DELUXE EDITION

Welcome to the celebration of Highgate Gospel Choir’s journey, contribution and success. The Legacy Project encapsulates their experience in worship, fellowship, creativity and dynamism through a meticulous rerecording of their original 1985 album, ‘How Good Is the Lord’.

This new release honours the heritage of faith, friendship and family and shares its treasure with renewed passion, reverence and joy.

It’s been that ‘once in a lifetime’ labour of love for me, inspired by my childhood memories of my older siblings’ experience as choir members: the music and singing that filled our home; the vibe and pride I felt travelling with them as their little mascot; the gravitas of their presence and ministry on the gospel circuit.

Reflecting on my legacy inevitably highlights theirs, and I saw an opportunity to connect the past with the present to a make a new mark for the future - one embraced as enthusiastically by everyone involved.

the LEGACY PROJECT Don

We have always reminisced, separately and together. Me predictably searching my brother’s vinyl collection for the choir’s record whenever I visited; them predictably breaking into song whenever and wherever they met. You

could say the idea of reimagining their distinctive sound was meant to be.

This venture is multi-layered in significance; everyone has their own take. For me, The Legacy Project is the enactment of what I (and many others) have inherited from my Highgate Gospel Choir predecessors: Godgiven inspiration, talent and desire to give deeply of what’s been received freely. And it is truly a family affair, with heirs and successors collaborating on the record and behind the scenes. To all who took part –Thank you so much.

It’s my pleasure to offer The Legacy Project as a gift today, prayerfully envisioning its blessing for years to come but also simply hoping it resonates right here in the moment.

Either way, please, do sit back (or lean in) and enjoy.

Tony Cummings

A word from The Original Music Producer

I sat in Chris Head’s mobile studio van and I was buzzing. The Highgate Gospel Choir had come to play a concert at Wandsworth City Hall with the reputation as the best gospel outfit in the Midlands, and they were delivering.

Choir director Pamela McIntyre had done a magnificent job in blending the rich sound of 14 sopranos, eight altos, four tenors and three bass singers into a rich wall of sound. Some of the songs I knew, Twinky Clark’s “I Just Want To Please Jesus” and Myrna Summers’ arrangement of “Uncloudy Day”, but others like Gladstone Wilson’s “What Shall We Say” were new to me and those rich voices were bringing passion and luminous faith whether delivering the old hymn “At Calvary” or emoting Pamela’s arrangement of Psalm 96 “Sing To The Lord A New Song”. Gospel choirs may have started in the USA but here was living proof that Midlands musicianaries could make music every bit as soul-affecting as those big budget mega-church Americans.

But of course recording a live album is a risky business. The slightest defect in a lead vocal means abandoning a track. There can be no re-takes on a live album. When I got the multitrack tapes to Chapel Lane Studios for overdubbing and mixing it became clear that two songs had to be dropped. On the plus side though the overdubs went well on both the Merrybell Choir and Highgate Gospel Choir albums recorded on that momentous evening in Wandsworth. In fact, the vastly experienced singer and session musician who’d once recorded with Elton John, Mal Pope, praised both choirs’ magnificent soul power.

Back in Milton Keynes, Word (UK) released the Merrybell Choir album. But we had a problem with the Highgates. Dropping two songs meant that the album was too short. A solution was found. The choir came down to London and in the West 3 Studio engineer David Buckley did a brilliant job in recording the choir and musicians live so that they had the same dynamic values as the Wandsworth-origin recordings. And the song recorded? As soon as I heard “How Good Is The Lord”, written by Glen McKenzie and Gladstone Wilson, it was clear to me that this had to be the title track for the album. It’s lyrics spell out a truth that lead vocalist Clifford Martin together with Pamela McIntyre, Lorna Bailey, Audrey Lawrence, Sandra Jackson, Trevor Minto, Evadre Kerr and all the other members of the Highgate Gospel Choir found back in 1984, and what no doubt the line up of the choir are finding today - that it is an incredibly good God who blesses those who serve him. To quote one of the lines from that song, “I’ll never forget what he’s done for me.”

It’s a huge blessing to me, and I believe will be to the whole church community, that the current lineup of the Highgates have now re-recorded some of these songs. These thrilling new versions demonstrate that the choir’s heritage continues on.

“As soon as I heard “How Good Is The Lord, it was clear to me that this had to be the title track...”

How Your History Impacts Your Legacy

Word from The NTCG National Secretary/Treasurer Bishop Dr Derek Webley OBE

Several gospel choirs appeared in the1980s, but none more profound in its day than Highgate Gospel Choir. Under the patient, calm and insightful leadership of Pamela McIntyre, the choir grew from strength to strength, achieving the level of excellence of other choirs also touring the UK and overseas. They engaged and ministered in a way that drew churched and unchurched people into the same space and consistently made an impact.

Accompanying the choir were skilled musicians who played drums, keyboards, guitars and other instruments. Some of them achieved greatness and excellence matching, and often, surpassing standards set in the secular field.

His contribution to Highgate Gospel Choir and its development was immense.

To be frank, the Church’s music and arts ministries crossed denominational lines to share the gospel and foster unity long before the clergy. I salute Highgate Gospel Choir and the other choirs for their foresight.

Our American counterparts have certainly influenced and inspired UK choirs. Still, Highgate Gospel Choir were a force to be reckoned with. It was professionally led and held notoriously exacting standards. If one did not rehearse, one could not sing, unless there were exceptional circumstances. Good general conduct and local church engagement were prerequisites for choir membership, and both had to be kept. Such requirements contributed to the positive development of the choir and its continued operation and success.

Travelling with the choir, we were able to visit new towns and cities we’d never been to before. This helped us forge strong, time-tested friendships and relationships as we ministered to people

whose lives were transformed by the clear gospel message shared with soul, rhythm and poise. As Highgate Gospel Choir celebrates coming together for this special album, its contribution to the black gospel music scene in the United Kingdom should not be underestimated. Long may they continue to engage, support and underpin an emerging generation that will continue to share the message of hope.

As Highgate Gospel Choir celebrates coming together. This message of hope – victory over sin and transformation through holistic life in Jesus Christ – is still the choir’s anthem.

the Importance Of Legacy

A Word From The Current Presiding Bishop Of Highgate District Pastor Marcel Simpson

Legacy is such a buzzword these days; you hear it at nearly every important meeting you attend. Whether it’s a leaving do for a job someone has worked for two and a half years, a funeral service for anyone of any age, or even for a short career in sports - everybody seems to leave a legacy.

Beyond the buzz of the word, however, we find people. Individuals and groups who leave something behind for those coming after them. Something valuable, something worth remembering and preserving. Enter Highgate Gospel Choir.

Some 40 years ago, when they came together to record an album, none of the members or those who enjoyed those beautiful harmonies could have envisaged all the things life would

have taken them through - the tests, the trials, marriage, children, death, divorce, joy, sadness, ups and downs - bringing them full circle back to the place where it all began.

People don’t often get the chance to do that: go back to ‘Go’, retrace the journey and rejoice they’re still in one piece. But this choir has done so confidently, knowing where they’ve come from, on which Rock they stand and in whom they have believed. Anyone who wants to be sure of where they are going must first know where they are coming from.

Forty years is a long time. It is also biblically significant, representative of divine intervention; repentance and forgiveness; renewal and transformation; testing and preparation, and completion and fulfilment.

Through their lives and music, this choir has proved that ‘he who began a good work’ in them is faithful to complete it (Phil. 1:6). They have shown future generations that God is able to keep anyone and anything that is committed to him from any uprising or upheaval. That this choir can reunite and rerecord after forty years! Look what the Lord has done!

Oh how good is the Lord indeed!

When we talk about Highgate Gospel Choir, we can say they have left something for future generations. People may hum the songs, applaud the music, hear the testimonies or just be encouraged by their example. Here at Highgate, we will declare “Now, that’s what legacy looks like!”.

our Choir Director

As we celebrate the legacy of Highgate Gospel Choir, we honour the incredible foundation laid by our founding choir director, Pamela McIntyre.

Her passion, leadership and dedication undoubtedly shaped who we are, even today. While she wasn’t involved in this project, her influence was readily recalled in the studio and is clear in so many elements.

Highgate Gospel Choir stands as a testament to the seeds she planted, and we are deeply grateful for all she has poured into this ministry. Pamela, we celebrate you and your lasting legacy!

Aaron Hepburn

Pamela is a phenomenal woman, authentically gifted in Music and ministry. She has guided lots of choir directors with her calm and authoritative leadership and detailed but clear instructions, influencing even more indirectly. I have replicated her signals, choir directing and organ playing style in my own practice over the years and will be eternally grateful to her for sharing her gift with us.

Avril Bartholomew

Pamela’s leadership style was supportive, loving and understanding. She motivated you to do well and encouraged you to stand on your beliefs and values.

Beverley Henderson

I’m thankful she took the time to teach us how to sing, and for the way she allowed us to express ourselves whilst encouraging us towards unity.

Clifford Martin

Pamela’s leadership inspired me to develop as a lead singer. Her encouragement gave me the confidence to sing the way I do. God bless you, Pam!

Evadne Anderson

We owe the choir’s evolution to her insight and creativity.

Jacynth Carter

I’m thankful for her support and patience with us while teaching us how to sing individually and together in harmony. Those are lifelong skills I’m still using today.

Janet Dawkins

Pam was talented and humble. Her gift helped us access uncommon platforms and opened countless doors for HGC to minister the Gospel of Jesus Christ far and wide.

PAMELA MCINTYRE

Jean McKinley

My tribute to Lady Pamela McIntyre: Thank you for stepping up to lead us, although those good times may have given you grey hair! I remember and appreciate your unique style that made us sound distinct. You challenged us mentally and vocally, but your leadership and direction helped us learn new songs quickly and confidently – sometimes, on the way to the concerts where we sang! Other choir directors have tried to imitate you, but you are one in a million. Thanks for sharing your gift with us, you’re in our hearts and voices even 40 years later, still a blessing. We love you and may God bless you always.

Jennifer Jackson

I remember the Jackson and Campbell sisters joining voices with Gospel Harmony to form the choir when I was around 16 or 17, I think! Pamela McIntyre’s amazing leadership unified our talents, and instilled professionalism, dedication and pride.

Kathleen Hinds

Pam taught me how to sing from my diaphragm to get the best sound. My voice became distinct and powerful and even now, I don’t lose it as much as I used to.

Martin Hepburn

Pamela was a woman who demanded excellence from us and would help us reach it.

Maureen Wallace

I am who I am because of Pam. Because of her, I sing!

Pamela Hepburn

Pam McIntyre was an amazing person who taught the choir with love and inspiration. Pam always chose songs that she thought would minister to people, rather than just popular songs.

Raymond Webley

I want to express my sincere thanks and appreciation for your dedication and leadership as my choir director throughout your tenure. Your patience, always supportive with clear direction, and your Godgiven musical gifts and talent helped me grow and flourish as a singer.

Rose Hepburn

It was an honour to be involved with HGC from the beginning. We were so excited and being trained by Pam McIntyre, a revered choir director, made it so much more special.

Sandra Jackson

Pamela McIntyre and the late Fritz McIntyre gave the choir their all. This was our opportunity to show up and show out, to honour them.

Sylvia Harper

I remember a quiet taskmaster who taught us how to deliver Christ to people through song. Under Pam’s first-class leadership, we never missed a target. She instilled determination, best effort and practice, which continues to serve me well to this day.

Trevor Minto

She was the epitome of a choir director who knew her singers to a ‘T’!

“Pam is a musical maestro, who effortlessly taught challenging material, and enabled us to minister at an elevated level.”
