Carnival Season in the Caribbean

A Celebration of Culture, Music, and Colour

The Caribbean is famous for its vibrant and high-energy carnivals, drawing visitors from across the globe to experience the spectacle of music, dance, and elaborate costumes. Each island hosts its own unique celebration, deeply rooted in cultural traditions and community spirit. Whether you’re a first-time visitor or a seasoned reveller, carnival season offers an unparalleled experience filled with dazzling parades, infectious rhythms, and unrestrained joy. These celebrations not only provide entertainment but also serve as a testament to the resilience and creativity of Caribbean communities. The joyous energy and cultural richness make carnival a cherished tradition that continues to evolve and expand year after year.

Caribbean Airlines flies you from Toronto to Trinidad for Carnival held each February and it is among the most iconic in the region, famous for its extravagant costumes, lively parade floats, and the pulsating beats of calypso, soca, and steel pan music. The road march in Port of Spain is a highlight, where revellers dance for hours in the streets. Events like J’ouvert, a wild pre-dawn street party, and the Soca Monarch competition, where top artists battle for the best performance, add to the excitement. This carnival is more than just an event; it is a cultural phenomenon that brings together people from all walks of life in a shared experience of music, movement, and artistic expression. The spirit of the festival is infectious, making it an unforgettable experience that lingers in the hearts of those who participate.

St. Martin’s Carnival, celebrated from late February into early March, blends French and Dutch influences, reflecting the island’s multicultural heritage. The festivities include dynamic street parties, vibrant parades, and a diverse mix of music, from soca and reggae to Latin rhythms. The island’s picturesque backdrop makes it a stunning setting for the celebrations, attracting visitors who want to immerse themselves in its dynamic cultural landscape. The fusion of traditions, lively dance performances, and elaborate costumes create a thrilling and immersive atmosphere that captivates locals and tourists alike.

Bonaire’s Carnival, spanning from mid-February to early March, may be smaller in scale but is no less lively. This hidden gem offers an intimate and authentic experience, with street parades, music, and dance infused with Afro-Caribbean heritage. The Grand Marcha is a major highlight, where revellers take to the streets in a spectacular display of energy and colour. The unique charm of Bonaire’s celebrations lies in their close-knit, community-driven atmosphere, which allows visitors to experience Caribbean traditions up close. With locals enthusiastically participating in every aspect of the festivities, from costume creation to dance rehearsals, the sense of unity and pride is palpable.

In Curaçao, carnival season is a thrilling event that features massive parades, elaborate floats, and dazzling costumes. The island bursts into life with street parties, music festivals, and competitions, creating an atmosphere of excitement and joy. The grand parades showcase a mix of traditional Caribbean styles and modern influences, making it an unforgettable cultural spectacle. Visitors can enjoy a variety of events, from the Tumba Festival, which highlights local music and passionate performances, to the Farewell Parade, where the celebrations culminate in an explosion of colour, rhythm, and sound. The sheer scale and artistic brilliance of Curaçao’s carnival set it apart as a must-visit event for travellers.

St. Lucia’s carnival, held in July, combines modern revelry with traditional elements, offering a visually and musically rich experience. The island’s stunning landscapes provide a breathtaking setting for the energetic street parties and masquerade bands. Soca and calypso music dominate the festivities, enhancing the infectious spirit of the celebration. St. Lucia’s carnival is a growing attraction, with more international visitors joining the lively processions each year. The fusion of dazzling costumes, pulsating music, and electrifying performances ensures that every moment is infused with excitement and cultural expression.

Vincy Mas in St. Vincent and the Grenadines, spanning from late June to early July, is one of the most anticipated summer carnivals. With vibrant street parades, soca parties, and the celebrated King and Queen of the Bands competition, this festival is a fusion of music, dance, and cultural expression. The highlight is the energetic Monday and Tuesday parades, where revellers flood the streets in elaborate costumes, dancing to infectious beats. The festival also features beauty pageants and calypso competitions, making it a multi-faceted celebration of Vincentian culture. The spirit of togetherness and cultural pride is evident in every aspect of the event, drawing both locals and tourists into its lively embrace.

Antigua and Barbuda’s carnival, held in late July to early August, is one of the most exciting in the region. Dating back to the 1950s, it celebrates the island’s heritage with lively music, spectacular costumes, and high-energy parades. The Road March is a standout event, with revellers taking to the streets from dawn to dusk in one of the Caribbean’s most dynamic street parties. The festival also includes steel pan competitions and cultural showcases that highlight Antigua and Barbuda’s rich musical legacy. The grandeur of the celebrations, combined with the warmth and enthusiasm of the participants, creates an atmosphere of pure exhilaration.

Grenada’s SpiceMas, celebrated in early August, is known for its rich cultural heritage and vibrant festivities. The Monday and Tuesday Mas parades are filled with colour

and energy, while the Calypso Monarch competition showcases the island’s top musical talent. The Traditional Jab Jab Parade, featuring revellers covered in oil or mud, is a striking tribute to Grenada’s African roots. This carnival stands out for its deep historical connections and powerful expressions of Caribbean identity. The pulsating beats of the drums and the spirited performances create an immersive and electrifying experience that honours the island’s history and traditions.

Montserrat’s Carnival, held in December, is a festive celebration featuring concerts, parades, and masquerade balls. The Grand Parade is the highlight, with revellers donning elaborate costumes and dancing to the rhythms of soca, calypso, and reggae music. This intimate carnival reflects the island’s warm and close-knit community spirit. Montserrat’s festivities are particularly special due to their ties to Irish and African heritage, offering a unique blend of cultural influences. The blend of traditions and festive joy make Montserrat’s carnival a truly distinctive experience that highlights the island’s diverse cultural fabric.

Junkanoo in the Bahamas, taking place on Boxing Day and New Year’s Day, is one of the most visually stunning festivals in the Caribbean. Known for its dazzling parades, elaborate handmade costumes, and rhythmic drumming, horns, and whistles, Junkanoo is a vibrant expression of Bahamian history and creativity. The festival’s unique artistry and dynamic energy make it an unforgettable experience. Junkanoo’s roots date back centuries, and its elaborate preparations involve months of dedicated craftsmanship by local artisans. The sheer scale and artistic brilliance of the performances showcase the depth of Bahamian culture and the dedication of its people.

The annual Goombay Summer Festival is held on a number of Out Islands in The Bahamas. On Grand Bahama Island, it is celebrated every Thursday in July. This festival showcases cultural element such

as Junkanoo rush-outs, rake and scrape, quadrille dancing, and authentic cuisine and crafts.

On the island of New Providence and hosted by the Ministry of Tourism, the Goombay Summer Festival showcases Bahamian cultural heritage. Major Junkanoo Groups will perform in choreograph dancing, music, and costume, in a one-of-a-kind parade and a concert, featuring top Bahamian entertainers, a Kiddies Corner, Games and Competition, a Culinary Demo as well as native food, beverages, art and craft on sale. This event will be held from1:00pm –1:00am, on each Saturday in July.

Carnivals in the Caribbean are more than just festivals—they are living expressions of culture, history, and community. From the grandeur of Trinidad and Tobago’s celebrations to the intimate yet spirited revelry in Bonaire and Montserrat, each island brings something unique to the season. Whether you’re drawn to the spectacle of massive parades or the deep cultural roots of traditional festivities, the Caribbean offers an exhilarating experience that lingers long after the music fades. Mark your calendars and prepare for an unforgettable celebration of life, music, and culture, as each island welcomes you with open arms to revel in the joy of carnival season.

Sailing Paradise

2025 Caribbean Regattas & Maritime Adventures

Winds are coming from dead astern – blowing at almost twenty knots – as we race a sailing catamaran called “Talese” through white-capped aquamarine seas in a passage from St. Barth’s. Sint Maarten dead ahead, we look for the committee boat that marks the finish the finish line. It’s the final day of a four-day regatta called the Caribbean Multihull Challenge, a celebration combining both a serious racing class and a rally class for sailors who aren’t in such a rush, boaters just happy to experience a true sailing paradise.

From a spectator-friendly racing event just off the beach at Sint Maarten’s Great Bay followed by evening fireworks to a beachside paella party on St. Barth’s, January’s Caribbean Multihull Challenge reflects the changing environment of Caribbean sailing. According to co-founder Robbie Ferron, “the growth of multihulls in sailing fleets here in the Caribbean has been exponential.”

And this celebration of sailing that particularly recognizes the evolution of the sport of sailing is but one in a cornucopia of nautical must-dos as many and varied as the Caribbean islands that host these regattas.

In early March the Heineken Regatta, also hosted by Sint Maarten, attracts some of the sport’s most serious sailors and technologicallyadvanced boats. Long a fixture on the sailing regatta circuit, offering races in several different classes, the Heineken Regatta is but one more event sure to please whether you’re a serious racer, a casual sailor, a boat-lover or just someone who loves the accompanying shore parties.

No coincidence that the waters around Sint Maarten and St. Martin have earned this area a reputation as one of the Caribbean’s top sailing charter destinations.

And this is just one island. Regattas right across the Caribbean offer exhilarating race courses and passages through sapphire seas with views of emerald hills, alabaster beaches and pastel-painted villages for background.

Add in almost-always cooperative winds and it’s hardly surprising that the Caribbean offers some of the best sailing in the world.

Consider the twin-island nation of Antigua and Barbuda, a must-do nautical destination thanks to its sheer beauty, the wealth of anchorages and a whole collection of regattas decorating the calendar, many of which are scheduled to coincide with the “Christmas Winds” that blow across the Caribbean from December into April.

For the past two years expensive and sleek sailboats called Oysters have met in Nelson’s Dockyard for a January owners’ regatta. Nelson’s Dockyard, crown jewel of English Harbour, boasts a two-hundred-year history, a still-functioning dockyard that was the Leeward headquarters of the Royal Navy in the eighteenth-century. In addition to the Oyster Regatta, it also plays host to two must-do regattas.

Come for the mid-April event – the Classic Yacht Regatta – and admire vessels that are the stuff of history itself: schooners, brigantines, twomasted commanders of the water.

Toward the end of April, the island welcomes Antigua Sailing Week. Watch races from your vantage-point high atop Shirley Heights, then, come sunset, dance the night away to Reggae at nearby Dow Interpretive Centre, just one more evening event that makes Antigua Sailing Week a nautical must-do.

February sees the running of the RORC (Royal Ocean Racing Club) Nelson’s Cup series, highlighted by a round-Antigua race, followed shortly by the RORC 600, in which competitors race through waters lapping the shores of Anguilla, Sint Maarten, St. Kitt’s and St. Eustatius in a grueling six-hundred-nautical mile feat of endurance.

If feats of endurance impress you, visit Antigua in January and cheer on boats crossing the finish line in the Talisker Rowing Challenge, boats whose crews have literally physically rowed across the Atlantic.

If you like still more history with your nautical delights, visit the British Virgin Islands in January for the Painkiller Cup. The BVIs are considered the premier destination for sailors of all stripes and the regatta’s namesake is also

a tidbit of nautical lore. It’s named for a local drink invented at a bar catering to sailors, a cocktail that originally featured Pusser’s, former official purveyor of rum to the Royal Navy.

Head south to another delightful archipelago called St. Vincent and the Grenadines, so beautiful they were featured in the first “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie, islands separated by challenging if beautiful passages dominated by constant easterly winds. Enjoy the shore parties or watch the races that characterize the long-running Bequia Easter Regatta (included races feature traditional Bequia-built schooners), based out of Admiralty Bay, a photogenic anchorage well-loved by sailors. This year, for the very first time, they’ve added a new wrinkle: an inter-island race series called the Bougainvilla Cup. Participate in the nine days of races comprising the inaugural running of SVG Sailing Week then savour shore activities from parties to cultural events. Or immerse yourself more completely in local nautical culture when traditional schooners participate in the Canouan Regatta held in June.

Come January the delightful island trio of Grenada and the Grenadines is home to the long-running Sailing Week. This year’s festivities (always a mustdo January regatta) were actually centred to a great extent around the island of Carriacou – an initiative geared to garner support for a gorgeous idyllic island so battered by last year’s hurricane Beryl.

August also sees the running of a fascinating regatta in Carriacou, where locals compete in locally built tradition Carriacou sloops (the island has a long and respected shipbuilding history). Past celebrations have included fun shore activities like greased pole competitions (don’t even ask), though this year’s events will be scaled back thanks to Hurricane Beryl.

For the better part of a year the Caribbean is home to a veritable fleet of regattas, some challenging the skills of the most serious racers, many open to cruising boats just looking for an excuse for some fun.

Whether you come for the Caribbean Multihull Challenge, the Heineken Regatta, the all-new SVG Sailing Week or traditional events like the Carriacou Regatta Festival, whether you’re serious about the sport, just like boats or really enjoy parties, you’ll be sure to agree.

The Caribbean is a sailing paradise.

The year kicks off in Antigua and Barbuda with the One National Music Festival, held from January 11-12. This festival is a lively celebration of both Caribbean and global sounds, with performances spanning genres such as reggae, soca, calypso, jazz, pop, and contemporary music. It serves as a platform for emerging artists and offers a chance to experience vibrant performances, cultural displays, and island celebrations. The festival is a perfect way to immerse yourself in the island’s music scene while enjoying its lively atmosphere. In the same month, from January 23-26, Bequia in St. Vincent hosts the Bequia Music Fest. This intimate festival takes place against the stunning backdrop of the island’s beaches, where music lovers can relax on the sand while listening to a mix of reggae, rock, jazz, and soca. It’s an idyllic blend of great music and peaceful island charm, making it an excellent choice for those seeking both cultural immersion and a serene getaway.

For blues enthusiasts, the Mustique Blues Festival, running from January 22 to February 6, offers a more refined musical experience. Held in the luxurious and tranquil setting of Mustique, this festival features world-class blues musicians performing in intimate venues. The serene atmosphere of the island combined with top-tier talent creates an unforgettable blues experience. March brings a diverse range of musical events, starting with the Moonsplash Music Festival in Anguilla from March 13-16. Known for its focus on reggae and roots music, this festival attracts music lovers from around the world. Set against the island’s beautiful beaches, it features laid-back beachside performances from well-known artists, creating an unforgettable musical experience that embraces both the spirit of the Caribbean and the laid-back vibes of the island.

Anguilla also hosts the Annual Hats & Heels event from March 4-9, a celebration that combines glamour with music. This chic festival features live performances, DJ sets, and themed parties across the island. Guests are encouraged to dress in style while enjoying lively tunes in a setting that blends high fashion with vibrant music. On March 15, Antigua and Barbuda presents Soothe: A Night of Neo-Soul, Jazz Rhythms, and Spoken Words. This one-night celebration is ideal for those who enjoy the smooth sounds of neo-soul and jazz, as well as the spoken word. With its relaxed, sophisticated atmosphere, Soothe offers a unique way to unwind while experiencing the serene side of Caribbean culture through music and poetry.

On March 14 and 15, the Bahamian Music and Heritage Festival celebrated on the island of Exuma, is an exciting time for the whole family. This festival features an awesome line-up of The Bahamas’ most popular and talented musicians. Arts and craft such as wood and

conch shell carvings, sand jewelry, straw craft and blown glass jewelry are just some of items that will be on sale along with delicious native dishes. There are activities for kids as well as adults including storytelling, Bahamian dancing and cooking demonstrations.

The Cayman Islands also contribute to the musical calendar with the Capella Music Festival on March 29. This event showcases the island’s music scene, offering performances in various genres, including pop, classical, and jazz. The outdoor concerts, set against stunning Caribbean views, provide an experience that combines musical enjoyment with breathtaking scenery.

In late May, from the 21st to the 26th, Aruba hosts the SB Music Festival, a high-energy event that features diverse performances ranging from reggae to EDM. The festival attracts international crowds, creating an electric atmosphere where top-tier music and the tropical fun of the island blend seamlessly together.

Moving into the summer months, the worldrenowned Reggae SumFest in Jamaica takes place from July 13-19 in Montego Bay. This festival is the largest reggae celebration in the world, drawing huge crowds to witness the best in reggae, dancehall, and soca music. With vibrant performances and a deep connection to Jamaican culture, Reggae SumFest stands as the premier Caribbean music festival of the year.

The Caribbean’s music festivals in 2025 provide an unparalleled opportunity to experience the region’s soul and rhythm. Whether you want to immerse yourself in the upbeat reggae rhythms at Reggae SumFest, relax to the smooth sounds of jazz and neo-soul at Soothe in Antigua, or dance to the infectious beats of soca and calypso at the One National Music Festival, there’s something for every music lover. These festivals bring together diverse cultures, rich rhythms, and unforgettable moments, making the Caribbean the perfect destination to celebrate the universal language of music.
