher for 21 years, prior to which I worked in laboratories. Doing nothing isn’t in my nature, so volunteering means I’m doing something useful, and meeting some lovely people whilst considering what the next stage of my life will involve. It’s great fun and raising money is very rewarding – people are so generous! I feel very lucky and would encourage anyone to get involved.”

Joan Nixon, 84, has been a volunteer for many years, and has been based at Darlington Memorial Hospital for the last two years, running a weekly tombola and fundraising sales two days a week. Joan said: “I consider myself one of the lucky ones – both in my health and in life generally as I live in a lovely community where we all care for each other.

This is my way of doing something for those less fortunate and I love the idea that what I do helps others. It also keeps my brain active and I meet lovely people.”

When artist, Emma Kendall, found out the charity was looking for someone to create a mural for the children’s waiting room in the new urgent treatment centre and emergency department at Darlington Memorial Hospital, she didn’t hesitate to offer to create a piece of original artwork – free of charge.

Emma was supported by volunteers who painted the background colours so she could concentrate on the detail. The paint was also donated by Dulux.

Emma said: “Knowing my work would be seen by, and hopefully bring pleasure to, children when they’re unwell is hugely rewarding.”

Last year the Friends of Darlington Memorial Hospital celebrated its 70th anniversary – it’s the same age as the NHS itself! The volunteers do lots of things for patients including bringing those without transport to the hospital and running a tea bar in the waiting area of medical outpatients.

June Blewitt, who runs the tea bar each Tuesday morning, said: “I worked fulltime for most of my life and volunteering is a great way to continue contributing. The best thing is meeting and chatting to so many lovely people – patients and staff. I love Tuesday mornings!”

Pat Chambers said: “Tracey, Joan and Emma have very different backgrounds but share a commitment to enhancing the experience we give patients. They’re also quick to say how much pleasure it gives them.”

Accolade for social workers Two dedicated social workers have had their hard work recognised at a national awards ceremony.

Penny Jackson and Joseph Robb were shortlisted in the recent Social Worker of the Year awards.

Penny, who works in adult mental health services, won a silver award in her category – mental health social worker of the year.

Joseph, an advanced practitioner in the Keeping Families Together team, was a finalist in the practice educator category which recognises social workers who have been involved in mentoring students and newlyqualified colleagues.

Penny, who joined the council three years ago, said: “I was surprised and really pleased to find out that I had been nominated. I was even more surprised when I won a silver award.”

Joseph said: “This nomination was a complete surprise, I am very grateful to judges, my colleagues and the students I have supported who nominated me for this award. This nomination would not have been possible without the fantastic support I receive from fellow practice educators, my team and managers.

“To have two social workers shortlisted shows the fantastic work social workers are doing in Darlington.”

Keeping South Park green and pleasant Volunteers with the newly-formed Darlington South Park Foundation are busy developing plans to help improve facilities and coordinate events and activities, with the support of Groundwork NE & Cumbria and the council.

Using feedback from its recent public consultation, in which more than 300 of you shared your views, and comments from those of you who attended its launch event in the summer, the group is also looking at funding opportunities to help deliver the plans.

Areas of work being considered include facilities, activities, maintenance and volunteering. They have already been given a welcome boost from Darlington Bondgate Round Table, which donated funds from its annual Santa Sleigh Ride in December.

DARLINGTON SEND ADVICE

New garden waste collection service The council’s new garden waste collection service will be launched in April.

More than 3,100 of you have registered an interest in the service and will soon be asked to pay the ÂŁ35 annual fee online.

When you make your payment, we will deliver a new 240 litre wheeled bin to store your garden waste in. If you have a larger garden, you can buy extra bins, up to a maximum of four per property.

The new service will be self-funding, so there will be no extra cost to the council. We will offer a fortnightly collection for 30 weeks of the year, between April and November.

Darlington Cares is aiming to supply all of the town’s secondary schools with free sanitary products. A recent survey found that one in 10 girls aged 14 to 21 in Britain cannot afford sanitary products, which has resulted in some missing school during their period. Award for restorative hub

The Durham Restorative Hub has been awarded the Restorative Justice Council’s quality mark in recognition of its excellent work to bring victims of crime and offenders together to find a positive way forward. Hundreds of victims every year are able to move on with their lives thanks to the work of the hub.

Residents, businesses and visitors have shared their views on Victoria Road in a consultation led by Groundwork NE & Cumbria on behalf of the council.

Initial feedback has helped develop proposals to improve the area, which will be outlined at two drop-in sessions at the Dolphin Centre on Saturday 19 January, 10.30am-1pm and Wednesday 23 January, 3.30-7pm.

A helping hand Kind-hearted volunteers have come together to help people stay safe at night.

Darlington Street Friends give up their time on a weekend to help anyone who is in the town centre on an evening and needs help, from drunken revellers to the vulnerable and homeless.

The volunteers give out water and flip-flops to help with dehydration and sore feet, and are trained in first aid to help with minor injuries.

Dressed in hi-visibility jackets, the seven-strong group of volunteers will initially be out once a month. If the scheme goes well, and more volunteers are recruited, they hope to expand to more nights.

Mags Theakston, from Kings Church, had the idea for the initiative, which is based on similar schemes like Consett Street Friends.

“We are all Christians and are motivated by our faith to care for others in our community. We just want to make sure everyone is safe,” she said.

“We will be there to help anyone who is out on a night out and finds themselves a bit worse for wear – this could be anything from providing a bottle of water and some flip-flops to alerting the emergency services or escorting them to a taxi.

“It could be our own sons or daughters in a vulnerable position with nobody to help them and that’s why we want to help.”

The volunteers have been working with landlords and door staff to set the initiative up, and are also supported by Durham Constabulary and the council.

PC Chris Horner, from Darlington police, said: “This is a fantastic initiative with volunteers giving up their free time to safeguard revellers and other vulnerable people.

“It will be great to see them become a valued part of night life in Darlington and I’ve no doubt that their work will keep people safer and take some of the strain off the emergency services.”

Graham Hall, the council’s head of community safety, said: “Darlington Street Friends is an excellent example of volunteers working closely with local agencies to help members of the community.

“Our aim is to provide a safe and enjoyable experience in Darlington and Street Friends have a vital role to play.”

Darlington Decides On Thursday 2 May, local government elections (borough and parish) will take place with residents asked to vote for who will represent them for the next four years.

Who can be a councillor?

You can be a councillor if you:

• are British, or a citizen of the Commonwealth or European Union

The council has 50 elected councillors, across 20 wards, who may represent a political party, local political group, or stand as an independent. There are 10 parish councils, with elections also being held.

• are at least 18 years old

What do borough councillors do?

There are many reasons why people decide to stand for election, including:

Councils are responsible for a wide range of services, from children and adult services, housing and regeneration to waste and recycling, roads, planning, public health and community safety.

Decisions on these services are taken by councillors, who set the vision and direction of the council. Councilllors also:

• represent the ward where they are elected • make decisions • develop and review council policy • scrutinise decisions taken by other councillors • carry out regulatory, quasi-judicial and statutory duties • carry out community leadership and engagement roles.

Most councillors hold regular ward surgeries to meet residents to discuss their problems or concerns. They also respond to letters, emails and phone calls from constituents and attend council and scrutiny meetings.

• are registered to vote in the area you have lived, worked or owned property in for at least 12 months before the election.

Why should I stand for election?

• wanting to make a difference and be involved in shaping the future of the local community • being concerned about your area and wanting to ensure that the community gets the right services

Councillors do not receive a salary but are given an allowance in recognition of the time and expenses incurred on council business.

Before you consider standing for election, you may want to discuss it with your family and friends to make sure they understand what you are taking on. You will need their support as you’ll have to spend some of your spare time on council business.

New year, n Spotlight on: Fostering With the growing need for foster carers and supported lodgings providers, the council’s children’s placement service manager, Bronwen Smith, tells us how her team work to place babies, children and young people in homes with foster carers who can meet their needs and help them to thrive.

“

We have some excellent, experienced foster carers and we need to recruit more to help us to meet growing demands. Carers are needed for children with complex needs, teenagers and sibling groups. It’s so important to keep brothers and sisters together whenever possible. All foster carers receive training and are assigned a social worker to support them as well as the option to call on experienced foster carers for help if needed.

Why foster with the council?

We have close working relationships with foster carers, social workers and other professionals and place Darlington children with local families. Everyone works as a team and as we are non-profit making we can ensure all our resources are used to provide the best service for our children and foster carers.

What type of people make good foster carers?

Anyone who is over 21 and in good health can consider fostering whether you have your own children or not. If you work, depending on the needs of the child and who else is able to support you, you can continue with your employment whilst fostering. Whatever your cultural, ethnic, religious background or sexuality, you can become a foster carer – you will need to demonstrate you can support a child from a different background to yours.

What qualities make a good foster carer?

No particular qualifications are needed. You need to be caring and compassionate, and able to understand the difficulties a child may have experienced so you can help and support them. Foster carers can make a real difference in the lives of children – we see this every day with the work our foster carers do.

Depending on the type of care you are approved to provide, you may look after a child for a few days or months, or provide long term foster care for children until they move to independent living.

What are supported lodgings?

This is accommodation, provided in your home, for a young person aged between 16-21 years who is leaving care and needs support to develop skills in budgeting, cooking, managing household tasks etc. to help prepare them for living on their own. Supported lodging providers receive training and access to help and support.

How much can I earn from becoming a foster carer/ supported lodgings provider?

As a foster carer, the amount of money you receive will depend on the age of the child/ children in your care and your knowledge and experience of working with children.

All carers receive a weekly amount to cover the cost of the needs of the child/children in their care, along with a professional fee.

The payment structure for supported lodgings is not the same as for foster carers. You receive one payment per week, and the young person makes a contribution too.

Extra lanes are to be added to one of the town’s busiest roundabouts, as major works take place on a scheme to tackle congestion.

Information about potential overnight road closures will also be shared in advance via Facebook and Twitter.

The redesigned roundabout at Yarm Road/McMullen Road will have two lanes on each approach road to the roundabout (with the exception of the retail park) to help more vehicles move through the junction every hour.

Work has been taking place in the area for several months to move a large number of utility services – such as gas, electric, water and broadband – in preparation for the main works to the road layout, which are now underway.

The majority of funding for the scheme was secured from the Department for Transport’s National Productivity Investment Fund, after the roundabout was identified as a major pinch point on what is one of the busiest commuter routes to and from the town centre and other business and retail areas.

A voice for young people

Ron and Ellen

Ellen Terry, 16, has been elected as young Police, Crime and Victims’ Commissioner for County Durham and Darlington for 2018-19.

Ellen was elected by police cadets to represent all young people in the area.

She said: “I have always wanted to help people and I thought that this was a great opportunity. I hope to make a positive impact and help to raise awareness of different issues affecting young people’s lives.”

In her manifesto, Ellen’s priorities were: • improving outcomes for victims and perpetrators of crime who suffer from mental health difficulties

Ellen has already started asking senior decision-makers from the council, the NHS and police challenging questions about the importance they give to young people. As part of national Take Over Challenge day, Ellen spoke to Chief Constable Mike Barton about how the policing of substance misuse is changing and how police officers engage with schools and pupils.

She said: “Getting information from these people can really help me achieve my aims and I have been able to develop plans to put my priorities into action.”

Gym a family affair for Anna t ar S e r o M Move

Keeping active has become a real family affair for busy mum of two Anna Bakalakov. Anna, who used to live in the Netherlands, started exercising three years ago. Before this, she worked long hours and couldn’t find the time to keep fit.

Things changed when she started coming to the Dolphin Centre with her first child. She used the crèche facility to free up time to use the gym.

Anna gets on with her own thing in the gym, doing cardio and a few toning exercises and weights. She also enjoys taking her children swimming Anna said: “The instructors are really helpful and supportive, fun and friendly – they are like family. I have a great laugh with them and have made some good friends in the gym.”

Her two children go swimming, her daughter is in MyFirstSwim Academy and her son has swimming and football lessons on Saturday mornings.

The Dolphin Centre is an all-round family facility for Anna and her family – they all love it.

Help keep our children safe The council’s road safety team is working with schools and junior road safety officers to help teach children road safety.

Pupils at Corporation Road Primary School put their creative skills to good use to promote road safety outside the front of their school.

Following an assembly, where junior road safety officers explained how dangerous parking outside the school was becoming, the pupils set to work colouring flags to make a string of bunting, which has since been hung outside school reminding drivers to keep the zigzags clear to ensure a safe place for children to cross the road.

Parking on the yellow zigzags blocks the view for children and parents trying to cross the road, makes it difficult for the school crossing patrol attendants to do their job and will land you with a fine when you are caught!

Other schools are following the lead and are joining in the ‘keep the zigzags clear’ initiative - so keep an eye out for more bunting and send us a photo when you spot some!

Council Leader’s Column It is always heart-warming to hear the difference volunteers can make to our community. One of Darlington’s biggest assets is its people and I am so proud of the impact so many of you make on those around you.

There are lots of examples in this edition of One Darlington of people selflessly giving their time to help others. If you are a volunteer please accept my thanks for the invaluable work you are doing. I know we all have very busy lives but if you can spare just an hour a week you could make a real contribution to our community. Whatever your skills or interests there is a volunteering opportunity for you – come along to the Darlington Cares Volunteering Fair on Thursday 7 February at the Dolphin Centre to find out more! There will be representatives from a wide range of organisations all looking for your help. You really can make a difference.

On Thursday 2 May, there will be local elections when you will be asked to vote for the councillors who represent you and your interests. However, this isn’t the only time you can influence local decision making. Throughout the year, the council holds various committee meetings which are all open to the public and where you can have your say on the topics being discussed. It is so important that as residents you see democracy in action and realise how you can put your views across and be heard. As we start a new year it is a good time for reflection. Sunday 27 January is Holocaust Memorial Day when we remember those murdered in the Holocaust, killed under Nazi persecution and in the many genocides since. Celebrating Communities is holding a special event at Queen Elizabeth Sixth Form College on Monday 28 January to bring everyone together to mark the occasion. You can find out more on page 18. Clubs and Societies Many clubs and societies rely on volunteers to keep going, making it possible for others to enjoy their hobbies and interests. It’s because of their hard work that there are lots of clubs and societies in and around the borough.

Darlington Climate Concern is a new group for people feeling concerned by the rapidly increasing extreme weather around the world, the harmful effect on people and wildlife, and our own responsibilities.

The intention is to discuss and better understand climate change, challenge scepticism, follow developments, and to meet with likeminded people.

Opus 4 Jazz Club held its first gig on 30 April 2004 with the Sue Ferris Quintet at the Travellers Rest, Cockerton. Founders Terry and Noel were members of the Opus 3 Jazz Club in the early sixties and decided to revamp the name with an adjustment for a new club catering for modern jazz devotees.

The club will be 15 in April and will continue to showcase the exceptional musical talent available in the area, particularly from Newcastle and Leeds, where The Travellers Rest is considered to be the quintessential jazz club. Word has spread to such a level that London-based high profile players seek to appear when on tour in the North East. Big names to look out for include Andrea Vickary with possibly Vasilis Xenopoulos and Nigel Price later in the year.

The founder of the group, Peter Hale, has been a speaker about climate change since 2004. He has also set up a network of speakers around the country.

Having previously been involved in a similar group in Northallerton, he is now Darlington-based and wants to get local people together on this subject.

The venue and frequency of meetings will be decided according to the numbers interested.
