THE FORMAL ELEVATION WHICH FACES THE PLAZA BECOMES A TRANSIENT FACE. WHILE THE SECOND FACADE, CONTINUING TO FACE THE SAN JUAN MARKET, BECOMES A PLAYFUL SHIELD. IT IS TEXTURALLY DIVERSE AND FLAVORFUL. THIS FACADE BECOMES LIFTED TO ALLOW A FLOW OF TRAFFIC INTO A SEMI-PUBLIC SPACE HELD IN FRONT OF THE EXISTING TELECOMMUNICATIONS BUILDING.

ON THE LOWER LEVEL STORES, RESTAURANTS, AND SEMI-PUBLIC PLAZA ARE HELD. ABOVE, THE FLOORS BECOME THE LEARNING AND EXPERIMENTAL ZONES OF THE ACADEMY. A TANGENTIAL LECTURE HALL VOLUME HANGS OFF THE CORE OF THE ACADEMY. THE CARVED VOLUME THEN CREATES A TRANSITIONAL ZONE BEFORE THE TELECOMMUNICATIONS BUILDING.

ECOSHIPS | ARCHITECT FRANCISCO TAVIRA | ATOMKA | SAN ANTONIO, TX, USA | OBSERVER + VOLUNTEER | 2016

IN 2016 THROUGH THE SAN ANTONIO AMERICAN INSTITUE OF ARCHITECTS, BACK IN MY HOME TOWN, I WAS FORTUNATE TO COME ACROSS ARCHITECT FRANCISCO TAVIRA WHOM AT THE TIME WAS CONSTRUCTING A CONTAINER HOME. DURING THIS TIME SMALL HOMES WERE BECOMING POPULAR AS WELL AS THE REPURPOSING OF SHIPPING CONTAINERS. HIS WILL AND DEDICATION OVER THE COURSE OF TIME BEFORE, WHEN, AND SINCE MEETING HIM IS ALL INSPIRING. HE PARTICIPATED IN SUSTAINABLE AWARENESS EFFORTS INCLUDING EXPOSITIONS, HE PUBLISHES ROUTINELY ON ALTERNATIVE DESIGNS, MECHANICAL SYSTEMS FOR THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE PROJECTS, AND WORKS WITH THE NEIGHBORHOOD, FELLOW CONTRACTORS, AND INQUISTIVE MINDS AS MYSELF TO COMPLETE AND ATTRACT OTHERS INVOLVEMENT OF THE ATOMKA ECOSHIPS PROJECT. I WAS GREATFUL TO HAVE HAD THE OPPORTUNITY TO HELP SHARE INFORMATION ALONG SIDE HIM IN AN EXPOSITION, AND HELP HIM DOCUMENT A TOUR DURING THE SUMMER OF 2016. NOT ONLY WAS IT AN HONOR TO HELP AN INSPIRING HARDWORKING INDIVIDUAL, BUT IT WAS AN ABUNDANT SOURCE OF INFORMATION AND EXPERIENCE WITH ALTERNATIVE BUILDING METHODS AND INNOVATIVE MODES FOR ECO FRIENDLY MINIMALIST HOUSING.

ROSS AVE AT CADDO INTERSECTION ELEVATION WITHIN MY FIRST INTERNSHIP AS A DRAFTER FOR CONSTRUCTION CONCEPTS INC IN BISHOP ARTS DALLAS TEXAS. MY BOSS ELIAS RODRIGUEZ BEGAN A PROJECT FOR TWO AFRICAN DOCTORS WHOM OF WHICH WANTED TO COMBINE THEIR PRACTICES UNDER ONE ROOF.

A DOCTORS OFFICE AND PHARMACUTICAL LAB. THE PROJECT REQUIRED MONTHS OF SCHEMATIC DESIGN LAYOUTS, STUDY OF OCCUPANY TYPE REQUIREMENTS, ADA REGULATIONS, AND UNDERSTANDING OF PROGRAMATIC ESSENTIALS OF PETIENT ROOMS AND LABS. ALL OF WHICH NEEDED TO NOT ONLY SATISFY THE CITY PERMIT REQUIREMENTS BUT THE CLIENTS AS WELL.

WHILE THIS PROJECT REQUIRED MORE THAN WHAT I WAS USE TO AT THE POINT IN TIME AS FAR AS MANAGING THE CONTINUOUS PROGRESS FOR THE DESIGN LAYOUT, COMMUNICATING WITH THE CLIENTS, DOCUMENTING THE PHASES, AND COLLABORATING WITH THE TEAM AND ASSOCIATED PARTNERS, IT WAS ONE OF MY FAVORITE PROJECTS BECAUSE OF THE CLIENTS PERSONALITIES, AND THE AMOUNT OF OPTIONS AVAILABLE FOR THE PROJECTS PLAN, ELEVATION, MATERIALS, ETC. IT FULLY REALISED ALL OF THE ACADEMIC AND ASPIRATIONAL EXPERIENCES I HAD.

NOUVEAU STORE FRONT | ARCHITECTURAL STYLE SELECTION

GRAFFITI LOGO | COLOR PALETTE SOURCE ORIGINALLY CREATED FOR A CONSTRUCTION DOCUMENT COURSE AT THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS ARLINGTON UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM, THIS RETAIL PROJECT WAS BASED UPON THE AFFINTY WITH CANDY AND DELECTIBLE EDIBLES.

CONSIDERING THE CONCEPT OF CANDY AS A MIXTURE OF INGREDIENTS THEN COOKED AS AN ANALAGOUS TO IRON WORK AND ART NOUVEAU FORMS OF ARCHITECTURE, THE IDEA WAS TO COMBINE THE FREE FORM WITH THE MODULAR TO REPRESENT THE PRODUCT BEING SOLD AND THE FLEXIBILITY OF THE BOX STORE FORM TO BE A PART OF A STRIP MALL, INDOOR MALL, OR STAND ALONE SITE IN THIS CASE.

THE PROJECT REFLECTS A CONTINUITY OF BRAND THROUGHOUT THE CONSTRUCTION, DESIGN, AND DETAIL OF DOCUMENTS SUCH AS CASE WORK, CANISTERS, BENCH, SIGNAGE DETAILS. AS WELL AS AN APPLICABLE NDERSTANDING OF FULL MEP, PARKING, SITE ANALYSIS, AND ADA REQUIRED FOR SCHEMATIC PERMITTING PROPOSAL.

THE FOLLOWING IS A SPATIAL CONEPTUAL DESIGN BASED UPON FEREMENATION OF YEAST CELLS IN THEIR REGENERATION PHASE.

EACH DIAGRAM INVESTIGATES THIS REGENERATIVE CELLUAR PHENOMENA IN RELATION TO A SITE IN MISSION HILL, WHERE ACTIVATION ON THE STREET LEVEL DETERMINES BUILDING FOOT PRINT, GEOMETRIC ORIENTATION VERTICALLY, AS WELL AS OPPORTUNITIES TO VIEW HISTORICALLY IMPORTANT SITES NEARBY.

THE PROPOSAL INHERENTLY CONSIDERS SUN ORIENTATION AND CIRUCALTION IN REGARDS TO USER ACTIVITY, AND PROMOTES VARIOUS OPPORTUNITIES FOR RESONABLE SPACE IN A PANDEMIC WORLD.

CONCEPTUALLY THE MECHANISM OF REGENERATIVE CELLULAR SPACE WAS UTILIZED TO DEFINE THE VARIOUS SPACES WITHIN WHICH INCLUDE AMPLE PERMEABILITY IN TERMS OF VIWES, CIRCULATION , NATURAL LIGHTING, AND VENTILATION.

PARIS SKY POOL COMPETITION | WORLD ARCHITECTURE | PARTNER ENTRY | 2015

THE PARIS SKY POOL SUBMISSION THROUGH THE UNIVERSITY OF TEXAS AT ARLINGTON FALL 2015 STUDIO PROPOSED AND ANALYSIS THE ELEMENTS OF POOL AND SKYSCRAPERS FOR THE PARIS BUSINESS DISTRICT CONTEXT. IN THIS SUBMISSION AN COMBINATION OF PUBLIC FOUNTAIN, MOTION IN WATER, AND TOWER WERE THE BASES FOR CONCEPTUALIZATION.

THE FOLLOWING IS A PROCESS DEVELOPMENT WHERE EACH DIAGRAM INVESTIGATES HOW TO CONVEY A CONTEXTUALLY RESPONSIVE “SKYPOOL” ON A MICRO TO MACRO LEVEL. WHERE THE ELEMENT OF WATER ITSELF IS THE MICROCOSM FOR THE MACRO ANALGOUS OF A WATER FOUNTAIN WHICH PROJECTS FROM THE GROUND SIMILAR TO A SKYSCRAPER.

CONCEPTUALLY THE MECHANISM OF PERPETUAL WATER MOTION WAS UTILIZED TO DEFINE THE TOWERS ABSTRACTED FORM AND THEN WAS CORRELATED WITH THE VARIOUS PORTIONS OF A BUILDINGS STRUCTURE WITH ROOMS AS BUBBLES WITHIN WATER, GLAZED ENVELOPE AS THE TRANSPEARENT ASPECT OF WATER, FRAMING AND THE DIRECTIONALITY, AND CORE AS THE MECHANISM FROM WHICH BOTH A TOWER AND WATER PUMP IN A FOUNTAIN FACILITATES CIRCULATION.

THROUGHOUT THE ADAPTATION OF THE FORM THE LATTER WAS HALVED, INVERTED, AND COMBINED TO FORM THE SLEEK CAPSULE LIKE SUBMITTED PRODUCT. TEMPORARY PUBLIC URBAN STRUCTURE | 2015

AS A PROPOSAL FOR A NON CONVENTIONAL URBBAN PAVILLION LOCATED IN BARCELONA PORT VELL, PIEZO ELECTRICITY EFFECTS AND TRANSFORMATIVE ADAPTIVE ARCHITECTURE WERE ANALYIZED IN COMBINATION TO CREATE AND PAVILLION ELECTRICALLY CHARGED BY THE KINENTIC MOTION AND STRESS OF PEDESTRIAN TRAFFIC TO LIGHT AND SERVE THE PUBLIC ACTIVITY NEAR THE COAST.

THIS KINETIC ACTIVITY WOULD BE UTILIZED TO CHARGE AND STORE ENERGY TO LIGHT VARIOUS PARTS OF A PAVILIION WHICH COULD BE DEFRAGMENTED AND SPREAD OUT FOR USE THROUGH OUT THE PUBLIC PLAZA. THESE PARTS CONSIST OF SEATING, STORAGE, VENDER BOOTHS, AND BOOTHS HOUSING SPACES FOR UTILIZATION, ENTERNTAINMENT, AND BACK DROPS.

UTILIZING THE TO THE STORED ELECTRIC POTENTIAL THE PAVILLION WOULD HOUSE LIGHTING FIXTURES SENSIBLE TO MOTION AND TIME OF DAY, LIGHTING UP AS A DISPLAY IN RESPONSE TO MOTION AROUND IT, SERVING AS A PERFORMATIVE LIGHT DISPLAY IN THE PLAZA NEAR THE COAST AT NIGHT.

LA JOLLA WILDFIRES

CATALYTIC MAPPING| RESEARCH + APPLIED ANALYSIS + GRAPHIC COMMUNICATION | 2014

THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA EXPERIENCES ON AVERAGE MORE THAN 100,000 WILDFIRES WHICH CONSUMES 4 TO 5 MILLION ACRES OF LAND A YEAR. WILDFIRES NEED THREE SOURCES, FUEL, OXYGEN, AND A HEAT SOURCE, TO BURN. FUEL IS ANYTHING THAT IS FLAMMABLE, AND 4 OUT OF 5 TIMES THE HEAT SOURCES ARE CREATED BY PEOPLE, WHETHER IT BE ARSON, ACCIDENTS, OR INDIRECT ACTION SUCH AS SPARKS FLYING FROM MACHINERY CATCHING NEARBY BRUSH ON FIRE. TRADITIONALLY, WILDFIRE SEASON LASTS BETWEEN LATE SUMMER AND EARLY FALL, BUT RECENTLY IT HAS STARTED IN MAY AND PERSIST UNTIL OCTOBER, EVEN NOVEMBER. THE SANTA ANA WINDS CONTRIBUTE TO THE SEVERE SPREAD OF WILD FIRES IN THE LATE SUMMER MONTHS WITH 80 MILE PER HOUR WINDS ON AVERAGE.

NATURALLY WILD FIRES ARE CAUSED BY COMBUSTIBLE DEAD ORGANIC MANNER, HIGH HEAT, EXTREME WINDS, SPARKS FROM FALLING ROCKS, AND MOST OFTEN LIGHTNING. AS WILDFIRES AND SANTA ANA WINDS ARE BOTH NATURAL PHENOMENAS, THESE PROCESSES CONSIDERATELY FERTILIZE THE SOIL WITH OLD VEGETATION. ECOSYSTEMS DEPEND ON THE FIRE OPENING SEEDS AND RETURN NUTRIENTS TO THE SOIL SO MUCH THAT PLANTS AND ANIMALS HAVE ADAPTED TO WILDFIRES, SOME EVEN DEPENDENT, THRIVE THROUGH THE REPRODUCTION OF FIRE. THAT NATURAL PROCESS IS NOW RATIFIED BY CLIMATE CHANGE. WITH LESS VARIABILITY YEAR TO YEAR, HIGHER SEA LEVELS, AND LONG TERM PRECIPITATION PATTERNS, VEGETATION GROWS RIGHT AS THE HEAT INTENSITY GOES UP, THEN THE NEW VEGETATION IS IGNITED, CREATING MORE FUELS, WITH LESS INTERVENTION BY SEASONAL CHANGE. IN SAN DIEGO THE TEMPERATURE STAYS MODERATELY STATIC THROUGHOUT THE YEAR.

WITHIN 20 YEARS THE STATE OF CALIFORNIA HAS EXPERIENCED FOUR TIMES THE AMOUNTS OF FIRES IT HAS IN THE PAST. SAN DIEGO ON ITS OWN IS EXPERIENCING A MORE FREQUENT, LONG LASTING, EARLIER STARTING WILDFIRE SEASON. IN MAY THERE WERE 19 WILDFIRES, WITH 8 FIRES BURNING SIMULTANEOUSLY. MOST OF THESE FIRES OCCURRED ON THE OUTLYING SKIRTS OF THE CITY, MOST TIMES SOUTH OF LOS ANGELES AND DIRECTLY ABOVE TIJUANA AND WEST TOWARDS THE VAST NATIONAL PARKS, RESERVED LANDS, DESERTS, AND ARID MESAS. MUCH MORE STRANGELY 95% OF FIRES IN SAN DIEGO COUNTY ARE CAUSED BY HUMANS, 15% MORE THAN THE NATIONAL AVERAGE. STUDIES HAVE FOUND THAT FIRE SUPPRESSION ISN’T A CAUSATION OF THE WILDFIRE INTENSITY, RATHER THE FACT THAT IT SHOULD BE USED WISELY, BEST USED DURING THE IGNITION TIME PERIOD OF FIRES AND WHEN THERE ARE LOW HEAT, SLOW BURNING FIRES, AND HIGH HUMIDITY. LARGER FIRES USUALLY BURN IN LOW HUMIDITY AT HIGHER TEMPERATURES, RIGHT BEFORE AND DURING DROUGHT SEASON, AND CAN EVEN CREATE THEIR OWN WINDS UP TO 120 MPH.

SAN DIEGO HAS IN THIS CASE MUST UNDERSTAND HOW TO POSTPONE FIRES, CREATE A MORE CONTROLLABLE SITUATION. EVEN THOUGH HUMAN FACTORS ARE SOMEWHAT UNPREDICTABLE SUCH AS ARSON, OTHERS CAN BE PREVENTED. CURRENTLY IN SAN DIEGO, BURN BANS, CONTROLLED BURNINGS, FINES FOR ARSON, AND OTHER CAUTIONS ARE IN PLACE TO PREVENT FIRES. SCIENTIST KEELY SUGGEST INSTEAD OF STOPPING THE INEVITABLE FROM OCCURRING, WHY NOT START SMALL BURNS DURING THE NATURAL WILD FIRE TIME, OF REMOVING FLAMMABLE VEGETATION, REPLANTING NEW VEGETATION, LIMITING NEW URBAN WILDLAND INTERFACE, AND HELP MOTHER NATURE COMPLETE ITS RITUAL, RATHER THAN SUPPRESSING THE ENVIRONMENT. WITH MUCH CERTAINTY, AS THE POPULATION GROWS, SO DO THE CHANCES OF HUMAN CAUSED FIRES.

I SPECIFICALLY, I CHOSE TO ANALYZE LA JOLLA, UNIVERSITY CITY AREA OF SAN DIEGO, BECAUSE IT IS THE SITE OF NEW URBAN DEVELOPMENT, CONTROLLED BURNS ON THE MCAS MIRARMAR AND CITY LANDFILL SITE, RESERVED FORESTS, PARKLAND, UTC ARSON, AND SAN DIEGO COUNTY’S CEDAR FIRE OF 2003 WHICH BURNED 280,000 ACRES OF LAND ONE OF THE LARGEST FIRES IN SAN DIEGO CAUSED BY A HUNTER SIGNALING FOR RESCUE. THE THREE BROADER MAPS DEPICT SAN DIEGO COUNTY AS A WHOLE, WHERE THE URBAN AND COASTAL REGION ARE LESS SUSCEPTIBLE TO WILDFIRES. IT CAN BE INFERRED, FROM THE SHORT DEPICTIONS, THE THREAT URBAN WILDLAND DEVELOPMENT CAN BE TO THE ECOLOGY OF CALIFORNIA. AS CITIES EXPAND INTO SUBURBAN AND SPARSELY POPULATED AREAS, HUMANS MAY CAUSE MORE FIRES IN TERRITORY WITH STRUCTURES TO CREATE MORE FUELS AND FIRES WITH HIGHER INTENSITIES AND LONGER DURATIONS. FIRE PREVENTION MUST BE TAKEN WITH MORE SERIOUSNESS, AS WE BEGIN TO INVADE AND CONTROL NATURE ITSELF.
