THIS week we’re joining with the children of St Luke’s Nursery School in Tunbridge Wells to wish all of you - our readers and and our advertisers - a very happy and safe Christmas and a more prosperous New Year. Just as the youngsters and staff at the nursery found a way to overcome the challenges imposed upon us by the coronavirus crisis – they made a DVD of their nativity that parents and family were able to watch with them at home – so we know that the people of our of town will find a way to win through. We’ve already seen that the community spirit is alive and well with Santa poised to deliver gifts tomorrow
night [Thursday] to more than 400 children who might have had an empty Christmas stocking. All of that is thanks to the Mayor’s Annual Toy Appeal. Then there are the donations to the Nourish Community Foodbank that ensures 300 local families will not go hungry over the festive period.
Greater hope There are plenty of other examples of people going above and beyond for the community, such as the awesome efforts of our NHS staff, both frontline and behind the scenes, battling daily literally to keep us alive, plus the
efforts of staff at schools fighting to keep our youngsters safe while continuing to teach. And there are so many other unsung heroes who deserve our thanks. Yes, these are dark days as we struggle to carry on with some semblance of a ‘normal’ life while in the grip of Tier 4 lockdown’but the vaccination programme now underway in our town and our efforts to observe the ‘rules’ mean we will come out the other side. We will go into a New Year with greater hope. So for now, wherever you are spending Christmas, focus on the present, look for the good ... and enjoy the moment!
Next week [December 30] we’re taking a break and will not be publishing this newspaper. We will, though, be back with a special New Year edition on January 6 that you will not want to miss. But for now, from all your team here at the Times, a Happy Christmas and an even better New Year. We thank all of you for your support which we never take for granted. Richard Moore, Editorial Director. PS: Check out the Christmas message on Page 4 from our Bishop ... it’s all about the coded message of the nativity.
