THE VELUX ATIKA CONCEPT IS AN EXAMPLE OF FUTURE STRATEGIES FOR LOW-ENERGY HOUSING THAT CAN BE BUILT WITH EXISTING PRODUCTS, USING THE DESIGN OF THE BUILDING TO OPTIMISE ITS ENERGY PERFORMANCE.

Atika is a conceptual home that shows better living conditions with an interesting architecture of simple but efficient solutions, inspired on the Mediterranean building tradition. The living space features optimum internal climate conditions and daylight, at the same time that it shows minimum energy consumption (lower than 48 kWh/m2 per year) and reduced CO2 emissions associated with its use. Combines the simplicity of traditional architecture with the latest techniques in cooling and automation systems for buildings. The roof and its sloping are north-south facing. Each room inside the house have its own roof geometry. Atika also makes use of the roof to collect solar energy and fresh coastal air in order to ventilate the house, avoiding the need for cooling systems in great measure.

The selection of materials, the strategic position of the windows (facing according to room function) and the solar panels exposed to the sun at different angles, allow for high efficiency and a pleasant in door climate all year round. Atika is a house for the Mediterranean climate that looks into the future of our living environments. Vernacular architecture in southern Europe is characterised by its clever and simple use of resources: the sun and air in abundance but with water as a scarcer commodity.

Atika es una casa conceptual que presenta unas mejores condiciones de vida mediante una interesante arquitectura de soluciones simples pero eficientes, inspiradas en la tradición de la construcción mediterránea. El espacio cuenta con condiciones óptimas de clima interno y luz natural, al tiempo que muestra un consumo de energía mínimo (menos de 48 kWh/m2 año) y reduce las emisiones de CO2 asociadas a su uso. Combina la simplicidad de la arquitectura tradicional con las últimas técnicas en sistemas de refrigeración y automatización de edificios. La cubierta y su pendiente se colocan mirando de norte a sur. Cada habitación dentro de la casa tiene su propia geometría de techos. Atika también hace uso de la cubierta para recoger la energía solar y el aire fresco de la costa para ventilar la casa, evitando en gran medida la necesidad de refrigeración. La selección de materiales, la posición estratégica de las ventanas (orientadas según la función de cada habitación) y los paneles solares expuestos al sol en distintos ángulos, permiten una alta eficiencia y un agradable clima interior durante todo el año. Atika es una casa pensada para el clima mediterráneo pero que mira hacia el futuro de nuestros entornos de vida. La arquitectura vernácula en el sur de Europa se caracteriza por un inteligente y sencillo uso de los recursos: sol y aire fresco en abundancia, pero con el agua como un bien escaso.

For centuries, these resources have been used for cooling or heating and for achieving the best possible comfort of human habitats. Inspired by this Mediterranean tradition, Atika is an attempt to achieve greater comfort and reduced energy consumption in a house with simple but effective solutions. It attempts to bridge and combine the best of past and future: the simplicity and the economy of resources of traditional architecture with the most recent technology in construction, heating, cooling and building automation. Atika was conceived as a prefabricated modular housing structure, representing the top of a building. It has therefore been built to be assembled and disassembled several times without decreasing the quality of its construction. The house is transported by road to its assembly site. So both the structures of the exhibition ground floor and the dwelling need to be self-bearing and able to resist the stress and strain of crane lifting.

Durante muchos siglos, estos recursos se han utilizado para la enfriar o calentar espacios, y para lograr el mejor confort posible en los hábitats humanos. Inspirado por esta tradición mediterránea, Atika intenta lograr una mayor comodidad y un menor consumo de energía en una casa con soluciones simples pero efectivas. Intenta salvar y combinar lo mejor del pasado y el futuro: la sencillez y la economía de los recursos de la arquitectura tradicional con la más reciente tecnología en construcción, calefacción, refrigeración y automatización de la construcción. Atika fue concebido como una estructura de viviendas modulares prefabricadas, representando la parte superior de un edificio. Por lo tanto, ha sido construido para ser montado y desmontado varias veces sin disminuir la calidad de su construcción. A convoy of four trucks is needed because of the dimensions of the elements: 10 x 3,5x3,6 m. On the other hand, the large dimensions help to accelerate assembly and reduce critical construction weak points on site. The main structure of Atika consists of perimeter steel frames for the floor and roof surfaces. Steel columns and diagonal braces stabilise the structure vertically. The floor is a reinforced concrete slab over a corrugated galvanised sheet. A corrugated sheet on the roof supports the 16 cm. thick thermal insulation panels and a lightweight galvanised steel frame at the exterior walls. Roofs and facades are both clad with a high-pressure laminate plate on the outside and plasterboard panels on the inside. The interior partitions are also plaster- board double skin walls with interior acoustic insulation. The floor finishing are ceramic tiles for the interior of the house and wood for the patio and terraces.

Green Features: - Thermal solar panels: as well as collecting energy to produce 100% of the domestic hot water needed, they are used to feed an absorption machine that is used to cool the air indoors whenever the climate conditions make it truly inevitable.

- The solar collectors supply energy not only for heating but also for cooling purposes. They can accumulate about 70 % of the hot water supply and up to 30 % of the energy for space heating. When cooling is needed, the solar collectors provide energy for the houseÊs air conditioning system.

- The homeÊs management system automatically controls the angle of the windows in order to allow or prevent sunlight or ventilation coming in whenever necessary.

- Natural ventilation takes advantage of two principles: first, as air is heated it becomes less dense and flows upwards – the stack effect. Second, wind movement over and around the house creates pressure difference across the house. If a space has high placed air outlets and low inlets, cross-ventilation occurs efficiently as the indoor air is heated. The greater the vertical distance between the outlet and inlet, the greater the ventilation rate will be.

- Air movement, even if the air is hot, helps to improve the perceived indoor comfort.

- Atika was designed to optimise the use of natural ventilation and night cooling with the help of an advanced electronic control system that automatically monitors the indoor climate.

The system regulates the indoor climate by automatically opening and closing the windows and its accessories – blinds, shades and roller shutters – and by activating the cooling/heating system according to pre-set parameters like temperature, humidity, time of day, season, burglary prevention, etc.

- The floor tiles have a high thermal mass and the plasterboard walls are coated with white plastic paint to reflect maximum daylight inside.

- Sunlight heat is controlled and avoided by closing screens and shutters in summer. Indoor temperature must not fall below 18°C or exceed 26°C. Shutters close if the outdoor temperature is higher than the indoor temperature.

Características de Sostenibilidad: - Paneles solares térmicos: además de recolectar energía para producir el 100% del agua caliente sanitaria necesaria, sirven para alimentar una máquina de absorción que se usa para enfriar el aire en los interiores siempre que las condiciones climáticas lo hagan verdaderamente inevitable.

- Los colectores solares suministran energía no sólo para la calefacción, sino también para fines de refrigeración. Pueden acumular cerca del 70% del agua caliente de suministro y hasta un 30% de la energía para calefacción. Cuando se necesita enfriamiento, los colectores solares proporcionan la energía para el sistema de aire acondicionado de la casa.

- El sistema de gestión de la casa controla automáticamente el ángulo de las ventanas para permitir o impedir que la luz del sol o la ventilación cruzada se utilicen sólo cuando sea necesario.

- La ventilación natural se aprovecha de dos principios: primero, a medida que se calienta el aire, éste se vuelve menos denso y fluye hacia arriba: el efecto de la pila. - Atika fue diseñada para optimizar el uso de ventilación natural y el enfriamiento durante la noche mediante la ayuda de un sistema avanzado de control electrónico que registra automáticamente el clima interior. El sistema regula el clima interior automáticamente abriendo y cerrando las ventanas y sus accesorios (persianas, cortinas y lamas) y activando el sistema de refrigeración y calefacción según unos parámetros preestablecidos, como temperatura, humedad, hora del día, temporada, prevención de robo, etc.

- Las baldosas presentan una alta masa térmica y las paredes de pladur están recubiertas con pintura plástica blanca para reflejar la máxima luz en el interior.

- El calor del sol es controlado y evitado mediante el cierre de cortinas y persianas en verano. La temperatura interior no debe caer por debajo de 18°C o superar los 26°C. Las lamas se cierran si la temperatura exterior es superior a la temperatura interior.

- Night cooling occurs by partially opening all windows.

THE HSU HOUSE IS A SMALL HOME DESIGNED USING PASSIVE SOLAR PRINCIPLES TO CREATE AN INEXPENSIVE, ECOLOGICALLY SENSITIVE, ENERGY EFFICIENT DWELLING FOR A GROWING YOUNG FAMILY.

Rising out of a hillside south of Ithaca in upstate New York, the bifurcating roof covers a house organized around a three story main living space which functions as both a spatial nexus and a natural ventilation stack. The volume is divided by an interior south facing cast-in-place concrete heat sink mass wall, which stores energy and animates light, creating an all season solarium that, in the summer, opens and unfolds into the natural landscape.The exterior surface of the house features solar-responsive cement board siding pattern that transitions from dark to light according to its orientation. From the outset, the intention was to minimize the cost of finishes and fixtures and spend the budget on structure and systems. Consequently, the material palette is simple: bamboo, drywall, cement board & concrete, while the forms and spaces are more complex. The Hsu House is Silver LEED certified, super-insulated and was carefully designed in an iterative process using thermal and daylight simulation software to balance day lighting and thermal performance. The relatively harsh climate in upstate New York precludes large areas of fenestration, and with less than 30% of the total envelope glazed the house is well lit at all times when the sun is above the horizon. The house was designed with lightweight materials in mind: the cantilevering structure is primarily engineered wood.

Remontando la ladera de una colina al sur de Ithaca, en el estado de Nueva York, el techo bifurcado cubre una casa organizada alrededor de un espacio principal de estar de tres pisos, que funciona como un nexo espacial y una pila de ventilación natural. The mass wall was designed as the sculptural focus of the house, defining the entryway, the kitchen, the solarium, and the edge of the triple height main living space. A large number of parametric iterations were tested in relation to performance, aesthetics and fabrication constraints. The primary concern was maintaining a level of porosity that would create a sense of lightness, allowing for views through the wall and to counteract the tendency of the concrete to read as a massive and unwelcome subdividing element in what is, after all, a fairly compact and spatially diverse living space.

El muro masivo fue diseñado como el enfoque escultórico de la casa, definiendo la entrada, la cocina, el solárium y el borde de la sala principal de triple altura. Green Features: - Designed in an iterative process using thermal and daylight simulation software to balance day lighting and thermal performance.

- Less than 30% of the total envelope glazed.

- Opaque walls contain at least six inches of open cell polyurethane insulation and another two inches of rigid polyisocynaurate underneath the cement board cladding.

- The exterior envelope has an extremely low air infiltration rate.

- A mass wall dividing the solarium from the main space of the house was considered necessary to damp diurnal energy fluxes and store absorbed solar radiation.

- Wall surface area was maximized to increase the rate of thermal transfer between the sun, the wall, and the interior environment.

- The shape was designed to allow light from the solarium to pass through the structure, allowing illumination of the north side of the first floor of the house.
