TRADITIONAL DWELLING SCALE | THISTLE HILL | SANGUINET + STAATS | FORT WORTH TEXAS HOME TYPOLOGY HAS BEEN A CONTINAL DISCUSSION IN THE HISTORY OF CZECHOSLOVAKIA AND AROUND THE WORLD WHERE THE INDIVIDUAL HOME IS A SINGULAR PORTION OF THE LARGER URBAN FABRIC AND IS A REFUGE FOR INDIVIDUALS ENCOMPASSING THE POTENTIAL FOR ADAPTABLE SUSTAINABILITY OVER TIME.
‘VYSNĚNÝ DOMOV’ EXPLORES THE CONCEPT OF A CZECH VERNACULAR ‘DREAM’ HOME WITH REFERENCES TO CULTURAL DESIGN, MATERIAL USE, AND THE REGIONAL ENVIRONMENT. SPECIFICALLY EVALUATES WATER USUABILITY AND MECHANISMS FOR COMPLETE RECYCABLE COLLECTION ALONG WITH NATURAL LIGHTING, VENTILATION, AND GARDENING. CONSIDERS THE TRADITIONAL SCALE FOR PRESERVED TRADITIONAL HOMES. WHILE FEATURING MODERN AND SPEICAL ELEMENTS FOR SINGULAR DWELLING COMFORTABILITY.

WHILE EXPLORING THE AGRICULTURAL HOUSING STOCK WITHIN THE ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY OF CZECHOSLOVAKIA AND IMPLEMENTING A MODERN NATURAL AND OPEN SPACE FLOOR CONCEPT AN EXPLORATION OF THE ATRIUM TYPOLOGY, TRADITIONAL FRAMING STRUCTURES, INTERNATIONAL BUILDING CODES, AND OPTIMIZED CIRCULATION BECAME A PRIORITIZED PART OF THE DESIGN.
THUS CREATING VIGNETTES WITHIN THE HOME FOR ELEMENTS SUCH AS A SPIRAL STAIR CASE, DOUBLE SIDED FIRE PLACE SERVING THE PUBLIC LIVING AREA AND PRIVATE FIRST FLOOR MASTER SUITE, A CENTRALIZED SUNKEN DEN, AND KITCHEN ISLAND SERVING AS A THRESHOLD BETWEEN THE SERVICE ZONES OF THE KITCHEN UTILITES AND PUBLIC LIVING AREA.
INTERNATIONAL CODE REQUIREMENTS STRUCTURE, MATERIALS, AND DIMENSIONS WERE CONSIDERED AND APPLIED TO THE SCALE OF THE PROJECT. THIS INCLUDES THE ROOF, CHIMNEY, FOUNDATION, AND COLUMNS.

THE COLUMNAR STRUCTURE IS A TRADITIONAL ELEMENT OF ARCHITECTURE REQUIRING CONSTRAINT GRID AND MODULAR SCALE STRUCTURE. WITHIN LARGER BUILDINGS IT LIMITS THE FREE PLAN OF AN OCCUPANCY BUT NOT AS MUCH IN SMALL SCALE RESIDENTIAL PROJECTS.
A FIELD STUDY WAS TAKEN OF THE THISTLE HILL IN FORT WORTH TEXAS WHERE THE PRESERVED MANSION APPEARS VOLUMOUS WITH ORGANIZED HABITABLE SPACES. ADDITIONALLY IT FEATURES AN ELEGANT STAIR CASE, VARIOUS THRESHOLDS FOR PUBLIC AND PRIVATE QUARTERS, OPEN FOYER, AND ORNAMENTATION.
UTILIZING SOME OF THE SCALABLE FEATURES IN REFERENCE TO CZECH VERNACULAR ASSISTED IN APPLYING THE DESIGN ELEMENTS TO THE RESIDENTIAL PROJECT INCLUDING NATURAL LIGHTING AND ZONING FOR UTILITY ELEMENTS REQUIRED FOR BASIC HVAC, ELECTRICAL, AND INTEGRATION OF THE DENDRIFORM COLUMNS AND WATER HARVESTING.

APPLYING THE WATER HARVESTING FIELD RESEARCH FROM EL PRADO NEW MEXICO’S EARTSHIP HOMES AND THE INTERNATIONAL BUILDING CODE REQUIREMENTS TO THE DESIGN FEATURED ELMENTS OF VYSNĚNÝ DOMOV PROJECT LED TO A BETTER UNDERSTANDING OF WATER LOADS, FILTRATION, MATERIAL THICKNESSES, AND CALCULATIONS WHICH WERE THEN APPLIED TO THE PODIUM POOL, MASTER SUITE CLOSET AQUARIUM WALLS, PLUMBING UTILITIES, AND ROOF AND WALL GARDEN TRELLIS TO DEVELOP A FULL CYCLE WATER COLLECTION AT THE ROOF FROM RAIN AND SNOW, RESERVED AT A TANK, RECYCLED TO FILL OR STORE MORE WATER WITHIN THE RESEVOIR, POOL, AND AQUARIUM, THEN RECOLLECTED FOR GREY WATER RECYCLING AFTER USE FOR PLANTS ON THE BUILDING WESTERN AND NORTHERN SIDES.

THROUGH CREATING THE STUDY MODEL MINUTE DESIGN DECISION WERE ALTERED THROUGH OUT THE PROCESS OF THREE DIMENISONAL INVESTIGATION INCLUDING OPENINGS, CIRCULATION, FLOOR THICKNESSES, SECOND FLOOR ROOM ORIENTATION AT THE SOUTHERN SIDE, AND FACADES.

SEATING AREA | SUNKEN GARDEN | BUTCHART | CANADA INFILL OPTIMIZATION CAN BE IMPLEMENTED FOR VARIOUS PURPOSES WITH MINIMAL SPATIAL CONSTRAINTS WITHIN LARGE DEVELOPED URBAN FABRICS.

FOR THIS PARTICULAR PROJECT A MODERATE 60’ BY 130’ LOT IS DESGINATED FOR THE USE OF AN ORPHANAGE IN DALLAS TEXAS REQUESTING SPECIFIC PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS INCLUDING PUBLIC LECTURE HALL + CHILDREN HOUSING + CLASSROOMS + ADMINISTRATIVE OFFICES + LIBRARY.
IN ADDITION TO MEETING THE REQUIREMENTS OF THE PROGRAM A THEMEATIC CONCEPT OF THE ENGLISH GARDEN WAS INCORPORATED TO PROVIDE A HOSPITABLE ELEMENT TO THE DESIGN.
WITH ALLUSIONS TO GROUP COMPARTMENTALIZED OCCUPANCY ARRANGEMENT, UNCONVENTIONAL GEOMETRY TO ORGANIZE THE FLOW OF CIRCULATION, DELIBERATE ORGANIZATION OF SPACE TO CREATE PRIVACY FOR SPECIFIC PARTS OF THE PROGRAM, AND TO CREATE AN OPEN FIELD OF SPACE FOR PUBLIC PORTIONS.

WITH REFERENCES TO A TALL EVERGREEN WHICH OCCUPIES A LIMITED SPACE WITH ABUNDANT FOLIAGE, THE CONCEPT FOR THE INFILL SPACE IS TO OPTIMIZE THE SPATIAL ASPECTS OF THE FACILITY WITH LIMITED SMALL CLOSED SPACES, ALLOWING AN ABUNDANCE FOR USER ACTIVITY BETWEEN THE INTERCONNECTED POINTS VOLUMETRICALLY, SECTIONALLY, AND ALONG THE FLOOR PLAN.
IN PLAN THE IDEAL OF AN ENGLISH GARDEN FORMING A PARTICULAR CIRCULATION DIRECTS OCCUPANCY USE INTO DESIGNATED SPACES VIA A NATURAL FLOW TOWARDS OVERLY PUBLIC SPACES, WHERE AS THE PRIVATE AREAS OF THE PLAN INCLUDING CHILDRENS SLEEPING QUARTERS, ADMINISTRATIVE FACILITIES, AND SERVICE ZONES ARE SECTIONED OFF OR HIDDEN FROM THE NATURAL PUBLIC CIRCULATION IN PLAN BY LARGE WALLS, THRESHOLDS THROUGH THEIR PLACEMENT AND PROXIMITY TO THE ENVELOPE AND LOAD BEARING STRUCTURE OF THE BUILDING.
THE FACADES IMMEDIATELY REVEAL THE FUNCTION AND VOLUME OF THE SPACE THEY SHARE, INCLUDING THE ENTRANCE WHICH OF ALL ARE SCALED IN RELEVANCE TO THE NEIGHBORING BUILDING. WHERE THE ENTRANCE TO THE BUILDING READS TRANSLUCENT VOID OPENING INTO A SHARED MULTI VOLUME SPACE NEAR THE RECEPTION AND CIRCULATION THROUGHOUT THE BUILDING.

TO RESPECTFULLY PROPOSE NEW CONSTRUCTION IN A RICH HISTORICAL DISTRICT SUCH AS THE MEXICO CITY, A PROPER ANALYSIS OF THE CITY HISTORY, BUILDING STOCK, PRESENT DAY LANDSCAPE, AND DYMANISM WAS CONSIDERED AS WELL AS AN UNDERSTANDING OF THE PROPOSED BUILDING PROGRAM, AND SOCIETAL DYNAMICS.

THIS CULTURAL CULINARY ARTS INSTITUION EXAMINED THE PROPER DISTRICT OF MEXICO CITY, COMPELLING REASONS FOR ITS SITE SELECTION, AND ANALYSIS OF THE BUILDING MASS RELATIVE TO THE SELECTED SITE, AND OPTIMIZATION OF THE PROGRAM AND INSTITUION IN REGARDS TO ITS RELATION WITH THE SURROUNDING URBAN FABRIC.

FOOD MARKET LOCATIONS THE ACADEMY SITE WAS CHOSEN BASED ON AN ANALYSIS OF MARKET AND POPULAR CHEF LOCATIONS. WHILE THE PROGRAMS REQUIREMENTS MADE INFILL OPPORTUNITY AND URBAN DENSITY A GREATER FACTOR, PUBLIC SPACES AND EASE OF TRANSPORTATION ACCESS WERE ESSENTIAL AS WELL. IT WAS IMPORTANT TO FACILITATE THE URBAN CULTURAL TENDENCIES TO FIT THE CITY’S HISTORICAL CONTEXT.

A SET OF SECONDARY SITE ANALYSIS ESTABLISHED A FORM WHICH RESPECTS PEDESTRIAN THE MOVEMENT OF CIVILIANS AND APPROACH TO THE FACADE. AS AN INFILL PIECE, THE ACADEMY HAD TO COMPETE WITH A TELECOMMUNICATIONS BUILDING BEHIND IT, NEIGHBORING INFORMAL STRUCTURES, AND AN INSTITUTIONAL BUILDING AND TRADITIONAL PLAZA.
THE GEOMETRY, LANDSCAPE, AND SURROUNDING STRUCTURES WERE TAKEN UNDER INVESTIGATION.
IN SECTION, THE FIGURE AND VOLUME OF THE ACADEMY WERE DETERMINED BY ELEVATIONAL HEIGHT DIFFERENCES AND THE PERSPECTIVES OF AN INDIVIDUAL PEDESTRIAN.
FROM THE ELEVATION CAME THE VOLUME AND A DEFINITE STRUCTURE.

OPTION_2_SKELETAL FACADE PROGRAM ANALYSIS

THE REQUIRED PROGRAM, SELECTED DIMENSIONS, AND MASSING BASED ON THE SELECTED SITE ANALYSIS RESULTED IN A DESIGNATED PUBLIC FACADE FACING THE SOUTH END OF THE SAN JUAN PLAZA IN FRONT OF THE TELECOMMUNICATIONS BUILDING, AND A SEPERATE BUILDING FACE ACROSS FROM THE SAN JUAN MARKET. THE ELEVATION FACING THE SAN JUAN MARKET ALLOWED INTERACTION ON THE GROUND FLOOR BETWEEN A STREET CAFE AND STORE IN THE ACADEMY WITH THE PUBLIC, WHERE AS THE DESIGNATED FACADE FACED THE PLAZA IN CONJUCTION WITH AN EXISTING TRADITIONAL INSTITUTIONAL BUILDING..
