Soft play centre closes for good A CHILDREN’S play centre in Tonbridge has had to close after government restrictions on social distancing make it no longer financially viable. It was hoped that Wear M Out in Sovereign Way would be able to reopen on August 15, after the government gave the go ahead for soft play centres to reopen. At the time, the Tonbridge centre said they needed time to analyse the new guidance imposed on the industry before they could reopen. Among the restrictions imposed on soft play centres has been a reduction in capacity and stringent cleaning and operating procedures.

Plans for £180million development set to create 3,000 jobs goes before Council By Richard Williams A NEW business Park that promises to generate £162million of economic value a year to the borough of Tonbridge & Malling has been submitted to the Council for planning permission. The £180million development on the site of Aylesford Newsprint could create 3,000 new jobs. The proposals, put forward by Panattoni, includes seven industrial buildings offering 177,000 sq ft of new commercial space, a £6million link road and landscaping. The 90-acre brownfield site

has been vacant since 2015. Tony Watkins, Development Director at Panattoni, said: “When fully occupied in 2024 the site will deliver more than £162m per annum of economic value (Gross Value Added) to the Borough of Tonbridge & Malling, and Kent as a whole, by supporting 3,000 industrial, logistics, distribution and manufacturing jobs, and a further 2,560 indirect jobs. “With one billion pounds of development projects across the UK we are working with many of the world’s leading companies. We are confident that Panattoni Park will meet

these companies’ needs and also provide buildings to support the growth of local companies constrained by the lack of facilities.”

‘It’s positive to see such confidence in the region’ If the planning application is approved by Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council, it is hoped that construction will begin in 2021, with first occupation expected spring 2022 and completion of the development by 2024.

The Covid-19 pandemic has changed the way that many large multinational companies are operating. Tony Watkins added: “We have seen a dramatic increase in companies looking for buildings that can simultaneously support their online as well as physical high street presence. Our proposals, consistent with Tonbridge & Malling Borough Council’s economic ambitions, come at the right time as the country considers how to restart, renew and build in economic resilience. “We have consulted widely

But Wear M Out has announced that the rules make it no ‘longer financially possible’ to operate. In a statement, the company said: “It is with regret that Wear M Out will not be reopening permanently as a direct result of Covid-19. The new restrictions and guidelines in place to operate Soft Play centres makes it no longer financially possible. “Unfortunately without enough financial support to cover overheads the business simply has no money left in the pot. “Thank you for your support and custom over the years and we thank all of our staff who this affects massively.” Wear M Out was also forced to close its Maidstone soft play centre for similar reasons. The news will come as a blow to parents of young children in Tonbridge, who have already lost one activity centre Earlier this year, trampoline centre Jump In was forced to close after attempts to find a new premises failed.
